“Me?” Tim turned away from the voice that bellowed out from the dark. His hands pushed farther into his pockets as he mustered every bit of positivity he could. “I don’t believe we’ve met before…urm my name is Dick” 

“Dick Grayson.” Real smooth, Tim, real smooth.

Barbara sat behind her computers and shook her head as she watched Tim through the security cameras, “You panicked didn’t you,” she teased gently through his ear bud.

“I know you weren’t but I ain’t real happy with the hours right now either.” Christian sighed. “I feel like I see Spivot more than I see you which is wrong on so many levels.” His fingers curled beneath her bicep as he gingerly pulled her in closer. “Why don’t we get away? I am overdue for some time off and I don’t think it would hurt to pull rank on some of the rookies doing clean up.” 

“Are you sure,” Barbara knew how important his work was right now. With the police department in shambles right now they needed every able-bodied, seasoned, officer they could get. “I’m not selfish enough to take you away from saving people’s lives. And you’ve tolerated my crazy schedule for a long time. I’m okay with tolerating yours.”

“Oh of course, what eccentric billionaire wouldn’t.” Jason drawled, matching her tone with a small smile. It faltered a little at her request though, his mouth dropping open in shock at the request as he stared at her. “…You’re serious?” He questioned softly. He hadn’t always seen eye to eye with Christian, but he made Babs happy, and that was all Jason really needed to be on board with it. He hadn’t exactly anticipated being more than a guest at the wedding just like anyone else, certainly not involved in such a pivotal part of it. “Babs…” He could feel his eyes beginning to well-up embarrassingly as he took her hands in his, a watery laugh escaping his lips. “If you’re sure then yeah, I- I’d be honoured.”

“I can’t have my dad, so having my baby brother is the next best thing,” she said with a small, shy smile. “It’s not going to be big, there’s a very real possibility you might get a call in the middle of the night sayin we’re heading to Atlantic City. We don’t want to tempt fate or any of the rouges. But you, Tim, Steph, Dick, Alfred, and Damian. You have to be there. I’d like to think Bruce would come, but I could also see him just sending a really expensive present. I think Steph and Lux will be there, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Tim said he can’t go. And it might be weird for Dick, so if he bows out, I’ll understand. And Damian is Damian. But I need you and Steph more then anyone. You’ve both picked me up when no one else could. When I wasn’t strong enough you’ve been my strength. And when I was scared, you held my hand. And Jason, I’m terrified. No Bat has been able to get married with out it blowing up and someone dying. I can’t lose him. I don’t think there would be enough piece of me left if Christian died.”

Jason flicked through the file handed to him with a curious smile. His fingers brushed over the thick parchment paper of the degree certificate a little reverently. Hanging it up anywhere felt a little disingenuous, but it still gave him a sense of longing to see it, fake or not. “Plausible deniability - can’t fake my death when I didn’t really know who I was in the first place, huh?”

“Plus faking his son’s death in hopes of giving his son a better life then he had is right of the eccentric, billionaire, Bruce Wayne’s lane,” Barbara said with a smile. She paused before continue, “You know my dad won’t leave Gotham. He’s kind of worried that if he and Batman leave Gotham may combust. But that means he can’t be here for important things. So I was wondering, would you as my brilliant little brother, consider giving me away at my wedding,” she asked shyly.

“I’ve brought together the brightest technological minds in the family.” Tim pushed away from his make shift desk situated in the middle of his living room. “I think it’s time we go fully off the grid. I’ve had a lot of time to think about this and I’ve got a base code for a fully self sustaining network to ensure none of us, brainwashed or otherwise, can compromising moving forward. 

“Now, I need your brains to help me make it happen.”

“As promised,” Barbara said with a grin handing Jason the file, “A whole new life. You studied the Humanities in Prague while you pieced your life back together. Your memory was damaged during the explosion and Bruce saw this as an opportunity to give you a life outside of Crime Alley and The Wayne Legacy.”\

Christian brushed a few wisps of hair from her eyes before allowing his hand to settled along the crook of her neck. “I’m sorry for all the long nights I’ve left date night hanging. The station has been in a bad way lately. Between Max being burned and in the wind and the Ivy incident, the place has been real barren in regards to real justice.” Christian shook off the thought before dragging her closer. “Tell me what’s been floating that beautiful head of yours?”

