The Path to Hell is Paved With Good Intentions - Biography
There was once a time that Jack knew what love and family was, the feeling of belonging that came with being a part of a loving family. Regretfully, he has none of that thanks to a tragic incident that resulted in him almost freezing to death under a sheet of ice as he attempted to save his sister from a tragic iceskating incident. While he luckily didn’t die, he was left an amnesiac, forced to wander wherever the wind took him in some attempt to find a place where he belonged. That need swept the twelve year old right into the hands of a man he only knew as ‘Pitch Black’, a renowned criminal who after witnessing Jack sneakily pickpocket along a bustling downtown area of Reading, Pennsylvania, knew he’d found his next goldmine.
He lured Jack in with promises of a roof over his head and of a makeshift family of criminals and thieves that he could call his own. Sure, it wasn’t the ideal that came to mind when he thought of a family, but after spending months alone and readily ignored by the general public, he craved the feeling of belonging. So he went with him gladly, agreeing to assist with petty crimes in return for the mentorship of Pitch himself. For a while, it was a sweet deal. He grew up under the tutelage of some of the country’s greatest criminals, learning how to cheat, steal, and fight over his adolescence in the place of any traditional schooling. Still, a life of crime kills innocence, and that life had quickly hardened the once sweet boy yearning for people to call his own into a shell of a man, someone who enjoyed chaos instead of seeing it as a necessary evil. What was supposed to be a second start at family had quickly turned into something that had only managed to corrupt the boy into something wholly more dangerous.
With his newfound villainy, Jack also became much more headstrong. He grew to resent Pitch for ordering him around and insisted on doing things his way, something that often created a heavy contention between the two of them. Overconfidence and pride drove a wedge between him, and by the time he was eighteen, Jack decided that a group setting was no longer the place for him if he wasn’t in charge. He left in the middle of the night, vowing that he was going to be a lone wolf from that night forward, and since then he’s associated himself with no one.
It’s not as if Jack ever wanted world domination like other villains in the city. He’s more content with a life of simpler crimes, mainly theft. This desire for stealing was what led him right to the item that gave him the edge he needed. It was surprisingly easy to steal a cryogenic weapon - though truthfully, he didn’t really understand what it was at the time and simply assumed that it was a cool looking gun until he froze a security guard who’d almost managed to catch him - but with it on his belt, he elevated himself to the next level. Before anyone knew it, the newly dubbed ‘Captain Cold’ (we never said the kid was creative) was prowling the streets, empowered with the feeling of invincibility as he continues heists around the city. Stay out of his way, and you’ll be fine: after all, he’s not willing to physically damage anyone if he doesn’t have to, but a pretty penny in his pocket may just drive him to do monstrous things.
