Van and Tai's whole relationship is so Romeo + Juliet - tragic star crossed lovers and all that. Even the (near death) by poison/toxic gas, being unconscious and then Van dying via dagger only to be discovered moments too late to save her. I guess within this comparison Melissa would be Tybalt, Simone is Rosaline, Misty is the Nurse obviously and teen Van is The Chorus, summarizing the tragic tale. There's also the speed at which they go from dating again in the adult timeline to Taissa calling Van her wife - all within the span of a few days.
When Van went to the doctor I did notice it was shot similarly to the fish tank scene from the *1996* film Romeo + Juliet but assumed at most it was a nod to Vans love for 90s cinema but with the addition of the Hamlet poster behind Van in the cavefume classroom and her tragic, violent death (caused by a feud she wasn't really involved in but got swept up in anyway) and the use of the song "exit music for a film" by Radiohead which was on the soundtrack of R+J as well -I now believe this scene was foreshadowing for all the cinephiles like Van herself, that she was unfortunately doomed, and that Tai will most likely be the next Yellowjacket to die.
For never was a story of more woe, than this of Taissa and her Van ya know
hiii love ur acc sm!! i wanna be doomcoming jackie for halloween and was wondering if you had any ideas on how to make her headpiece?? <333 or any other details from that outfit (i found the dress on depop)
Sure! I have a huge post about the Doomcoming outfits in a couple days that will have more information about some of the other pieces in her look but I’m utilizing this as a tutorial for how to recreate her headdress!
Supplies:
• Green Floral Wire
• Faux Eucalyptus
• Stapler
• Scissors
• Orange, Red, and Brown Fabric strips
(Optional: Materials to make Faux Leaves)
• Matte Mod Podge
• Flat Piece of Plastic
• Chalk Pastels
• Tissue Paper
• Markers
1. The Base
The base of Jackie’s headband is made with green floral wire so that’s where we’ll start. The first thing youhave to do is measure enough wire to wrap around your head. I decided to just cut the wire once so I then secured the end of wire to create the loop, all the while making sure it still fit onto my head. I then just wrapped the wire around the loop while trying to replicate the look of Jackie’s crown. I found wrapping the wire around something solid like a pencil helped create the coils and then I wove the coils into the crown to create the braidlike look.
2. The Leaves
I actually got some fake leaves online but I didn’t like the color or shape in person so after a failed attempt to make the leaf flower I just decided to make my own with supplies I had. That is not at all necessary but I still included how I made them in case you guys find it useful. If you’re using regular leaves go down to the starred section below for the next steps.
To start making my leaves I knew I needed a piece of flat plastic so I found a lid to an old container. Any piece of plastic will work but it’s crucial that it’s something that the mod podge won’t fully adhere to.
Once you have your plastic, you’ll want to rip off a piece of tissue paper big enough to make a sheet of leaves. I used two different kinds of tissue paper, light colors like white and pale pink and more saturated colors like pink, orange and green. You need three pieces per leaf sheet, two light and one saturated. You can do it with all light / saturated colors but I find it looks better if you’ve got a saturated color in between two light ones.
Take your chalk pastels and lightly rub it over the pieces of tissue paper on each side. Use colors like brown, gray, as well as leaf colors to add some dimension. Use your fingers or a brush to blend the chalk into the tissue paper. The chalk shouldn’t be too saturated as to not see the original color of the paper but not too light not to alter the color.
Coat your plastic piece with mod podge making sure to have an even layer not too thin or too thick. You’ll then take your tissue paper and start with the saturated piece by putting it on top of the mod podged plastic section. Use a paintbrush to flatten the tissue but don’t worry if the tissue folds or creates bumps, you actually want this texture to make the leaves look more realistic. Coat the top part of the saturated tissue piece with mod podge and then lay a light tissue piece on top, flattening the sheet of tissue. You’ll let the mod podge dry completely before peeling the mod podge/tissue sheet off the plastic. On the saturated tissue side of the sheet apply a layer of mod podge. Put the last light tissue sheet onto the fresh mod podge by pressing it down (again trying to create texture) and then coat the top with mod podge to seal it in. (See the photo on the left for an example of a finished leaf sheet).
