Final Reflection

At this beginning of this semester, my objective was to learn more design skills and make more friends for communication Design Studies. I think I achieve the two goals now. 

Through attending the lectures and workshops with different topics every week, I gained new knowledge about art history, accessed to various aspects of design, shared ideas with different people and also applied new skills I learnt from class to finish the assignments, which help me to get more experience for design.

For example, from the project of zine-making (Ask me anything!), I learnt that printing for testing the composition, colours and typefaces is very essential in the design process because the design works on screen and on the paper look totally different. In addition, time management is very important while doing the project, from the interview with the creative to the designing process, everything should be done before the deadline or it could be a mess. 

I also learnt a lot from others in the class that their design works are so creative that always makes me amazed. I really hope I can meet them and share more ideas with each other next semester!

F I N A L   Z I N E

This is the final zine design! I think overall I am quire happy with how it turned out. 

• After speaking to Andy in the early classes about remaining a very minimalistic layout to accompany works, I think it has definitely worked in the favour of the artworks. As I tried playing around with different materials, it was taking a lot of the attention away from the breathtakingly detailed and emotions works of Qing, which I think should definitely be the focal point for each pages. 

• I ended up going with Japanese binding as the other binding despite was strong, did not have a very clean visual which I don’t think went well with the overall layout of my zine. 

• As Qing uses a lot of social media to post her artworks,  I wanted to show that aspect in the zine through showing comments found on her pages and also embedding a QR code to her Youtube account where you will be able to see the amazing process from start to finish. 

• I think one aspect I could definitely improve on is how creative/interactive the design could be. Although I am liking the simple design to go with her artworks, looking back at it I think I could had definitely go out of my comfort zone and try new ways of conveying information. 

• In addition, I think the paper is a bit hard for my liking and you have to physically hold the pages so that it stays open… These are definitely points that I have encountered and will learn from.

Zine Making Review-4

The final physical zine.

I used 3 kinds of baking papers to decorate the zine. They represent the diversity of desserts Lilyan made and her cautious attitude toward her works. In addition, the small see-through window represents the surprises while customers have her cakes for the first time because they are not only good-looking but also very delicious. Furthermore, the typeface reflects Lilyan’s delicate and classic decorative art style for her desserts.

It is the second version of my zine. I think this one is more clear for people to read the texts. As for the images, I put more pictures of the working-process which is according to the contents of the interview. In addition, I used different formats and composition on each page to convey Lilyan’s responds to the questions and also make the zine look more interesting.

Zing Making Review-2

It is the sample of the first version for the zine assignment. I made a see-through window in the middle of the cover and then used a parchment paper which Lilyan used while making cakes to cover it so people could see the cake image on the first page. Also, I tried to make the typography look like symbols of the desserts. However, It was very difficult for people to read so I changed the whole composition and format in the second version.

I interviewed my roommate, Lilyan Chang, who is a Taiwanese pastry chef working in Melbourne now. I translated her responses in Chinese into English version and then decided to put both two languages into the zine because I wanted to show her personality and character by keeping her native language and make more people know her works.

Zine Making

At the workshop, I used Indesign to make a zine. It was my first time to use Adobe Indesign so I found a lot of problems and difficulties while doing this work. I think I need more time to be familiar with the software. 

The creative I interviewed is a pastry chef so I will try to test more different formats, compositions and textures to create the style to match the voice of the artist’s artworks. As a result, I will make another version for the final assignment.

Zine Research 1:

The zine is made of black and white fabrics with fluorescent green embroidery and photo printings, which creates a mysterious vibe for readers. I really like the rough edges and the texture because they can bring the special touching and visual experience for the audience. Using different mediums to make a zine could be a good idea.

A task in the workshop to look for English letters, numbers and punctuation in our lives. It was an interesting process to take pictures of these characters existing at school and finally, I found the stuff with similar shapes of D, W, : and 6.

Typeface: elephant

In the class, We used different shapes (squares and half circles) of papers to form the lowercases. Our group spent the most time trying to find the rule and maintain the balance of these letters. The system of typeface looked very harmonic because every letter had nearly equal shapes and sizes. They also looked eye-catching due to the combination of red and green colours. We named the type style "elephant" according to the shape of the letter "t" because it looked like an abstract-style head of an elephant.

WHAT’S THE CORE OF DESIGN?

I asked the question “WHAT’S THE CORE OF DESIGN?” for the first assignment of communication design studies. I think designers have to find the core of design by deconstructing the problem and defining the goal of the project step by step as chopping fruit into small pieces and then we can see the pit (the core) in the end. By doing so, I believe designers can create quality work with useful functions and fresh visual elements to communicate effectivelly and successfully with their audience.

In the workshop on Friday, We learnt how to use Photoshop to change the quality of photos with adjustment layers of Levels, Curve, Hue/Saturation and Contrasts. I found that we had to prepare different kinds of equipment, set the lighting and background before shooting the objects. Also, we need to put these pictures into Lightroom or Photoshop to adjust them. It’s a long process to get a good picture. I think I need to have more patience to do more practice for using the camera and digital tools.

Our group used yellow tapes to make the Pangram. ( a sentence containing every letter of the alphabet. ) At first, We chose “Intoxicated Queen Elizabeth vows Micky Jag is perfect.” as the pangram to make. However, we found our materials could not be enough to finish the whole sentence so we changed to another one. -> ( “Two driven jocks help fax my big quiz.”) I think it is difficult to use tapes as the medium to make our work because we could not shape them into the letters easily. 

After finishing our Pangram in the classroom, We went outside and used brushes with water to write it on the floor. In the two tasks, our team members spent most of the time sharing opinions with each other and discussed a lot before we started to make these sentences. With the clear and completed plan, we were going well with our works. It is an efficient way to make our good teamwork, but I think we could also have a rough plan at first and then have more details, ideas and communication while working in the process so we could have extra time to try more different ways for our works.
