Wax

The tourists were awed, but I only thought

that the saints with their glossy foreheads

don’t know nothing ‘bout sweat.

They must have when they were close

to death-- the real martyrs,

but not their wooden replicas,

who never died because

they were never alive, although

like St. Stephen they will not take to fire. So,

I lit a votive for my ideology.

Later, they will ask me

what went through my mind, as

the over-indulgent high-vaulted ode

to replication

met the same fate of the cigarette in my hand.

They will later say I have the right to remain silent.

(I did not know that you could not smoke there.)

They will later say they heard the martyrs screaming.

(Those were just the tourists.)

The heavy criss-cross of microphones looked ominous, as eager reporters jostled for an answer.

"Were you and Henry sitting in a tree?" asked Apply Daily.

Cara blinked politely, muted in her response.

"We hear love is in the air with you two!" screamed Banana Weekly.

"Or is that wedding bells we hear?" The Carrot Post ventured.

Cara smiled slightly. Next thing we know, she thought, Durian Mail will be reporting her purchase of a carriage for a phantom baby. With a sigh, Cara opened her mouth to speak; the microphones surged forward.

"Clean out your earwax and listen up!"

She leans in and, in a dramatic whisper, she uttered her most famous line, "It's none of your beeswax."
