Monty has a lot on his plate. He’s always been the poster child for chaos and while he may be a little more mature about it now, he is still in fact chaos incarnate most days. He is currently going through his second divorce from Elizabeth Swann. He’s taking this pretty hard despite the smile on his face. He doesn’t really know how to handle that so of course, he’s just doing everything he can. He’s running the Pit Stop which has become a labor of love for the most part while co-parenting his twins with Sally and Caspian with Elizabeth. He’s also using the free time he has to train Francesco, Junior, in stock car racing while getting himself back out there too. Though the Italian was a lot more than he bargained for. They’d become quite the temptation and it was eating at Monty’s guilt. Because there was no way that he at 40, was going to mess around with the child of his former friend and lover, it wasn’t right. But then again, Monty had never been one to follow rules. Junior pushed him to his limits and it was nice having someone push him to be better and believe in him...and also flirt shamelessly with.
He’d cut his dream a little short when he’d decided to move to Elias with the twins following after Sally who was living out her own dream of being a successful lawyer which is how he’d met Elizabeth. Now, he was the father of 3 with 1 more on the way, tying to decide if maybe it was time to officially retire. He was almost 41 now....but then he stood out on the track watching Junior fly by and he missed it. He’d lost who he was in the chaos of wanting everything and maybe it was time for him to actually embrace his own dream.
past !!
The life on the farm had been picture perfect. He’d been his father’s shadow. He’d learned that hard work had it’s just reward and that if he wasn’t giving his everything, then maybe he wasn’t giving anything at all. He’d been taught that his powers were nothing more than a nuisance early on and that it should be something that should be ignored. His father had been a stoic man but it turned out that most emotions just set him on fire, quite literally. He was punished when he used it and was ignored when he asked about it. But Monty’s lightning was constantly throbbing in his veins and he’d shocked far more people than he could count. The open fields were perfect for letting it all out and there were times he tempted the sky to shock him just so he could feel something without being afraid. He was the only child and so everything fell on him but Monty wanted more than this. He chased after the speed. Every day he ran faster and faster until he was the lightning in his veins. He’d get an earful when he was caught but it was worth it. The only thing that made him feel remotely like that were the stock cars at the local raceway. He became obsessed with the cars and would finish his chores at the speed of light (literally) so he could sneak out to watch them. He’d made his choice and even if it meant leaving his parents behind, he couldn’t keep living a life where his powers were to be ignored and he was supposed to embrace simplicity. He wasn’t born for this. He had to be more so he put his mind to it and graduated high school early. He barreled onto the scene and even though he had to deal with jealousy and bullying because of how young he was, Monty wasn’t someone who would be beat.
He was Lightning not too long after that. The fastest racer on the track and success had followed. He was the rising star and the one everyone was waiting to see fail or rise to the top. He’d been used to people’s unrealistic expectations of him. He was Lightning McQueen and he would not lose....except he did and while it was a tie, it was so not what he wanted. He’d ended up in Radiator Springs due to his own inability to be responsible while running through life. He was trapped there but he was exactly where he was supposed to be even if all he wanted to do was run out of the half-abandoned town. He’d met Doc, Sally, and Mater, and a family who learned to love him for who he was. They saw how his powers made a mess of things and they still helped him. He still hadn’t won the race after he’d gotten back to Los Angeles but he’d gained something a lot better. A family who loved him. He made a home in Radiator Springs and even though he went all over the world, there was nowhere he’d rather be than in the small town. With Sally, they’d help build it up again and bring back the life that the residents deserved. Sally and Monty just made sense. She was the logic to his wild imagination. She grounded him and reminded him to use his brain. Doc had agreed to be his crew chief and he thrived under the mentorship of someone who genuinely cared and wanted him to succeed despite everything else. His cockiness was replaced with humility and his anger with kindness. He was still the hot shot, far too young and dumb sometimes but he was able to see through the flashing lights and find what realy mattered.
He’d been young and dumb and Doc had been the father he’d needed. The one who didn’t reject him for feeling as loudly as he did. Someone who taught him his powers were a gift not a curse and that he was allowed to use them and not shove them down until they consumed him. He was also someone who held his hand and accepted him regardless of who he loved. Lightning’s father couldn’t tolerate so much ‘disrespect’ from his son. He’d refused to stay on the farm, refused to subdue his powers, refused to live his life quietly, and that meant loving who he wanted to love. Doc had been the only parent he had when all was said and done and his loss still left him with a hole in his heart. There was big part of him that would always grieve that he hadn’t been given more time with him.
Lightning had fallen for Francesco Bernoulli and while their fling had been explosive and burned out quickly. They’d left a mark on his heart that he’d never be over. Though, they were able to move past a failed relationship into a wonderful friendship that lasted years, it left him with the doubt that maybe his father had been right and he’d only been experimenting because he was too experience everything. It had taken a lot out of him to get over though. He’d constantly turned back for the time when he’d been with them. He wondered for years if it had been love but his heart knew that it had been and no amount of self-doubt or time would erase that he’d loved Francesco Bernoulli with all he had.
Sally had made sense. They’d been friends for so long and one thing led to another and they were married but Sally wanted a different life and Lightning had been too young and immature to notice until it was too late but their twins had been their greatest blessings. Lightning had slowly become Monty again. He refused to be a bad father to his children and that meant cementing himself in a town he didn’t know. Elizabeth had been a breath of fresh air and impossible not to love. They’d danced around the subject of their own individual dreams though. They’d tried to make it work but the truth was Monty was chafing in the disguise he’d unknowingly put on. Elizabeth dreamed of the sea while Monty stood on the paved roadways he’d run away from home for.
future !!
Monty learns that the slow lane isn’t a punishment. That finding peace and tranquility in love and family is possible. That dreams can be accomplished and that finding a new one isn’t the end of the world. He learns that Lightning deserved to be happy and that he is a great father to wonderful children who all live their lives to their fullest because he showed them how. The bravest thing he could do was love who he’d always loved and stop trying to fit an ideal that his father had set for him because that’s what had dominated his life. He’d worked himself to the bone and forgot to enjoy his career. He’d gone through marriages that hadn’t felt right but seemed to be the right thing at the time in order to fit an aesthetic more so than enrich his life.
His roots were cemented in him though and instead of hating something that stifled him, he’d decided to love it instead. He’d made his home a farm after he really retired from racing and he was raising a much bigger family than he’d anticipated. He took in the animals that were hurt or just needed a little more care. He especially has a soft spot for retired racing horses. He wanted his children to learn the good parts of his childhood. Manners were important and respect was given and earned. The love for every creature and that hard work did pay off but playing hard was just as important. His legacy was his and there was no need for any of his kids to follow in his footsteps though some did of their own free will.
His home had become the one all the kids, even the ones that weren’t his, gravitated too. He was pretty easy-going but stern enough that those kids stayed in line. He spends his summers in the Italian Riviera enjoying everything retirement gave him with the one person who loved him more than he ever thought was possible.
He focuses more on the things that winning never gave him. His trophies were still empty cups on his mantle that were reminders of his accomplishments and motivations to keep going. His life couldn’t be all gas and no brakes or he would have missed it.
