No point in denying the truth.
I love being horribly straightforward. I love sending reckless text messages (because how reckless can a form of digitized communication be?) and telling people I love them and telling people they are absolutely magical humans and I cannot believe they really exist. I love saying, Kiss me harder, and You’re a good person, and, You brighten my day. I live my life as straight-forward as possible. Because one day, I might get hit by a bus. Maybe it’s weird. Maybe it’s scary. Maybe it seems downright impossible to just be—to just let people know you want them, need them, feel like, in this very moment, you will die if you do not see them, hold them, touch them in some way whether its your feet on their thighs on the couch or your tongue in their mouth or your heart in their hands. But there is nothing more beautiful than being desperate. And there is nothing more risky than pretending not to care. We are young and we are human and we are beautiful and we are not as in control as we think we are. We never know who needs us back. We never know the magic that can arise between ourselves and other humans. We never know when the bus is coming.

In today’s society, we wear invisible masks.
Because over time, we lack the courage to be ourselves. Conformity will be the death of individuality. Take the time to celebrate you, with all your flaws and all your quirks. Because you are special and you deserve to be celebrated.
Skinny jeans: Between freedom and oppression
I was asked about this recently and I thought I’d share.
I have a pair of skinny jeans.
Freedom is when I can choose to wear skinny jeans whenever I like.
Discrimination is when people treat me differently just because I wear skinny jeans.
Peer pressure is when my friends and people around me think I’m a loser and not good enough unless I wear skinny jeans.
Condescension is when people laugh and tell me I look stupid in skinny jeans and I shouldn’t be wearing them.
Hypocrisy is when the same people who laugh at me are wearing skinny jeans.
Oppression is when I am forced to wear skinny jeans all the time, or else I will be fined, punished or sent to jail.
Religious oppression is when religious people in skinny jeans tell me I will go to hell for not wearing skinny jeans and I must be punished for insulting religion.
So skinny jeans can be a sign of personal choice, peer pressure or oppression, depending on why I’m wearing them in the first place. It doesn’t automatically mean I’m being oppressed when I wear skinny jeans because some countries in the world force people to wear skinny jeans, punish them and justify violence against those who don’t.
Sometimes, we just like to wear skinny jeans.
Skinny jeans are not the enemy. Discrimination, peer pressure and oppression are.
Same thing with headscarves worn by Muslim women.
It’s easy to be close, but almost impossible to stay close. Think about friends. Think about hobbies. Even ideas. They’re close to us–sometimes so close we think they are part of us–and then, at some point, they aren’t close anymore. They go away. Only one thing can keep something close over time: holding it there. Grappling with it. Wrestling it to the ground, as Jacob did with the angel, and refusing to let go. What we don’t wrestle we let go of. Love isn’t the absence of struggle. Love is struggle.
