“You still gotta eat, though.” Tyler replied with a small laugh of his own. “I get that. I get caught up with work and forget to eat sometimes too,” he admitted. “I bet it’s awfully busy around the holiday time as well, huh? Everyone wanting Christmas themed drinks and such?”

“I know...please forgive me,” Jade pouted playfully before taking another forkful of the pasta.  “Yeah?  What do you do?” she asked with curious eyes, “For sure, and I have a lot of regulars who like to stick around -- so it’s a multiple drinks kinda deal, and then we got a lot of people who come in from the restaurant next door. But I love it -- I love working here.”

“Nothing’s wrong with it, necessarily, it’s just not the best food to eat.” Ainsley shrugged. “So many things. Pizza, curry, burgers. Need me to go on?”

“You know...I just think you haven’t had the right pasta,” Jade squinted as if she was physically reading between the lines of their words. “There’s a world outside of Chef Boyardee, friend,” she teased.

dax was undoubtedly surprised when she pulled him into a hug. he was almost too surprised to speak but her words triggered some kind of autopilot that brought him back to earth. “don’t mention it,” he shook his head. his eyes looked into hers as she smiled up at him, a goofy grin tilting the corner of his lips upward. what was that? he’d been around enough women to know that look, but nothing about it made sense. he couldn’t figure any reason that she would like him. a smart, cute, sensible girl like her? he attracted drama queens, gold diggers, drug addicts. he attracted people who needed help, mentally or monetarily. she snapped him out of his thoughts again and he nodded, following her inside and sitting with her at her counter. “it’s a really good book. it’s been my favorite since i was a teenager.” he watched her begin to pour the coffee.  what the fuck is a french press? not wanting to seem stupid, he didn’t ask. “oh, it’s nothing, really. just feeling kind of stressed about work, trying to get my character right, y’know …”

she looked at the cover the book then back it dax.  “it suits you -- somehow you don’t strike me as the kid who read harry potter under the covers with a flashlight...like i was,” jade giggled at how far back her bibliophile-tendencies went.  she asked about what was on his mind from earlier -- his doubts about the acting gig he recently acquired -- but she didn’t ask how he wanted his coffee.  jade was incredibly knowledgeable about the flavors and roasts of coffee and exactly how much other ingredients to add to bring out the best tastes.  she made the perfect cup of coffee for both of them.  “here you go,” she hands him a small white mug before inviting him to her couch.  “it’s not nothing...tell me about this character.  why’re you so worried about it?” jade had a strong urge to touch him, comfort him, but she was reluctant.  she always thought she might be a bit too touchy-feely with people who didn’t want to be touched at all.  she just palmed her mug with two hands, taking a careful sip.

dax felt like a bowl of jello as he approached jade’s apartment door, heart hammering in his chest as slightly sweaty palms clutched a beat up copy of the lone ranger and tonto fistfight in heaven. it was his favorite book, and probably the only book that he had with him here in nashville. he knocked, feeling butterflies fill his stomach when she opened the door and he saw her. damn. every time he saw her she found a way to look even more beautiful. it took him a second to speak, his arm jutting out to extend the book to her. “you read,” maldita sea, idiota, “uh-” he laughed at himself. he was never this awkward around women, not even as a teenager. “it’s my favorite book. i brought it in case you wanted to borrow it.” @jadeadlani

jade was in the middle of making a pot of coffee for them with her french press when she heard a knock on her door.  she felt herself smile, knowing that dax was right outside her studio.  she rushed to let him, the tail of her floral kimono fluttering behind her.  “dax,” she announced before bringing him into a hug.  once she pulled back, he extended a book towards her.  “i do read,” she nodded, letting out a little laugh along with him.  she took the novel into her hands -- delicate fingers examining the cover.  “that’s really sweet of you, dax.  thanks...” jade smiled up at him, unknowingly and completely enamored.  “uh, come in -- come on, i made coffee anyway -- french press,” jade ushered him into her house.  “i can’t wait to read this -- just give me two days tops,” she placed the copy on her kitchen counter before pouring the two cups for them.  “you wanted to talk?”

“What?  What’s wrong with pasta?” Jade’s thick brows furrowed at their anti-pasta rhetoric.  “Oh yeah?  Like what, hmm?”

“All day? Girl, you need longer breaks.” Tyler chuckled, shaking his head. “Do you work here?” he asked, assuming so if she hadn’t had a chance to do anything else.

“To be fair...I drank a lot of fluids.  I was well hydrated,” Jade pointed out with a tiny laugh.  “Yea, I do.  And I’m always covering for people....and when I’m busy, I don’t really think about eating.  And I forget to take my break all the time.  Everything moves so quickly in here that I didn’t even notice I haven’t eaten,” she hoped she made sense before stuffing her face some more.

“it was crazy busy today.  we had a bogo thing happening, and it was wild...but it’s winding down now.  most of the action’s happening at the bar,” jade gestured towards the rest of the restaurant.  “i know, i know.  i don’t mean to.  i just get distracted when it gets that busy, you know?  it won’t happen again...hopefully,” she crossed her fingers before leaning in a bit closer to her friend, “so, how was your day?  any fun modeling things you wanna tell me about?”