Once the sheet is dry you can start sketching out the leaf shapes onto the sheet using a similar colored marker. I made a couple different sized leaves but it doesn’t really matter either way. You’ll want about four leaf per sheet though if you can fit more that’s good too as you can use them to help add more volume to the leaf flower.
I also used the markers to darken the edges by smudging the ink and cross hatching in various areas around the outer edge. The markers are also used to create the stems and other lines to make the leaves look more realistic.
When cutting out the leaves I swiveled the scissors back in forth to get a jagged edge versus a straight line.
Once the leaves are all cut out and detailed with markers fold a crease down the center stem(?) line and lightly in the middle of each side.
* Arrange the leaves in a circle and as you go staple them in place. You could also use hot glue or something similar but stapling was just easier for me to do. Leave a small hole in the center to allow for the next step.
3. The Sprigs
On Jackie’s crown there’s green sprigs throughout. When looking for similar foliage I thought the eucalyptus looked the most similar so I took a couple pieces of that and cut the leaves so that they were shaped to a point.
The sprigs I bought had a chunky plastic part at the end so I used that to attach the leaf flower to the actual crown part by sticking it through the small hole in the flower and then wedging the stem between two of the strands of wire on the crown. (See image on the right for a closer look).
I also put some more sprigs through the wires underneath the flower to make it look more similar to Jackie’s crown.
4. The Straw?
I’m not sure what it is but Jackie’s crown also has what appears to be pieces of straw sticking out from underneath the leaves on the crown. To make the straw I just cut long thin pieces from the excess leaf sheets and bundled them together at various lengths. I then stapled them together leaving an extra “straw” piece out to tie the bundle together for additional security. I then tied the straw bundle to the center Eucalyptus using the extra straw piece to secure it to the crown.
5. The Fabric
Jackie’s crown has four(?) pieces of fabric hanging down from underneath the flower of the crown. At the time I made the crown I wasn’t sure how to recreate the texture/waviness of the fabric but I think if you braided a few pieces together and ironed it the fabric would be wavy once you unravel the braid.
You’ll need two orange strips, a reddish one, and a brown one. I just had two strips done when I took the pictures because I was dying orange strips to be the right color but I didn’t get them done in time.
To attach the fabric I stuck the top of the strip through the wire (in different sections) and stapled two individual strips together to secure them in place.
You’re now done and have completed Jackie’s Doomcoming crown!
Hopefully this is helpful but if you have any additional questions about the process or need any clarity just let me know!
DIY Wilderness Acolyte Costume Part 1: Pelts
Whether you’re looking to make the funeral cloaks, an acolyte costume, or another related piece of clothing from the show, a key component is the fur pelts. The costume I’m specifically recreating in this DIY is Lottie’s pelt cloak from season 3 but I’m going to cover a lot as the contents of this tutorial applies for a lot of different costumes.
Supplies:
Paper
Scissors
Fabric Paint
Faux Fur Fabric
Suede Fabric
Sewing Needle (Or a Sewing Machine)
Thread
Step 1: Paper Template
Before we can do any of the other steps in this project, we first need to draw out the shape of the pelt onto some paper to act as our guide. I used a roll of construction paper to map out my pelt but you can also tape individual sheets together as well. The majority of pelts on the show are rabbit (as with the ones I made for Lottie’s cloak) but depending on your costume you may need to create different ones. What I found most helpful was to Google the average size of whatever pelt your making and then looking at some pictures of the pelt both in the show and general ones online to help figure out the shape you want.
For rabbit pelts the average size is 10-18 inches in length and 8-13 inches in width. Mine ended up on the bigger end of the scale but be mindful because making them too big or too small may affect how many pelts you can ultimately put on your cloak. To add more variety I used two different pelt designs for my costume but you could create more or less templates, whichever you’d prefer.
Step 2: Cut Out Fabric
Once the template is complete you can now start cutting out the pieces for your pelt. I learned once from a Youtube video that it’s easier to cut faux fur from the backside (wrong side of the fabric) so you can actually see the shape you’re cutting better and I’d recommend you do that as well. In order for the fur to overhang on the suede part once the pieces are sewn together I cut a little less than an inch over the size of the actual template.
For the suede I also cut out the pieces from the “wrong” side of the fabric and because the “right” side of the fabric needs to face out once sewn to the fur I flipped the template on its vertical axis. When cutting the suede fabric I added few millimeters around the template to give me seam allowance.
