Putain de merde.
"So, which regiment were you in?" Porco tilts his head, and you feel as if the room has shrunk under the weight of your colleagues' intense stares.
Jean gives you one last look, and you offer him a barely perceptible smile to let him know you trust his answer, whatever he says. "I was in the 104th." He declares solemnly, straightening his shoulders and puffing out his chest, his hands behind his back.
"Wow." Porco's mouth opens wide, astonished or perhaps incredulous that you thought you could fool him so easily. Suddenly, a glimmer of admiration and respect lights up his eyes, and he takes a determined step toward Jean before patting him on the shoulder like a brother.
"Is it over for us?" Jean mouths to you as Porco takes a step back and lets out a small laugh, wiping his face with his palm like he can't believe what Jean just told him.
"You were part of the regiment that almost got sent to the Trost district. They sent the 139th instead; you were blessed." You feel your shoulders relax in relief as he nods respectfully toward Jean.
"The 139th was wiped out there. You were really lucky, weren't you?" A shadow crosses Jean's face at this comment, and you already know he's thinking about the many comrades you lost that day and the gruesomeness of their deaths.
Thankfully, their sacrifices weren't in vain, but you'll never forget what it felt like to burn the bodies of those you grew up withโyour friends who became your family. You'll never forget the torment Jean felt after discovering Marco's mutilated, barely living body.
They say you can't be angry at war because it takes lives, since its very purpose is to see who can eliminate the most people in the shortest amount of time. But you can, and you have the right to, be angry at the heartless, vile beings who took pleasure in torturing innocent people.
Killing a man and subjecting him to horrific torture before taking his life are two different things. In some cases, one can be explained depending on the context, while the other stems from our inherent cruelty. This cruelty consists of the basest and most abominable tendencies of humankind, which manifest themselves when we find ourselves in an environment where we can unleash all our frustrations on others with impunity.
War is evil, war is sickening, war is vicious, but above all, it reveals the true, hidden nature of mankind, all the most abhorrent atrocities of which people are capable, simply because they find themselves on opposing sides.
Thus, for the rest of your days, you will seek vengeance and justice. You will bring peace to your country and eliminate anyone who stands in your way. You will hunt their blood like a shark lurking in murky waters, like a hunting dog chasing a rabbit until it snaps its neck between its sharp teeth.
Nothing will stop you from preventing the atrocities committed in Paradis from happening again. You will never allow another war to erupt, no matter the sacrifices it entails.
You will not give up until your goal is achieved.
"Yes, I was very lucky." Jean replies to Porco, his gaze dark, as if veiled. After all, he was just a child, like all of you, when he had to survive the horrors of war. Children thrown onto a battlefield to fight in wars started by adults.
"Well, Porco, thank you for reminding us of events we would all rather forget. I must show the newcomers around the building, if you don't mind." Pieck breaks the dark, heavy atmosphere that had settled over the room, an atmosphere like dust on a shelf: light on the surface, but heavy, oppressive, and suffocating when it accumulates.
"You'll have all the time in the world to talk to Jean whenever he needs to print articles." Porco nods and takes a step toward the boy, who seems frozen in time, like a picture in a photo book, his eyes trapped in the past, condemned to remain frozen in this state for eternity.
"See you later, Kruger." The blond boy leaves the room, and Jean seems to realize he's not alone when Porco's presence vanishes. He looks up and sees Hitch standing before him, a mischievous smile on his lips.
"I am very pleased to welcome you to our team." She extends her hand with a broad smile, and Jean shakes it, giving her a light, formal squeeze, which she returns with an overly affectionate one.
Jean wipes his hand on his trousers, then turns to Pieck and you after the brunette leaves the room, light on her feet, whistling as she returns to her duties.
"Well, let's begin the tour." Pieck smiles and gestures for you to step outside. You step into the corridor, and Jean tugs at your sleeve to get your attention, placing you a few steps behind Pieck, out of earshot.
He leans down to whisper in your ear, his lips brushing your lobe. "Observe your surroundings with those pretty eyes of yours, owl."
"Of course I will." You quicken your pace to catch up with Pieck and avoid arousing suspicion as she continues showing you around the building's many departments.
You pass by the printing office where Porco works, then the entertainment, sports, and weather departments, and many others. Most of the time, the corridors are lined with numerous rooms that simply serve as offices, either for secretaries or for more important people.
"The last department I'm going to show you is the politics department." Pieck stops in front of a glass door leading to a small space with gray carpeting and partitioned offices, decorated and cluttered with various objects.ย
Upon entering the politics department's office, you see a blond man, hunched over his typewriter, typing frantically while reading scribbles in an old notebook.
"Colt, we have visitors, don't frighten them."Pieck says in a teasing little voice, drawing Colt's attention from behind his desk. He stands up and looks at you and Jean simultaneously before lifting his chin in recognition, his eyebrows raising slightly before returning to their initial position.
"Oh, Jean and Y/N Kruger, the new employees, yes. Pleased to meet you." Colt first shakes Jean's hand and winces slightly when the young man gives him a warm handshake. He then turns to you. You shake his hand formally, then take a step back, preferring to analyze the room in the most important department of the establishment rather than join the conversation.
"I hope one of you will be assigned here. We've been desperately short-staffed since the field reporters left during the war. People are afraid of the dangers in the field." Colt nervously rubs the back of his neck, trying to convince you that his job isn't dangerous. If only he knew all the things you've had to endure in your life, he would freeze like a statue.
"We'll let you get back to work." Pieck says, smiling and waving to the boy before leaving the room and heading for the stairs. She walks a little ahead of you, and you and Jean begin a conversation, half a flight behind her.
"I don't want to go to entertainment." You whisper in his ear and he lets out a little laugh loud enough only for you to hear.
"Why? It's the one where you make the least effort." He asks and you glare at him, wondering if he's genuinely being clueless or just trying to provoke you. Knowing him, chances are it's the latter.
"Well, I don't like that employee. She's totally infatuated with you." You scoff, and he puts his arm around your shoulders as you continue walking slowly down the stairs behind Pieck.
"I understand her. Did you see me?" He moves closer until your faces are practically touching, and you push him away by placing your palm on his chest.
"Yes, I've seen you enough." You roll your eyes.
"Well, my charm is working on her." He smiles.
"Equine charm, I presume?" You let out a mocking laugh as he frowns at your little insult.
"Hey, it's not just horse, it's Stallion." He wrinkles his nose like a child, and you chuckle softly at his disgruntled expression.
Suddenly, you hear Pieck's voice interrupting your conversation, and you rush downstairs to join her.
"So, which department would you like to join?" She smiles, and you repeat the sentences Ackerman advised you to remember by heart in case you were ever asked this question. You can even hear his deadpan voice in your head.
"Entertainment and Politics are the best departments for this assignment, so you'd better pretend to be really passionate about them to get assigned there. Understood, brat?"
"Politics wouldn't bother me. Unlike most people, I wouldn't be afraid to go on the field if it meant serving the nation." Jean puffs out his chest, displaying an exaggerated nationalism for a country he doesn't even belong to.
"Personally, I would prefer working for the entertainment department. In order to stay up-to-date on trends and know which events I could attend." You let out a polite and soft laugh to show your relaxed attitude to Pieck, who tilts her head to look at the ceiling, lost in thought.
"Oh yes, it's one of the most appreciated departments. We welcome many new employees each year. Well, you will have your answers tomorrow." She pushes open the door, and you finally enter the lobby after what feels like an eternity.
"You can bring pencils, notebooks or anything else that might be useful for your work. You begin tomorrow morning at 8:00. Have a good day." You and Jean leave her and head toward the entrance, crossing the gleaming lobby floor and passing past employees rushing to their office before finding yourselves in the bustling streets of Liberio once again.

When night falls, your mind dwells on the events of the day, focusing particularly on the discussion between Jean and Porco.
In your sleep, you are transported to a day that marked your life forever. A day you would do anything to forget, a peaceful afternoon four years earlier.
The day of the battle of Trost District.
"Has it really been five weeks since the last Marleyan attack?" Eren asks you as he looks at the world beyond Trost District, distant grasses swaying in the light afternoon breeze, flower petals drifting into the sky to perfume the air and make the landscape magical.
You are both standing atop the ramparts surrounding the city, these 15-meter-high walls offering an unobstructed view of the verdant lands stretching as far as the eye can see, a landscape untouched by war. Compared to the wasteland that Shiganshina has become, Trost is a small haven of peace where you and your comrades make the most of your days, trying to forget the horrors you witnessed in the past by playing cards and singing together late at night around a campfire.
It has been five weeks since you last heard from the Marleyans and the soldiers have begun to relax, enjoying card games and glasses of whiskey in the evening, convinced that the threat has been eliminated.
You do not share this opinion; you would have been notified if an armistice had been declared. However, no messenger came, no one conveyed any information describing the current situation to you.
The war is not over yet.
Even with your limited experience on the front lines, you know that silence can be deceiving. Silence cannot be trusted, it is synonymous with something greater, the awakening of a sleeping giant, the calm before the storm.
[Play Zombie by The Cranberries]
A storm is coming, a storm that will destroy everything you have built in recent months, ravaging everything in its path and leaving behind only chaos and destruction.
"Look at us, ready to stand tall again. We will end this fight once and for all." Eren puffs out his chest as he cleans the barrels of the cannons placed atop the wall, protecting the city from any enemy threats that dare to approach.
"This nightmare will finally come to an end." Suddenly, you are thrown backward as an explosion roars through the air, the shock wave hitting you with full force and nearly bursting your eardrums.
"Y/N!" Eren shouts as your vision blurs around the edges and you feel yourself falling to the ground. He catches you just before you fall from the rampart, holding your arm tightly.
"What just happened?" You whisper weakly, coughing to clear the dust that burns your throat.
"The enemy is here! They are attacking us!" He pulls you to the other side of the rampart and turns your head toward the outside of the city, watching the large army who is marching straight in your direction.
The Marleyans are far away, but the machines scattered among the legions of soldiers are titans, almost as tall as the wall, rocket launchers as ferocious as a pride of lions.
"They broke the wall! The wall is breached!" You run to look over the edge of the wall, hearing the voices of your comrades on the ground fifteen meters below.
"Our friends...Eren, look." You tug on his sleeve and point down. He follows your line of vision and you feel him tense beside you as he sees the horror resting near the gate.
The gate in the wall is completely destroyed, reduced to dust and obliterated by the brute force of the weapon that struck it. Your comrades who were on guard duty today are crushed beneath the debris of the wall thrown up by the explosion.
Thomas Wagner, a tall, blond boy who was in the cadet corps with you, is crushed under a huge block of concrete. His body is entirely covered in blood, the liquid slowly spreading around him to form a large, dark red pool.
Crushed organs litter the ground around him, pieces of his digestive system scattered as if he were a torn rag doll, unrecognizable fragments of each of his organs lying just a few feet away from his body.
He is still alive, coughing and spitting up blood with every breath. His head bobs painfully with each respiration, his lungs collapsed and destroyed, pierced by the shattered bones of his ribcage.
"Y/N, Y/N!" You snap out of your thoughts as Eren roughly shakes your shoulder, pulling you from your daze and nodding his head at the approaching army.
The horror of Shiganshina is about to be repeated. Trost is teeming with citizens who haven't yet evacuated, believing themselves safe from the war and the merciless generals.
They will all die under the bombs and bullets.
They will all die, and you will be powerless to save them.
Hundreds of soldiers appear from the hills surrounding Trost district. The synchronized rumble of their footsteps shakes the ground and announces the arrival of a giant.
Armed with grenades at their belts and brandishing their rifles, they advance, proud and boisterous, crushing everything in their path.
"I'll kill them all." You grit your teeth and grab the cane you had placed on the ground. Ever since your leg was nearly torn off during the Battle of Shiganshina, you've had to walk with a cane to aid your recovery.
Running is difficult, but you can walk without any problem, even if you limp slightly. The doctor said that, given the extent of the damage, it would take at least two years for a full recovery, and that you would bear the scar for the rest of your life.
You are suddenly pulled back, grabbed by the collar by Eren, who glares at you angrily. "Your leg is too weak; you won't be able to run. You stay here and stand guard!"
"My comrades are dying down there, and the enemy is approaching. They need me!" You shout, push him away, then head for the stairs leading to the base of the rampart to go join your comrades before Eren can stop you.
"Why are you being so stubborn? Do what you want, but you'd better stay back as much as possible." He threatens you before shoving you out of his way so he can go down the stairs.
Your hand trembles as you grip your cane tightly, staring at the soldiers marching toward your city where you forged new memories, ready to trample this land too.
"Shut your mouth, Jaeger." You drop your cane and sit down on the edge of the rampart, between two merlons. You grab the binoculars from the watchtower and the walkie-talkie from the crate that was beside them.
You press on the PTT button and transmit your message. "L/N to ground troops, L/N to ground troops. Enemy approaching between 10 and 2 o'clock, large area covered by numerous heavily armed soldiers. Powerful rocket launchers and new weapons concentrated in the center and at the extremities."
"This is Smith. We've observed extensive damage near the gate and numerous casualties. Remain on duty, soldier." Erwin Smith, your commander and head of all operations for your unit, is speaking to you on the other end of the line.
He is the best leader you've ever known, always ready to sacrifice himself and his troops for the good of the nation, ready to relinquish his humanity to save other human beings.
"Yes, sir." You press the PTT button again and place the device on your lap, taking a deep, shaky breath. Helpless, you can only watch as the enemy troops appear. Your soldiers emerge from the broken gate, cannons in front of them, ready to inflict maximum damage.
The moment the first four soldiers light the fuse, the enemy fire, and you see a massive rocket hurtle straight toward the men.
They vanish in seconds, their bodies turning to dust and spraying the rampart with fresh blood the moment the missile strikes, destroying the cannons and triggering another explosion that shakes the entire wall.
You clutch your binoculars and spit your observations into the walkie-talkie's microphone, your voice growing hoarse with each word.
You watch the soldiers enter the city and head to your watchtower to block access to the stairs. They'll want a strategic entry point to launch their raid smoothly, and you won't allow it as long as you're alive.
You approach the crate filled with explosives and weapons that you and Eren were preparing and take out a grenade, which you normally only use as a last resort.
"Why won't you leave us alone, you filthy dogs? Why do you want to kill innocent people? WHY?!" You yell as you see Marleyan soldiers coming up the stairs, their faces covered in shadows.
"Die, you bastards!" You give them a sinister smile before pulling the pin on the grenade you're holding and throwing it with all your strength toward the base of the wall.
You witness the explosion that occurs as soon as the grenade hits the ground. The dozen enemy soldiers within its blast radius explode simultaneously, their skin melting instantly in the flames before they disintegrate completely before your eyes.ย
Their bodies burn with intense heat as their remains collapse to the ground. Carbonized corpses, reduced to ashes in a second.
This section of the wall is almost completely destroyed, but not enough to collapse. The force of the explosion throws you backward, but you immediately get back on your feet, ready to report enemy movements to your commander.
You glance over the rampart and see that all the Marleyan troops have entered the city; the worst of the battle is about to begin.
"L/N to ground troops, the enemy has entered the city. Should I remain on report duty?" You hold the walkie-talkie tightly in your hand as you feel your blood rush through your veins and arteries while you wait for a response.
"Come to the front line, soldier. We'll try to trap them in the city." You recognize Commander Erwin's voice, even though his words are distorted by static.
"I will join you in a few minutes, Commander." You tuck the walkie-talkie into your pocket and grab your rifle. You head to the other side of the rampart, where the staircase still stands, its steps undamaged compared to its twin, now a pile of rubble.
You limp down the steps, your rifle pointed at the ground like a makeshift cane, and scan your surroundings. On the muddy and bloody ground, you find your comrades, all reduced to smithereens of flesh and bone by the explosions. Fire rages everywhere, flames destroy houses and send thick black smoke billowing into the air.
You enter a narrow alley and freeze, petrified by the sight before you. Mylius, one of your closest friends, a blond boy who trained with you in the cadet corps, is kneeling on the ground, blood pouring from his mouth. He is struggling to breathe, rattles escaping his throat.
"Mylius!" The moment he looks up to see who called him, a Marleyan soldier appears behind him, a machete in his hand.
"No, no, no..." You whisper, running toward him, but the Marleyan soldier has already raised his weapon and, with a swift movement, slits Mylius's throat.
His head lurches and rolls to the ground, his eyes wide open, pupils dilated, as life ebbs away from his eyes while the sky reflects in his pupils. Less than a second later, his body falls to the ground with a thud, blood spurting from his neck as his body convulses, the final moments of his life unfolding before your eyes before he becomes a motionless corpse.
"YOU BASTARD! I'LL KILL YOU!" A cry of rage escapes you as you rush at the Marleyan, rifle raised. Before he can retaliate, you fire twice: one bullet into his chest, the other into his face. His face explodes, leaving a hollow mass of flesh, bone, and blood in its place as you watch the remains fall to the ground, his mandible dropping with the mass of skin, then his body collapsing, forming a fresh pool of blood near Mylius's.
The adrenaline had made you run without thinking, but now your leg is throbbing with excruciating pain, your muscles suddenly contracting as if you're seized by a cramp. You gasp and squeeze your calf to ease the tension. Your leg isn't fully healed yet, but you can't let your comrades die on the battlefield; you've already failed Mylius.
The walls around you are covered in dark red blood stains and mangled flesh. You look away to hold back your tears as you walk toward your friend's headless body.
"What's that smell?" You sniff the air and a terrible, acrid odor hits your nostrils, the smell of something burning. You look up and see smoke rising into the sky, a dark gray, almost black smoke, which does not bode well.
You take off Mylius's vest and cover your comrade's body with it before taking his head and placing it above his neck, where it is supposed to be. How strange it is to hold someone's head; it is much lighter than you expected, but the significant blood loss is surely the reason.
His blood pools on your hands, making them clammy, but you won't wipe it off; this blood is proof that you failed to save a friend.
You limp out of the alley and pass numerous corpses, friends and foes alike, some with broken legs or arms, others completely mutilated, others covered in blood to the point of being unrecognizable.
You take ammunition from your comrades' bags to be well-armed and steal a few knives and other weapons from a Marleyan soldier you find cut in half on the muddy ground, his intestines crushed under his body.
You hear the sounds of your friends fighting in the streets and houses, even though you can't see them, and sometimes you see soldiers riding by on horseback, firing at the enemy.
You rush toward the source of the smoke and see immense flames rising high into the sky, engulfing everything in their path.ย
"They wouldn't dare..." Your eyes widen as you discover the source of the fire: three Eldian soldiers in a car.
They are trapped in the car. You hear their cries, heart-rending screams mixed with fits of coughing, as smoke begins to fill their lungs. Little by little, they shrivel up like withered flowers as the fire chars their skin and muscles, gnawing deep down to the bone in its final assault before it turns them into ashes.
As you stand there, rooted to the spot by this macabre scene, helpless in the face of this desperate situationโthe doors are shut, burning hot, and impossible to touch without risking third-degree burnsโyou hear a cry for help.
A little girl is standing a few feet from the car, her face covered in blood and her skin flaked because of a fire, revealing raw flesh just beneath: she must have been caught in the attack.
Her face, streaked with tears, is expressing excruciating pain; her eyes close for a moment before struggling to stay open and she collapses to the ground, her eyes fluttering shut once more.
You run to her and pull her close, checking her pulse. It is weak, barely perceptible, and you notice the third-degree burns on her back, revealed underneath her torn purple shirt.
"Give her to me, I'm going to the hospital with the second squad." You turn at the familiar voice and see Jean standing before you, blood all over his clothes, dirt and scratches on his face.
"Be careful." You thrust the trembling girl into his equally trembling arms, but he regains his composure, not wanting to frighten her further, determined to reassure her.
