This is from ‘Beasts of Burden’, a really cool comic about a bunch of dogs (and one cat) protecting their town from the supernatural things that threaten it. It’s spooky and sad and really just fantastic. At one point they teamed up with Hellboy. Everyone should read it (if you don’t mind some pretty dark things happening. it is not a cheerful comic but it is a good one).

Hey! So, I loved this comic, and still think about it occasionally, and tonight it was linked to me again with just the right timing so that I hyperfocused and squirreled off to go read everything! They aren’t really numbered well, but the Wikipedia page has a list of them in release order and what anthologies to find them in!

But given that it’s a pain to seek out each one one by one, I’ve got a list of links in order a smidge further down! Please try to support Dark Horse Comics if you can, but if you’re broke like me and still want to read, the Internet is a beautiful place. According to the wiki page, there are at least two more installments to come, scheduled for May 1st and June 5th, but there’s no real update schedule for the series as a whole.

Do note: they are graphic, gory, and sad, with a lot of body horror. But they’re really fantastic.

The trade collection for “Wise Dogs and Eldritch Men” came out a couple of weeks ago, btw.

S’more nodded. “He owns an ice-cream parlor around here,” She said, not adding the fact she worked there. She seemed a mix of worried and intrigued, not exactly knowing her relation to Root-Beer Float. “Would you like me to show you where?”

Pina Colada seemed a bit choked up at the cookies words. He was closer that she thought. She could actually find him after years of searching.

"C-could you really..?" She asked the stranger with a smile. There were evident tears in her eyes, threatening to fall. "Oh, please do."

S’more didn’t hesitate to nod. Okay, maybe she did for a moment, but more out of a bit of shock than anything. She wasn’t used to cookies acting like this, but than again, she never lost a friend for a long period of time just to find them again. 

“Of course,” She said with a polite smile. She really did want to help, even if she wasn’t sure how to deal with the whole ‘crying thing’. “Just follow me, and I’ll show you where it’s at.”

"Thank you so much." Pina adjusted her satchel before picking her umbrella back up. She held a brave face, for a moment. But then it sort of dawned on her. What if he didn't want to see her. What if.... He'd forgotten about her.

"W-wait." Pina Colada stuttered, pausing her steps. Gods, why was this so hard!? "I-I'm actually not to sure. What if he doesn't want to see me any more?"

S’more honestly hadn't thought about that, and didn’t really know how to comfort her. How could she. She didn’t even know Root-Beer Float cookie knew Pina, and she had no idea what their relationship was before anyways. “I’m sure he will,” She decided to say, unsure herself. “He’ll probably be excited to see you, since he hasn’t in a while. I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about.”

S'more was snuggled up in her covers, resting against a mountain of pillows with an old and worn-out teddy by her side. Her actual pet bear, a sweet animal cracker with a coating of pink icing, rested half-way on the foot of her bed, half of his body still on the ground since he couldn’t fit all of himself up there. He was resting soundly as S'more scrolled through her phone, occasionally reaching up to scratch  under her hair-wrap, which prevented melted marshmallow from getting on her stuff as she slept. It was a quiet night, the other members of her household either asleep or quietly doing stuff in their own rooms to gives the ones that were actually sleeping some peace and quiet. She scrolled, looking at picture after picture. She was following some music based accounts, so she wasn’t surprised to come across a video of someone playing a guitar. What she was surprised about was the cookie who was doing the playing. Her guitar skills were lovely, and she found herself quite impressed by the music that played quietly out of her phone’s speakers. She hesitated a moment before clicking onto the account before scrolling through to see all the pictures and short videos she had, S’more obviously recognized her boss, who was in a few of his sister’s pictures, and was even ‘jamming out’ in one of the videos, but there were many other cookies she didn’t recognize. Besides Peach Float, of course. She smiled to herself as she found a picture of the cookie happily viewing a wonderful sunset. S’more scrolled back up, and spent longer than a few seconds hesitating and debating with herself before sending a friend request, more than a little nervous.

Peach Float let out a small laugh, giving Rainbow Sherbet his hello. He lets out another happy chirp.