For my fabrics I bought two faux fur blankets on Amazon (gray and brown) as they had both a fur and suede like side and were in the colors I needed. I had enough fabric for my purposes with the throw size blankets but I’d be consciences about the amount of fabric you may need (I am short/petite but taller people would probably need more).
Step 3: Paint
I got “tye-dye” fur fabric as I didn’t want to have to paint solid colored fur to make it more rabbit like but I’ll admit that If I ever redo this project I might do that instead as it would look a little more realistic that way. Painting the pelts though would have been much more time consuming so it’s probably better if you’re doing less of them or have more time. My best advice for that would be to look at reference photos of real pelts or the ones in the show to figure out the pattern to paint the fur.
The suede is much easier to paint. To give variations I decided to mix the brown color myself with two complimentary colors on a color wheel. I tried yellow and purple, blue and orange, and red and green, the last of which I ultimately liked the best. Once I had the brown color I wanted I then added water to make it easier to apply and really get into the fabric. I would recommend that you add the water slowly though so it doesn’t loose too much pigment as I ended up with a couple pieces that were too light.
When I set them up to dry after I finished painting them I draped them on some uneven surfaces which pooled the watered down paint in different places on the pelt to create a fun patterning effect. It’s not necessary but I figured it might be helpful to include as you guys might find it useful.
Step 4: Sew
Place the right sides of the fur and suede fabric together (the wrong sides out) and line up the two pieces so that the edges line up. It can be helpful to use pins to keep the fabric in place so that way you don’t have to worry so much about keeping it lined up while actually sewing.
Sew along the edge but not all the way around as shown in the pink line for reference (leave a gap). Once you finish sewing that you’ll want to flip the pelt inside out through the hole you’ve left to reveal the outside of the pelt. Sew the hole shut as a final step.
Step 5: Repeat!
For Lottie’s outfit I determined based on reference photos that there are 9 grey pelts and 6 light brown pelts used on her cloak. Based on the costume you’re choosing to recreate you could need more or less pelts but just keep following the steps until you’ve completed all your necessary pelts.
Unfortunately because I made my pelts too big I ultimately couldn’t use all the ones I made but it turned out okay in the end. In all I spent a week off and on creating the pelts but it could take more or less time depending on how many pelts you need, whether you hand sew (like I did), etc.
Above is a finished example of one of the pelts. It’s a little light on the back but I didn’t end up using this one in a spot where the suede was super visible. In the next part I’ll talk about how I made the cloak and attached the pelts.
Bonus:
I had room for extra photos in the post so here’s pictures of my cat “helping” me with this project.
Behind The Scenes: Winter Capes
I believe these were used during the Thanksgiving Canada scenes and based on what I can make out I believe the two seen above were likely Natalie and Gen’s. As for the the cloaks pictured below I believe they likely belong to Travis, Mari, and Melissa.

Throwback to an older post: another reason the original script, Misty being obsessed with Jackie instead of Coach Ben was better. According to the script, in sixth grade, Jackie was the only person to give her a card for Valentine’s Day, and that was why Misty was obsessed with her. That’s inherently more interesting than Coach Ben simply putting her on the team.
Instead of a simple, mundane reason, Jackie was the first person to make her feel like someone cared about her.
I love Van Palmer so very much, but it was pretty unnerving how happy-go-lucky they were when eating Coach Ben.
Great acting by Liv Hewson in that scene. Just tossing chunks of Ben in their mouth while making quips about Shauna. It helps show how far they’ve slipped. Not starving or anything.
Even despite their feelings about Coach, the feelings about the act of non-essential cannibalism, and about Natalie’s feelings!!! there’s a lot of disregard there.
Don’t lionize Van.