“Hey, I wasn’t saying that to make you feel bad. I know you’re working hard and things are really hard right now. I just want you to know I miss you, but I’m not angry or suspicious, or any of the hundred of things you’re thinking. I just missed you and I do love you so seeing your face in the morning always makes me happy.”

“This is a real nice set up, Gordon.” Sara hissed. “Although, I’m a little surprised that I had to find out after almost being shot by a laser. I know Star City isn’t what it used to be but I never thought you’d leave for Central City. Let alone leave the tower for a midsized loft owned by a cop.”

Barbara grinned at her friend. “I gave up being the VP of Wayne Enterprises. I wasn’t happy there any longer. I realized wanted more then 70 hour weeks with jerks who didn’t take me serious. Christian let me crash at his place. And I still own the tower. That’s my baby, I’ll never give her up.”

“I always look so forward to our little chats, Dawn. But no, I brought you hear to get information from you. I want to know what went wrong in your world and how we can make sure it doesn’t happen here.”

“Just you, Rose, Rory and Z.” Jason answered with a small sigh. He hadn’t gotten round to telling the rest of the family. He honestly wasn’t sure if he wanted to tell them - Tim and Steph were dealing with enough, Dick was MIA enough for it to be concerning and he really didn’t want to take Bruce on a trip down memory lane with his bloodlust.

“I did enjoy my time in Prague.” He muttered with a strained smile at her suggestion, giving a small shrug. “If you can make it work then sure… go for it.” He agreed. Not like he would find much use for it, but it would at least be a decent cover for a few of his missing years.

“I get that,” Barbara agreed thinking of the problems most of their family was having. So from what I know we’ve got four options, 1. Kill the Joker, which is not really an option. 2. meditation and herbs, which is how I’m assuming you’ve been controlling this and it’s not working and more. 3. Find a  Khushu Idol and let you sacrifice your blood to it weekly. Which I’m not crazy about, but it would work. Or 4. We get you the Lotus elixir,” Barbara said knowing it would not be easy to get her hands on it, but she’d do it. 

“I’ll make you a great fake life. What do you want to major in? Literature? History? You are not majoring in Criminal Justice just so we’re both clear. I want you to be able to leave this all behind if you decide to.”

“Yeah, I doubt any of us are gonna learn that’s not the case.” Jason noted with a grim smile as he ducked his head in the face of her understanding. “I used to think choosing my targets carefully, making sure I felt they had done something ‘deserving’ of death… that it controlled it. But I don’t think it did. I was still indulging, just because I chose who to hurt doesn’t stop the fact I was doing it for my own sake.” He muttered.

He frowned as he thought of his attempt on the Joker’s life, his ultimatum as he stared down Bruce - his life or Jason’s. Bruce had made his choice, and stuck a batarang in his shoulder. “No.” He muttered. “It felt good at the time, having him at my mercy but after it…” He shook his head. The emptiness, the hollowness of his ‘victory’ had gnawed at him relentlessly until it ran him into the open arms of the League. “But they say you need to kill the person who killed you so… who knows. Maybe leaving him alive is the reason I’m still… cursed with it. If I killed him… well, a lot more than just me would be better off.” He muttered. It was not going to be a popular opinion among the family, he knew. Least of all with Bruce. But if there was the possibility…

“I don’t doubt your forgery skills, Babs. But I think if I come back from the dead with a degree from Harvard people might have some questions about how I went unnoticed.” Jason joked as he offered her a small smile. “I… don’t know what life I want. I liked the one I had, where I didn’t have to deal with… anything.” He shrugged.

Barbara lifted his face to look at her. “We’ll find something that works, Jason. You’re not alone anymore. Who else knows you’re struggling,” Barbara asked taking his hand in hers and holding tight to it. She’d be his anchor and hold him to the light no matter what. This was her little brother. She wouldn’t fail him. Not like she had before. 

“Please, I can do so much better then Harvard. I was thinking Kings College or Masaryk University in Prague. Remote. Somewhere no one would know your face so you could’ve blended in while you recovered your memories and sense of self.”