You turn around and see a small group of Eldian soldiers heading toward the wall, led by Erwin Smith. They carry enormous objects wrapped in blankets, clutching them tightly as they slap their horses' flanks to urge them into a gallop. Your eyes widen as you realize what they are holding.
Bodies. The bodies of their comrades.
You run after them, slipping and stumbling over corpses, as many comrades as enemies. It's a true carnage: limbs and bodies litter the ground. Organs, disfigured faces, torn clothes... the acrid, metallic smell that permeates the air makes you nauseous.
You dive to the ground when you hear a hoarse voice, hiding yourself behind a body whose ribs protrude from its chest like bloody wings.
A Marleyan soldier staggers into view. A young man with brown hair whom you recognize as an Eldian soldier, is grabbed by the collar of his uniform and dragged along the ground by the Marleyan. You recognize the young man; it is Nack Tierce, a boy who was part of a squad with Eren a few months ago and who had dinner with you and the rest of your friends once.
He looks dead, his head lolling on his neck like a broken doll. "You really thought you could trick me, you filthy Eldian?" The Marleyan hisses through his teeth, his breath coming in gasps from the physical exertion of dragging Nack.
He hurls the soldier's body to the ground, then you see the Marleyan pull out a large, razor-sharp knife. He plunges it into Nack's leg, but Nack doesn't react, confirming once again that he is indeed dead. "You killed my fucking comrades, I'm going to kill you now, you bastard."
He plunges the knife repeatedly, blood gushing from your comrade's femoral artery and spurting down the Marleyan's face like a madman in a slaughterhouse.
You freeze, afraid of meeting the same fate as Nack if the soldier sees you, and remain hidden, listening to the sound of flesh being stabbed repeatedly.
You glance over and see that the Marleyan soldier has seized Nack's leg and bent it like a twig, severing it from his upper body. He then attacks his arms, his torso, his head, hatred blinding his better judgment as he unleashes his fury on the poor corpse.
You feel vomit rising in your throat, but you hold your mouth shut with your hand, tears of terror and fear welling up in your eyes as you watch your comrade being treated like a rag doll.
The thirst for revenge drives humans to commit terrible, unspeakable acts. During war, this hatred swells within each of these men with explosive tempers until their bodies can no longer contain it, and their rage becomes a volcano, their actions like molten lava destroying everything in their path.
You sit in silence, struggling to breathe, your hand over your mouth, tears streaming down your cheeks as a plethora of emotions overwhelms you simultaneously. After a few minutes, the man finally leaves, judging Nack's body sufficiently mutilated to have satisfied his thirst for revenge.
You stagger slightly as you stand up, your head dizzy from the terror you felt during the minutes you spent hidden behind a corpse. You place your palms on your knees and empty the contents of your stomach onto someone's mangled leg, your stomach acid rising and burning your throat painfully as the meager rations of food you ate earlier are expelled from your body.
You wipe your mouth with the back of your hand and continue walking to find the Commander. Stepping over bodies, you pray that your friends are safe, avoiding lingering on faces that seem familiar to not shatter into pieces.ย
You see civilians crushed beneath the rubble of their homesโmothers, children, babiesโbut you can do nothing for them, too weak to lift the debris. You can only stare into space, walking with a pitiful gait toward your troops.
You turn a corner and discover another scene of carnage: several of your comrades are lying on the ground, their bloodied bodies pale as bedsheets. At the end of the street, lying on the ground with his head against the wall, is Marco Bodt, your friend.
"Marco!" You run to him, ignoring the pain in your leg, and kneel beside him. His right eye is covered in blood, revealing nothing of what lies beneathโif, hopefully, his eye is still intact in its socket and not sitting in pieces of bloody flesh.
His entire right side is covered in blood, scratches, and open wounds that threaten to become infected. Marco is unconscious, his good eye closed, his chest rising and falling weakly.
"Marco... Please, don't die." You plead, tearing a piece of your uniform and rubbing it against his face, around his bloodied eye. You're relieved to see that his eye socket isn't badly damaged, but a deep scar runs across the right side of his face, from his eyebrow to his cheekbone, leaving a trail of blood that cuts right through his iris and pupil.
You dab his wounded side, clearly slashed with a knife, but blood pools with each squeeze, and you have to stop the bleeding. His body is half-burned, as if someone had deliberately set him ablaze. His skin is charred in places, peeling away to reveal bubbling blisters.
"M-Marco..." You sob, a tear rolling down your cheek and falling onto his dirty face, covered in blood and dust. Suddenly, you hear heavy footsteps coming from an alley near you and you pull out your knife, ready to attack whoever seems like a threat.
"Y/N?" Jean appears before you, his uniform stained with dried and fresh blood, the sleeves torn. His hair is matted and disheveled as if he'd just walked through a barbed wire field, and his cheek is scraped. He's out of breath, his pupils dilated, his eyes bulging.ย
"It's Marco..." Jean rushes toward the boy, taking his fragile head in his calloused hands and trying to wake him by shaking him gently.
"Marco, it's me. Wake up, we're almost done, we're going to win." He murmurs, his voice breaking with sobs that make his shoulders tremble.
"Y/N, go ahead. I'll take care of him." Jean whispers to you, his voice barely audible, wiping a trail of blood from Marco's wounded face.
"N-no, we have to stay here. I have to help him too." You cry, tears blurring your vision as you stare at your friend's barely alive body.ย
"I SAID GO, Y/N! WHY WON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME?!" Jean suddenly cries, tears streaming down his face like a raging torrent, falling onto Marco's uniform.
"I'll leave you alone." You sniffle and limp away, leaving the alley to pursue your first objective: finding Erwin Smith. Just as you walk out of sight, you hear Jean let out a guttural scream that could split the earth in two, a scream so hoarse and heartbreaking that the sky itself might weep, bleed, and share his painโa pain unbearable for a single human being.ย
You take cover behind destroyed cars and rubble and reach the destroyed section of the wall. There you find Eren, Levi, and Erwin, surrounded by a pile of corpses.
"Y/N!" Eren exclaims when he sees you. He takes you in his arms and hugs you tightly as you cry on his shoulder.ย
"What's going on here?" You look at the small pile of bodies. Some faces are familiar, others are too disfigured to be identified. A heavy silence falls, and you notice the torch Levi is holding.
"We'll burn the bodies to create a fire powerful enough to seal off this entire area. The enemy will be trapped, and we'll kill them one by one until the city is free." Erwin declares, his voice devoid of emotion, solemnly staring at the corpses of your comrades as you felt your stomach clench at the thought of burning them.
"We have no choice, Y/N." Eren places his hand on your shoulder, and you collapse to the ground, overwhelmed by the horrors you had witnessed today. Levi brings the torch close to the body of someone you would surely have recognized if their face hadn't been so mutilated, their blank stare fixed on the sky.
The fire spreads in seconds, consuming skin, clothing, and blood in a hellish show. You watch helplessly as your comrades' bodies decompose, their skin turning a vibrant red while their muscles and fat melt away, their bodies curling up like fetuses.
Thick black smoke billows out in swirls, and a nauseating stench fills the air, sending a fresh wave of nausea through you. The smell of burning flesh assaults your nostrils, and you take a step back, but your eyes remain fixed on your fallen comrades, a final, heartfelt tribute.
A hand slips out of the pile and you watch its flesh melt before your eyes. When the bone appears, you can no longer hold back and dig your hands onto the blood-soaked floor, your body shaken by violent coughing fits as bile rises in your throat once again.
You sit up in bed, sweating, breathless, frantically searching for flames or bodies nearby. Your hands grip the sheets so tightly you fear they will tear.
Jean wakes with a start beside you, looking at you with confusion, before slowly sitting up, rubbing at his sleepy eyes. "Hey, are you okay? What happened?"
"Trost. I-I was there... in my dream." You stammer, panting, searching for words, struggling to form a sentence as the blood and corpses flood back into your memory.ย
"Hey, we're not in Trost. We're in our apartment, don't worry." Jean places his hand carefully on your back, keeping his body a safe distance from yours, in case you want to be alone.
"I-I saw Thomas, Mylius and... Nack and all the others. I didn't save them, I didn't do anything for them." You tremble, your body is out of control, cold sweat trickles down your back, and goosebumps rise all over your skin.
Jean suddenly pulls you tightly into a hug. His strong arms envelop you like a soft blanket. "There was nothing you could do, you didn't choose to do nothing. It wasn't your fault."ย
"I didn't try. Maybe they would have survived if I had been braver." A tear rolls down your cheek and falls onto Jean's arm. He holds you tighter, pressing your forehead against his chest while gently stroking your back.
"Why me? Why aren't they here?" You whisper to yourself, causing Jean to take you by the shoulders and pull you away so he can look you in the face.ย
"What are youโ"
"They could have survived, couldn't they? They weren't hurt, they were alive and strong, but I was a burden to everyone with my leg." Tears stream down your cheeks as you glance at your leg under the covers, thinking about the scar across it.
"I should have died instead. They were useful." You push back the covers and pull up your pajama bottoms, revealing the reddish, jagged scar that runs along your shin. The hollow, curved muscle around it is evidence of the operation you underwent to save your leg.
Jean looks at you in disbelief and caresses your scar, gently running his fingers over the skin. "You weren't useless. This scar says nothing about your worth. Everyone gets hurt, but the strongest are those who keep fighting even when injured. That's what you did, that's what you've always done."
"You weren't supposed to die there. Look at you now, you're saving our island. We would be doomed if you had died in Trost." Silent sobs shake you at his reassuring words, and you hold him tight, afraid he might leave and disappear, but you know he won't.
"You can't change the past; some things happen for a reason. You just don't know it yet." He runs his hands along your back and rests his chin on top of your head.
"You are the most precious person in my life. Don't think your life is worthless because next to you, even the moon and stars seem dim." You freeze, eyes wide, stunned by his declaration. Your heart slows, your body relaxes, and the trembling finally stops
Jean has always been there for you.ย
"The war won't happen again." You repeat to yourself, snuggling against his chest for comfort as his fingers gently stroke your hair, his touch soothing you and chasing the nightmare from your mind.
No matter how many times you repeat that war is over, you still fear that it will break out again, that you will face more horrific deaths, and that you will see your comrades die before your eyes. You fight every day to preserve peace in your country, and yet, this fear remains deep within you.ย
But with Jean by your side, you fear nothing. He dispels your anxieties and reassures you with his words alone; like a ship on a calm blue sea, he is a symbol of peace and serenity.
You smile as soft tears of relief roll down your cheeks. You wet his shirt, but he remains still, letting you release the excess feelings that were tormenting you until you are too tired to do anything but breathe, sleep gently enveloping you in the safety of his arms as you close your eyes.

At precisely 8:00 a.m., you are already outside Theo Magath's office, waiting for his signal to enter.
"You may come in." His deep, resonant voice echoes from the other side of the door, and you and Jean enter his office. He greets you with a nod and turns toward a small stack of papers on his deskโtwo stacks, one for each of you.
"Jean Kruger, you've been assigned to the politics department." You smile as you see the satisfaction shining in Jean's eyes as his shoulders slump with relief. With this privileged access to the politics of Marley, you'll be privy to real-time updates on what's happening in the country.
"And you, Y/N Kruger, you've been assigned to entertainment." A crisped, forced smile spreads across your face while you clench your fists at the thought of being under Hitch Dreyse's command.
"You two will be interns for two months. At the end of that period, we'll see if you have the necessary skills to choose your preferred department." Magath grumbles from behind his desk, his hands clasped together, his chin resting on them, staring at you like a hawk.
"Now get to work. From 8 to 5. Lunch break from noon to 1." With a wave of his hand, he dismisses you, but Jean raises his hand slightly, signaling that he has a question.
"Yes?" Magath turns to him, his gaze icy, acting like the commander he once was.
"Will we be paid during this internship?" Jean asks, arms crossed, while the boss stares at him like he's a beetle he wants to crush with his fist.
"Yes, but only a quarter of the salary." You frown, annoyed by these ridiculous words and the paltry wage, but given the fact that your entire mission depends on this job, you are not going to argue with him.
Maybe one day you'll be entitled to a better salary and won't be treated like a mere machine, toiling away for its own pleasure rather than to earn a living.
On Paradis, salaries increase year after year, but it seems that in Liberio, inequality is still rampant. With these meager wages, employees simply can't provide for their families or even themselves.
You leave Magath's office, calmly closing the door behind you. "Ah, at least we have standard hours. Even a nice little lunch break, too." Jean tries to cheer you up as you grumble, disgusted by the miserable salary you're about to receive.
"How does he expect to recruit if the employees are underpaid like that? It's pure and simple exploitation!" You seethe, your fists clenched, as Jean tries to calm you down.
"That fossil is lucky we have an agency budget, because the ridiculous salary he pays us doesn't even cover our rent here." You turn and glare at Magath's office door before giving him the finger.
"Considering how women are paid even less, he should be ashamed of cutting interns' salaries so much. I'd like to see him work for me, for free." Jean places his large hand over yours to cover your middle finger and pulls your arm back down to your side before Magath can decide to open the door and find you making rude gestures in front of him.
You know he won't open this door; this man stays in his office all day like it is his own fortress.
"Y/N, calm down, please. There is nothing we can do for now, okay? I will share my money with you, of course, so we can have the same salary. Is that alright with you?" He looks you straight in the eye and you reluctantly nod.
"You don't have to do all this." You glance down the corridor and see that it's empty. But suddenly, you hear footsteps and see two of your colleagues turning the corner and entering the corridor where you and Jean are standing.
You place your palms on Jean's chest, rising onto your tiptoes and lightly kissing his cheekโa gesture of affection intended to ward off gossip from your colleagues about any potential arguments between you two.
Jean smiles and kisses you on the forehead as the two women walk by, squealing like teenagers, no doubt already on their way to tell their friends in the other departments what they just saw.
"I hope I will be able to see you during break. Work well, no arguments, and have fun." Jean turns and blows you a kiss before heading toward the politics department where he will be working for the time being.
You sigh deeply and head to the entertainment department, repeating the same sentence to yourself like a mantra to stay calm and avoid getting into any argument with Hitch while you will be working.
You won't see her forever; it's only for a few weeks.
Jean pov
"Calm down, it was only for the mission." Jean covers his mouth with his hand, trying to hide the blush rising to his cheeks.
He hadn't expected to act like a teenager whose crush had just confessed their feelings, but here he was, at his age, smiling foolishly over a simple kiss on the cheek.
He reaches his department in a few strides, anxious not to be caught blushing, and his shoulder hits the doorframe with a dull thud. He masks the impact with a small grimace before heading to his desk.
"Good morning." He nods quickly at Colt and stares at the white wall of his cubicle, lost in thought.
Grant me the wisdom not to act like an idiot.
You were both Jean's curse and his antidote. Without you, he would already be dead, having thrown himself into the heart of the battle four years ago in Trost district, believing Marco to be dead.
But because of you, Jean also suffers from constant headaches, the result of his unspoken feelings growing within him like weeds in a neglected garden.
He has been in love with you for years; for as long as he can remember, his heart always races a little in your presence.
Sometimes, his feelings overwhelm him, and he drowns them out by acting in a seductive and charming manner, knowing that by constantly playing the seduction card, you'll eventually believe he doesn't mean a word he says and that this behaviour is simply part of his personality.
But you had no idea he truly meant everything he said. Every. Single. Word.
He doesn't know if he'll ever find the courage to talk to you seriously, without being afraid to reveal his feelings. And even if he did, he would probably bury himself alive afterward.
His love is like a noose around his heart; some days it is loose and allows him to breathe properly, but other times it condemns him to agony, tightening the rope around the muscle that keeps him alive, threatening him to confess his feelings or else his heart will stop beating as punishment for being a coward.
But Jean is a scared man. If he ever confesses his feelings to you, what will he do if you don't reciprocate them?
Being rejected is one thing, losing your best friend is another. If he took the risk of declaring his feelings and they weren't mutual, the situation would inevitably become tense between you and him. And Jean could never afford to lose this friendship.
But Jean would rather live with a rope around his heart than risk losing you by changing the status quo. He is happy living with a secret that weighs on his heart heavier than a ton of metal, but as long as you're by his side, he'd gladly carry the weight of the world on his shoulders, as long as you don't leave.
A light tap on the shoulder pulls him from his thoughts, and he looks up to see Colt standing by his desk, a small, shy smile on the boy's lips.
"I'll explain the basics." He says to Jean, pointing to a stack of papers placed on a desk a few meters from him.
"Oh uh yeah, sure." Jean stands up, hitting his knee just under his desk and biting back a cry of pain as he follows Colt over to the papers neatly placed on the wooden surface.
"For now, our department is focused on the new projects of the mayor and the political parties of Liberio." Colt taps the pile of papers and drafts like a proud father.
"Here are all the exclusives our colleagues obtained. I need you to collect them all and write an article about what they contain. Three pages maximum." Jean glances at the blond man, tilting his head as he searches for what he's going to do while Jean will be writing his article.
"Do you not go on the field?" Colt frowns at this question and rubs the back of his neck as he looks at his desk where many papers containing various reports are scattered across the surface.
"Yes, it is just that I got assigned to the office for today." He pats Jean on the back and turns around but the latter's voice stops him in his tracks.
"What was the best trip you took in your entire journalism career?" He looks up as Colt stares at the ceiling while scratching his chin.
"I would say it was when I went to the countryside to report the hiding place of a war criminal." Jean's eyes widen at this statement and the blond boy notices the shocked look in his light brown eyes.
"Impressive, yeah I know." He proudly crosses his arms across his chest, a smug smile playing on his lips before nudging Jean in the ribs with his elbow.
"I won't waste your time anymore, enjoy your work." He returns to his desk and gets lost in the piles of papers, typing quickly on his typewriter as he begins to write his own article.
Jean lowers his headโdamn, he is already on the verge of exhaustionโwipes his face with his hands before straightening up in his chair and turning to the reports piling up on his desk. He sets up his typewriter and begins to write, slowly but surely so as not to waste too much ink.
While he's working, only one thingโor rather, one personโlingers in his mind. Subconsciously, he scans the room for you, searching for your warm eyes, your laughter, your witty remarks, but then he suddenly realizes you're on the other side of the building, probably having a fight with Hitch.
I wonder if Y/N killed her already.
Y/N pov
You push open the glass door of the entertainment department and a chill runs down your spine, as if you've just plunged into a bucket of ice water, the moment you step onto the burgundy carpet.
The reason for this icy chill? None other than Hitch, who's staring at you from across the room, like an ostrich wondering if you're getting too close to its eggs.
Just as you are about to make a witty remark, her demeanour shifts completely, and she breaks into a bright smile, her cheekbones jutting out from smiling so much.
"Hello Y/N! I'm going to show you how things work in this office today." She gestures for you to follow her, and you observe the few other employees standing behind their desks, their noses buried in stacks of papers or engrossed in typing notes. The clicking of their fingers on their typewriters echoes through the room.
It's so noisy in here.
"Here, we stay in the office most of the time and write our articles. Every now and then, news comes to us or we get a call. The only thing we have to do is shut up and do as we are told." Hitch beams as she walks around the room and you roll your eyes at her condescending behavior.
"In other words, shut your mouth and be a dog?" You smile at her startled expression at your sudden vulgarity and she gives you a smile so cold it could make the temperature drop below zero.
"Good, you know what to do then. Here are the latest reports." She picks up a huge stack of papers and throws it into your hands, causing you to almost fall to the ground under the weight of the entire pile.
"I need you to sort them from oldest to newest. All these articles will then go into the archives."She waves her hand and skips over to her desk, happy to have left you with the excruciating task of sorting through papers as if you were her secretary.
"Is this a real job here or are you using me?" You call and she turns around, her face frozen in that same terrifying smile.