“Holding on.” She sent in response to S'more’s text. She lets pout a quiet “awe!” at the pet, he was so cute!! Peach replied rather quickly, smiling. “He’s adorable!!”

“And same tho XD.” Peach then sent. She was never in bed when she needed to be. Nor was she ever up when she needed to be. Oh well.

Now she wanted to get a pic of Pit and show it to S'more, but he’d panic if she were to turn on the flash for it. The poor thing… “I’d show ya sleeby lil Pit, but he’s so jumpy lol.”

“Yeh. He’d be terrified,” Peach agreed before taking a bite of the cold left-over pizza she deemed worthy enough to eat at this hour. “Poor baby. </3” The broken heart was sent jokingly, even though she did feel bad for Pit. Poor thing was afraid of his own shadow.

After finishing up about half the slice, S’more sent, “I’m sure he looks adorable, though. It’s hard for a puppers not to be cute. lol.” She added, last minute after a few moments of debate, a dog and a heat eyes emoji along with that text. She didn’t really use emojis often, but she occasionally found use for them. “Even if they are scared of everything.”

She yawned, stretching out a little bit on the love seat for a few moments before getting comfortable again, nestling into the cushions that were mostly comfortable. She scratched under her hair wrap once again, and went to town on the rest of the slice, glad she had decided to not actually get a healthy 8 hours of sleep like a normal cookie.

Peach let out a quiet giggle. It was true. Pit was scared of just about anything, even dust. “True, true XD”

She then stood from her spot at the kitchen table, careful not to make the chair scrape loudly against the hardwood floor. She didn’t want to alert Coconut Creme. Then Root-Beer would be awake and nagging at Peach Float to go to bed. She made her way to the kitchen, a cup of hot cocoa calling her name.

“So, watcha up to now?” She sent before she reached for the cocoa mix in one of the top cabinets. Peach was honestly not the best at small talk over the phone but still wanted to talk with S'more. It was nice to, well, have a friend. Besides her brother, that is.

She went for a decently sized mug as she awaited S'more’s reply, filling it with water and putting out into the microwave.

“Nuthin much. There's not much to do when almost everyone else here is asleep,” S’more sent. Almost was a key word here. SHe was able to hear the faint sound of music coming through the shared wall between her and her brother’s room. “I did find something to eat, though.” S’more positioned her phone to take a pic of the box that she had rested on her legs, since she didn’t have a table or anything to put it on. 

Her legs were obviously showing, since she was wearing her usual gray pajama shorts with her light red tank top. but she wasn’t too mindful of it. The other cookie had seen her wear shorts on the hot summer days when it would of been dumb not to, so she wasn’t as wary about showing them off like she would of been if she sent it to a different newly-added online friend.

She captioned the pic sarcastically, “Cold leftover pizza: The food of kings,” before sending Peach Float it.

Peach Float laid in her bed, snuggled up with Pit, who was fast asleep. She was on her phone, having received a friend request from someone. She tapped on the notification, smiling when she recognized the cookie.

Although she didn’t know S'more all that well, Peach hoped to become more acquainted with her. Seeing as they were coworkers and all. She accepted the friend request happily, and started contemplating on whether or not she should then say something.

Peach Float went with the latter.

“Heya!” She finally sent. After roughly five minutes of deleting and rewriting multiple things she could’ve sent instead. Why was that so hard?

S’more had gone from staring at her phone to blankly staring at the ceiling, going through he five stages of grief, or well, regret in this case as the collar of her shirt now found itself being chewed on, the fabric getting damp as her phone rested on her chest. Should she have sent the friend request? It wasn’t a bad thing, but was it weird? She was his boss’ sister, after all, and it would just be awkward if the other cookie ignored it. Maybe she wasn’t even on right now, yeah, maybe she had time to retract the friend request. That’s all she would have to-

Her phone lit up, and she took a few moments to compose herself, even though no one was there to see her, besides her lovely Sprinkles(Name in the works), who was still sleeping soundly. She took a deep breath before looking at the notification. ‘Heya.’ Yeah, yeah, she defiantly wasn’t freaking out right now. Yup, not at all. Sure, she could feel her marshmallow hair become more liquidy and she looked like a deer in head-lights, but yup. 100% calm, chill, and not ready to silently scream into her pillow.