It’s so easy to forget how cold Van could be but this is the same girl who looked like this
When Javi died and felt 0 sympathy
Also Van hated Coach, she was one of the ones who voted guilty from the beginning if I remember correctly
Like every so often it feels like we have to rediscover that all (yes, all) the YJs are kinda bad people
yes! and crucially - there was no way to survive out there like that without walking away stained by the choice to kill. was it possible to survive another way? probably not, but it's hsrd to say. they chose the way they did, and have to live with that. there's a lot of indicated that van is horrified by all of it as an adult, but she still plays along with tai's queen of hearts plot for a while before she comes to her senses.
makes me think of misty chastising lottie for objecting to nat's hunt/javi's death, saying she started it. and van saying "we made [lottie] like this" or whatever. guilt is a luxury that comes later (except for nat, who on account of her dad's death, is already full of it. and maybe like, robin. hard to say.) and van was an early adherent to the mystical stuff, the justifications, right up until there was a way back to reality.
I love Van dearly, but I feel like everyone tends to forget that Van is... a bully. She gets away with it because she's funny & she is kind when she's kind, but at the same time she consistently picks on Misty. We also see her pick on Mari.
A read I've gotten from Van is that she's very, very good at reading who is on the top of the pecking order (& who's not), & arranging herself accordingly.
(I love her deeply for being such a messy person, & I love the fact that they're all complicated people. How do you survive being someone who doesn't fit in all the way, especially back in the 90s? Being funny & knowing who is & isn't fair to push around.)
YELLOWJACKETS | Season 3, Episode 3, "Them's the Brakes"
"I think Lottie and Nat have a deep understanding of each other." — Courtney Eaton
does anyone else wonder if a similar thought was going thru jackie’s head about shauna while she was slowly dying in the cold
I'm having a lot of fun writing this Y2K x Yellowjackets story
Jackie Taylor is so realistic cause fym we are lost in the wilderness with zero obligations and zero time to lose and your being pissy about me sleeping in?? Bitch we have all the time in the world?? Why you waking me up at the ass crack of dawn....
My favorite YJ joke to make is whenever people are like “it’s Shauna’s fault this happened” “no actually it’s Lottie’s first” “erm it’s Jackie’s” is to go “actually it’s all Laura Lee’s fault because she called her piano teacher a cunt and crashed the plane”
How Jackie and Laura Lee are parallels and foils
Before I begin, I want to say I think narratively this was intentional given that they both have teddy bears. Laura Lee’s is missing its right eye, Jackie’s is missing its left. In other words, we were supposed to take note of their similarities and differences and what that establishes about the other and the narrative as a whole
The first notable thing others have pointed out as well is that Laura Lee is idealized whereas Jackie is antagonized. This is specifically in reference to how the girls felt about them when they died. Laura Lee died trying to save their lives and they remember her as a martyr, whereas Jackie died opposed to the majority, so they view her as a cautionary tale to not hold each other accountable in fear of ostracization. In Lottie’s dream while hunting, Laura Lee “saves” her, and Jackie is nowhere to be found. Lottie, their prophet, views Laura Lee as “one of them”, yet not Jackie.
Laura Lee and Jackie are both in their own respects “firsts” when it comes to the deaths. “The loss of innocence” is something we see with just about every character in Yellowjackets. For most, it’s a traumatic event. For Laura Lee and Jackie, they *were* the innocence lost among the girls. Personifications of their humanity dying. Laura Lee the first of the girls to die, and Jackie was the first to be cannibalized. This is also why I believe they are viewed differently.
Laura Lee died a hero in their eyes, making it difficult to remember her in a negative light (I’ve even noticed some fan interpretations seem oblivious to Laura Lee’s true personality). With Jackie, their outcasting led to her death, and they’d even gone as far as eating her to survive. They need to remember her as a bad person, somebody who “deserved” to die in order to cope.
On top of this, both parallel the religious figure Jesus Christ. Laura Lee died in an effort to save the Yellowjackets, and Jackie’s body was literally eaten (body of Christ?)
Another notable thing is that Jackie lacks something that defines Laura Lee- Faith. In the pilot, Jackie says something along the lines of “lucky you had me around to save you from yourself” in reference to Shauna’s former attempt to become catholic. If we view bears as a symbol of religious faith, teddy bears, and the bear they ate the night Jackie died, we can gather a few things.
One, that Jackie at one point had some form of religious faith that she lost (Interestingly, she views “faith” as something Shauna needed to be saved from, and something she admires out of Laura Lee). And two, that Laura Lee having her teddy bear up until her death and Jackie presumably leaving it behind emphasizes that Laura Lee had faith in the wilderness and Jackie didn’t.