"We don't have any exclusivity today, we still need you to work. It will be good for your dexterity." You clutch the papers in your hand at her childish retorts and smile.
"You should work on yours too, your mascara is smudged." She lets out a cry of indignation before taking a step toward you, tilting her head to the side as if what she is about to say will ruin you.
"Your husband has been sent into politics." She emphasizes on the first word, as if you were supposed to be affected by the department he got assigned to when you know Jean is probably having the time of his life talking to everyone in the office like the magpie he is.
"Is there a problem with him being in politics?" You keep your voice calm and steady, not showing the slightest hint of emotion even as your heart races, wondering what could have happened to have Hitch talking about politics in such a worrying way.
"Aren't you afraid for him?" The light brown haired girl asks, feigning a hint of worry in her eyes as you clench your jaw in irritation at her pathetic attempts to scare you.
"Why would I?" You raise your chin and she scoffs before stopping right in front of you to whisper in your ear in a voice meant only for you to hear.
"They go on the field a lot, he risks being injured or worse." She pulls back and gives you a viperous smile, her expression resembling the reptile so much you check to see if her pupils have turned into slits.
If she wants you to show her words affect you greatly, then you will give her the exact opposite.
"Oh really, will he now?" You smile at her innocently and watch her confident facade shatter at your lack of concern for your husband.
"Yes, if I were you I would be worried."
"Thank you for thinking you know my husband better than I do, but I think he will be fine."
"Aren't you afraid for him? Not even a little?" Hitch presses even more and you clench your jaw, your patience disintegrating completely and you give one last blow to end this conversation once and for all.
"I just know my husband isn't stupid enough to run into a minefield." You smile at her, baring your teeth as she purses her lips and returns to her desk, letting out a haughty laugh before starting to type violently on her typewriter.

Minutes feel like hours, like you are imprisoned in an hourglass where the sand is stuck in the middle, taking its time tumbling down to the bottom.
You were looking for a way to efficiently sort documents starting with dates and months, but some papers were so old that the ink had faded and you had to read their articles completely to find out their age.
Your back started to hurt after a few hours, causing you to slouch on your desk as you checked paper after paper, the boredom almost putting you to sleep better than a lullaby.
In all your years as a spy, you have never been so glad that this office job you are doing is temporary. You can't imagine how depressed you would be if you chose a life like this one, working in silence for hours with only the sound of scribbling and typewriters as sole company.
"Ugh, my neck." Hitch groans from the other side of the room and stands up, walking away in the direction of the hallway to probably get a cup of coffee and pass by the politics department by pure coincidence.
You scoff as you watch her walk out of the room and turn back to the dozens of papers that still need to be sorted.
"If only they were interesting." You murmur as you read about the announcement of a new film and a high-class gala at City Hall from eight years ago, just a month before the war began.
Your other colleagues left scattered throughout the day, and Hitch had to explain that they can leave earlier as they gain seniority. But most importantly, the schedule at The Liberio Gazette is made in such a way that a few days a week, half of the employees can work from home and go on the field if they get a call and the rest work in the office and vice versa.
But as a newcomer, you are forced to work when asked and your schedule remains a complete surprise.
At least it adds some dynamism to this boring place.
So you find yourself alone in the office, leafing through the endless pile of papers as you feel your eyes slowly closing only to open once again to fight against the drowsiness caused by the many hours of repetitive work.
"Boring, boring." You don't even bother to read the newspaper because it always contains the same thing: theater, events for the rich, films or plays.
"Borโ" Your eyes widen and you sit up straight as you read the title of the article from three months ago that is in your hands.
"This isn't entertainment." You stare at the article and realize that it can only come from the Department of Crime and Justice, which means someone made a mistake and put it in the wrong pile.
"Tragedy at the grand Theater." You begin to read, your eyebrows pulling close together as your eyes latch on a few words in the text that catch your attention.
"On the peaceful night of July 25, 1947, on the first balcony of our beloved Grand Theaterโdo they worship this building?โour esteemed police captain was brutally murdered." Your blood stops flowing in your veins and arteries at the end of this sentence, your entire body freezing while your mind is spinning as a thousand theories race through your head, wondering who could have committed such a crime.
"While attending a play with his wife and two children, a masked man appeared behind him and stabbed him twice in the neck, severing his jugular vein and carotid arteryโoh this must have been a bloodbath." You wince at a mental image of the police captain's wife covered in blood and their two children looking at their father in horror. Your mind can't help but wander back to what Eren would say while reading this article, knowing how much he appreciates the work of an assassin and the knowledge that comes with it.
"Slicing the main arteries is just stupid, you only do that if you have no choice. Other than that, everyone knows that blood spurts everywhere and you can get caught in two seconds because it splashes all over your body like you're in a slaughterhouse."
"It's best to stab in the lower abdomen or center of the chest to reach a vital area, with a fair chance it will pierce a lung or even go straight through the heart."
"So it was not the work of an assassin, but of someone seeking revenge." Just from the first details, you could tell that the killer is just an amateur. Assassins never wear masks, they use their own appearance as a disguise because their work is so clean and they kill without being noticed.
The person who killed the police captain was reckless, someone motivated by revenge and who had not thought hard enough to learn human anatomy before committing his crime, otherwise he would have known that severing a major artery would result in large amounts of blood loss.
Quite the opposite of a quick and discreet death.
You bring your attention back to the paper in your hands and continue your reading, remembering every single information you are going to tell Jean when you will see him at the end of the day.
"The blows were fatalโobviouslyโand the man succumbed to his injuries within seconds, bleeding to death before the terrified eyes of his familyโthose poor kids are going to be scarred for life." You feel a pang of empathy for his children who are probably very young and how much this death will affect their lives. This is what happens every day, people become angry and families end up as collateral damage, without anyone caring about the repercussions of their heinous acts and how they ruin lives.
"A potential suspect, known to the police, may be involved in this case..." Your eyes stop on the name that follows this sentence.
Marcel Galliard.
Your gaze slides to the black and white image located on the right of the page, just above the article. A sullen-faced, tight-featured young man, eyes shadowed by his eyebrows turned in suppressed anger, but there's no denying from the way his jaw is clenched and his mouth is downturned that he is seething with rage in the photo.
"...a notorious drug trafficker who made the streets of Liberio his playground." You almost drop the newspaper when it mentions Marcel's profession. A drug dealer is a jackpot for this mission, he is the type of person who knows everything about the city and its inhabitants, staying in the corners and in the shadows, listening to everything that is said and watching everything that is done.
"Having been arrested and imprisoned for six months, two years ago, Galliard may have harbored a personal grudge against our highly respected police captain." You feel like your dreams are falling apart when you read this section of the article. If Galliard is currently behind bars and rotting in a cell, it will be much more difficult to contact him.
"He is known for recruiting people living in poverty, manipulating them until they are completely under his control, ready to follow him blindly and obey his every command." You tighten your hands around the paper, crumpling it slightly in your grip.
"What a bastard." You know most organizations do this, they all do it, especially after the war. Hiring people in the most precarious situations and using their desperation to do their job, using them only as pawns and finding other people when they are no longer needed.
"The suspect has not yet been apprehended, but the police are doing everything in their power to solve this crime, which has deeply shaken our community. I dare say the contrary." If this police captain has been brutally murdered, he might not have been really appreciated in the community.
"Where the hell are you, Marcel Galliard?" You whisper. You look at the scowling face of the man in the paper, wondering if he has been arrested or if he is still at large.
"Don't worry, because wherever you are, Jean and I will find you." You mutter to yourself and look around to see if Hitch or anyone else is in the room, then fold the paper into quarters and slip it into the hidden inside pocket of your skirt.
You flatten it to give the impression that there is nothing under your skirt and at the same time you hear Hitch's footsteps coming back. A second later, the girl appears in the doorway, a steaming cup of coffee in her hand.
"Have you made progress with your work?" She asks while she watches you continue to pile the papers on top of each other, giving her an annoyed look in response.
"Yes." You smile and turn your attention back to the newspaper articles but she apparently hasn't finished talking to you.
"If you don't finish today, you can always continue tomorrow." She smiles, looking at the pile in front of you with a gloating look, clearly happy to see you struggling.
"Don't worry, I will." You look at the clock on the wall, just above the window, its hands ticking as the seconds tick by at an unusually slow speed. Your first day at the Liberio Gazette ends in an hour, and you've been so busy looking for any other article that might not be entertainment-related that you forgot to take your lunch break.
No problem, you can starve for days if necessary.
You ignore Hitch and turn to your papers, the weight of the one that is folded and hidden beneath your clothes weighing on you as you think about the hopes it represents.
You've finally found a potential lead, hoping that it won't take you down a dead end and force you to backtrack, shaving off precious hours of work as you race against time.
You continue reading the articles, the seconds blurring in your mind until the world around you is nothing but a cacophony of distorted sounds. Your eyes are fixed on the articles and the rustle of paper as you place them on their designated pile.ย
Hitch stretches in her seat, letting out a loud, deliberate yawn, her arms raised as if she worked all day. Finally, she sits up, her face light and at peace with relaxation.
"Ah, it was a long day." She stands up and heads for the door before turning to you.
"You can go home, you know? The day is over already. There's no point in pretending to be a diligent employee; everyone can see you're putting on an act." Her condescending tone almost makes you crumple a piece of paper in your hands. How audacious of her to think that this stupid office job could possibly interest you in the slightest. You are not here to impress anyone.
"I'm absolutely not trying to copy you, don't worry, you can keep this role." You smile and gather the papers from your desk, ready to take them home to finish sorting them and, with a bit of luck, find some more important articles.
Hitch seethes with rage, and you hear her knuckles tighten on the handle of her porcelain coffee mug as you brush past her before heading down the corridor toward the elevator.
In the elevator, you stare at the ceiling, a thousand thoughts and theories racing through your mind as you feel the weight of the article in your pocket.
Understanding the internal tensions of the Marleyan society could prove invaluable, and even the history of drug trafficking might help you identify other branches of the trade, particularly arms trafficking.
You will need to find this Marcel Galliard quickly, whether he's in prison or freeโhopefully the latter. You must speak with him and obtain information about Liberio's smuggling network.
The elevator doors open with a soft "ding," and you step into the lobby, heading toward the fountain by the bay windows to wait for Jean.
You tap your foot nervously, staring at the stack of papers in your hands; each one might potentially be holding a new lead in your investigation.
"Hey, you were actually waiting for me." A large hand taps you on the top of your head, and you look up to see Jean smiling at you, the setting sun piercing through the clouds and illuminating his face, forcing you to squint to protect your eyes.
"We have to get out of here, hurry up." You head toward the revolving doors, closely followed by Jean, who looks a little puzzled, worried by your strange behaviour.
You glance to your right and immediately turn onto the usual path you take to go home, eager to tell Jean about your discovery.
"What's the rush, mon amour?" He catches up with you and gives you a shy smile when you turn to him before looking straight ahead once again.
"Nothing strange, just some papers that confused me. I see things more clearly now." He pauses to consider your words, trying to say as much as possible without attracting the attention of passersby if he mentions anything that might be considered a taboo.
He leans down to your ear, his soft lips brushing against your lobe as you walk. "You're the best." He straightens up and gives you a warm smile before slipping his hands into his pockets, whistling happily as you head home.
You arrive at your apartment after a few minutes of walk and lock the door behind you before heading into the small living room, where you place the stack of papers you brought with you on the coffee table.
"I think I've found something that might help us." You tell Jean, who is sprawled on the sofa, his hands patting his thighs absent-mindedly while his eyes are fixed on you and the articles.
"Really? What exactly did you find?" You smile and pull the crumpled sheet of paper from your pocket, unfold it, and lay it flat on the table. You smile again as he reaches for the article, waiting for him to read it.
He gives you a puzzled look before beginning to read in a low voice; occasionally you hear snippets of the text when he speaks a little louder to indicate which paragraph he has reached. "Theater... jugular... suspect... apprehended..."
When Jean finishes reading, he looks up at you, his brows furrowed. "This is amateurish work."
"I thought the same thing. What if it was someone seeking revenge? It cannot be an assassin, otherwise they are truly incompetent." You wonder aloud, arms crossed, pacing the room.
"The crime rate in Marley is among the lowest, but judging by this article, I suppose it's because the police are a little too efficient. Almost everyone hates them, you know, the number of people they've been able to arrest is staggering." Jean sighs and rests his elbows on the back of the sofa, watching you pace back and forth. You bite your nails, lost in thought.ย
"This could be useful. We need to explore this lead for now, while we wait for something else." You nod and go sit next to him on the sofa before getting up suddenly and heading back to your room without a single word.
"Y/N?" The boy calls, but you ignore him and open your drawers, searching for the object you have in mind: a map.
More specifically, a map of Liberio.
You also pick up a box of pins from your bedside table, then return to the living room where you find Jean sitting with his eyes closed.ย
"Wake up, I have an idea." You tap him on the back of the head and he yawns loudly before sitting up.
"What's this for?" He nods toward the rolled-up map and the pins you're holding. You gesture for him to wait before heading to the wall opposite the sofa, unrolling the map, and placing a pin in each corner.
"We need to find places in Liberio where we could talk to people and obtain information safely. Any ideas?" You take a marker from the porcelain jar next to the kitchen and remove its cap. You stare at the numerous locations on the map while Jean, his head thrown back, stares at the ceiling.
"It would mostly be places of debauchery: casinos, nightclubs, bars, cabarets, maybe galas. But that one is risky, because only the rich go to galas and they never stop gossiping. Our names would be known everywhere on Liberio in less than a night." He hums softly as you consult the map, searching for the places he mentioned.ย
"There's the Founding Inn, the Rumble Casino, the Grand Theater, and..." You circle each place as you spot them on the map, your eyes swiping from left to right to locate them one by one.
"Centurion Cabaret." You circle the place twice with a dark red marker: the temple of entertainment, debauchery, and encounters, a place renowned for its luxurious decor, extravagant dancers, refined cuisine, and all-night shows. In other words, the perfect place to gather information.
"Shall we go tonight? The sooner the better, right?" Jean suggests. You turn to him, tilting your head while a teasing smile plays on your lips.
"You seem eager to go, don't you?" His cheeks flush at your direct accusation, and he stands up, stammering to justify himself.
"I-I, no... it would be useful. Y-yes, it would allow us to make progress on our mission." You can't help but laugh at his beet red face, and you put the marker back in its place before joining him.
"I was jesting, don't worry." You pat him on the shoulder and head to your room to choose your outfit for tonight.ย
"What time is it?" You ask from the bedroom. Jean's voice booms from the living room.ย
"Twenty past seven. The Centurion opens in about an hour." You nod and close the door behind you, taking a lovely red dress from your closet. Its plunging sweetheart neckline, puffed sleeves, and cinched waist make it particularly elegant, with a pleated skirt that falls to the knees.
You leave the room after a few minutes and find Jean drinking a cup of chamomile tea at the kitchen table when he notices you.
"Oh wow... you look absolutely stunning." He exclaims, his gaze lingering on your figure as you spin around to show him your outfit.
"Now it's your turn to get dressed. We're taking the car this time." He nods and heads to your room. While he gets dressed, you look at the map of the places you circled, silently hoping to find some answers tonight.
You feel like you haven't spoken to Ackerman in years, even though it's only been three days. You're itching to call him as soon as possible and as often as you can to show him you're making progress and that the mission is going perfectly. You want him to be proud of you.
"Let's hope everything goes well." You sigh, and Jean leaves the room at that moment, dressed in a dark gray tuxedo with a black tie and a crisp white shirt. His black shoes are so polished they could be used as a mirror. He's holding a pot of hair gel and runs his fingers through his hair to keep them in place.
He combs his hair with the gel, gently pulling at a few strands to position them perfectly, before glancing in the small mirror near the front door to make sure he looks sufficiently aristocratic.ย
"My lady." He places the pot on a small table and extends his arm. You intertwine your arms and leave your small apartment, calmly descending the stairs before heading to your car. He opens the door for you, of course, before getting behind the wheel.
"The Centurion Cabaret apparently has a collection of century-old wines." You lean your head back in your seat, and Jean chuckles softly, keeping his eyes on the road.
"Don't even think about drinking more than a glass of wine. You don't hold your liquor very well, Y/N." His gaze meets yours for a moment, and he shakes his head, a mixture of mockery and amusement in his expression.
"I can hold my liquor, I just need to get home before the symptoms of insobriety start." You retort, crossing your arms and playing with the small pendant around your neck, nestled just above your cleavage.
"Two drinks is the most I'll allow. Any more than that, and I'll tie you to a chair to stop you from acting like you usually do when you're drunk. You need to stay sober tonight." You roll your eyes at his commanding tone, but you nod anyway, knowing you're not exactly in your right mind when you've had a few drinks.
"Big Brother Jean is back, everyone." You try to hide your amused smile by putting a hand to your mouth, just as Jean realizes what you've said and glares at you.
"You're lucky I put up with you, otherwise you'd be walking to the cabaret right now." Jean tilts his head forward before turning his attention back to the road, stopping behind cars that are waiting at red lights.
"And no matter how annoying I can be, we're still friends. Anyway, I don't even need to drink to put people at ease. I use my charm to get information out of them." You rest your elbow on the windowsill and your cheek against your fist as you watch the passersby, most of them dressed in luxury clothes on their nighttime stroll, followed by servants carrying bags and umbrellas.
"You use it all the time, constantly." Jean taps the steering wheel with his fingertips as he rounds a corner, turning onto a sumptuous street lit by gleaming white lampposts and lined with palatial boutiques. Their facades glitter with gold and valuable goods, alarms are mounted above the doors, and security cameras are fixed to every floor.
"Centurion Cabaret is right here." You point to the scarlet building with its glittering lights and monumental door. The lack of windows on the facade suggests that the opulence hidden behind these walls is only accessible to those who can afford to come here.
Fortunately, the cabaret doesn't require a membership card, but two bodyguards stand at the entrance, thoroughly inspecting every single person before letting them in.To gain entry, you have to look wealthy and drop enough money into a red metal box that has a centurion drawn on it: the cabaret's logo.
$5: Table of your choice
$10: Personal waiter for the evening
$15: Front row seat, personal chef
$30: Suite for one night with a king size bed, hammam, living room, and all amenities included.
"These are the kinds of offers you see in hotels, aren't they?" You glance at Jean, who's parallel parking his car. A bead of sweat trickles down his temple as he tries to squeeze between the cars parked in front of and behind him to avoid a collision.
"It's the biggest cabaret in the region; I assume it's the kind of establishment that can afford to make offers like these." He sighs with relief as he finally manages to park his car properly. He gets out and approaches your side, offering his hand to help you step out of the car. His hand gently smooths the front of your dress.
You observe the line of people in front of the building and position yourself behind two young men who appear to belong to Marley Academy, the most prestigious institution on the continent. They are wearing expensive suits and their shoes gleam brilliantly, but their speech lacks the refinement expected of young men of high society.
"I'm sure I can take one of those girls home." A brown-haired boy says, grinning arrogantly, while his friend glances at the people ahead to see how much longer they would have to wait before getting in.ย
"I'd love to see what they're hiding under their skirts. If I could, I'd go backstage and give them a taste of money. These girls are poor; they'd surely dream of sleeping with a rich man." You can't hide the contempt and disgust you feel at their words, which treat women like objects to be touched, manipulated, and discarded.
These men behave like dogs in heat, following their instincts and thinking the world revolves around them, while women want nothing to do with them. That is how they are in this society. And because they are young, they are respected, considered young adults preparing for real life, having fun while they still can, becoming real men.
What a loathsome vision of the world.
"These ladies aren't here for you, gentlemen. They're just doing their jobs to get paid; you don't interest them at all." Jean suddenly speaks, drawing the attention of the two young men who look up, realizing he is much taller than them, towering over them with his giant stature, half his face shrouded in the shadows.