‘Alright, calm down. She just said hi. What are you, five? Just answer her.”

Her hands didn’t move to type for a few moments before she typed something, looked at it a few moments, and then promptly deleted it.

‘Just say hi. How hard is that?”

She finally typed, sending, “Hey!”

Did she seem too excited? Did she reply too fast. Oh well, too late to deal with that now. Now wanting to just send that, S’more quickly send a, “Surprised you’re up this late. Didn’t take you as a night owl.”

Oh my goodness, she should of just stopped at ‘Hey.’

Peach Float let out a soft giggle upon reading S'more’s reply.

“I could say the same to you.” She typed, a small smile on her lips. She turned herself over, now resting on her stomach so that she wouldn’t drop her phone on her face. If it were to slip.

“Wyd?” Peach then sent. She honestly hoped it wasn’t a ‘too soon’ sort of thing.

“I guess so,” S’more sent, in response to the other cookie’s first text. She couldn’t help but smile a little, even if she felt a tad-bit called out. Peach Float wasn’t wrong, she was just as much awake as she was. S’more slipped out of her covers, careful not to disturb the cookie bear at the foot of her bed, now that she no longer intended to sleep for a little bit.

“And nuthin much,” She admitted, looking around her room once more before slipping off of her bed and quietly tredding over to her bedroom door, sending a quick text before turning the knob. “About to get something to eat. How bout you?”

“Just chillin with my boi.” She smiled as she sent the text, rubbing Peach Pit’s head gently. Peach contemplated sending a picture, but thought better of it. That would be really weird, wouldn’t it? Well, that and the fact that the camera flash would scare Pit half to death.

“I’d like to be playing my guitar Tbh.” She then sends. “But I feel like it’s kinda too late for that.”

S’more smiled at the though of the pinkish pit. She had met him more than once, and she had to admit he was an adorable pooch. A bit jumpy, but lovable none-the-less. “Maybe just a little,” S’more agreed, sending the text once she made her way through the dark house, expertly avoiding toys still left on the ground that wanted to poke into her feet, and furniture that wanted to stub her toes. She didn’t dare turn on a light, in case it woke anyone up or caused one of her still awake siblings to come and see what was up. And although she loved them dearly, she was not awake enough to both hold a conversation where she was, and over the phone. “I can’t play ANY instrument to save my life, my sister plays guitar too, though.”

She felt the cold tile of the kitchen, and groped around until she grabbed a hold of the fridge handle, opening it gently, letting the light shine in the dark room. She then stopped, realizing she should clarify. Rootbeer Float and Peach Float had only met Sugar-Glass so far. “Not Sugar, btw.” She almost chuckled at the though of the little cookie trying to hold up and play a guitar that much too large for her. “My older sis.”

“Oh! You have an older sister! I thought it was just you and Sugar-Glass.” Peach braced herself up on her elbows before sitting up in bed. That would keep her from dozing off, if it ever came to it. “It’d be cool to meet her! Maybe see her guitar skillz.”

She laughed as she added the ‘z,’ but also contemplated just taking it off and having it spelt with an ’s.’ Though, it was a bit too late, seeing she’d already sent it. Peach Float let out a soft groan at her possible mistake before finally getting up out of bed, careful to not wake up Pit. She didn’t know what she’d do while up, but she knew she didn’t want to stay in bed.

S’more snorted at the letter replacement, finding it a tad amusing, but trying to keep herself as quiet as possible. Oh my goodness, she was such a freaking dork, Than again, Peach Float had been the one to send it, so she was reassured in the fact she wasn’t the only one who found a moment’s worth of amusement by it. "I’m sure she’d love to show them off sometime. Maybe next time she visits,” S’more said before scanning over what was in the fridge, disappointed at the lack of anything that seemed appealing at the moment. At least until she spotted some left-over pizza from the night before. Yes, it was not the time for such a food item, but did she care? No. Her sleep schedule was already wack, why not her diet as well.

