so when Scott met osteon, he immediately switched up right?

He basically became besties with the person, sharing more info that he has shared with most of the other students(who he has known for months atp) which I honestly think is very interesting for his character.

Once a stronger, older, person shows up to teach them and protect them(security wise at least, not from the horrors :D), Scott immediately showed a different side to himself; one he had likely needed to suppress as a main pillar and future mayor of Tegrith.

He was clearly very curious about Osteon, having less trouble trusting the new person because he is a dragon rider, just like the rest of them!

He freely answered questions that he's been asked by others and vaguely denied or ignored.

Also, after finding out about Osteon's wither magic, Scott immediately asked them to, quite literally, "hit me!"

I have a feeling that the prospect of someone showing up, being incredibly strong and experienced and able to protect the people that Scott loves, has nearly endeared Osteon to him.

Scott is also, from what I've seen, one of the physically strongest players. His magic is definitely one of the most versatile, and many people rely on him for various things or information.

Remember, Scott is only 23. He had to grow up very quickly in order to help his parents and the other villagers in Tegrith his whole life, almost completely on his own after Pyro left at 15.

The fact that there is now someone who could take some of that residual pressure off of him?

I am willing to bet that we see Scott act a bit more relaxed, at least in Osteon's presence, and maybe he'll be able to join in a few more shenanigans rather than just chaperoning them :)

I love the idea of Scott’s ice magic providing relief to Osteon’s chronic pain due to their wither magic. It being a factor in why Osteon is a bit warmer with Scott when they’re having 1 on 1 conversations.

I would also like to raise the idea/point of ice magic having a particularly interesting relationship to wither magic. With withering, it is the power over the active process of deterioration. However, ice is regarded as one of natures greatest preservers. Freezing something can slow down or even outright halt the deterioration of organic matter.

In that sense, you could view ice magic as a blanket of protection against wither magic. But is that the right way to look at it? Wither magic is based in the inevitability that things break down until there is nothing left. Ice magic challenges that inevitability and offers an opportunity to take things more slowly. Ice offers a gift of more time when for wither it was meant to be fleeting. By all means the very nature of ice and wither magic are in opposition, and yet it is when those two work in tandem that opportunities for new life emerge. The withering of organic life to allow new life to harvest what’s left behind and grow strong, the bitter cold of winter protecting dormant life for a greater flourish of life later in the spring. They are both essential to the cycle of nature, needed and necessary for life to go on even when it isn’t apparent.

Magic musings in mind that’s what makes Scott and Osteon’s potential friendship all the more fascinating to me. Those who wield forces of nature that actively work in tandem to kickstart the ever recurring genesis of living things finding camaraderie in one another. One in constant pain from it, the other being able to provide relief regardless of it.

Dont think about how Scott is one of the few characters who actually understands hunger, and not the “oh i misses a meal”, but the true depth of it.

With how in tegrith, there is no “living off the land” with how harsh the landscape is, and how horrible the weather is for half the year.

With how on his way back with supplies, he couldn’t eat what was given to him, because someone else might need it more.

With how he was left on the road as a baby, for who knows how long. Meaning that the first real thing he learned was to starve.

Now he won’t ever let someone stave, saying that “everyone deserves to eat”. Even when its characters he doesn’t like, people he believes to be evil or working against the students, he provides them food. He keeps food stockpiled, especially ones that fill more, and is the first one to offer when others are in need. His need to give others food being so ingrained into him, one of the first pieces of magic he learns is to make magical food.

Distant relatives of mine used to sit in front of the building in their village where the homes and belongings of deported jewish people were being auctioned of for pennies, and they wrote down every person who entered to join the auctions.

Definitely remember the ICE agents and keep the disdain alive! But also remember the civilians who profited off their neighbours abduction and murder. Who owns their houses now and their cars, who is buying their businesses for cheap?

I kept forgetting my nighttime antidepressant so I set an alarm where the sound was a recording of me saying "HEY. TAKE YOUR FUCKING PILL" because I thought it would be funny. It was funny about three times, and then it started making me mad and I'd dismiss it right away to make it stop. So I handed my phone to my partner, who made another recording sweetly saying "Okay Shira, it's time to take your medication" and now I don't get mad anymore and I take my pill. The "compassion over punishment" camp has gotta get something wrong one of these days

But your hand is already on the lever.

Divert the trolley to save one person. Kill your friend. Everything is happening too fast. Your friend says to do it. No time to think. You walked him here from a cliff edge and he helped you tie him down. The guy with his arm on the tracks says "hey can you get on with it already?" Other people are already thanking your friend for his sacrifice. They tell him he is a good man, and he says he has them so fooled. He looks at you and tells you this is the right thing to do. He is covered in blood. Your hand was already on the lever.

One(1) person leaves the town unscathed and everyone acts like it was worth it