"Who are you, sir? Aren't you here for the same reason? Stop playing the moralizer." The brown-haired boy's friend, a stocky young man, with greasy black hair that are slicked back, a lock falling over his forehead, retorts, irritation coating his voice, while he glares at Jean as if challenging him to repeat his words.
In response, your fake husband put his arm around your waist and pulls you close, smiling at the two students. "I'm here with my wife for a meeting with an important business partner. Unlike you, I'm here to drink and do business, not to ogle."
He only receives silence from the two boys for response, so he continues to insult them virulently. "You're not ready for society if you still don't understand that women deserve respect, love, and protection. They are not meant to be used and looked at lustfully by trash like you. Understand?"
The two young men nod, stunned, their faces frozen in shock at the torrent of insults they had just received. The brown-haired boy swallows and leaves the line, immediately followed by the black-haired one. They return to their car, deeply humiliated by Jean's words.
"Why did youโ" You begin but Jean gently places a finger to your lips to cut you off and smiles.
"Idiots like them should be taught a lesson. I was disrespectful to my own mother when I was young, and I learned the hard way that women should be respected as equals. I'm simply helping them improve. And I sincerely hope they'll keep what I just told them in mind." You nod, a wave of gratitude washing over you at the fact that Jean had stood up for women he didn't know without hesitation. You glance back at the front of the queue where you are, unaware that all the people ahead of you have already entered the cabaret.
"Your names?" A tall, handsome blond guard asks you at the entrance. You and Jean present your fake IDs. He examines them carefully, glancing at the papers and then at both of you before nodding toward the board of offers.
Jean slips two five-dollar bills into the man's hand. You've both opted for the cheapest option, which will allow you to move freely between the tables and chat with as many people as possible. If you choose the more expensive options, all eyes will be on you and your wealth. Rumours spreads fast, it's best to keep a low profile.
You smile at the man at the entrance who opens the door for you. As soon as you step into the lobby of the Centurion Cabaret, you realize that this place surpasses anything you could have imagined. Even in your wildest dreams, you never would have believed you could see such a place in real life.
The beige walls are crisscrossed with golden cracks that give them a shimmering and magical appearance. The domed ceiling is adorned with paintings of Roman centurions battling tigers, animals, and even other enemy soldiers. Gladiators are depicted above the twenty columns placed at regular intervals around the room, some with swords, others with other weapons such as daggers or tridents and nets.ย
A huge burgundy carpet covers the entire hall, its plush fabric muffling the sound of your heels. An attendant stands near a small board displaying the evening's program. You have two options: the French cancan or the magic show.
Most of the young people head to the French Cancan, so you and Jean follow them, knowing it is the perfect place to strike up a conversation.ย
You enter the grand hall on your left and discover even greater luxury. The walls are red, and crystal chandeliers, suspended from the ceiling, cast a soft golden light on the tables. About thirty tables are arranged in the room, covered with cherry red tablecloths, and wine glasses are already placed on those where members of high society, who have come to enjoy themselves this evening, are seated.
At the front of the room is a raised stage made of solid wood, designed so that the click of the dancers' heels echoes throughout the hall. A red curtain, embroidered with gold lettering spelling out the establishment's name, Centurion Cabaret, in elegant calligraphy, covers the back of the stage to hide the dancers before the show begins.
"I wasn't expecting such splendour." Jean whispers to you as you find a table in the center of the room and sit. A waiter brings you glasses of wine as soon as you take your seat in the plush velvet armchairs, their backs upholstered in embroidered dark red fabric.
"Let's split up. You go talk to everyone, okay? We need to know what happened to Marcel Galliard. I'll sit here and watch the people coming in." You whisper to Jean and take a sip of wine before swirling the Burgundy in your glass, all while watching the men who enter the room, searching for anyone who looks like Galliard.
"Take care and stay safe, ma chรฉrie." Jean gets up from the table and walks over to a table where a man is sitting alone, staring at the other people seated at their tables.
Jean pov
Jean walks over to a small table where a man is sitting alone, sipping his wine while staring at the red curtains that conceal the stage, clearly waiting for the dancers to arrive.
"Are you waiting for the show to start?" He asks lightly, sitting down opposite the stranger. He seems tall, perhaps a few inches shorter than Jean, with high cheekbones and a crew cut.
His dark eyes are piercing like a hawk's, and his gaunt face gives him the air of a ghost haunting the place. But when he hears Jean, he smiles and lets out a soft laugh. "I came just for this." The man replies, and Jean extends his hand.
"My name is Jean, and you?"
"Griez. Nice to meet you." The man takes another sip of wine while enthusiastically shaking his hand. His palms are calloused, typical of someone who lifts heavy loads; if this man is not a soldier, he must surely work on a construction site all day.
"It's actually my first time here." Jean tells him, lightening the mood before steering him in the direction he wants to obtain information.
Griez's eyes widen as he looks at Jean before throwing a glance at the stage a few meters away from their table. "You were really missing out, man. This place is heavenly, the dancers are gorgeous, and they even come down sometimes to chat with us."
"Do they come to see you often?" Jean asks, feigning interest before discreetly changing the subject little by little as the man sips his wine.
"Sometimes, especially when I manage to snag a front-row seat." Jean nods and glances around the room, observing the mostly male audience whose conversations revolve around the dancers and their costumes.
"Do we serve anything other than wine here?" He nods toward the bottle on the table, then pretends to smoke something. Griez understands what he means, downs his glass in one gulp, wipes his mouth with his sleeve, and finally answers Jean's question.
"Yes, but the supplier isn't here yet. Do you want it hard or soft?" His voice drops to a whisper, forcing Jean to move closer to hear him clearly.
"For now, just soft. Who can supply me? I've got the money." Griez takes one last look around the room before gesturing for Jean to lean even closer.
"Marcel Galliard is officially the best drug dealer in all of Marley. He was arrested three months ago, but due to lack of evidence, they had to release him. He's still keeping a low profile, though." Jean freezes at the mention of Marcel Galliard, the name of the man you had shwon him in the crumpled news article you had brought home with you. He wants to run to you and announce his discovery, so you would be on your guard and spot this man as soon as he arrived, but he has to remain seated to get as much information as possible from Griez.ย
"I've heard of him. Does he come here often?" He takes a sip of wine to calm his excitement at having found someone willing to talk.
"Twice a week, and you're in luck, he's coming today. I'm close to him, you see, his best client."Griez puts a hand on his chest, as if he should be proud of his friendship with a drug dealer, but Jean pats him on the back to congratulate him and continue extracting information.
"Thank you, my friend. I just saw one of my acquaintances at a table. I'll go talk to them and wait for Marcel." He gets up from the table and raises his glass of wine toward the man as a goodbye before returning to where he left you.
Jean stops dead in his tracks when he sees you sitting alone at the table, the chandeliers in the room bathing your face in an almost ethereal light. He watches your delicate hand holding the glass as you sip your drink, your red dress adding a whole new charm to your complexion and making you a thousand times more beautiful.
His heart races at the sight of you; in fact, it always does when he sees you. He breathes slowly and approaches you, sitting opposite you with a knowing smile.
"Galliard will be here tonight." He tells you, and a radiant smile lights up your face, sending a whirlwind of emotions through him.
"I came up with a plan while you were talking to that man." He places his elbows on the table to move closer to you, his eyes fixed on you.
"I'm listening."
"I have to go home with Galliard."
Jean nearly falls off his chair at your sudden declaration and has to grab the tablecloth to keep from falling. His palms become sweaty and he can't help but stutter, his words colliding with each other as they leave his lips. "Ah... uh... w-why? Galliard? What theโwhy are you saying this?"
"We'll get information about his business and more leads if we go to his place. But to avoid any risks, it's best if I pretend to be a dancer and seduce him." You reply matter-of-factly, sure that your plan will unfold exactly as you expect.
The worst part is that Jean can't even claim it's not a brilliant idea, but the thought of you having to go to another man's house hurts him deeply, much more than he'll ever admit.
"And how are you going to find a dancer's costume?" He asks you, even though he already has a little idea of โโhow you're going to solve this problem.
You give him a playful smile at his question, and Jean already knows your idea is risky. Unfortunately, he can't deny that this is the side of you he likes best. Your daring side.ย
"There's a back door for the dancers. I'll sneak in, knock a girl out, and take her place." He wipes a bead of sweat from his forehead and runs a hand through his hair, exhaling through his nose, while you stare at him, waiting for a reply.
"I trust you. BUT, if anything bad happens, you stop immediately. Your life is not a game." You give him a small grin in response to his worried expression before standing up and bowing.ย
"Stay here and watch how everything will unfold smoothly." He watches you walk away toward the exit and prays that Galliard won't get a chance to touch you, but deep down, he knows physical contact will be necessary for your plan to work.
Y/N pov
You leave the Centurion Cabaret and turn a corner to reach the back alley behind the building. The small iron door at the end indicates that it indeed leads to the dancers' dressing rooms. You hear their chatter and laughter as they prepare for their show.ย
You open the door, just enough to let in a thin sliver of light, and watch the dancers, waiting for the right moment to slip inside.
You observe their heavy costumes, their tight corsets, and their flowing skirts made of various shades of red fabric, not to mention the garters and stockings they wear underneath.
What have I gotten myself into?
You wait patiently until the dancers have turned away and returned to their dressing rooms for final makeup touches. You enter when they are all behind their curtains and head to the first dressing room, walking stealthily toward the scarlet curtains.
There, you find a young girl carefully brushing her hair, half-dressed. She sees you in the reflection of her vanity mirror and opens her mouth to shout, but you cover her mouth with a hand before a single sound can escape from her lips.
She fights and struggles with all her might as you take a small piece of cloth and press it over her mouth, watching her fight for air. You close your eyes as her limbs grow heavy and she slowly slouches, the struggle waning as her brain cries out for oxygen.
You release her as soon as she loses consciousness, checking that her pulse is still regular before opening the dark red doors of a closet and pushing her inside. As you do so, you steal her costume before slipping a broom into the handles to prevent her from falling and revealing that there is an intruder among the dancers.
You quickly undress and put on her stockings, then her thick skirt. It surprisingly is flowing and very light, but you blush when you realize you'll have to lift your legs in front of an almost entirely male audience, Jean among them.
You take a deep breath to calm yourself as you tie the corset and slip on the small Colombina lace mask that comes with the costume, then the feathered headdress. You lace up your shoes, apply a deep red lipstick to make your lips stand out, and a touch of blush, all in five minutes flat, knowing the show is about to start.
"You can do it, just copy their dance moves and pray for the best. Come on, Y/N." You whisper to yourself in front of the vanity, trying to get rid of the knot of anxiety that just formed in your stomach.
"Louise, come on, stop getting all dolled up!" A deep voice calls to you from behind the curtains, and you jump. You quickly smooth down your clothes and make sure your makeup really makes you look like a French cancan dancer before you leave your dressing room.
"Excuse me." You bow to the man who is standing in front of you and head out with the other girls, stopping just behind the stage curtains. You search for Louise's assigned position, letting the other dancers guide you to the center.
Great, this Louise is the prima ballerina of French Cancan.
[Play Orpheus in the Underworld: Can-Can]
Cheers erupt from the crowd at the first notes of the catchy music, as the curtains slowly rise. A blinding spotlight shines in your face, and you raise your hand high, mimicking a confident lead dancer, a wide smile on your face.
"Come on, girls! Make sure they don't regret spending their money tonight." A girl calls beside you, lifting her skirt. You nod and follow her movements, your eyes fixed on her legs as you try to dance like her.
You search for Jean in the crowd and find him in seconds. He is frozen like a statue, his eyes wide and mouth wide open in shock, his hand clutching his glass of wine.
You glance around the room and lift your right leg high, your skirt billowing in the breeze, smiling to the rhythm of the music. You watch the other dancers who suddenly step aside to make way for you at the front of the stage.
You stare at them, stunned, and are speechless when they gesture for you to make Louise's signature move.
Merde.
You force yourself to smile and glance at Jean one last time as you step back, hoping to convince them that Louise has decided to try something new.
You start running and perform three back handsprings before leaping high and doing a backflip. Your heels click on the smooth floor as you land perfectly, arms raised to the sky, under the astonished gaze of the dancers and the crowd.
The crowd erupts in applause, and you smile before stepping back with the dancers, lifting your legs high and twirling around, your skirt billowing like a cloud around your knees. A young blonde woman with her hair pulled back in a bun smiles at you.
"That was surprising. I didn't know you could do that!" You let out a small giggle before replying.
"I wanted to do something different." You spin around and mimic her movements, feeling more at ease, even though you keep lifting your legs very high, almost in a split. You feel your discomfort slowly subside, and you continue dancing, your eyes fixed on the tables, searching for Marcel Galliard.
Jean pov
Jean felt like banging his head against a wall until all his memories of the last few minutes faded away. He couldn't believe you'd actually walked onto the stage and started dancing like a real cancan dancer, dressed in the brightly coloured clothes of the Centurion Cabaret's performers.
He couldn't deny you looked absolutely stunning in your costume, with that corset cinching your waist and that full red skirt that made you look so alluring.
He nearly smashed his wine glass, frozen in shock, when you lifted your leg in the air, revealing the sparkly red shorts you were wearing underneath your skirt.
He almost punched a boy at a nearby table when he heard him utter obscenities, like "I'll take her home." after your backflip on stage. A fucking backflip, for God's sake! You were full of surprises, and he couldn't hide his jealousy at the thought of all those men swooning over you and your many talents.
He couldn't help but watch as you twirled, jumped, and spun like a true dancer on stage, your smile shining even brighter than the spotlights.
You were a star.
Y/N pov
You hold the girls' hands on your left and right, clicking your heels in time with the dance floor, your skirts swirling in a blue of colours.
Sweat trickles down your back and your legs begin to cramp, but you maintain your radiant smile, keeping your star dancer attitude on stage for the audience.
You spin around, raise your arms in the air, and kick high in the air, taking a few steps forward to form a circle. All the girls simultaneously raise their left leg, their shoes meeting in the center to create a sort of flower with their flowing skirts.
You wince as you try to keep your leg raised, leaning lightly against another girl's for support, as you jump, creating the illusion of a carousel of red fabric and feathers.
After a few seconds, the dancers finally bring their leg back to the ground and step back toward the back of the stage, linking arms to dance together once again. You raise your leg right in time with the music, and their panting breaths reassure you: you're not the only one out of breath from this performance.
The music slows to a more sensual rhythm, and the girls disperse in the direction of the two small staircases on either side of the stage. You realize they're descending toward the audience.
This is your chance to find Galliard before another girl snatches him away.
Three girls approach Jean, which makes you laugh as you watch him backing away in his seat, fear in his eyes, raising his hands to push them away while he tells them something you can't hear because of the distance between you two.
[Play Dirty Diana by Michael Jackson]
You weave your way between the tables, feeling men trying to brush their fingertips against your ribs as you pass by, seeking your attention, but your attention is entirely on one man. You find him sitting at the very back, under a gas lamp, alone at a table, sipping his wine.
Marcel Galliard.
The furrow of his brow and the expression on his face leaves no doubt: it is him. He stares at the dancers with eyes filled with lust, which in return fills you with profound disgust. Yet you creep toward him, lifting your skirt just enough for him to glimpse the garter on your thigh.
"Good evening, sir." You say in a soft, honeyed voice, lightly touching his cheek as you position yourself behind him, your chest pressing against the back of his neck.
"Good evening to you, pretty lady." He replies in a deep voice, and you see his hand tremble slightly at his side as he restrains himself from touching you more than is permitted here.
"I sense tension in your shoulders, sir. Would you like me to ease it?" You whisper close to his ear and feel him freeze at your suggestive request. He nods as you massage his shoulders, slowly sliding your fingers down to caress his chest.
"What time do you finish work?" He asks, his voice husky with desire. You stifle a laugh of relief at the success of your plan. Men are so predictable when it comes to a woman's body.
"In ten minute. You'll be waiting for me in the alley behind the cabaret, handsome?" You gently kiss his earlobe before stepping away, leaving him flushed, his hand on his crotch, adjusting his pants, clearly trying to control the effect your words had on his body.
You walk past Jean and smile discreetly to let him know everything's alright. He nods absently, his gaze still fixed on nothing, as if he'd seen a monster.
You return to the changing room, draw the curtains, and quickly undress. You slip into your dress, which you'd tucked away in a corner.
You put Louise's costume back where you found it and finally open the closet door. The girl falls out, still unconscious. You place her on the chair in front of her dressing table and pinch her earlobe. She jumps and opens her eyes instantly.ย
Before she has time to call for help, you slip out the back door and reach Marcel's car, parked near a wall covered in vines and laurel.
You slide into the passenger seat of his onyx black Talbot-Lago T26, admiring the inside of his car and the small decorative flower stickers on his glove compartment.
"You were incredible on stage. You have a knack for attracting attention." Marcel glances at you as he reverses out of the alley and drives off into the deserted streets of Liberio.
You let out a soft laugh and place your hand on his bicep, squeezing it lightly. "And you looked so handsome at your table. I saw you while I was dancing. Your presence caught my attention too."
He smiles at your declaration, and his hand slides from the steering wheel to your thigh, gently caressing it. A shiver of unease runs through you, but you remain still, pretending to be interesting in him so your plan works.ย
As soon as we get to your place, I'll knock you out.
"I'll consider you a gift from heaven." Marcel says, his eyes fixed on the road, as his hand slides up your thigh. You take a deep breath and look out the window, but he adds something else in a low, husky voice, thick with lust.
"I can't wait to unwrap my gift." You force a smile at his infuriating advances, and turn your head to look at him, placing your hand on the one on your thigh to stop him from going any further.
"And I can't wait to see the Adonis body you're hiding under all those layers of clothing." He bursts into thunderous laughter at your bold words and rubs his thumb against your thigh.
"You'll see. You won't want to leave my bed after tonight." He turns into a small street lined with middle-class apartment buildings. For someone so wealthy, you expected a more lavish house, but he probably prefers to keep a low profile considering the police is constantly after him.
He gets out of the car and you follow him up the stairs to his apartment while he stares at youโor rather your bodyโwith a ravenous look of need and desire, nothing romantic, only sexual urges.
He slips a key into the lock and enters, you following him closely. You don't even have time to close the door behind you before he slams it shut and presses his lips to yours, the taste of wine filling your mouth.
You almost push him away, but you remember why you're doing this. You kiss Marcel back with fervour, thinking of Jean instead, who must be in your apartment, worried about you, wondering if everything is alright.
You grab Marcel's collar and stumble back to his room, on your left. You glance around: white walls with no wallpaper, instead covered in photos, receipts, maps, and lists.
His bed is huge, a king-size with dark blue sheets, which he pushes you onto. You prop yourself up on your elbows and watch him unbutton his shirt, licking his swollen lips while his eyes wander over your thighs. "I'll be gentle, don't worry."
He presses his body against yours, his hips rubbing against yours roughly, and kisses you again. He parts your lips with his mouth and slides his tongue inside. As he loses himself in the sensation of your body, your arm moves toward the bedside table where a lamp sits.
You grasp the base and, holding it firmly, strike Marcel hard on the back of the head. He gasps and bites your lip when the lamp hits him, drawing blood.
He sits up and puts his hand to the back of his head. A faint trace of blood appears on his fingers. He stares at you in disbelief before you strike him again, this time knocking him unconscious.
He collapses on top of you, and you groan as you push his body off of you. You wipe your mouth and place the lamp back on the bedside table, gently wiping it with a towel you find on the floor to make sure no trace of blood remains. You'll bring this towel with you so when Galliard wakes up, he won't see the traces of blood on it and remember your face.