Laura Lee and Jackie also both influence one particular girl each- Lottie and Shauna respectively. Lottie and Shauna are complimentary characters who represent the need for faith and the need for violence in relation to survival. Laura Lee and Jackie both had close relationships with these girls that knowingly and unknowingly urged them to the positions that, after their deaths, led the girls down a spiral that turned them in to the versions we see by the time of the pit girl hunt.
van i dont appreciate you enough. you weren't meant to live from the beginning. you weren't meant to be there. you had to slap your mom to wake her up. your oxygen mask didn't fall down. you survived an explosion. your face got chewed up by wolves and then was sewn up while you were awake to feel it all. your smile used to make jackie feel better. did it die just as she did? in the cold winter nights filled with empty stomachs and fear? you turned to religion and lottie and excused your actions with the wilderness. the wilderness that tried to kill you. the wilderness that you made sacrifices to. you survived when you should've died and it caught up to you.
bless her
I do not play about Jackie being a lesbian who experiences severe compulsory heterosexuality. That is 100% canon to me. She looks absolutely miserable when Jeff asks her to go down on him, she finds every excuse to avoid having sex with him, and when she finally does have sex with a man it’s when she’s passively suicidal, no longer believes in love, and wants to lash out against Shauna. The catalyst for Jackie’s despair and complete loss of hope is discovering Shauna’s betrayal, and when she learns that Shauna and Jeff slept together, her devastation is focused solely on Shauna.
Any time Jackie is with a man it feels like self-punishment or destruction. It’s something she’s doing to herself, not for herself. She is a character suffocated by expectations of perfection and social influence, forced to perform a version of femininity and romance that doesn’t actually fit her. Jackie as a closeted lesbian makes so much sense for her story and her tragic end. Those slumber party make outs were definitely happening.
Jackie being a lesbian isn't a question for me because it affects her character SO MUCH.
Her constantly going back and forth with herself on whether or not to sleep with Jeff, always finding excuses not to while trying to convince herself it's what she wants because of course it is.
But more than that - something I don't see discussed a lot - is how obsessed she was with Shauna's virginity. How it made her feel 'normal' by comparison that she was the one with a boyfriend, in comparison to her somewhat tomboyish best friend who showed no real interest in guys. Any of the other preppy, popular girls Jackie could be best friends with would want to talk about boys all the time and if Jackie wanted to change the subject then she'd be the odd one out. With Shauna she can do her due diligence, gush about Jeff and talk about setting her up with someone, and pretend to pout when Shauna shuts it down to talk about something else. She could talk freely under the guise of going along with what Shauna wanted.
When she finds out Shauna's pregnant Jackie already sees it as a betrayal. Not just because she didn't tell her, but because it means Shauna has had sex with a man. The thing Jackie's so insecure about not being able to psych herself up to do - you can even see it in her interactions with Nat, the mix of envy and disgust she has when confronted with the fact that other girls actually like having sex with men. Maybe she could get by on the puritan idea that women aren't supposed to want sex at all, let alone enjoy it, but that attitude would make her the odd one out amongst her peers too so she's left with this uncomfortable yet socially accepted in-between. Where it's okay to slut shame Nat, but weird to feel betrayed by the fact that her friend had sex with someone else.
Jackie's depression after reading the journal isn't just about her feelings for Shauna - it's the final nail in her coffin telling her she isn't normal, she'll never be normal, and eventually it'll be obvious to everyone around her. Jackie couldn't have sex with Jeff, but Shauna could. She knew he was pressuring her and Jackie couldn't so she swooped in just to take advantage of her biggest insecurity. Maybe seeing Van and Tai together at Doomcoming should've made her feel better, but if anything it hurts more that they found each other and the person Jackie thought understood and accepted her like that was lying. They were dying alone in the wilderness, there was no hope of finally coming out and bonding with them over it when the one person she wanted to come out with liked a boy. She had no hope of being gay and happy, so she forced herself to settle for the next best thing. Being straight.
Maybe if she was lucky a switch would flick in her brain when she lost her virginity and she'd actually be attracted to Travis, but she didn't expect it to. In a way she was lucky - she didn't have to live her whole life pretending to be straight, because she didn't have a life. She died with the persona in tact. In that way, she succeeded.
