I started a 30-day inspiration series and I intend to post on my website everyday starting from today. Today started with a bang lol because I couldn’t post on my website because of some server issues. . Millions of people are dying every year but you are still alive. The breath in your lungs should be validation enough that what you carry inside you is needed in this world. The world is breaking apart and needs all the help from talents and skills and ideas that you have. That is why you are here, to make a difference. I know I told you all, that I started a blog. I deleted it, because it wasn’t what I dreamt of all along. I wanted a self hosted site. I couldn’t manage it. Lol. So, I went for what I wanted and I’m glad I did. Now, iyanuadebiyi.com is ready to go live on Sunday Night. . Since 2014 when I started to write on social media, I wanted to start a blog but never got to do it because I thought I had to hire a web developer and spend lots of money building something I wasn’t sure I could keep up with. A few months ago, I had a spiritual encounter, where I was suddenly enveloped with the urge to go ahead and start the blog. Like almost everything I do, I started afraid, made so many mistakes, doubted it, cried, got back up, googled it, asked for help but mostly had to do it alone, tried it, tried it again and here I am. . So many people have websites, so this might seem like such a paltry testimony, but for me it isn’t. It has taught me a lot and this is just the beginning. Transitions are hard. That moment when you are waiting on the breakthrough, hoping, doing the work, trusting. The miracle feels forever away, feels like you’ll die in the wilderness and never get to the promise. . I’ve been feeling like this too; anxious about who I am becoming. Wanting her to show up now. Wanting the dream to become a reality now and giving all my love and attention to who I will be and what I will achieve tomorrow that I starve today of the love and honour it needs. . You may be so dissatisfied with yourself, status or career that you focus all your energy on wishing and hoping. That’s great. But I just want you to know that the person you are right now needs your love and affection more than the person you’ll become in the future. Yes, this person striving and failing yet trying again. This person risking everything to dream. This imperfect person who loves you so much and wants to see you become the best. This soul that has been so battered but chooses to keep going. These tired hands that work themselves to fatigue yet find strength to come together in prayer, even a seemingly flimsy ‘😩 God when?’ comment on other people’s posts (is a prayer too). This person , this place needs all the love you can muster at this point. . If you’re going through a hard place, always remember that it is not the good life that wants your love. It already has it. It is this rough place, where you are fighting and praying and crying and hoping that needs all the love. . Also remember, nothing is permanent. Even pain. You will soon have the things you are desiring now. But if you don’t love this place, there’s no magic that will make you love where you are headed. . Have a good night, family. A few facts about me: . My name is Iyanuoluwa Adebiyi. Iyanuoluwa means the wonder (miracle, surprise) of God, but I fell in love with the literal meaning; the opening of God’s mouth. You can call me Iyanu (pronounced ee-yah-noo). . I would have been born a still birth but a nurse no one had seen before, would never see again, came to disrupt the procedure with prayer. After that, I was born with loud crying and squinting eyes. . I feel everything intensely and take time to process my feelings - art helps. I’ll . The skin on my fingers are quite wrinkled. I don’t know why but in them I see my grandfather’s hands playing the keyboard, when I am writing on my computer keyboard. I come from a lineage of creatives; my great grandmother was a praise singer, my grandfather played the keyboard and was an orator, my father was a poet when he was very young. He became a pastor the year I was born. . I’m a lawyer, writer and performance poet. I studied law in order to be an activist, only to discover that it is the poet in me that is the true activist. My core message is hope. . I love to use my hands a lot. Create things out of paper, make abstract drawings. I also create poetry videos and other content for social media platforms. . As a child, I was a member of a singing group called The Breakthrough Singers (composed of my sisters. My father used to teach us to sing. Now I don’t understand how that happened as he can’t even hold a key. . I spend at least 70% of my everyday alone. . My favourite food is pounded yam and egusi soup. Do not select some parts of yourself and throw away the rest. All of you is worthy of love 💕 . I wrote this letter to myself during the weekend when I was feeling all sorts of ways about not reaching my targets and feeling like a failure. I kept on feeling like crap until I reached the point of realization that this life is all a dance - even the missteps. If I can celebrate the parts of my life that are working and successful, then I should celebrate the failures with even more intensity. This quickly shifted my mental energy from negative to positive, I became full of gratitude instead of regret. . I previously announced on my stories that I’d post less of my face on my TL and asked for opinions. Some were welcoming of the idea and some were not. They advised me to keep it the way it’s been as they love my deeply personal captions that come with pictures of myself that I post. They also said stuff about branding that made serious sense to me. . This forced me to think about my real intentions and discovered some fears and shame. I know this is the generation of ‘it’s not that deep’ but it is actually that deep. Since childhood, I’ve been so scared of my body. Of looking at myself in the mirror and every time I did look at myself it was to point at one imperfection or another. I used to and still scream when my sisters and mother stumble into me naked in the bathroom. I hated seeing the bodies of other women. It was so uncomfortable to have anyone look at mine. Lately I have been thinking about women who used their naked bodies for protest, especially the Aba Women of 1929. I’ll pour all my thoughts in an essay I’m working on, but let me just say this; . When God decided to come on earth, it was through a woman’s body that he came. This is something I’ve been contemplating since December last year - the entirety of God becoming human in a woman’s body. She could have chosen to abort him, she could have eaten something poisonous, she could have slept in a wrong position and that seemingly small decision could have truncated the prophecy and salvation of those who believed in the promise. I believe that this action of God was a statement to the universe that there is everything holy with a woman’s body. It should be treated like a sanctuary but I’ve found with the greatest terror that it is not. In fact, it is often desecrated. It is seen as something shameful... for women to take to nudity as an angry man would take to vulgarity to make a point, to use their bodies as protest is a show of what her body has been reduced to. . We have to find ways to teach our children that their bodies are not atrocity. . I started a new practice of writing letters to myself. I read some of those letters and tested up this morning at the office. It is strange how kind we can be if we substitute the ‘I’ for ‘you’ and begin to love ourselves like we are loving someone else. A committed relationship with the self is one of the most beneficial relationships to me. I am trying to do more than write letters. Love myself through various paths.