You watch him and his steady breathing, a sign that he won't die from the two blows to the head, but that he'll likely be unconscious for at least a day.
Your skirt has ridden up your thighs and you pull it back down to your knees, a shiver of disgust running up your legs at the memory of Marcel touching you, then you walk over to the numerous papers pinned to the wall. You read the order receipts, ranging from small cigarettes to drugs like marijuana and opium.
You stare at the map pinned to his wall and take a pencil and paper from his desk. You jot down each location, from isolated houses to large corporations, and one name in particular catches your eye: Tybur Industries.
Tybur Industries, a company whose name you've never heard beforeโif it really is a company and not a code name. You scan the papers and lists on the walls of Galliard's room and find the name Willy Tybur repeatedly. It appears in almost every document.
You search for the most recent receipt, scanning the walls and jotting down notes before finally stopping your gaze on a portion of wall, right next to the bedside table next to the bed where Marcel still lies unconscious, his faint breathing filling the room.ย
You find a receipt dated two days ago, made out to Willy Tybur, and just below this name, the location of their next transaction.
The Hippodrome.

II. Welcome To Liberio
If someone had told you two days ago that you were going to marry Jean Kirstein, you would have burst out laughing right in their face.
And yet, here you are, in Levi Ackerman's office, with him by your side as your new husband.
"Eight o'clock sharp. You're following my orders without any complaint, perfect." The dark-haired man gives you an approving look, nodding his head as he looks at you and Jean.
"Go to the city hall." He tells you from his desk, his chin resting on his hands while he waits for you two to leave the room. Jean doesn't seem to understand the message and instead tilts his head to the right before looking at Ackerman, his facial features twisted in perplexity. "Why?"
"Wedding photos to make everything more realistic. The clothes are provided, all you have to do is go." He finally understands the purpose of this small trip and follows you as you leave Levi's office, heading toward the agency parking lot to get your car.
"We're taking my car." Before you can even reply, Jean shows you his keys dangling from his hand, twirling them around his index finger before he unlocks his car doors.
"I'm driving." You smile and snatch the keys from his hand. You then slide into the driver's seat and turn his keys in the ignition, ready to drive as soon as he gets inside the car.
"You like taking the initiative? I like that." He shrugs and opens the passenger door before sliding into the seat beside you, arms crossed over his chest as he gives you a playful wink.
"I drive better than you." You add, turning the steering wheel to leave the parking lot and go to the city hall. Jean lets out a gleeful laugh at your argument, a glint of amusement shining in his brown eyes.
"You sure know how to drive a man crazy." You smile at his reply, enjoying this exchange full of banter between the two of you, a daily habit to which you have become attached over the years.
"I'm quite proud of this skill." You look back at the road as you reach the roundabout in the center of Trost, the town hall visible from the corner of your eye.
The headquarters of Paradis' Secret Services are ideally located, right next to the town hall and the garrison; in case of emergency, both can be contacted in the blink of an eye.
You turn right to enter the public parking lot, the space still empty before working hours except for the occasional stray cats fighting.
"Let's go take these pictures." Jean gets out of the car first and goes to your side just as you put your hand on the door handle, opening it before you can even pull it toward you.
"Thank you." You turn toward him, feet pointed in his direction as you rest your elbow on your seat. Jean places his hand on the doorframe as you straighten up, your head fortunately hitting his knuckles rather than the metal.
You cross the parking lot briskly and head toward the venue where your session will take place. As you enter, you see a young woman with light copper hair and hazel eyes setting up a camera on a stand.
To call this place a mere photo studio would be an understatement. Resembling a sumptuous ballroom, it is entirely white, adorned with tall, delicately carved green arches laden with peonies and hydrangeas. This entire place is a setting straight out of a fairy tale, the sun's rays casting their warm, golden light on the walls.
On either side of an aisle strewn with rose petals, snow-white chairs lead to a small altar. The view before you fills you with wonder, and you can't help but wish that one day, you will be here for a real photo shoot, alongside the man you will love and cherish forever.
"Do you like it? I can literally see stars in your eyes." Jean says, standing next to you with his hands in his pockets, looking at you with a small smile. You nod, your eyes wide with amazement, wondering how he could possibly remain unmoved by the beauty of this place.
"This is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. If I ever get married, I want the venue to be exactly like this." You look around, your eyes captivated by the variety of flowers arranged in fine china vases placed on small Doric columns at the end of each row of chairs.
"I will keep that in mind." Jean places his hand on the small of your back and invites you to join the photographer who is standing near the altar.
At the sound of your footsteps, the woman turns around and greets you with a broad smile on her dark red lips. "Hello to you both. I'm Carly Stratmann, and I'll be your photographer today. Your clothes are right here; you can go change, and then we can begin."
She nods at two chairs where your clothes and Jean's are carefully laid out. On one chair is a huge white dress and a veil, and on the other is a black tuxedo, a white shirt, and a black tie.
[Play Hungry Eyes by Eric Carmen]
You and Jean grab your clothes then head to the changing rooms adjacent to the main hall where you'll be taking your photos. There is a small cubicle, barely big enough for two, but you have to keep up appearances and act like a real married couple, so you decide to change together.
"I already like this suit. I hope I can keep it." Jean whistles as he examines the garment from head to toe before unbuttoning his shirt in a few quick movements, the sharp sound of its buttons echoing against the walls of the stall.ย
You slide your skirt down and place it next to his discarded shirt lying on the ground. Jean's gaze falls on your legs as he unbuckles his belt. You pull at the hem of your sweater, lost in thought, before gesturing to him.
"A little privacy would be welcome." He obeys immediately and turns around, putting on his clothes with his back to you while you remove your woollen sweater as quickly as possible.
You pat the enormous wedding dress twice to make sure it's not wrinkled and put it on; the ruffles rise up to your face and the heaviness of the skirts pull you toward the floor.
Unfortunately, a zipper runs from your lower back up to your shoulder blades. You can't reach it, so you have no choice but to ask Jean for help.
"Um, Jean..." You tap him on the shoulder, hoping he can't see the deep crimson blush that just appeared on your cheeks. You are really embarrassed to find yourself in a clichรฉ situation you've seen in many romance movies.
He glances at you, and his eyes widen when he notices you're holding the front of your dress, the back wide open.
"The zipper... I can't reach it." You turn around and straighten your posture as you feel his cold fingers on the small of your back.
"You do need my help after all." He murmurs in your ear and zips up your dress, his fingers gliding delicately along your skin.
"All done. No need to thank me, darling." He turns you around and places your veil on your head, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear so he can see your face better.
"My lady." He opens the door and bows respectfully to let you pass. You put your arm through his and walk, arm in arm, toward Carly Stratmann who is waiting near the altar with her camera.
"You two are absolutely gorgeous. The most beautiful couple I've ever seen, I know I'm going to love my day." She beams and signals to you and Jean to take your places at the altar.
"We will take many pictures, then you'll pick the best ones and I am going to mail them to you." Carly places her camera on its tripod and tells you how to pose.
Jean follows her instructions carefully; he places his hands on your hips, tilting his head toward yours so your noses touch, your eyes meeting.
"This seems terribly indecent to me." He whispers, a hint of a smile playing on his lips while you hear several clicks of the camera and Carly's compliments.
"Why? Does it bother you that much to kiss me?" You tease him by puckering up your lips, holding back your laugh when you see his face turn scarlet.
"Stop being so direct!" Jean exclaims, releasing his grip on your hips just as the clicks of the camera fade away. Carly waves her hand to get your attention and gestures for you to turn toward the window.
"Now, Y/N stand in front of Jean. And you, Jean, gently take her hips and rest your chin in the crook of her neck." You nod and stand in front of him, your movements a little stiff as you feel Jean's fingers splayed on your skin, digging lightly into your ribs. He rests his chin at the juncture of your shoulder and neck, his stubble brushing against your skin.
"Perfect! Amazing!" Carly exclaims between each click of the camera, circling around you and Jean to take pictures from every possible angle.
"And now, the final picture. I want Jean to lift you by the hips. You, Y/N, spread your arms like you're a bird soaring high in the air. Jean, can you manage to lift her?" Carly places her hand on her hip and turns to Jean, a doubtful look on her face that deeply wounds his ego.
"Of course I can do it. I could lift her with one hand if you asked me." He frowns and uses only his right hand to pick you up bridal style, turning to your photographer with a 'See? I told you so.' look on his face.
"Congratulations, strong man. Harold Cleghorn would be jealous of you." Jean sets you back on your feet for a fraction of a second before lifting you high into the air, his hands gripping your hips firmly as you lean forward and spread your arms to imitate a bird. You feel light, as if you were actually flying in the cerulean sky.
Carly starts taking pictures while you and Jean freeze your faces into temporary smiles for the photo, your eyes fixed on the window so as not to lose your balance.
After a few seconds, the photographer signals that she has finished taking the pictures. Jean smiles as he gently places you back on your feet, smoothing the folds of your white dress to remove any creases.
"I now have to go to the darkroom to develop them. It will take a maximum of three days to deliver them to you. Can you give me an address?" Carly looks at you and Jean while you stare at each other to agree on who she will deliver the photos to, since you will not be in Paradis tomorrow.
"Can you entrust them to Levi Ackerman? He works in the building at the end of the street. He's a friend of ours, he'll keep them safe because we're leaving for our honeymoon tonight." You reply with a broad smile and place your hand on Jean's arm to make your explanation more believable.
"Of course! I know Ackerman." Carly takes a notebook out of her pocket and scribbles an address in it before placing it on the pile of photos sitting next to her tripod.
"It was a pleasure working with you. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your honeymoon." She says before you leave the venue and head to the changing rooms. You leave your dress, veil, and Jean's clothes on a coat hanger, much to Jean's dismay, then walk back to his car to go to your respective apartments and pack your suitcases.
You reach the parking lot and stop in front of the car, raising the palm of your hand toward Jean to signal him to give you his keys.
Without a single word being exchanged between the two of you, he shoves his hand into his trousers pocket and takes out his keys before placing them in your hand with a small clink.
"I'll gladly save my energy for the mission. Thanks for driving." He pats you on the head before heading to the driver's side and opening the door, inviting you in. You let out a small scoff breathe and slide into your seat, then watch him walk around the car to get into the passenger seat.
You start driving to your apartment and Jean, his legs spread apart, contemplates the city, his fingers tapping his thigh thoughtfully before he breaks the slight silence that had settled in the car.
"Are you excited to be working for the newspaper?" He asks, his light brown eyes turned in your direction as he watches you cross the intersecting streets of Trost district.
"Absolutely. I read it every morning, it'll be great to see what goes on behind the scenes."
"I wonder who our colleagues will be, I hope they'll be easy to manipulate."
"In any case, we're not here to befriend them; we're here to get information by any means at our disposal." You watch him loosen his tie, your eyes lingering on the prominent veins in his hands.
"Do you want to run the show? I love someone who takes charge." He puts his arms behind his head and whistles happily as you turn on the radio to listen to the news.
"I'm starting to think you like everything I do and say." You turn right and pass a street stall piled high with kebabs and various toppings. The spicy aroma of the food wafts through the air, the fragrant smoke rising from the grill making your mouth water as your appetite grows.
"You know me so well, I'm flattered." Jean follows your gaze and stares at the stall, whose vendor is waving at him from behind the grill.
"I'm glad I make you happy." You look at him and he turns his head at the same time, your faces coming very close to each other as he leans toward you.
"Just having you here will make me the happiest man in the world. Therewith, are you hungry?" He nods at the food you've been eyeing since turning into this street. You nod enthusiastically, pulling over to the side of the road in the blink of an eye.
Jean gets out of the car and takes a step to open your door, but you are too hungry to wait for him, so you open your door abruptly and go join him on the paved sidewalk.
Your skirt billows in the wind as the crisp autumn air slips through the branches of the trees lining the sidewalk, their leaves falling to the icy ground as the last days of the season make way for the first days of winter.
"Good morning sir. Two skewers, please." The man standing at the stall greets you with a smile, then looks at Jean.
"Two skewers for the pretty lady and her charming husband, two!" He quickly takes pieces of chicken out of a container next to him before sliding them onto two skewers. He grills them over the fire, adding oil from time to time to intensify the flame and provide a little spectacle.
"Enjoy your meal!" He places the two skewers in a paper bag bearing his food stall's logo. You admire the bright blue colors of "Paradis Chicken" shining on the bag before taking out a skewer and tasting it.
"Have an amazing day, sir, it's so delicious!" You exclaim as you and Jean make your way back to your car. This time, he walks faster than you and opens the driver door for you. You acknowledge his action with a nod before slipping into your seat and driving off again after your small snack break.
"I didn't realize how hungry I was." You take the steering wheel with one hand while continuing to eat the grilled chicken.
"I hope he stays here for a long time; his business will thrive thanks to your presence in the building next door." Jean raises his eyebrows at you and takes his skewer out of the paper bag.
"I'm going to ask Ackerman for a budget for food. Do you think he'll agree if I tell him his agents need as much energy as possible and that food will revive them, but it is really expensive? Chicken is full of protein, it's convincing, no?" You finish your kebab and throw it into the paper bag sitting on Jean's lap.
The boy hums softly for a few seconds, thinking about what you just said, before letting out a small laugh. "Since it's you, he'll probably do it. You're the best agent, after all."
"Aww, thank you for confirming what I already knew. You really are the best, Kirstein." You beam as you enter the parking lot of your residence, looking for an empty space at this hour when none of your elderly neighbors have yet left their homes.
"Well, for now, I think the rest of my plans for the day are to pack my bags and hide everything. Pretty pleasant, apart from the hiding and packing." You open the driver's door and get out of the car, tapping twice on Jean's window as a goodbye before going into your apartment.
You start rummaging through your papers, your clothes, your jewelry and anything else that comes to mind, putting everything useful or valuable into your suitcases.
You have two suitcases in total, which is far too many from Ackerman's point of view, but acceptable to you. You're going to buy clothes in Liberio anyway; there's no need to bring your entire wardrobe, which will surely be out of fashion on the other side of the sea.
You hide your important papers under a floorboard and in a crevice tucked away just behind the wallpaper in your kitchen. You conceal as much as possible in every nook and cranny of your apartment, behind cupboards, under the sink, under your bed, in the mirror, everywhere.
As an active agent, you never know when someone will start to suspect you. If the police obtain a search warrant for your home, it's best to leave behind everyday items that won't arouse suspicion.
You look for the documents Sasha forged for you, but you can't find them. It's only when you search through your desk drawers that you realize where they are.
"I forgot the papers at Jean's. Damn it!" You groan in frustration as you walk to your front door and put on your shoes.
You walk down the stairs two at a time and get into your car. You'll drive quickly to his apartment, grab the papers, and be gone in seconds. You're in a hurry; there's no time to talk.
You park in front of his building and admire quickly the beautiful green residence with its sparkling windows and dark green wrought-iron balconies. You climb the stairs and contemplate the magnificent cherrywood staircase and the polished lamps in the hallway, turned off for the day, as the morning sun illuminates the lobby.
You go up to the second floor and take his apartment keys out of your coat pocket โ just like you, Jean gave you a duplicate of his keys so you could come and go as you pleased.
You unlock the door and enter his home, only to find Marco Bodt shirtless with just a towel wrapped around his waist, his hair dripping wetโhe must have been in the shower.
[Inspo for this scene. I need him so bad T-T. Art creds: elionhardt_ on Instagram]
"Forgive me for the disturbance." You turn around but hit your head against the wall, a feeling of dizziness taking hold of you from the impact.
Disoriented, you stumble backward, your foot scraping against the carpet, and you almost fall, but Marco catches you at the last second and pulls you up, leaning you against him and pressing your hand against the wall to regain your senses and not lose your balance again.
His towel slides even lower, revealing his hips and the scars and burn marks that cover them entirely.
As if things couldn't get any worse, the door handle turns and Jean walks in, his face freezing in shock at seeing you and Marco, strangely close to each other in the vestibule of his own apartment.
"What the hell is going on here?" He asks himself, or perhaps you, or Marco; judging by the low tone of his voice and how he isn't looking at anyone in particular, it's hard to guess. Regardless of who he's talking to, his knuckles are white from how tight he is gripping the bag of groceries in his hand.
Marco takes you by the shoulders and lets out a small laugh to lighten the mood. "Y/N's here. She wasn't expecting to see me, and I wasn't expecting to see her."
"So you two hugged?" Jean asks in a hoarse, tense voice, his eyelid twitching. Marco immediately lets go of you and raises his hands in surrender to calm his friend.
"No, no, she turned around and hit her head against the wall by accident. I caught her before she fell. I swear that's what happened, Y/N can confirm it!" He hides behind you before glancing over your shoulder to see if Jean has moved from the doorway.
The latter raises his eyebrow at you and you nod slightly to confirm what Marco said. Jean exhales deeply and you can almost see a weight lift from his shoulders as he closes the door behind him, finally emerging from his stupor.
"Stop walking around naked in my apartment, you idiot!" He bumps into his friend, giving him a threatening glare.
"I'm wearing a towel!" Marco retorts, pointing to the piece of fabric still wrapped around his waist.
He stares at Jean with his good eye, the other only looking in the distance, its milky white iris staring blankly ahead as he closes his eyelid slightly.
You look down at his body, at the multiple scars, bumps, and burns that are carved into his flesh and mar him. His suffering goes back a long way, but the consequences of the battle are still visible.
You found him half-dead on the battlefield during the Battle of Trost four years ago. He was covered in blood, the warm liquid flowing from him as you almost saw life leave his eyes.
Fortunately, he was rushed to the nearest hospital and saved in time. He hadn't been completely blown off to bits like most of your comrades; his internal organs were affected, but none had prolapsed, and he was able to survive.
Marco lost sight in his right eye after shrapnel was deeply embedded in his cornea. He usually covers it with an eye patch, as his eye remains sensitive to light and is extremely painful when exposed to a bright source of light.
Jean sobbed all night, convinced his friend was dead. He even cried during lunch with the rest of the regiment the next day and for part of the night afterward, while you waited for news of Marco.
This tragedy occurred four years ago, at the infamous Battle of Trost District, where you suffered the greatest loss of friends in your life. Certainly, there have been other battles and even more casualties, but most of them weren't comrades you'd grown up with and trained alongside.
As if by magic, Jean's voice pulls you from your thoughts, dragging you from the battlefield back to his apartment.
"What are you doing here? I don't think it's just because you missed my company." He smiles, stuffing his grocery bag into his friend's hands, seemingly oblivious to the fact Marco is still wearing only a towel.
"I came to get the papers Sasha forged for me." You cross your arms and lean against the wall, scanning the apartment with your eyes for the elusive documents.
"Oh, I'm sorry I forgot to give them to you." He strides to the kitchen table and picks up a small stack of papers from the surface, sweeping them in his hand before turning back to you, ignoring Marco who is just standing frozen in the middle of his friend's home.
"Here they are, miss. Fake driver's license, fake passport, fake diplomas, and fake birth certificate. Sasha did an excellent job, they look real." He smiles as he places the papers in your outstretched hand, his fingertips brushing against your skin.
"Ackerman said we should receive the wedding photos in two days. As soon as we get them, I'll print a few small copies so you can keep one in your wallet." You look at him dubiously before speaking, a teasing smile playing on your lips.
โWill you?"
"You know I will."
You lock eyes for a few seconds, your gaze intertwining with the same intensity, before Marco breaks the silence.
"I'm going to get dressed." He says, then starts jogging toward Jean's bedroom, slamming the door behind him and turning on the radio to its maximum volume to block out any outside noise for some reason.
"Have you packed your bags yet?" You ask Jean, heading over to the dining table and sitting down in the nearest chair. Normally, there are only two chairs, one for him and one for you, but since Marco has been coming more often, a third has been added.
