Phoebe didn’t think of it when she heard someone sit across from her. SHe continued reading, looking up to give her eyes a break when she saw him. “Seriously? You had to sit there?”

“Hm?” He hummed, looking up and winking as he met her eye. “Gotta problem, blondie? I saw an empty seat and I took it. Are you saying I’m not allowed to sit here? How childish.”

Ariella gives the guy a friendly smile as she nodded her head. “Oh, I know that.. I just – I need to renew these books, but I’m not sure if those self-service check out book things have that option..” 

“Well, they do,” Jackson pointed out, but he smiled and took the books from her anyway. “Don’t worry about it. I was just pointing it out in case you preferred that,” he explained, scanning them for her. He paused when he looked at one of the titles and grinned. “This is a good book,” he said, tapping it.

“Well, good. At least some days I know I can read here in peace.” Phoebe made her way to a near by table, sitting down and starting to read the books she just checked out, making some notes in her phone as she did so.

Jackson rolled his eyes and went back to annotating his music, ignoring the annoying girl - who’s name he hadn’t gotten. Not that he cared or anything (except that it annoyed him that she knew his and he didn’t know hers.) When his shift was over, he yawned and stretched, intending to continue working on his music, when he noticed her still sitting there. With a little smirk, Jackson made his way over and plopped down on the same table as her in the chair facing her. He wordlessly pulled his music out and continued to annotate it, hoping his mere presence would be enough to annoy her.

“Right. You can keep telling yourself that and ignore what’s true.”

Jackson chuckled and shrugged. “Alright, blondie, I don’t really wanna see you bothering me on my shifts anyway, so I’ll be nice to you for once, mmkay? I don’t work on Thursdays to Saturdays.”

“Sure. Maybe I won’t ever see you again. Just our of curiosity, when are your off days, so I know to come here then?”

Jackson smirked. “We both know you’re going to come on the days I don’t list.”

Phoebe pretty much deadpanned. “Did you really just say that? Seriously? That may be one of the lamest lines I’ve ever heard.”

“It’s the truth, blondie,” he said, before shrugging and moving back behind his desk, unaffected. “But it’ll have the desired effect. I guarantee you’re going to come back for more. Why? Because there’s something about me that interests you, and it’s more than just my face.”

She rolled his eyes. “Shouldn’t you be checking other people’s books out ?”

Jackson chuckled and leaned back, biting his lip and openly scanning her up and down. “I’m a little busy with this checkout,” he said.

“I had nothing to do with it. I haven’t backed away because I have no reason to. You are in my personal space but I’m standing my ground. You getting closer does nothing to me.”

“It does nothing to you, huh?” He challenged, licking his lips and moving so hid face was against hers. “You sure?”

The blonde scowled, glaring at him. “You’re also rude. And no, it does not mean you can get away with being a douche. And I’m not being an asshole. I am a customer calling you out on your shit. You’re lucky I’m not asking for a manager or even the owner.”

Jackson shrugged, raising an eyebrow at her. “I am what I am,” he said nonchalantly. “Mmhmm. So you’re saying that my attractiveness has nothing to do with the fact that I’ve steadily been getting closer and closer to you and you haven’t even tried to move away?”

“You called me an asinine conversationalist. Asinine means foolish or stupid.” The blonde pointed out, raising an eyebrow. “Or do you think that word means something else?” She scoffed a little. “I don’t care what you do with it. And me thinking you have a nice face does not mean anything.”

“Well, Blondie, asinine means extremely foolish or stupid. So no, I didn’t call you stupid. I called you extremely stupid.” He smiled pleasantly at her and leaned forward so they were nose-to-nose. “Yet again, you are mistaken. Having a nice face means I can get away with being a douche - just like your cute face is helping you get away with being an asshole right now, too.”

Phoebe shot him a glare. “There you go again, calling me stupid. Which just makes you an even bigger jerk. Actually, I think you’re in more of the douchebag territory.” She rolled her eyes. “What point is there in me giving permission if you;re going to take it out anyways. And no, I don’t think you’re attractive on the inside.”

“When did I call you stupid?” He asked, brows furrowed in confusion. “I think you’re just overly sensitive. And hey - don’t dish it out if you can’t take it back, sweet thing,” he drawled monotonously, rolling his eyes. He shrugged and took another step towards her with raised eyebrows. “Well, for one, if you give me permission, that means you can’t get mad when I take it out.” Jackson tipped his head to the side and leaned in with an amused grin. “But you think I’m attractive on the outside.”

