Dynamic Duo

Earlier this month we had a pleasant studio visit from Laura Kreft, director of the fine arts museum and chair for the department of visual arts at Houston Baptist University. Her graduate course on gallery and museum practices at HBU gives students first hand experience in curating an art show of their liking. Once the class agrees on exhibiting the work of a specific artist, the task of curating an art show follows.

It so happened that in that course sits Michael Leanes, friend, artist, and furniture design graduate student at HBU. I met Michael at the Winter St Studios during a market we were both part of. He had an impeccable furniture display that highlighted his craft. Check them out here. Michael, during the gallery and museum practices class, suggests to his peers that they curate a show for Abel and I! Absolute excitement ensued once we heard HBU was going to host an exhibit of our paintings.

During her visit, Laura got to hear our individual stories, not only of the paintings selected, but the whole progression of our careers and how its continues to evolve. She hand picked a few of each of our work to show based on her knowledge of the gallery space and then she was off. Now, we're back in the studio, making frames for some of the paintings and gearing up for this show on March 2nd. This will be the first time we show together in a gallery since Voz Alta and ICBC in 2009 back in the west coast. I am excited to show Houston what I have been working on for the last three years and it would be a treat to count on your attendance to this show!

People + Words

In trying to keep up with this bullet train of a year, I am making myself sit down and address all the current events going on. Before I'm all caught up I have to go back a few weeks. One of the coolest things to kick off any new year was the studio visit by our good friend Michelle Lenzen of People + Words. 

Michelle came down and was all ears. She heard both Abel Garza's and my stories on how we started painting, highlights, disappointments and all. It was fair to say she understood where we were coming from. Don't take it from me though. I can go on, but describing this is pointless. Please go read it for yourself! Full interview here

Young Space

The holidays are here and I'm off in another land. Back home in Tijuana, MX to be exact. Just a short break to recharge and be close to family. 

Before I arrived from Houston, I had a quick Q&A with Kate Mothes who coordinates Young Space, a contemporary art blog geared towards showing emerging artists. This morning I was happy to find that they had a spot for me this month on their site!