"We're leaving tomorrow morning. I hope everything's ready, otherwise Ackerman's going to give me an earful." He shakes his head and chuckles softly as he sits in the chair across from you.
"Is your heart pounding too? I feel like mine could explode any second." You smile, placing your hand on your chest and breathing heavily to emphasize your point.ย
"The future of the nation rests on our shoulders. Your stress is comprehensible." Jean rests his chin on his fist and looks up at you.ย
"The way you say it makes it sound so much less stressful." You say sarcastically, taking an apple from the fruit bowl beside you and throwing it in the air before catching it at the last second.
"We won't be in Paradis for a long time. A mission this important can't be accomplished in just a few days." Jean glances back at his home with a touch of nostalgia.
"We can spy on the people at our job; that'll get us information as quickly as possible." You suggest, throwing the apple high in the air, your eyes fixed on the boy sitting across from you.
"Grand Theater." He blurts out, looking at you. You give him a confused look and he grins before finally answering.
"This is where socialites meet and mingle, perfect for learning more about Marleyan society. Either way, we'll be doing what we do best, you know what that is?" He tilts his head, waiting for you to respond. You grab your apple one last time before putting it back in the fruit bowl.
"Being shadows?" You try, even though you know it's definitely the right answer.
"Shadows. You're right." Jean nods, looking at you with a sort of admiration in his eyes.
"I really like how we can guess what each of us is thinking. Your mind works in wonderful ways, ma chรฉrie." You freeze at the sudden nickname, staring at him with wide eyes.
"Ma chรฉrie? What does that mean?" You tap your fingers on the table as you think.
"French term of endearment, have you forgotten I'm half French?" He shakes his head in feigned sadness before giving you a small wink.
"I just didn't expect you to say this at such an unexpected time." Jean suddenly takes your hand and gently caresses it with your thumb.ย
"I have to get used to being sweet with you, completely in love if I can." You smile at his words, completely forgetting the fact that Marco is standing in a room a few feet away from the two of you. Without context, he will be shocked to hear his friends flirting with each other.
"D'accord, bel homme." You grin and hold Jean's hand tightly, your fingers intertwining as you keep your hand on the table.
"Si je pouvais, je t'aurais รฉpousรฉ pour de vrai." He leans in and stares at you in a way that would make you think he is Romeo pining for Juliette.
"Hey, I'm not fluent in French. What did you just say?" You let go of his hand and place both your palms on the table, glowering at him as he looks at you with amusement.
"You will know one day, you just need to learn French." He rests his elbows on the back of his chair and blows you a kiss.
"You are so arrogant just because you speak multiple languages." You scoff and pick up the forged papers you had left on the dining table.
"Don't be ridiculous Y/N, we speak the exact same number of languages." Jean throws his head back exaggeratedly and rolls his eyes, which only annoys you more.
"But you speak French and I don't." You counter.
"But you speak Arabic and I don't." He retorts.
"As long as you're happy, mon ange." Jean calls as you open the door and slam it shut behind you, not bothering to lock it since he probably will go in the hallway to see if you have truly left and lock the door himself afterward.ย
"Okay, we're even." You push your chair and stride to the front door, your hand already reaching for the handle.
You go back to your apartment to finish packing. Having wasted at least half an hour talking with Jean, you need to hurry up so you can have time to sleep and have energy for tomorrow.
โฝโโโโโโโฅ
You wake up early, barely feeling the need to sleep, so great is the anticipation and giddiness surrounding this missionโthe most important of your entire career.
All your belongings are neatly packed in suitcases and bags, all your papers are hidden away, and the apartment looks as normal as possible. You told your neighbors the day before that you were going on vacation, but some weren't at home. You just hope word gets around and they don't call the police because of your sudden disappearance.
You need to meet Jean at Lovers' Hill, a small hill situated on the east side of Trost district.
Your agency has provided you with a Marleyan car, whose foreign license plate would attract attention, which you want to avoid at all costs.
You take your car and drive up the hill, where you find Jean leaning against a car brand you've never seen before.
You will leave your car and his here, then other agents will later bring them back to the agency's underground parking.
"Jean." You call his name as you take your suitcases and bags out of the backseat of your car.
In total, you only have two suitcases and one bag, but most of the things here are documents and toolsโclothes can be bought later.
"What is that brand? I've never seen it before." You open the trunk and put your personal belongings inside before slamming it shut, making sure it is securely closed.
"This, my dear lady, is a beautiful cherry-red Chevrolet Bel Air. I've never heard of them, but they look classy." He pats the trunk like a proud father before getting behind the wheel.
"This time, I'm driving." He shows the keys dangling from his hand before inserting them into the ignition. The engine roars to life, leaving you speechless.
You take your place in the passenger seat and admire the vehicle's beautiful interior. Plush red leather seats that recline fully, a huge dashboard with innovative features that Jean constantly observes with perplexity, while manipulating the steering wheel and controls, and consulting a manual provided by the agency to understand the function of each symbol.
"Those people are really more advanced than us." He grumbles, tossing the booklet into your glove compartment before cautiously driving down the hill at low speed.
"Shall we grab a bite when we get to Marley?" He asks as you leave Lovers' Hill. Trost district seems to shrink with every meter that separates you, your city disappearing over the horizon as you speed toward this new world you'll soon be a part of.
"Of course, to discover a culture, you have to taste its cuisine." You smile and roll down the window, letting the air of Paradis caress your hair before you leave your island for an indefinite period.
Your new apartment is on the west side of Liberio, in a small neighbourhood near the public market. You can talk to the Marleyans under the guise of asking for help or anything else; ideal for gathering information.
"I think I'm going to enjoy this mission." You tell Jean, imagining yourself strolling through the streets of Liberio, the capital of modernity. Even though this so-called capital nearly annihilated your country during the war, no one can deny its development and grandeur, incomparable to the rest of the continent.
"Me too." Jean agrees from behind the wheel, rolling down his window to breathe in one last time the air of Paradis before entering a new world full of mysteries.
You follow the road with your eyes as Jean drives to the port of Paradis, a place teeming with fishermen and tourists.
Since the end of the war, wealthy tourists have flocked to Paradis for their own pleasure, imagining that a short stay on an island is the epitome of exoticism.
Tensions between Eldians and Marleyans have eased since the signing of the peace treaty, but some animosity toward Eldians persists in Marley.
You both reach the port and drive to the end of the pontoon where a huge cruise ship stands proudly above the small catamarans and fishing boats used by the sailors.
The Titan.
You read the name engraved on a gilded plaque on the bow of the ship. Its elegant italic calligraphy testifies to the exceptional luxury of this vessel, far beyond what one usually sees.
Even though your parents were poor, they managed to save enough money for you to go on a cruise together when you were eight. However, war broke out soon after, and your childhood was cut short. You were living in Shiganshina, the first city that was invaded by the Marleyans, and lost your parents in a surprise attack, which led you to enlist in the army.ย
"That's one hell of a boat, isn't it?" Jean says to you, leaning forward to look at the top of the ship from behind his windshield, the sun blinding him and forcing him to squint a little to admire all the splendor of the behemoth before his eyes.
"For a day trip, I'm delighted to be spending it on this boat." You smile as a man in sailor clothes waves to you and points to the stern of the ship, which is used as a sort of underground parking for cars.
"I hate these enclosed spaces; if we get attacked here, escaping will be difficult." You complain as Jean cautiously drives onto the ramp and searches for an empty space.
"You're being paranoid. We'll get attacked in Marley, not here. At least not right now." He laughs when you punch him in the shoulder, indignant that he finds it so funny that you could get hurt at any moment.
"You should rethink your sense of humor. Seeking death isn't exactly what I want." You get out of the car and head toward the exit at the far end of the parking lot: a huge, white-painted steel door leading to a small iron staircase.
You ascend the stairs and almost freeze in awe upon discovering the cruise ship's majestic entrance hall.
Thick, burgundy carpets cover the space and lead to a grand wooden staircase with a platform that then splits in two to provide access to each side of the upper decks.
A grandfather clock is embedded in the platform wall, finely engraved leaves surrounding it and forming a vast pattern of foliage and flowers.
The ceiling lights are round like small suns, and a huge chandelier dominates the center of the room, its many diamonds illuminating the hall with their dazzling light.
"This place is unreal." You say, mouth open in shock, as you turn to take in the rest of the lobby. Jean stands beside you, his eyes sparkling with awe at the sight before him.
"We need the key to our suite." Jean nods toward the reception desk, positioned near a large vase filled with various flowers, adding a touch of nature to this otherwise modern space.
"Let's go." You head to the desk and Jean puts his arm around yours, your arms intertwined. He rests his palm on the small of your back in an affectionate gesture as you approach the boy sitting at the reception.
"Hello. My wife and I have booked a first-class suite. Our names are Jean and Y/N Kruger." He addresses the young, dark-haired man at the reception desk, who quickly looks up your names in his register and then gives you a small gold key decorated with engraved roses and petals.
"Shall we go see our suite?" You nod enthusiastically and follow him to the ship's upper deck. Your agency has provided you with a first-class suite so you can mingle with the Marleyan high society on board.
You head toward the staircase on your left and ascend to the third deck. The luxuriousness of the place amazes you at every turn and in every corridor.
Here you encounter people from Marley, the bourgeoisie and families of the old aristocracy, arrogant-looking rich kids, as if the whole world could bend to their every whim.
"I wish this cruise were longer." Jean complains as you reach your cabin and unlock it with the key the receptionist gave you upon your arrival in the lobby.
You step into a room of refined opulence, where the air is thick with the scent of luxury. The bed is covered with a pristine white sheet, neatly folded, and the pillows, equally white, are immaculate, without a single crease in sight.
On the edge of the bed rests a swan made of numerous small towels, accompanied by a delicate rose crafted from red towels. A letter embroidered in gold adorns the center of this rose, your names delicately written in gold.
The carpet is soft and made of red wool, while the white walls are streaked with golden highlights that shimmer under the finely crafted yellow lamps fixed to the ceiling. Seashells, starfish, and small fish, each holding a lightbulb, illuminate the room and bathe it in a golden light.
"Good heavens, I feel like a king!" exclaims Jean, a bright smile plastered on his face, as he enters the room and places his suitcase at the foot of the enormous bed.
"Can't our mission take place on this ship instead?" You sigh, opening the bathroom door. A gasp of surprise escapes you when you discover the gleaming white porcelain shower, with its built-in seats adorned with oriental motifs, reminiscent of a hammam.
The sink is shaped like a miniature bathtub, and its faucet has a handle shaped like a helm that you can turn to the right or left depending on the desired water temperature.
"Jean, even the toilet seat is classy!" You call to him, looking at the curved seat, a rug sitting at its foot with an anchor drawn in the middle, with vaguely drawn seagulls all around to represent the sea.
"I can't get up, the bed is too comfortable." You roll your eyes at his voice coming from the bedroom and step out of the bathroom to find him sunk into the mattress, arms outstretched and eyes closed.
"They serve breakfast until 9:00, hurry up, I hear they have waffles!" You kick the bed and pull Jean by the hand, forcing him to sit up.
"Okay, okay, we still have an hour." He yawns as you pull him through the door and slam it shut behind you, leading him to the buffet at the end of the hall.
Once inside, you glance around quickly for someone who looks suspicious or interesting enough to strike up a conversation with.
Since The Titan is primarily a tourist boat, it's probably full of Marleyans you can chat with. Under the guise of being a couple visiting Paradis, you and Jean will have no trouble extracting information from the wealthy.ย
You both observe the quality of service in this unfamiliar place. Officially, it's a buffet, but you now realize it's simply a restaurant. You are disappointed, because you love buffets.
"Of course they can't serve themselves." You sigh as you lead Jean to an empty table in a corner of the sunlit room, the soft, pomegranate-colored carpet muffling the sound of your footsteps.
"Welcome to their world." Jean smiles, crossing his legs and leaning back in his chair. He opens the menu and scans it smugly, chin held high and eyes fixed on the floor, the very embodiment of the upper class.
"Hello, what can I get you on this lovely morning?" A waiter immediately stops at your table when he sees you take the menu. The boy looks young, fresh out of school, and clearly Eldian, with a slight accent you recognize is from Utopia District.
"I'll have a small plate of waffles drizzled with syrup. And with that, a latte. Thank you." Jean gives him a polite smile.
The waiter then turns to you"And for you, miss?" You quickly glance at the menu and your eyes fall on the special breakfast option.
"A continental breakfast, please. But instead of orange juice, I'd prefer coffee. Black coffee, no sugar, no milk." The waiter nods and jots down your order in a small notebook attached to his apron.
"A plate of waffles, a continental breakfast. It'll be ready in a few minutes. Everything's still fresh." He smiles and rushes to the kitchen, disappearing behind the double doors.
"Another black coffee? You've really been on edge lately." Jean sighs and rests his elbow on the table, his chin tilted up so he can look at you intently.
"I can't seem to drink anything sweet these days. I promise I'll try to relax." You cross your arms and purse your lips, exchanging a silent staring contest with him.
"I'll be sure to keep an eye on you." Jean is interrupted by the arrival of the waiter. The boy is carrying all your plates on his arms and his forearms, along with your cups of coffee.
"You're really impressive." Jean compliments the young man, who crouches down to hand you your plates before you take your drinks from his forearms.
"After working for a long time, you learn tricks to be more efficient, sir." He replies, wiping a little drop of sweat from his eyebrow, a lock of curly hair clinging to his sweaty skin.
"Here. Your service is worth much more than a few cents." Jean takes a hundred-dollar bill from his wallet and offers it to the boy, who stare at him with astonishment.
"Thank you very much, sir. I hope you and your wife have a wonderful time in Marley and that your life is filled with happiness and prosperity." He takes the bill from Jean before heading to another table, light on his feet and a broad smile on his face, slipping the money into his apron pocket.
"I think you made his day." You smile at the boy sitting opposite you before taking a bite of your croissant. On the boat, the continental breakfast includes a croissant and a pain au chocolat, along with berries, yogurt, and various spreads.
"He deserves that money. I would have smashed everything in his place." Jean laughs before biting into his waffle, syrup dripping at the corner of his lips.
"Dear Godโyou big kid. You're not eating correctly, you are going to ruin our cover." You whisper to him before grabbing a napkin and dabbing the corners of his mouth, wiping away the syrup.
A faint pink blush appears on the tips of his ears and he frowns at you. "The last time I was scolded like this was when I was two."
"You're still acting like a two-year-old. Eats slowly and carefully, graciously if I may." You take his knife and fork and cut off a small piece of his waffles, showing him the technique.
"You could have just asked if you wanted to taste it, you know?" Jean teases you before imitating your actions, taking the cutlery from your hands while you stare at him with exasperation, your eyebrow knitting together.
You both stay in the restaurant until lunchtime, observing the Marley bourgeoisie and listening in on their conversations.
Watching the wealthy in their luxurious cocoon is infuriating: hearing them laugh about the war and the suffering it inflicted on Paradis, complaining about the number of homeless people crowding the streets as if it were a deliberate choice.
When the rich have problems, everyone has to pitch in, even those who can't afford to help. "Society" perpetuates itself, while in reality, it's the working class that allows the wealthy to get richer day after day.
Lunchtime arrived quickly, but you were still full from the hearty breakfast you ate this morning, keeping you from eating anything substantial enough to fill a plate.
You lean against the railing of the upper deck, gazing out at the ocean, breathing in the salty air. Water droplets lash your face as the ship's propellers cut through the waves.
"I know you said you weren't hungry, but you should try this." You turn at the sound of Jean's voice and find him standing behind you with two china plates overflowing with grilled shrimps and salad. The salad releases a sweet aroma that tickles your nostrils and makes your mouth water. You still have a little bit of place in your stomach for it.
"I can't refuse." You shrug as you sit down at a small table with picnic chairs. You take a small bite of a shrimp and the salad before gazing at Jean, wide-eyed at the exquisite delicacy of your dish.
"By the way, I overheard an elderly couple talking about the Liberio Gazette. Apparently, they're hosting a gala soon. Are you interested?" He spears a small shrimp covered in thyme with his fork and chews it slowly.
"Of course we'll go. Did you hear anything else?" You ask Jean, picking a small piece of cucumber and a tomato from your salad, savoring each bite.
"Third class sounds nice. I don't know why, but I feel suffocated among all these stuffy politicians and businessmen." He smiles, and you reciprocate immediately, already captivated by the idea.
Having grown up in the slums of Shiganshina, you knew how much you prefer living without hiding your true self from the world. When you live on the streets, you don't need a mask to walk the city; you just have to be yourself, and reputation builds itself over time, with friends and enemies alike.ย
People who live in the most modest circumstances and have a true family or loyal friends are the happiest people in the world, and you firmly believe that. No matter how rich the aristocracy becomes, it will never know the simple joys of life.ย
"Would you like to go down to the lower decks?" You propose to him. Jean immediately calls the waiter standing near the tables to clear your plates. He thanks the young man before taking your hand and leading you to your suite to change into simple clothes.
You wear a simple dark red dress with black polka dots, fitted at the waist, with black heeled boots. Jean, meanwhile, is wearing dark brown plaid trousers and a simple beige striped shirt over a white tank top.
"Let's go, milady." He takes your hand and you run down the stairs to the lower deck, where third class is located. You hear the cheerful, lively sound of the fiddle and tambourine, much more energetic than in first class.
You both enter the main hall, where about a hundred peopleโmen, women, and childrenโare dancing to the music of an impromptu band. The musicians, positioned near barrels of beer, tap their feet in rhythm to the song they're playing.
"Do you want to dance?" Jean looks at you, and you lead him onto the dance floor. You twirl around him before he places a reassuring hand on your hip. You sway from side to side, hopping from one foot to the other to the sound of the instruments.
The people around you applaud and whistle. You both clap your hands in time, and you grab the hem of your dress and lift it slightly to not step on it while you tap your heels on the uneven floor.
I love this place.
"You want to impress them?" Jean asks. You give him a puzzled look as he takes both your hands and steps away from you, your arms outstretched toward each other.ย He starts to spin in a circle, and you follow his movements, letting out a genuine laugh.
The song ends on a joyful note, and you stop dancing, your head a little dizzy as euphoria washes over you. You haven't felt so light in a long time.
"You've got rhythm, eh?" A middle-aged man says, giving you a toothless grin, a cigarette dangling from his chapped lips, and tilting his beret in greeting.
"She's the real dancer here." Jean nods and puts his arm around your waist before squeezing it lightly, sending shivers up your spine.
"I've never seen you two. Are you from Marley?" The man asks and you nod in unison. From now on, you're a couple from Marley.
"I suspected as much. As for me, I'm from the old Trost district. Just looking for work in the city, you know?" You feel a pang of empathy for this kind stranger. After the war, Paradis's economy deteriorated terribly, hitting the poorest populations of many districts particularly hard, especially those near the Rose prefecture.
"I hope you find a fulfilling life in Marley." You wish from the depths of your soul, anger coursing through your veins at the thought of the suffering your people endured at the hands of individuals like those you and Jean will soon be hunting down.
"Thank you, young lady. I hope you and your husband will have a beautiful little family with angelic faces." His words make you blush, and you feel Jean's hand tighten around your waist as a warmth spreads from his fingers to your body. The boy is just as flushed as you are.
"Have a good day, sir." Jean raises his hand in a quiet farewell before you both head back to the stairs leading to the upper decks.
"It's quite a pleasant experience." You beam as you return to your suite, careful not to cross paths with any other first-class passenger who might call security for finding third-class passengers on their deck.
"I feel refreshed, don't you?" Jean asks, slipping the key into the lock and entering your luxurious room, a world apart from the living conditions you witnessed in on the lower deck.
"I couldn't have hoped for better. They all seem so happy with what they've been given, even the bare minimum." You lie on your bed and close your eyes, smiling as you recall the dance you just shared with Jean.