She grabbed the box before softly closing the fridge door and sneaking her way back to her room. It would be a bit weird to eat by herself in the dark kitchen/dining area. S’more closed the door behind her, and went to go settle into an old love-seat that was pushed against a wall, right below a set of windows. It had been her brother’s. She sat the pizza box down, and opened the top before sending another text. “And yeh, no. I have a pretty big family. I think. idk a normal family size, tho.””

“Wow.” Peach found herself seated at the kitchen table. Just, well, sitting there. She didn’t really have anything better to do. “For me, it’s just my bro and I. And our pets.”

Rainbow Sherbet, her brother’s cockatoo, awoke when she entered the room and decided to keep her company. He was currently perched on Peach Float’s shoulder, peering at the phone’s light. He knew they took photos and he was quite the bird for selfies. She laughed, pulling up the camera and snapping a quick pic. It was just of her shoulder, the bird perched there pridefully.

“Speaking of pets, someone heard me up and wanted to say hi.” She captioned, sending the picture. Peach scratched behind Sherbet’s wings, earning a pleased coo.

S’more hadn’t expected a photo so soon into messaging back and forth, but she quite liked it. The bird, or burb, once again, she was a dork, perched on her shoulder was quite an adorable sight. Even if she had seen him doing that before, it was nice to see it in picture form, Sherbet standing with as much pride as a bird could.

“Ooh! Tell him I said hi,” She sent, then regretted it. She wouldn’t of if she sent it to one of her siblings or friends, but she didn’t know what she was doing when it came to texting her. She didn’t want Peach Float to think she was strange or anything, both because they worked together, and well, the other cookie was cute. Yeah. She was the first S’more had found attractive since, well, yeah. Let’s just say its been a while.

“Hold on,” She sent before taking a picture herself. It was Sprinkles still sleeping, partially on the bed, looking as adorable as a large cracker bear could be. Which S’more thought was quite adorable indeed. It might by bias, though. 

“Sprinkles is still sleeping. He has a better sleep schedule than me, I guess,” She captioned.

S'more was snuggled up in her covers, resting against a mountain of pillows with an old and worn-out teddy by her side. Her actual pet bear, a sweet animal cracker with a coating of pink icing, rested half-way on the foot of her bed, half of his body still on the ground since he couldn’t fit all of himself up there. He was resting soundly as S'more scrolled through her phone, occasionally reaching up to scratch  under her hair-wrap, which prevented melted marshmallow from getting on her stuff as she slept. It was a quiet night, the other members of her household either asleep or quietly doing stuff in their own rooms to gives the ones that were actually sleeping some peace and quiet. She scrolled, looking at picture after picture. She was following some music based accounts, so she wasn’t surprised to come across a video of someone playing a guitar. What she was surprised about was the cookie who was doing the playing. Her guitar skills were lovely, and she found herself quite impressed by the music that played quietly out of her phone’s speakers. She hesitated a moment before clicking onto the account before scrolling through to see all the pictures and short videos she had, S’more obviously recognized her boss, who was in a few of his sister’s pictures, and was even ‘jamming out’ in one of the videos, but there were many other cookies she didn’t recognize. Besides Peach Float, of course. She smiled to herself as she found a picture of the cookie happily viewing a wonderful sunset. S’more scrolled back up, and spent longer than a few seconds hesitating and debating with herself before sending a friend request, more than a little nervous.

Peach Float laid in her bed, snuggled up with Pit, who was fast asleep. She was on her phone, having received a friend request from someone. She tapped on the notification, smiling when she recognized the cookie.

Although she didn’t know S'more all that well, Peach hoped to become more acquainted with her. Seeing as they were coworkers and all. She accepted the friend request happily, and started contemplating on whether or not she should then say something.

Peach Float went with the latter.

“Heya!” She finally sent. After roughly five minutes of deleting and rewriting multiple things she could’ve sent instead. Why was that so hard?

