Maintaining Perspective Exhibition

Maintaining Perspective is my final year project. The installation explores the way we think about negative thoughts and how we are our own worst critic.

This is my exhibition piece for our graduation exhibition 37 Degree Show. I had a lot of good feedback from the public, it was amazing. Now I feel really sentimental now because it's all over, 4 years of hard work showcased in just 5 days. Now, time for internship! Shall maintain a more positive perspective. Like Dr. Suess said “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.”

Set up for graduation exhibition which is happening this Wednesday, so excited. I wanted to simplify my project so that the impact of the message will be more powerful. The long reel is to represent the way our negative thoughts are never ending and repetitive

So this was what I presented last week,

These are the comments and feedback I've got:

Make it more aesthetically interesting with adding red and blue, now it's like one white block

Making the statements bigger and smaller copy

Place footprints around the installation in order for the audience to see the words (because they're anamorphic).

For me, I felt like I've lost sight of the reason of using house of cards concept as the audience are not interacting that way and I'm taking a lot of time to set up, so I might simplify the structure, less words and bigger type. Other than that, I probably need to use better quality paper and printing.

Maintaining Perspectives

My final project explores on the negative thoughts we have. In my research, I have learned that the negative thoughts that we have might not be true. My project uses anaglyph to show the different perspective of thought that we could have.

My initial idea was to use house of cards so that the audience can interact with the installation, by creating thoughts that start with "I am", "If I" and "It is", the audience could put together the installation while wearing 3D glasses

The idea was inspired by House of Cards ArtPrize installation at Rosa Parks Circle.

Degree Project 2 Proposal

Communication Objective

In this project, I want to explore how our thoughts shape us. The experiences we have and the things we learn along our life are important in how we perceive life. Our thoughts ultimately determine our attitude towards life. The project explores the negative self-talk we have in our head and the lies that it makes us believe of ourselves. Negative thoughts are natural but how we manage them will make a difference. The project is targeted towards young adults and adults from ages 20-30 years old because in those stages, we’re supposed to know who we are and figure out what we want in our life. Many people let past experiences, influences from other people and environment around them to control and define who they are. We are our own worst critic and sometimes we let our demotivating thoughts stop us from achieving our dreams.

  Design Objective

The design is supposed to make people aware of their thoughts and how they could see the truth behind those negative thoughts. Eventually, learn to let those thoughts pass and not let it affect who they are. This project is not about preaching positive thinking; it is about accepting failure, discontentment, embracing insecurities and enjoying uncertainties. That is the only way that we can fully embrace life with all its ups and downs.

  Design Execution

An installation piece which is a conveyor belt with a long reel and posters to show the negative thoughts we have and the duality of positive thought and negative thoughts. Also to let the audience be aware of their own thoughts, so they can realize that they are the author of their own story. There is also a website to help people realize their negative thoughts are lies, along with 3D glasses.
