okay so. the rézfaszú bagoly is the male version of another well-known hungarian folklore figure: the evil witch with the iron nose. YEP. rézfaszú bagoly = vasorrú bába but male.

but how? literally none of those words are the same?

well, you see… according to one explanation the vasorrú bába (who sometimes has iron teeth instead of a nose) is ACTUALLY the midwife who used to do abortions. and because that wasn’t Proper and okay to talk about, it’s become this sort of mythological figure, but i mean once you know that it’s kind of obvious. i mean, she takes the children away. that’s her primary attribute.

and according to rural etymologies, a knowledgeable man = an owl (yeah….), and anything a man uses that is inside a woman is a dick (yeah………..), iron becomes copper and voilà: the copper-penis owl.

probably. this is kinda convoluted but sounds likely enough when you think about it. and anyway an interesting hypothesis.

tl;dr children beware the copper-penis owl or he’ll come and abort you
