The Blacksmith

aka MY GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES aka PLEASE LOOK AT MY PRECIOUS BLORBOS I PROMISE THEY'RE SO GOOD

- a queer fantasy adventure graphic novel series currently in progress about a 5'3" master blacksmith teaming up with a big mysterious stoic vigilante-type dude so they can travel all throughout a magical world recovering the blacksmith's stolen marvels of magical technology - all the while becoming closer not just to each other but also to their country's various resistance movements.

-- Think the tone of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" but for adults, in that the story contains a whole lot of fun and silliness while also dealing with some truly heavy themes; but at the end of the day, the core of the story is the humor and heart between the protagonists and the friends they make along the way. The "for adults" part means the main characters are grown-ups, there will be a version of the book with sex scenes, and in general the violence is bloodier and the horror elements are scarier - but without needless abuse plots carelessly thrown into the story just for shock value or to make it seem more "grown up".

Took me three tries to get this video right with the music. 😅

Color thumbnails for all 30 pages of chapter 2 of my graphic novel are now in place in clip studio, alongside the concept art and reference images relevant to each page! LET'S GOOOOOO!!!

Next step is delineating the panels in clip studio and dropping the appropriate concept art in each box!

The warden joins Alistair in front of the doors. They cradle each other's faces, sharing looks of love and happiness.

They then turn towards the doors and away from the camera, holding hands.

The doors slowly swing open, revealing a gorgeous pastel sky of violet and yellow clouds as the sun rises. The two of them are bathed in the warm light.

Then, a close-up shot of just the Warden's eyes as they close squinting in the light and then open wide just as the song finishes with a flourish of percussion, irises shining in the light. The screen then fades to white.

Listen. I am cupping this so so gently in my hands and holding it out to you with a quivering heart.

This is David the blacksmith from The Blacksmith, which is the fantasy adventure graphic novel series I am working on. (Comedy! Drama! SLOW-BURN!! Healing from trauma! Sky pirates! Magic healing therapy library! Armadillo-themed supervillainy! Gay found family fighting the forces of capitalism! And SO MUCH MORE!!)

For the last 6 years or so, my brain and soul alike have been lit up and kept warm by working on this project. For all that time, I've dreamt of the joy of sharing these characters and stories with an audience, but lately I've felt like if I wait any longer, I will lose motivation. So please, enjoy a quick little introduction to my lovely little guys in the hopes that this will stir up even a little bit of precious interest in another person:

1. In this scene from the opening chapters, David is rescued from bandits by a mysterious vigilante. Here, he is seeing the sky for the first time in a long while:

This is very old concept art, but I'm still quite pleased with it! ^_^

2. David and his new mysterious warrior ally, Kuruk, have some disagreements about travel arrangements early on in their journey before they become friends (text is not verbatim bc it is from a text post, but it captures the Vibe):

For context, David is about one millimeter shy of 5'3", and Kuruk is 6'6", which makes him 15 inches taller than David! (And yet Kuruk is the trans man out of the two of them!)

3. Kuruk's standoffishness does not last as long as he'd like. (Men touch each other's faces in acts of casual and not-so-casual intimacy a LOT in this story. AS THEY SHOULD.)

4. Throughout the first book, David develops a permanent disability. And unlike many characters who become disabled, he is neither magically cured nor is he relegated to the background of the story so another protagonist can take over!!

This scene is probably from the second book. Based on a true story lol:

The first shot is of the warden pointing accusatorily in the exact pose popularized by the lawyer video game Phoenix Wright. It pans rapidly over to Loghain, who in turn is doing the hunched over pose that Phoenix's opposition Edgeworth does when he is on the ropes.

The video cuts to Loghain and the warden locked in combat, their swords clashing as they glare at each other.

A blood splattered close up of Loghain's shocked face, followed by a close up of the warden looking grim and determined. The camera pans out to show a silhouette of the Warden's sword through his opponent's chest.

The final shots show the warden kneeling and solemnly presenting a crown to Alistair in front of a crowd of people.

The Warden opens up frightened fraught eyes, looking up at the massive doors opening up into the darkness of the Deep Roads. All of his friends gather behind him, but his memory keeps flashing back to when he was forced to enter these roads alone, three armed guards crowding him from behind.

From every angle, his mind flashes back to this event, and despite having armor and better weapons now, he looks just as scared.

A close up of him now looking furious and determined and raw as he glares ahead into the darkness, the massive doors slowly closing behind him and casting his face in shadow until all that remains are his eyes in the dark.

During this sequence, he continuously flashes back to his younger self crying and terrified, plus a vision of his smirking brother after betraying him. The eyes in the darkness begin to glow red.

The Warden faces down Darkspawn and giant spiders, while flashing back to struggling with those monsters last time he was here.

I cannot describe to you how utterly un-welcome this man is in my party by the time he shows up.

Every time I try to give Oghren a chance, he's like "AWESOME, THANK YOU *farts* I AM SO EXCITED TO HANG WITH YOU AND HARASS WOMEN", and I just??? No thank you, dude???? I'm good?? You're not invited???

Like, brah, my friends just rescued me from the depths of my trauma and then helped me kill my evil brother - what about this established dynamic is making you think "what these guys need is a fella whose every line of dialogue is punctuated by FREQUENT WET BELCHES"???

And I can't justify doing his side-quest because it involves convincing an innocent woman to settle for him, and I just . . . can't do that to someone. XD

The Final Battle Commences!! 🔥🔥🔥

Then, we cut to the warden handing the little girl over to her mother. The warden is smiling, and the mother and child are both weeping with relief and happiness.
