Digital Recording Principle's/Discussion.
• What analogue techniques would be the most beneficial to my production skills? • What analogue techniques would be the least beneficial to my production skills? • Is there any benefit to me to learn “old school” techniques such as machine calibration, tape-flanging, 2” editing, etc.? • How can I improve those skills that are relevant when I don’t have access to that type of equipment? • What digital techniques can you think of that have no connection whatsoever to the analogue world? -Finally, what is the one thing, above all others, that you hope to learn this month? Â
I will start with saying, I am fairly new to this, the actual mixing and mastering correctly that is, all I ever used are digital DAW’s to record myself with very limited knowledge on many plug-ins and there use was for, but as we go with this month class I find my self interested in many and many options we actually have to improve our sound. EQ and Compression and how it improves its dynamic, definitely beneficial to gain knowledge upon. If I had to pick a not so beneficial technique,(which i stumbled by upon research) I would say tape recording, just for the fact that we are way past that. With that being said, I do believe that old school techniques are beneficial because a creative artist might have a request for such or even have questions and it would be nice to have knowledge to share.
Methods to improve my skills would be taking advantage of the “Lynda.com” website, there are plenty of videos. I will also use Wimba classes, Mr. Mike Reaves is extremely knowledgeable in the business and I enjoyed the fist class even though it took me two sits to finish it, reading material on the subject and doing research on you tube may help as well. Digital techniques that have no connections to the analogue world be Latency, The Sampling Theorem, Nyquist frequency and Bit reduction. I look forward to finally work on Pro-Tools, properly creating an audio bus track and explore plug-ins in depth to avoid presets.