S’more had gone from staring at her phone to blankly staring at the ceiling, going through he five stages of grief, or well, regret in this case as the collar of her shirt now found itself being chewed on, the fabric getting damp as her phone rested on her chest. Should she have sent the friend request? It wasn’t a bad thing, but was it weird? She was his boss’ sister, after all, and it would just be awkward if the other cookie ignored it. Maybe she wasn’t even on right now, yeah, maybe she had time to retract the friend request. That’s all she would have to-

Her phone lit up, and she took a few moments to compose herself, even though no one was there to see her, besides her lovely Sprinkles(Name in the works), who was still sleeping soundly. She took a deep breath before looking at the notification. ‘Heya.’ Yeah, yeah, she defiantly wasn’t freaking out right now. Yup, not at all. Sure, she could feel her marshmallow hair become more liquidy and she looked like a deer in head-lights, but yup. 100% calm, chill, and not ready to silently scream into her pillow.

‘Alright, calm down. She just said hi. What are you, five? Just answer her.”

Her hands didn’t move to type for a few moments before she typed something, looked at it a few moments, and then promptly deleted it.

‘Just say hi. How hard is that?”

She finally typed, sending, “Hey!”

Did she seem too excited? Did she reply too fast. Oh well, too late to deal with that now. Now wanting to just send that, S’more quickly send a, “Surprised you’re up this late. Didn’t take you as a night owl.”

Oh my goodness, she should of just stopped at ‘Hey.’

Peach Float let out a soft giggle upon reading S'more’s reply.

“I could say the same to you.” She typed, a small smile on her lips. She turned herself over, now resting on her stomach so that she wouldn’t drop her phone on her face. If it were to slip.

“Wyd?” Peach then sent. She honestly hoped it wasn’t a ‘too soon’ sort of thing.

“I guess so,” S’more sent, in response to the other cookie’s first text. She couldn’t help but smile a little, even if she felt a tad-bit called out. Peach Float wasn’t wrong, she was just as much awake as she was. S’more slipped out of her covers, careful not to disturb the cookie bear at the foot of her bed, now that she no longer intended to sleep for a little bit.

“And nuthin much,” She admitted, looking around her room once more before slipping off of her bed and quietly tredding over to her bedroom door, sending a quick text before turning the knob. “About to get something to eat. How bout you?”

“Just chillin with my boi.” She smiled as she sent the text, rubbing Peach Pit’s head gently. Peach contemplated sending a picture, but thought better of it. That would be really weird, wouldn’t it? Well, that and the fact that the camera flash would scare Pit half to death.

“I’d like to be playing my guitar Tbh.” She then sends. “But I feel like it’s kinda too late for that.”

S’more smiled at the though of the pinkish pit. She had met him more than once, and she had to admit he was an adorable pooch. A bit jumpy, but lovable none-the-less. “Maybe just a little,” S’more agreed, sending the text once she made her way through the dark house, expertly avoiding toys still left on the ground that wanted to poke into her feet, and furniture that wanted to stub her toes. She didn’t dare turn on a light, in case it woke anyone up or caused one of her still awake siblings to come and see what was up. And although she loved them dearly, she was not awake enough to both hold a conversation where she was, and over the phone. “I can’t play ANY instrument to save my life, my sister plays guitar too, though.”

She felt the cold tile of the kitchen, and groped around until she grabbed a hold of the fridge handle, opening it gently, letting the light shine in the dark room. She then stopped, realizing she should clarify. Rootbeer Float and Peach Float had only met Sugar-Glass so far. “Not Sugar, btw.” She almost chuckled at the though of the little cookie trying to hold up and play a guitar that much too large for her. “My older sis.”

“Oh! You have an older sister! I thought it was just you and Sugar-Glass.” Peach braced herself up on her elbows before sitting up in bed. That would keep her from dozing off, if it ever came to it. “It’d be cool to meet her! Maybe see her guitar skillz.”

She laughed as she added the ‘z,’ but also contemplated just taking it off and having it spelt with an ’s.’ Though, it was a bit too late, seeing she’d already sent it. Peach Float let out a soft groan at her possible mistake before finally getting up out of bed, careful to not wake up Pit. She didn’t know what she’d do while up, but she knew she didn’t want to stay in bed.

No. Her sleep schedule was already wack, why not her diet as well.

S’more closed the door behind her, and went to go settle into an old love-seat that was pushed against a wall, right below a set of windows. It had been her brother’s. She sat the pizza box down, and opened the top before sending another text. “And yeh, no. I have a pretty big family. I think. idk a normal family size, tho.””