"Dinner's in six hours, you can rest until then." Jean pats you on the forehead before taking off his shoes and leaning back against the headboard, a novel about Marley's history in his hand.
Without realizing it, you drifted off to sleep to the sound of Jean's voice as he read about Liberio's historic buildings, its army, and its many traditional dishes. The deep, gentle timbre of his voice calmed you like a lullaby.
"How long did I sleep?" You rub your eyes and slowly sit up in bed, still drowsy from the comfortable position you'd fallen into. You turn your head and see that Jean is still in the same position he was in a few minutes or hours ago, his book long since tossed onto the sheets and his head lolling to one side like a rag doll.
"Kirstein, wake up!" You grab his shoulders and he jumps, sitting upright before sighing out of relief when he realizes you're standing in front of him.
"Dinner is ready?" He asks as you glance at the grandfather clock in the corner of the room. Its hands are approaching 6:00 p.m., dinnertime aboard The Titan.
"Yes, get dressed. We're going now." You choose an elegant bottle-green dress that falls to mid-calf, which you pair with black heels and a small hat to cover your hairโan outfit you've seen another lady wear today.
You smooth down your dress and exit the bathroom to find Jean dressed to the nines. Crisp black dress pants with a tuxedo of the same raven black color with a jacket underneath and a tie tucked perfectly under his tuxedo.
His hair is combed back, showing his forehead which he usually hides and exposing his perfectly shaped light brown eyebrows.
"What do you think? Do I look charming enough for a dinner party?" He holds his arms out as he places cufflinks on his sleeves and you slowly clap your hands to congratulate him.
"Did you give it your all for this one, Jean boy?" You tease as you turn the doorknob of your room. You step into the hallway where you see many rich Marleyan couples heading toward the restaurant reserved to the first-class passengers.
You hook your arm through Jean's and follow the other passengers to the dining room, finding a line of people in front of the entrance and waiting to know the location of their assigned table.
"Jean and Y/N Kruger." Your fake husband tells the boy at the entrance who searches your names on a small plan of the restaurant before designating a table in the far left corner of the room and facing the entrance, the ideal place to see everyone who comes and goes during this dinner.
You nod to a waiter as you walk to your table and go sit, plush ruby โโred seats adorned with gold leaf surrounding a round table with two menus as large as the map of Paradis.
"The ratatouille looks good. I think I'll have some braised chicken with it." He nods at the menu while you look at yours, unsettled by the numerous options of food you can eat.
"Then I'll have the seafood platter. Fried shrimp and calamari with tartar sauce. Maybe a mocktail with this." You tap your fingers on the table thoughtfully.
You've had a knot in your stomach since this morning, so you're avoiding heavy red meat and opting for light seafood that won't aggravate the feeling.
You place the menus on the table and, just like this morning, a waiter approaches immediately after you make your choice.
"Good evening. Have you decided?" The blond young man asks with a wide smile, a napkin draped over his forearm and a notebook tucked into his apron.
"Ladies first." Jean bows his head and you roll your eyes at him even if a small smile is fighting to appear on your face.
"I'll have the seafood platter and a pineapple-mango mocktail." He nods, scribbling your order in his small notebook before turning to Jean.
"For me, it'll be a beef steak with barbecue sauce, a small plate of fries, and ratatouille. And a small glass of red wine, please." The waiter bites his bottom lip nervously as he tries to recall all the dishes you ordered, before writing your order down from memory.
"Do you really have the stomach to eat all of that?" You tilt your head as Jean relaxes in his seat, looking at the other tables.
"We can always share. Try to eat well, Y/N. The mission starts tomorrow." He playfully taps your fingers before lifting your chin so you look at him, giving you a radiant smile.
"I'll have a few bites of your food and some fries." You roll your eyes and wait for your order, watching people enter the restaurant in expensive clothes and even more expensive jewelry and accessories.
The waiter arrives a few minutes later, his arms laden with plates whose aromas are so enticing they make your head spin.
The steam rising from your seafood smells absolutely delicious, and the small amount of pepper scattered in your plate gives your food a special flavor as you dip your calamari rings into the tartar sauce.
The steak Jean ordered is even more exquisite; you cut into the thick meat before chewing it effortlessly, the flesh literally melting in your mouth.
You steal a few of his fries, but he places his plate between you two so you can eat at your leisure and he offers you a spoon to enjoy the ratatouille with him, which tastes even better than you imagined.
Your mother used to make you ratatouille when you were little, before the war took her away from you, before you discovered the cruelty of the world.
And yet, however cruel it may be, the world remains beautiful.
As you dine, the sound of trumpets and the familiar strains of jazz fill the room. Suddenly, a small group of musicians appears on a platform, all smiles and laughter, as they begin to play their instruments.
"I feel like I'm in a cabaret." You laugh, moving your head to the energetic rhythm of the saxophone.
However, as cheerful and pleasant as this small orchestra may seem, nothing can compare to the genuine joy you felt listening to the third-class musicians.
Every single person in this room is hiding behind a mask.
The evening ended with a long note of saxophone and tuba before the waiters cleared the tables and each returned to their suite.
The ship would reach the Marleyan coast at dawn, thus bringing to a close this short trip that you had thoroughly enjoyed.
Jean opens the door to your cabin and you place your shoes by the entrance. He unbuttons his shirt and put on a simple cotton t-shirt, then goes to the bathroom to brush his teeth and perform his usual pre-bedtime routine.
While Jean was in the bathroom, you took off your robe and put on your purple pajamas shirt and matching wide-legged pantsโthe most comfortable pajamas you owned, found in the men's section of a small shop in the center of the Trost district.
Jean finally walks out of the bathroom after a few minutes, and you take his place. You brush your teeth and carefully remove your makeup, wiping away any traces of lipstick or blush you might have missed.
You turn off the light and stop abruptly, discovering Jean already comfortably settled under the silk sheets, arms behind his head, gazing into space.
"Do you want me to sleep on the floor?" He asks seriously, ready to do it if you feel uncomfortable sleeping in the same bed as him. Of course you don't mind sleeping next to him, you've shared the same bed countless times during the war; you're not going to let him sleep on the floor now.
"You won't need to." You smile and lift the covers before slipping underneath them, your knee pressed against his, as you stare at the ceiling.
"Today marks the beginning of our mission, right?" Jean murmurs, as if afraid of being overheard. You nod, feeling your muscles tense at the thought of all the things this mission might reveal.ย
The world will change; you know it. Nothing will be the same when you return to Paradis.
"We'll find the culprits, we've never failed." You assure him before turning to face him, your eyes fixed on his face, until he looks up to meet your gaze.
"Go to sleep for now. You need it." Before you can reply, Jean grabs the back of your head and pulls you to his chest, placing your face right above his heart and running his fingers through your hair like a massage to make you fall asleep.
"Good night." Your voice comes out muffled but Jean somehow understands it, to which he responds with a single sentence, two words that seem to carry so much meaning when they come out of his mouth.
"Sweet dreams."

You wake up to the delicious aroma of French toast, chocolate, and fruits. You sit up and stretch, searching for the source of the fragrance, before finding it a few meters away from you.
Jean is sitting at a small table in the sitting area of โโyour suite. The table is covered with an impressive array of white, milk, and dark chocolate spreads of all kinds, strawberries, bananas, syrup, butter, and small pieces of cheese.
"I called room service. The ship should dock in about an hour." He announces. You get up and walk straight over to him, smoothing your hair as best you can before grabbing a slice of French toast and shoving it into your mouth.
"Hey, at least try the toppings! I paid double for the spreads!" He exclaims indignantly before taking a slice of toast, spreading milk chocolate on it, adding strawberries, placing it on a small porcelain plate decorated with leaves and berries, and handing it to you.
"That's how you eat French toast." He stares straight into your eyes, but you look away, turning your head toward the porthole. From there, you see the first rosy reflections of the rising sun, the sea shimmering in its soft light, and the orange and pink hues reflecting back toward the ship.
"I'm going to miss the food, that's for sure." You roll your eyes as you savor a buttered slice of bread drizzled with syrup. The exquisite flavor melts caresses your taste buds and wakes you up.
"You can always find five-star restaurants in Marley." Jean shrugs before biting into two slices of toast at once, one covered in white chocolate, the other plain except for a small square of butter melting slowly on it.
"Attention all passengers, The Titan will arrive at the port of Liberio in thirty minutes. Prepare your luggage and proceed to the decks or the underground parking. Disembarkation will begin in 25 minutes." The captain's voice booms throughout the ship via the corridor loudspeakers.
"I'm going to wash my hands and pack my bags. It won't take long, my clothes haven't left my suitcase at all." You go to the bathroom and slip into a light green dress with a daisy pattern, a white hat, and matching sparkly white shoes.
"You look like a real rich lady." Jean whistles as you begin packing. He gets up, pats his shirt to remove imaginary dust, and then puts on his brown tuxedo.
"Is everything in our suitcases? Have we forgotten anything?" He looks around and takes the condiment packets offered by the ship's company. You then leave the cabin and head to the underground parking where your car is waiting. However, you stop him before he can reach the staircase.
"I want to see the coast. We still have ten minutes before disembarkation." You tug at his sleeve, and he shakes his head slightly before muttering under his breath and heading up to the upper deck instead.
A small group is already gathered at the railing, gazing out at the ocean and the boats that seem to grow larger as you approach.
From up here, Liberio appears endless, stretching as far as the eye can see, with its immense buildings and its port that runs along the entire coastline, the scenery leaving you speechless. Fishermen, their nets laden with fish, wave at you from their boats.ย
You gaze at the city like a child in a candy store, but your reverie is interrupted by the captain's voice over the loudspeakers. "Disembarkation in five minutes. Please proceed to the decks or the parking."
"We can go." You say to Jean, descending the steep steps that lead to the parking. You pass the entrance hall and its sculpted staircase, appearing even more polished than yesterday.
"They really take good care of this ship." You look at the staircase with a touch of nostalgia. The short stay aboard The Titan has truly made you happy.
You and Jean finally reach the underground parking and search for your car. The other people parked there are already in their vehicles, their bags and suitcases neatly stowed in the trunk or on the back seat.
You weave your way through the cars and find yours in the second row. You happily head toward your car, swinging your bag happily.
Jean, ever the perfect husband, agrees to carry the rest of your luggage.
He unlocks the doors and you get in, patiently waiting for the captain to announce you finally reached the port of Liberio.
Jean places your bags and other belongings in the trunk before closing the door and getting behind the wheel. Excitement tingles at your fingertips at the thought of discovering this new world with him.
Even though you've been an agent for a long time, all your missions have taken place within Eldian territory, never abroad, and certainly not in Marley.
"Ladies and gentlemen, our ship has completed its short journey and is now in the port of Liberio. Disembarkation will begin in a few moments." The massive ramp you drove on yesterday descends little by little, letting in all the outside light and blinding you for a few seconds.
The cars begin to roll slowly toward the entrance, going over a small bump and moving from left to right slightly as they roll down the unstable ramp.
Quickly, it's Jean's turn to drive out of the parking. You wipe your hands on your knees as he accelerates and speeds out of the ship, forcing curious passersby to stop and watch.
"We're not in a race, slow down!" You grip the armrest and shout as Jean speeds across the port, laughing like a maniac as his car weaves through fishermen and pedestrians.
"WOO-HOO, watch us, Marley!" Jean laughs before slamming on the brakes as the cops appear around the corner. He finally starts driving like a model citizen who isn't seeking to crash into a tree.
"You crazy maniac, did you want to get us caught from the very first minute?" You slap him on the shoulder, exasperated by his childish behaviour.
"I was testing the car's speed. Now we know we can make a quick getaway if there's any trouble." He gives you a wink before shrugging, as if that were the best argument in the world.
"Shut up and go to the apartment." You bark out an order, crossing your arms and staring out the window, occasionally casting him a disapproving glance to make sure he doesn't suddenly press his foot on the accelerator.
The streets of Marley are very different from those of Paradis, the contrast even more striking in broad daylight.
While Paradis has cobblestone streets, those of Marley are covered in a material you identify as asphalt, if your memory serves you right. Tall lampposts tower over the crowd, flowers hanging from them and scattering their petals onto the concrete sidewalks, where they are eventually crushed by pedestrians.
Near the port, fishermen try to sell their daily catch: fish, octopus, shrimp, and other kinds of seafood freshly caught this morning. Long lines form in front of their stands to buy their products.
Everything is much more modern and developed than in Paradis. Even the clothes seem to belong to another era: the men wear shirts without suits, leather jackets with tight blue jeans, and shirts tucked into their pants. The women, for their part, wear skirts that stop at the knee instead of the usual mid-calf length.
"I feel like I'm in the future." You tell Jean, gazing out the window at the tall buildings surrounding the bustling neighbourhoods. The skyscrapers stretch toward the sky, as if they could touch the sun, dominating the entire city.
Jean drives past the market and head to a small apartment complex nestled beside a green space, with a small garden on its left while the street is on its right; the house is standing between nature and modernity. It is made of brown brick, undecorated, but clean enough to be elegant.
You get out of the car, and he opens the trunk to take your bags and suitcases. He carries them all as you walk to the entrance. The lobby is carpeted, and the walls are painted a brilliant, snow-white, with small yellow lamps casting shadows across them.
You stop on the third floor of the building, in front of a slightly scratched wooden door. The landlord told you that stray cats take refuge there and sometimes scratch at the doors for food.
You take the keys out of your pocket and turn them in the lock, opening the door and feeling a breath of fresh air fill your lungs.
Your apartment, which you share with Jean, is the same size as yours in Paradis; only the layout has changed.
Light beige wallpaper with blue lilies and purple lavender covers all the walls. The floor is parquet, with long, polished planks.
In one corner of the house is a kitchen twice the size of yours back in Paradis. The cupboards are painted with flawlessly finished wood details, and the white laminate countertop is big enough to be used as a table.
A small hallway to the right of the front door leads to two rooms: one is probably the bathroom and the other the bedroom. A long rectangular dining table sits near two windows overlooking the crowded street below and offering an unobstructed view of the city.
Ackerman really found the perfect spot.
"Shall we go to the bedroom?" Jean bows and gestures toward the rooms at the end of the hall. You smile at him before heading for the door on the left, which you hope is the bedroom.
You enter a small, elegant room with light blue walls. A window offers a view of the streets and rooftops of Liberio, while laurel vines climb the window frame.
In the middle of the room stands a huge bed, bare of sheets, supported only by a wooden frame and a spring mattress. A bulge suggests that one of the springs is about to break.
"It could have been better, but it's still alright." Jean shrugs before placing your luggage on the midnight-blue carpet at the foot of the bed.
"Which department do you think they'll send you to?" You ask him as he opens your first suitcase and empties it onto the bed.
"Probably literature or politics." He replies, opening the small doors of a navy blue closet hidden behind a coat rack. There are three compartments and a larger one for hanging clothes; you'll figure out how to divide them between the two of you later.
"You know, Y/N, you should be in charge of the weather." You can tell he's going to tell a joke just by the way he is looking at you with a sly grin.
"Why?" You tilt your head and watch him sit on the edge of the bed, amusement shining in his eyes.
"Because you're stormy most of the time." He lets out a thunderous laugh at his own joke. In response, you grab a pillow from the bed and hurl it at his face.
"We have to go to the office, stop acting like an idiot." You snap at him and head straight for the front door, ready to leave without him.
"Wait for me, I'm sorry!" Jean runs after you and grabs your wrist, pouting so you'll take pity on him. You glare at him before your expression softens, unable to stay angry for long.
"Buy me lunch and I'll consider forgiving you." He accepts without hesitation then locks the door behind him as you descend the stairs to your building's parking.
"From what we saw, Liberio's newspaper is about a fifteen-minute walk from here. Are you sure you don't want to take the car?" Jean asks as you head toward the busy street that runs alongside your building.
"We need to observe; we can do this better on foot." You tug at his sleeve and pull him away from the car, blending into the crowd who is shopping and buying food from nearby stores and food stalls.
As you walk by a clothing store, you see people paying for their articles with small cards rather than bills or coins, something you've never seen in Paradis.
"They are much more advanced than us." You whisper to Jean as you walk on the sidewalk, your eyes fixed on the modern cars whizzing by.
You wander through numerous streets and almost get lost when you arrive at the main square, with its many intersecting avenues. Yet, you easily find your way around the streets of Liberio.
In twenty minutes, you find the newspaper building, an immense gray marble structure with multiple windows and topped by an antenna. At the entrance, large revolving glass doors, edged in gold, reveal a constant flow of people who walk in and out of the building.
On the fourth floor, just above a row of windows, a long rectangle displays the building's name: The Liberio Gazette.
The white letters stand out against the rectangle's navy blue background, carefully painted and perfectly aligned. A small feather is painted beside the last "e" in "Gazette."
You and Jean turn to each other, your chests heaving up and down. Your mission officially begins now; the fate of Paradis rests in your hands.
You step through the revolving doors and into a place that looks more like a luxury bank than a newspaper office. The vaulted ceilings are lined with gold, supported by white Greek columns. At the far end of the lobby stands an immaculate black desk. The glossy grey tiled floor reflects every movement, polished to the highest degree.
Employees rush past you, notepads or microphones in hand, closely followed by a cameraman. They're all hurrying for the exit to get the exclusive.
"Where's the boss's office?" You ask Jean, scanning the lobby. You see a fountain on the right, next to a huge floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the street. The former is surrounded by potted plants that create the illusion of a small park.
Is this a city or a newspaper?
"Uh... if I read correctly, it's on the second floor." Jean points to a large board listing the names of the departments and offices, along with their locations. You nod and follow him to the elevator near the reception desk.
You wipe your sweaty palms on your skirt and notice Jean tugging at his suit collar, as if he were choking. The tension in the elevator is palpable, the anxieties of the start of your mission.
You are in enemy territory now.
You arrive on the second floor and find the door of the office wide open. A tall man stands behind it, his head shaved and his eyes ringed with dark circles; he looks more like a general than an editor-in-chief.
Noticing your presence and Jean's in the doorway, he looks up and gives you a small smile. "Ah, you must be Jean and Y/N Kruger. I have read your profiles and I am delighted to welcome you on our team."
Relieved by his warm welcome, you smile and enter his office, its walls covered with maps, articles, and documents.
"You're married, aren't you? We don't see many couples around here." Jean smiles slightly at this statement before putting his arm around your waist.
"Yes, we wanted to work in the same field, as we share almost the same passions." You nod enthusiastically at his words and rest your head lightly on Jean's shoulder.
"My name is Theo Magath. I run this office like a barracks. I was commander of the 19th Regiment, but I had to retire because of a leg injury inflicted by those filthy Eldians." You pale at the contempt he displays for your people. You wouldn't even dare imagine his reaction if he discovered that two former Eldian soldiers were standing before him.
"Anyway, for now, you don't have to do anything since you're starting tomorrow in a department that will be assigned to you. Go to the editing department; there's a woman with black hair who will show you around." He gestures to your right, and you bow slightly before walking in the direction he's pointing.
"He seems... nice." Jean whispers to you as an employee rushes past, carrying two boxes. You shrug and scan the corridors, memorizing the layout in case you need to escape this place in the future.
As you approach the editing room, you hear two feminine voices arguing. You step closer and a man's voice joins themโa smug, irritating voice that really gets on your nerves even if you don't know who it belongs to.
"Please, Pieck, we absolutely need to add this info; it's crucial!" A high-pitched voice calls out, pleading resonating in its tone.
"How many times do I have to tell you? Heartbreak and breakups aren't news!" An irritated voice retorts harshly. You can almost picture the young woman rolling her eyes.
"Pieck's right. Go back to your desk and find some real news, not the kind of small talk you have over tea and biscuits." The male voice you heard earlier chimes in, arrogance and mockery dripping from it.