“You are such a jerk!” She huffed, almost turning red in the face. “I have never met someone who is such a huge jerk-especially within 5 minuted of meeting. Not only you are a jerk, but you’re an attractive jerk which makes it even worse!” Phoebe shrugged a little. “I already put it in the box. I’m not going to mess with it and end up breaking it or something. I don’t even know how to open it, you can’t open it from the top. And I could accidentally pull out someone else’s and that almost feels like an invasion of privacy.”

“I’m only a jerk when provoked by an equally asinine conversationalist,” he stated, rolling his eyes. He smirked, feeling just a little big smug at her mentioning that he was attractive. “Same goes to you, blondie,” he smirked, taking a step towards her with his arms folded. “Is that you giving me permission to take it out? Because I have the key to the box. I’m going to take it out of the box either way,” he said, shrugging a little. “But enough of that. Let’s rewind. You think I’m attractive?”

“Older residents. People who have dyslexia so figuring out that machine may be hard for them. People who in general don’t like machines. It’s the same as people not wanting to go to self checkout in the store.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “I saw the self service. Everyone can see it when they walk in. You were too busy focused on something else to actually seem like you cared about a customer. We wouldn’t have gotten in this position if you had scanned my books in the first place, you know your job? And then you proceeded to make an asshole remark, treating me like I’m stupid. Someone who acts like doing their job is a burden and makes a customer feel stupid for no reason should be fired.”

“Well, thanks for speaking out for the masses,” he drawled sarcastically. “If a person preferred not to use it, they would - usually - say ‘no thank you, I would like you to do it for me’. Not everyone sees it.” He gave her a dry look. “Or are you forgetting about blind people and the vision impaired?” He mocked. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed, closing his eyes for a moment before looking back at her with genuine apology written on his face. “Look, I’m sorry for making you feel stupid. That wasn’t my intention - but you’re making this into a way bigger deal than it is.”

Phoebe groaned when he approached- she didn’t even know him and he was annoying her. “I wasn’t referring to myself. And good for you,for actually doing your job.” At his next statement she narrowed her eyes, taking the books from him. “You would think they wouldn’t hire complete assholes here. You don’t seem to do so well with customer service.” She turned around to leave when she spotted it- the comments box. She marched over to it, starting to write before looking at his name tag. “Jackson. Hope you don;t get fired. Or maybe you should.” She shrugged, folding the little paper before dropping it in.

“Then who were you referring to? Most customers prefer the self-service option, especially if they don’t want other people to see what they’re borrowing,” he defended himself. His eyes narrowed and his jaw clenched. “Wait - what - I ---” he broke off, looking at the box before looking back at her. “Hey, wait - so, let me see if I’ve got this straight; you misinterpret my helpful suggestion as a plea for you to go away, I help you despite the fact that you condemned yourself to self service, and you hope I get fired?”

“I’m sorry?” She asked, stepping away a little. “Sorry I almost bothered you from doing something other than your job? I mean, just because there’s self service doesn’t mean you get free time to do whatever you want to do. Not everyone likes self service, some people want human interaction. And those machines can be faulty and confuse people. But fine.” Phoebe turned with a ‘hmf’ and made her way over to the machine- which she had never seen before and didn’t quite know how to work.

Jackson shrugged, not particularly bothered by the (unnecessary) sass, and went back down to annotating the music in front of him. He did feel a little bit guilty - he hadn’t intended to make it sound like he wouldn’t serve her, he just thought she might like to, since he’d noticed a recent trend of people liking the self-service more. He glanced up - not because he wanted to check she was doing fine or anything, psh - and saw he looking confused with the machine. With a sigh, he put his pencil down and moved away from the counter to the machine she was at and pressed the button to start scanning books, taking the books from her and scanning them. “You don’t get much human interaction from a guy at a counter scanning your books and saying ‘have a nice day’,” Jackson said, unable to resist pointing that out to her, “and instead of spinning around for dramatic effect or whatever, you could have just said you would prefer me to do it for you.” He clicked the button to print out the receipt that told her when they were due, and turned to face her. “Is that all, or do you need me to help you work the automatic doors too?”

Jackson looked up from the sheet music he had been annotating as someone approached him at the librarian’s desk. “There’s actually a self-service system to borrow books,” he suggested, pointing at it. “You don’t need to come to me to check out your books.”

“Woah, woah, ‘hit you’? Why would I hit you? Not a problem, bug. Fire away. What’s on your mind?” He smiled pleasantly, assuming that it was some kind of question to do with book returns or some other library-related question considering he was - well - working at the library.
