How do you say “meatballs” in Catalan?

Sembla que el nom tradicional és pilota, der. de pĭla ‘projectil de plom’, encreuat amb pīlum ‘dard, javelina’ (que explicaria la i en comptes de la e, car ĭ hauria donat e, com en cast. pelota), més el sufix -ota; del sentit militar va passar al del joc de boles i després, al culinary (s. xvi); s’usa també el diminutiu, pilotilles (no enregistrat), amb el suf. dim. -illa, perquè són més petites que la pilota de la carn d’olla. Al cat. sept. tenim boles de picolat (reduït a boles o a picolat; també carn picolada 1, 2), sintagma format per boles, procedent de l’oc. o del fr. (< llat. bulla, que en evolució genuïna va donar bolla en cat. ant. ‘segell, marxamo’ i avui mall. i men. ‘bola de joc’), aplicat al joc de boles i estès després al menjar, i per picolat, der. de picar, d’origen onomatopeic, més l’infix intensiu -ol (com el de esmicolar, espigolar) i el sufix -at indicador de resultat; també s’usa el dim. bolilles 10-12, 15, 88, 92, 97.
Mandonguilles és un manlleu al cast. albondiguilla o almondiguilla, der. de albóndiga 189 o almóndiga 153, 190 (< ár. búnduqa ‘bola’), encreuat amb mondongo ‘mocada; operacions de la matança del porc’; mandonguilla és una dissimilació de mondonguilla i les dues formes han sofert una equivalència acústica b = m.
Altres noms més locals: l’alg. polpetes 85 prové de l’it. polpette; gresalates 37 és un dim. de gresala ‘cassola’ i és una metonímia pel lloc on es preparen; tarongetes 188 és resultat d’una metàfora i faceüres 183, 185, 186 (faceüretes 183) és un der. de farcir (< llat. farcire) amb el sufix -ura que confereix idea col·lectiva, com el castellanisme rellenos 190.
Els noms normatius són mandonguilles (des del DG1, 1932) i pilotes (des del DIEC1, 1995).
My humble English translation:
It seems that the historic name is pilota, derived from pĭla ‘lead shot’, crossed with pīlum ‘spear, javelin’ (which explains the use of i instead of e; ĭ would have become e as it is in Spanish pelota), plus the suffix -ota. The military usage led to the usage for balls in sport and, later, the culinary usage (in the 16th century); the diminutive pilotilles was also used, with the diminutive suffix -illa, for meatballs smaller than the pilota that is used in carn d’olla. Northern Catalan uses the phrase boles de picolat (shortened to boles or to picolat; carn picolada is also used in map regions 1 and 2). In this phrase, boles comes from Occitan or French (derived from Latin bulla, directly leading to bolla, which in Old Catalan meant ‘seal, stamp’ and in modern Mallorcan and Menorcan means a ball in sports); in Catalan it was used to mean a ball in sports and, later, the meaning was extended to a ball in cuisine as well. Picolat, ‘minced’, is derived from picar ‘peck’, of onomatopoeic origin, plus the intensifier infix -ol- (cf. mica ‘a speck’ and esmicolar ‘crumbling, shattering’; espiga ‘an ear of grain’ and espigolar ‘harvesting grain’), and the suffix -at which indicates the result of an action; bolilles is also used in map regions 10-12, 15, 88, 92, 97.
Mandonguilles is a borrowing from the Spanish albondiguilla or almondiguilla, derived from albóndiga (map region 189) or almóndiga (map regions 153, 190) (ultimately from the Arabic búnduqa ‘ball’), crossed with mondongo ‘tripe; pig slaughter’; mandonguilla is the result of phonetic dissimilation from mondonguilla, and both forms have been subjected to the b = m acoustic shift.
Other localized phrases: the Algherese polpetes (map region 85) arises from the Italian polpette; gresalates (map region 37) is a diminutive of gresala ‘casserole’, a metonymy for the vessel in which the meatballs are prepared; tarongetes (map region 188) is a metaphor from taronges ‘oranges’; and faceüres (map regions 183, 195, 186; faceüretes also in 183) is derived from farcir ‘filled’ (from Latin farcire) and the suffix -ura that confers the act of filling, not unlike the Spanish borrowing rellenos (map region 190).
The standard Catalan phrase is mandonguilles (per the Diccionari general de la llengua catalana, Pompeu Fabra, 1932) or pilotes (per the Diccionari de la llengua catalana, Institut d’Estudis Catalans, 1995).
