idk man, i know vampires are supposed to be unchanging or whatever, but it seems like such a cop-out for character development. like, here we have Edward who perceives himself as a soulless monster despite his actions. throughout the series, Bella is by his side convincing him he's worthy. but it isn't until Resume is born that he realizes he has a soul. & ok, sure, maybe there's something to the fact that Bella sacrificed her life to give him this proof that he's not damned. but it's just not written in a way that sells that idea. Resume being the reason he's convinced he has a soul feels so empty. this baby plot comes out of fucking left field, she's completely unrelatable as a character, she sucks all the introspection out of the series, and yet... wow, look at that ladies and gentlemen, the man is cured of his monster complex by this thing we're supposed to care about. when it's like. Bella was Right There the whole time. it wasn't her that convinced him, but what she gave him. it just feels like Bella was right all this time: she was never enough.

GOD i'm having so many thoughts about this. absolutely devastating, obviously, that final point about bella not being enough. she canonically marks the value of her presence in her loved ones' lives by what she tangibly gives to them instead of by love and this reinforcing that...

but also. the absolute fucking insidiousness of smeyer's internalized misogyny and patriarchal worldview here? it's every "oh, haha, you'll see when you have a daughter!" aimed at a misogynist, when he has a wife or a girlfriend standing right there. it's the way the love can't be enough--it has to be these societal milestones of marriage and children, and then he has a soul? then he can see himself as a complete person?

and that's why it doesn't matter that ravioli is the most horrifying, inhuman character we meet in the series, that she so casually does harm, that if edward worried he didn't have a soul, meeting this child who complains about not being allowed to bite shouldn't convince him otherwise...because it isn't actually about her. just like how children in america, especially evangelical christian america, are so often born not as people for their parents to love, but as status symbols to confirm that the parents followed the path expected of them to serve their god and save their own souls.

I have not watched this yet, but Alex Bale makes fun theories that aren't supposed to be taken seriously. I think it will be fun as hell (In an interesting way that we talk about the serious but honestly Bella has a lot going on and it's just cool to see other people talk about Twilight outside of the fandom)
