We are finally back from break from the Theatre Explosion class and the Junior Ensemble class. In Explosion we have starting working on Shakespeare which will be performed at the students' showcase at the end of the class. In Junior Ensemble we continued blocking The Tempest.
At the Island Sewing School I have just completed my first complete piece - a peach dress. I’ve already begun my second costume piece - a peach dress, while I wait to get fabric for my third costume. The peach fabric was donated to Michele so she has an abundance, and would love for it to get used. I found the two patterns in Michele’s extensive collection of patterns and the second dress is almost finished. These dresses are completely different in many ways whether it be the style, directions and details like sleeves. The next costume I plan to make is Sandy from Grease. This will include a long skirt with a poodle and a shirt.
Yesterday was my third day with Michele at Island Sewing School, and I already started on my dress design. As this internship unfolds, I would love to make character designs as it is an integral piece of theatre. I have begun cutting a mock up for a dress for the character “Tracy” from Hairspray. The entire character design has not been created yet, but I have settled on this dress for the base of the character design. Michele gave me a great (content and size wise) book that contains directions on patten making. A pattern is the semi-transparent sheet of paper you cut and trace you dress around. I have cut almost three quarters of the entire design. By the end of this internship I hope to have 3 or more full character designs, ranging from musicals, to straight plays, to shakespeare.
The Theatre Explosion Class had their final production today! The students were great in the show, and fully engulfed in their true characters! This show was greatly enjoyed by many of the students’ friends and family, who clearly loved it. (Big thank you to Jamie who came to support the actors and myself!) The concept, script and characters were all created by these students. As you can see, I had my big break in the class’s play Bridge, and was so excited to be a part of the production! The class is taking a short winter break, but will resume in mid January! I will be back at Trinity twice between then to chaperone the student nights!

Today was my first day at the Island Sewing School. Michele and I went to Jo-Ann’s in Warwick, and discussed the different types of fabrics and different ways they are created. I found a pattern - an outline of a piece of clothing - that i liked, and will be creating a dress. This dress will hopefully serve as a costume for something I will do in the future, but would like to learn how to make it.
Today I had a shadow day at the Newport Sewing school! Michele was so great, and taught me how to sew with no prior knowledge! It was super fun and I can wait to learn how to do costume repairs and possibly create my own costume!
Today in the Junior Ensemble class, we had to do a lot of blocking. In the allotted amount of time, Natalie could only work with half of the students. She assigned me as director for a scene and let me block the scene. I asked the kids what felt most comfortable during the blocking of the scene and they were even able to block it themselves at some points. The students were very tired from Halloween, but they pushed through it. We now have almost half the show completely blocked.
Today in the Theatre Explosion class, the students worked more on their original play. This production explores the boundaries of old folks, their pasts and the game of bridge. In this Ohio nursing home, one woman decides to start a bridge club. Each student came up with a different character and backstory. They've even asked me to play the character of the nurse, who is still being developed.
Today in the Junior Ensemble class, Natalie taught a the students about beats and actions. It was really interesting to see that these kids, aged 11-14, learning the same lessons I recently learned in my Salve Class. Of course, they may not have been going into my detail as my class did, but they definitely got a lot out of it. At about 3/4 of the class in, Natalie had to work at a booth at the big event going on at Trinity. At this time, Natalie left me with the students to teach them a little more about beats and actions. We also played a couple games... I didn't win.
Today was the final show of the first part of my project. In the show, the students performed 5 of the scenes written by Jen and myself. Through about 2 months of directing, the students were able to act in two scenes (per student). It really was so awesome to see the students finally act it in front of people other than Jen and myself. They loved the scripts and even added a little improv in their scenes. I was the "guide" of this trail and got to see every scene in front of every group. This was an amazing job and I loved helping with it. Writing and directing several scenes and seeing them performed was really a great opportunity and I'm so happy I was able to experience it.
Today in the Theatre Explosion class, the students conducted a couple improv scenarios of their bridge party. In these scenes they discovered back stories, relationships and other details. They embarked on the plan to cast me as a nurse who hands out pills and such. Can't wait to see what else they come up with.
I’ve been able to continue my Salve education and take yet another course. This semester I will be learning in Reggie’s class, Advanced Acting. So far, we have read eight scripts, and now we are working on scenes. Working in the same direction as hour natural reactions approach, we have been heavily outlining our personal scenes. We learned about beats and actions, and made Reggie copies of our outlined scripts to be analyzed. Throughout this class, we will analyze the scripts and make them as strong as we possibly can.
As the assistant of the Junior Ensemble class at TRC I am able to work as a chaperone for all of the productions that this class is offered to see. Their first show of many was Julius Caesar, which was so cool to see. I got to see Joe Wilson Jr. play the part of Marc Antony. Joe played Scrooge when I was Tiny Tim in The Christmas Carol in 2008. This was such a breathtaking play, where they used gender roles, the setting in time and lots of blood. This Shakespeare show utilized projectors and video cameras and added a modern twist. The next show the class will be seeing is Brown University Theatre’s production of The Tempest, which the Junior Ensemble class will perform during the year.
Took a bus trip to New York City again with Mem and Jasmine looking at a college in the Greenwich Village. We went The New School: Parsons, which and alum of the arts advisory, Daddy Starbucks, currently attends. We weren’t able to see Kyle, but there were many additions in the college hunt, Jasmine’s STP, and our closets.
Each week I’ve been doing my best to attend the Prep-For-Rep class with the Newport Children’s Theatre. Each week the kids have been preparing a basic outline of their scripts. Jen, who teaches this class and attends Salve, has written several of the scripts, and I wrote the rest. The kids will be performing them at Paradise Park on the 22nd and 23rd of October!
Started my first day assisting Trinity Repertory’s 5-7th grade class. It was great meeting the kids, and learning a little about what they do on a day to day basis. I look forward to many of the upcoming classes, and the student night. The class is invited to 4 of the shows this 2015 season, and I am excited to chaperone each event! The first production we have the opportunity to see is Julius Caesar. This production, in particular, will be great to see, because Julius Caesar is a female character(commonly played by and written for a male).
Last weekend, my mom and I decided to take a trip to New York City to look at potential college options! We went to an early tour at the prestigious Juilliard School. Out of Juilliard's 1,900 applicants, 18 Theatre Arts students were accepted last year. The school is mainly orchestral students, but is also well known for theatre students such as OITNB stars Danielle Brooks and Samira Wiley. We also took a tour with Marymount Manhattan College, which reminded me of the Met the most because this school offers internships and each class is made up of 35 students at most.
