my home country, indonesia, is currently facing a corrupt regime that prioritizes the interests of the people in power over preserving the democracy, rights, and wellbeing of its citizens. just recently, it was announced that members of the DPR (house of representatives) would receive a salary raise/housing allowance that is over 10x the minimum wage, while many of the citizens struggle to afford even small homes.
this out-of-touch, insensitive decision sparked nationwide protests to occur. however, things escalated after a delivery driver was run over by a police vehicle. his name was affan kurniawan, and he was not even joining the protests, he was out doing his job delivering food. the police who ran him over got away with what was essentially a slap on the wrist, facing only 20 days of detainment. all of this caused the ongoing protests as well as police brutality to intensify.
a recent case of this being on the 2nd of september, when police attacked two university campuses at midnight, long after protests had wrapped up for the day, using tear gas and rubber bullets. several activists were also forcefully detained by the police.
we are actively being silenced and censored, local news stations are forbidden from reporting on the protests, and recently, tiktok live and instagram live were shut down in indonesia, making updates on the situation harder to access.
