There must have been someone who determined the value of money, first. The size of the rails on a train track? The magnitude of electricity? Laws and Regulations? Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things!The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all.It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role… Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. It’s funny they accuse others of trying to make emotional arguments when their entire argument is, “you feel in your gut that the post-birth child is more valuable.” It’s entirely emotional. And the emotions are what they should be. In nature, a baby is second only to a pregnant woman in terms of potential value to the group/gene interest. There are no embryos in nature that could be but haven’t already become pregnancies.
To the religious believer who opposes abortion on the basis of a soul etc. this question would require answers to more questions. If saved from the fire, could these embryos actually be made to grow later or are they doomed by other factors as well now? If they could be actually saved, and the religious person knows that, then they are correct to choose the embryos.
Personally, I do not go for the “at conception” argument, but it’s not hard to see that it’s entirely possible to answer this question in an intellectually consistent way from that perspective. It just goes against *nature* and *instinct* not their actual understanding of religion and morality.
The funny thing is, a lot of people answered the original question honestly; but because he didn’t like the answer that they gave him, he just ignored those.
Even funnier when people point out the myriad questions the hypothetical as presented raises with it’s thousand embryos. The child most likely has living parents or family, and even if not there are foster care systems that will most likely take them.
But “homing” even five embryos for the trolley problem ratio would be a huge question mark considering they need to stay frozen, and then you need to find people willing to adopt embryos randomly saved from a burning fertility clinic, whose records are potentially destroyed in the same fire, meaning prospective parents may know nothing about the child they’re adopting, like their medical background.
