Hiroshima, a place that whole world will never forget. During world war 2, Hiroshima was a city of Industrial and Military significance. It provided supplies, logistics, communications and production of military parts and machines. Not to mentioned the famous Japanese Battleship “Yamato” was built in Kure port of Hiroshima Prefecture.
5th August 1945, the first atomic bomb was dropped by the United States of America at Hiroshima killing about 146,000 including both civilians and military personals. Some died from the blast while others suffer the after effects of burns, radiation sickness and injuries.
Reaching Hiroshima Airport after checking in, our first stop was the Atomic Bomb Dome. It is one of the “UNESCO World Heritage Sites” in Japan. Walking from our apartment at Funari, it took us about 15mins of journey. We came from direction of Aioi Bridge (相生桥). The bomb ignited above the Dome as a hypercentre and the blast vaporised in the air. The majority of the building was in tact. Although, the locals wanted to demolish it but others wanted to preserve it as a memorial of bombing and symbol of peace. It was preserved on 1966, officially named the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome). The Dome continues to be the park’s primary landmark.
There are many people here. Locals, tourists, tour groups with guides explaining the tour. You can also see photos, banners, folders with articles written and translated in various languages for visitors.
Emotional feelings flows thru my heart and mind. The atmosphere was filled of sympathy for all who had past away during World War 2 as well those who still live with sufferings, tragic memories, sharing the History to the future generations. They named it “Peace Memorial” instead of “War Memorial” to remind the importance of Peace. Personally, I can’t imagine what will happen to Earth given today’s technology which is even more advance if the next World War were to happen. May we all pray to have “PEACE TO THE WORLD“.