"Shut up, pork. This is real news!" Anger rises, and you're eager to know what will happen next, but you decide it's best to intervene to ease the tense atmosphere residing in the editing room.
"They seem to love each other, don't they?" You turn to Jean, who lowers his head to stifle his laughter.
"We'll have no trouble creating affinities, I can feel it." He pulls you by the arm and intertwines his with yours, then you enter the room, finding yourself alone with the three voices you heard, to whom you can now give a face.
Grey carpeting covers the entire room, and the white marble wall has three small windows to which rectangular flowerpots are attached. A good dozen printers are scattered around, each one placed next to a desk. Even in your wildest dreams, you would never have imagined seeing so many together in the same place.
"Oh..." mutters a blond boy with slicked-back hair when he notices you. He glances at the dark-haired girl, silently asking if she's the one who brought you here.
"I'm Hitch Dreyse, and you are...?" A light brown-haired girl who was the one begging to add broken hearts in the newspaper earlier asks, though her question seems primarily directed at Jean, whom she gazes at with stars in her eyes.
"Your new coworkers. I'm Y/N Kruger, and this is my husband, Jean Kruger." "You smile as you watch her smile fade, before it turns into a smirk, an idea crossing her mind.
She's up to no good.
"Ah yes, I remember, Magath asked me to show you around." The dark-haired girl slaps a hand to her forehead before smiling to you.
"I'm Pieck Finger, this is Porco Galliard, and... she's already introduced herself." She gestures at herself and her two coworkers before glaring at Hitch, who immediately returns the look, causing a wave of tension to ripple through the room, as if a storm were brewing nearby.
"It's really cold here, haha." Jean tries to lighten the mood with his joke, but the only one who seems to find it funny is Hitch.
"Pleased to meet you, Jean." Porco takes a step toward him and shakes his hand firmly, as if he's just accepted a business meeting.
Jean, still as sociable as ever, places his hand on Porco's and squeezes it twice as hard, a slight grimace of pain creeping across the right side of the latter's face.
"The pleasure is all mine." Jean bows slightly out of respect. Porco freezes and stares at his palm, his eyebrows furrowed, thoughtful. Jean freezes too and gives you a brief, worried look.
"Good heavens, your hands are really calloused. The war made you tough, didn't it?" He lets out a chuckle.
"Which regiment were you in?" Porco tilts his head and lets go of Jean's hand to cross his arms over his chest as he waits for an answer.
This question sets off alarm bells in your head, at the same time as in Jean's. You've read documents about the Marleyan army and even spent time with Ackerman checking the numbers of regiments the nation created during the war, but one wrong answer and Porco might consult his superiors only to never find your names on the lists.
You fear that Jean will name the regiment in which Porco served, but he will perfectly remember his comrades and will know that Jean was not part of it, and your cover will be compromised on the spot.
You and Jean exchange a furtive glance while Porco and the others stare at you. You must quickly find an answer that will allay suspicions, an answer that will prevent him from consulting the lists.
At that precise moment, you and him are thinking the same thing, sharing the same thought to one another with your eyes.
Putain de merde.

I. The Marleyan Threat
TW: Gore, violence, and mentions of blood.
โฝโโโโโโโฅ
Stohess District, October 1947
Each mission is divided into three parts.
1- Gather intel.
2- Achieve your objective.
3- Leave enemy territory.
Normally, you have no difficulty in completing these three steps. However today, due to a lack of attention, you were caught red-handed by your enemy while you were stealing his documents, so here you are, foot pressed on the accelerator of an Alfa Romeo 6C you stole this morning while five cars full of armed men are following you closely at full-speed.
You quickly turn your head to check if the briefcase containing all the information on the location of their drug production warehouses is securely held in place by the rear passenger's seatbelt. You absolutely must keep it with you; your entire mission depends on it.
You turn sharply to the right and into a small alleyway to lose your pursuers. The cobblestones make your car jolt with every turn of its wheels, causing you to bump into ceramic pots along the way. The old lady who lives here will be furious when she'll see her plants scattered across the street.
Your tires make a loud screeching noise as you slam on the brakes to avoid hitting a civilian and stop right in the middle of the public square. Shocked passersby stare at your car with wide eyes and confused expressions while you desperately search for an escape route.
Did I finally get rid of them?
[Play Beat It by Michael Jackson]
Your thoughts are interrupted when three cars appear right behind you. At least two men from each car stick their heads out the window and point a gun at you, almost making you laugh at their ridiculous attempts to scare you. Their faces are scowling and their eyes are bloodshot as they stare at you with hatred.
"Are they going to shoot me in front of so many peoโ?" You don't even have time to finish your sentence before the sound of gunfire rings through the air, bullets dangerously grazing your side mirrors.
I guess that's an answer.
Your rear windshield shatters into a thousand pieces when three bullets hit it, the shards of glass falling directly onto the briefcase.
Stray bullets end up in the walls of the apartment buildings and shops surrounding the public square. The crowd around you runs in all directions in a chorus of curses and screams of terror, everyone running for their lives.
"DO THEY THINK THEY'RE IN A SHOOTING GALLERY?!" You yell, gripping the steering wheel tightly and putting your foot back on the accelerator, the roar of your engine echoing through the now-empty space.
Your car moves forward a few meters before you change your mind and place your foot on the clutch pedal then push the gear lever into reverse by moving it to the right and down before slowly releasing the clutch pedal as you start driving backwards.
You turn the steering wheel to the left and knock over a fruit stand. Apples and oranges roll on the ground and get crushed by the wheels of your car as you turn into a small street that leads directly to the main road.
You put the gear lever back into its initial position and press on the accelerator as you hear someone shouting orders in the distance: these men will catch up to you in a few minutes at the latest. You need to leave this district as soon as possible before things take a turn for the worse.ย
The two cars that had disappeared from your field of vision stop right in front of you and block your path. You completely forgot about them and you curse at the rookie mistake you just madeโyou must always check your surroundings. You swerve into a narrow alley, your hands turning the steering wheel so hard you nearly rip it off.
Your side mirrors collide with the walls of houses and fall to the ground as you speed toward the main road. You must leave this maze of alleys if you don't want to end up cornered like an animal during a hunt.
"I'm going to end up in the river if this continues." You exhale, throwing a panicked glance in your rearview mirror, and see the three cars you left behind in the public square following you once again.
"Okay, I have no choice." You let out a small laugh and pull your gun from your coat pocket. You load it in a flash and slow down to pull alongside the vehicles behind you.
I just need to puncture one tire on each car and I'll be able to leave without any problems.
You take a deep breath as a black Cadillac pulls up right next to you, the men inside almost exploding with anger, yelling inaudible insults in your direction.
"How vulgar! That's no way to speak to a woman." You sneer and point your weapon at the nearest tire, closing one eye to aim with precision.
You shoot twice and grin as you hear the rubber material make a popping sound and deflate immediately, the car slowing down abruptly after this action.
Unfortunately, while you were focused on that Cadillac, another car appeared on your left. A single man is behind the wheel, and he crashes into your car head-onโat least not enough to inflict real damage.
You abruptly swerve to the right to avoid his attack, in case he was trying to puncture your tires with spike strips; a clever tactic, but one you know all too well.
You turn around and fire straight through the center of his windshield, hitting him squarely in the head. Before you look back at the road, you see his shattered brains on the back of his seat and blood spattering all over the front of his car, staining the windows a dark red as he bleeds out. His skull is fractured by the force of the impact and shards of glass are embedded in his eyes, lodged deep in his orbs.
Two other Cadillacs suddenly appear on either side and gradually approach your car.
They're sandwiching me.
This strategy could have two possible outcomes, and neither is favorable to you. First, they could shoot at you simultaneously, and your chances of dodging two bullets coming from opposite directions are virtually nil. Second, you could jump out of your car to avoid being caught, but you would then be forced to run on foot, pursued by the most powerful cars of the time, capable of reaching 160 km/h.
What do I do?!
Between unavoidable death and the slight chance to live, you choose the second option.
You take a look at the briefcase sitting in the backseat and reach out your hand to grab it, ready to jump out of the driver's door. The most important is to protect it; even at the risk of your life, you'll find a way to bring it to the agency.
You put your hand on the door handle, ready to jump out of your car and abandon it, but the sound of gunshots rings in your ears, forcing you to turn your attention back on the road.
A blood-curdling silence, lasting a few milliseconds only, forms between each gunshot fired from a weapon in the distance.
With each gunshot, a man from the surrounding cars slumps in his seat, blood flowing from his head or chest depending on where the bullet hits him.
Sniper. Could it be...?
You accelerate to avoid a collision, because there are no longer any drivers to regulate the speed of the vehicles, and you dodge the Cadillacs that end up in the trees or in the river. You look up at the tall buildings that line the main road.
How did he...?
You would recognize that light brown mullet haircut anywhere: it's Jean Kirstein. He's wearing a black mask that covers half his face and an olive green hat.
He is lying on his stomach, his hands gripping a sniper rifle. He greets you by tilting his hat, and you can almost see the mocking smile that forms on his face even from this distance.
Of course, now he won't stop repeating for weeks how he saved your life on a mission, which seems to be his favorite pastime every time you return to HQ after completing a task.
This bastard is always sent as backup in case something goes wrong during your missions, but you won't deny it, this time his presence was more than welcome.
"I'll buy you a coffee when we get back to the agency." You tell him from afar, certain that he can hear your voice saying this exact sentence in his head, just like many times before.
You roll your eyes at your own words, but smile gently as you turn right and drive down the highway toward Trost district, ready to bring the evidence you found to Levi Ackerman, your handler.
โฝโโโโโโโฅ
SSOP Headquarters, Trost District
The two hour drive to your agency passed by in a blur, mostly consisting of nervous glances over your shoulder and looks around the countryside farmlands and barns in case the enemy sent their troops after you and they were hiding among the trees and bushes.
You push open the double glass doors leading to the entrance hall of the headquarters and are greeted by your friends Sasha and Connie, who are arguing over who deserves the last churro in the pink box they're both holding.
"Y/N!" The girl yells when she sees you, snatching the snack from Connie's hands and shoving it straight into her mouth while she runs toward you with her arms wide open.
She pulls you into a warm embrace, pressing her chin into the hollow of your neck, at the junction of your shoulder, while swaying from one foot to the other, forcing you to follow her movement.
"Well done, you have the briefcase with you." She steps back and wipes the churro crumbs off your shoulder while observing with keen interest the object you're holding in your hand.
"Yes, two weeks of hard work and I finally made it home. It's so good to be back." You smile from ear to ear, an exhausted smile that reflects all the emotional roller coasters you've experienced over a fortnight.
Exertion and demotivation were your worst enemies, gnawing at you during the night in the shabby inn where you were staying, while you stared at the stained and moth-eaten curtains.
And yet, here you are, providing crucial information for your country. All your work has paid off, just like how it's always been for the past five years.
"I have to go hand this in to Ackerman now, wish me luck." You wince as you look up at the third floor where your handler's office is located.
This man is known for his brutality and rudeness, but he is the strongest man you have ever known. During the war, he saved you and your comrades countless times, and he personally selected you to join the agency after the Battle of Shiganshina. Your gratitude and respect for him are unconditional.
"He won't insult you, since you're bringing him important documents. Trust me, I know what makes him angry." Connie says as you climb the black wooden staircase on your right.
He's an informant, quite skilled at his job, even if he sometimes gives out more information than requested. Last time, Levi Ackerman summoned him to his office to get information on a suspect he was looking for, and Connie ended up telling him about the criminal's love life and numerous heartbreaks.
Needless to say, your shaved-headed friend ran out of Levi's office as soon as he realized his mistake, clutching his head to protect himself as a swarm of pens and pencils chased him through the open door, hitting him in the back as he ran down the stairs in terror.
You lean on the glass railing, your feet heavy with each step that brings you closer to the third floor. As you climb the spiral staircase, you greet your colleagues whom you haven't seen for two weeks.
Most of them are looking at you with concern, and you don't even want to imagine how exhausted you must look. You haven't slept a wink for three nights, too busy devising a plan to steal the briefcase you're holding right now.
I'll get this over with quickly then go sleep in my apartment.
You stop in front of a huge black oak door while you read the glittering name inlaid in a golden plaque just above the peephole.
Levi Ackerman.
You take a deep breath to settle your nerves then knock twice, your knuckles rattling against the wood as you hear someone shuffling toward the door.
"L/N, come in." The short, dark-haired man greets you, nodding at the plush black leather armchair behind him, inviting you to sit down.
"Good to see you, sir." You smile and take a seat in front of his desk, taking a few seconds to observe the room to look for any new additions or rearrangements.
Nothing new; Ackerman is still the same man. His office is almost entirely black, not a single speck of dust can be seen in the air or on the furniture.
You hear the familiar pitter-patter of the rain and look at the giant floor-to-ceiling windows installed behind his desk, the three panels illuminating the room and giving you an unobstructed view of the city below.
"You came back without a single scratch, I'm impressed." He sits in his black swivel chair, his face impassive as always, but a slight glimmer of relief can be seen in his eyes.
"What's in this briefcase?" He asks, leaning closer to the item as you place it on his desk, inviting him to take a closer look.
"It contains information regarding the location of their drug production warehouses, sir." You click on the two latches and open it, revealing the piles of papers and maps hidden inside.
"I'm going to consider a promotion for you, agent." Ackerman takes the maps laid out atop the papers and examines them methodically, his sense of efficiency as sharp as ever.
"Have you spoken with Kirstein?" He places the sketches in his drawer, locks it carefully, then examines the rest of the files.
"I didn't have time to speak to him, sir." You nod apologetically, glancing at the various sketches of buildings and drug experiments scribbled on yellowed paper.
This has been going on for a long time, hasn't it?
"He will be here soon, if I'm not mistaken." Your handler replies, slamming the briefcase shut before getting up from his chair.
"You're dismissed. You can go and rest in your apartment and I will call you if we need anything. Good work as always, L/N." You smile at his words and stand up, walking toward the massive oak door. You turn the brass doorknob as calmly as possible before leaving with a joyful step, grinning from ear to ear, a deep sense of pride coursing throughout your body.
You walk out of the agency, your step lighter than when you arrived, and return to your apartment under a drizzle, the icy wind of the season penetrating under your coat and making you shiver at every turn you take in the narrow streets of the district.
You open the door of your building roughly, making it slam against the red brick wall covered in vines. You run up the stairs, eager to collapse on your bed to sleep as long as you want without being disturbed.
You smile at the prospect, already imagining yourself snuggled under your sheets, resting your head on your soft pillow as you put on your sleep mask to help you drift into a deep slumber.
You fumble with your keys as you open the front door of your apartment, take off your boots, then run to your sofa, too tired to reach your bedroom. However, you collapse onto the plush carpet, your strength failing you at the last moment right before you could sit on your couch.
"I'm so tired." You sigh, opening your arms wide and rolling onto your back to sleep comfortably. You close your eyes and place your arm under your head like a pillow, a feeling of drowsiness washing over you and inviting you to fall asleep immediately.
A series of knocks on your front door wakes you up with a start and you quickly get up from the carpet to see who has the worst timing in the entire universe and beyond to disturb you at such a time.
"Be polite, whoever this is, they didn't know you were asleep." You grab the door handle and twist it roughly, opening the door with such force that the hinges are almost ripped off. You grit your teeth as you see Jean Kirstein standing before you, his usual smug smile plastered on his face, looking at you with an excessively cheerful expression.
"What do you want, Kirstein?" You snap at him, smoothing down your dark red skirt to make sure you look at least somewhat presentable. You tighten your knuckles around the knob, ready to slam the door in his face at any moment.
"I'm not even getting a thank you for saving your life? Unbelievable, what ingratitude!" He frowns, placing a hand on his heart as he winces in feigned sadness before slightly raising his eyes to see if you're reacting to his terrible acting.
"Not even a little smile?" He lowers his head in disappointment before straightening up. You glimpse the olive green hat he was wearing in Stohess, tucked into the front pocket of his dark brown suit.
You cross your arms, without giving him an answer to his question, and he interprets this as a sign that he is invited into your apartment.
His elbow brushes against yours as he walks past you. He reaches your living room in three strides then plops down on your couch, the springs creaking under his weight. His long legs are stretched out in front of him, and he places his arm behind his head, letting it fall back to look at you still standing in the doorway.
"If you're keeping your shoes on, it means you won't be here for more than a minute. You say, glancing at his polished coffee-brown dress shoes.
"That won't be a problem at all." He replies, kicking off both shoes and sending them flying across the living room. "I'll be here for a while. We have a lot of things to say to each other, don't we?" He gestures for you to join him on the couch, an infuriating smirk appearing on the corners of his lips as you slam your door shut.
"I've been in Stohess for two weeks, I suppose I must be tired from working so intensely without any breaks, don't you think?" You put your hands on your hips and give him a cold glare as he whistles without a care in the world, observing your small kitchen in the corner.
"Well, I was there for a week and had to stay in a shabby tavern because Ackerman refuses to increase his agents' accommodation budget. It was truly a horrible experience." He sighs, staring at the ceiling as if what he went through was a thousand times worse than the war you fought in years ago.
"Your problem is you think that every place will be a five star hotel when it's not. Learn to adapt to your environment and stop complaining, life isn't always easy." You seethe with rage; his pretentious, uptown boy attitude is annoying you far more than you'd care to admit.
"Oh come on, Y/N. I slept in a barn with you once, remember?" You sit down next to him, your knee touching his as he looks at you with his piercing light brown eyes.
"We were in the countryside, and I threatened to strangle you with straw if you dared to complain." You snicker, leaning your back against the sofa as Jean puts his arm around your shoulders.
"It still counts. I didn't behave like a bratty kid." He smiles, proud of his supposedly mature behaviour.
"It happened three years ago, and since then it's only gotten worse." Exasperated, you rest your head on his shoulder and let out a loud sigh to make him understand how irritating he is.
Wait a second..
An idea pops into your head and you need to act on it immediately. You jump up from the sofa and rush to your kitchen, returning with a box of white fudge cookies and a glass of milk.
"Here, a token of my gratitude." You place the box on your coffee table and walk away, leaving Jean alone on the couch as you head to your room.
"Where exactly are you going?" He grabs your wrist, his touch gentle but firm enough to hold you properly and prevent you from easily escaping.
"I'm going to sleep." You reply, trying not to lose your temper and refraining from responding sharply as you feel your eyelids slowly closing.
"That's not how a host should behave. You should sit down and eat those biscuits with me, no?" He rests his elbows on his knees, his chin on his palms as he looks you up and down with a mischievous grin, proud of his attempts to make you lose your composure.
"Sit." He taps the empty place where you were sitting a few minutes ago and you give in, telling yourself that you'll just spend a few minutes telling him about your mission in Stohess before showing him the door.
"See? You can be a good girl when you want to."ย Jean smiles at you then unbuttons his trench coat, revealing the dark brown suit jacket he's wearing underneath, while he waits for you to open the box of white fudge cookies you brought.
You look away, trying in vain to hide the blush rising to your cheeks, terribly flushed by the term of endearment he's just given you.
"So, how did it feel to track down drug dealers?" Jean queries as you open the box of biscuits and take one, dipping it in the glass of milk placed next to it.
"It was rather exhausting. I spent days hiding in the slums of Stohess and being approached by uncanny strangers in bars." You take a bite of your cookie and turn to him, your gaze fixed on his eyes.
"How did you know I would be on the main road?" Jean eats two cookies at the same time when you finish your question and you wait for him to swallow them before poking him in the chest, waiting for an answer.
"I know you should escape via the main road to reach the highway. The secondary streets end at an intersection, and those guys would definitely follow you there because you wouldn't have the heart to kill them in front of civilians." He answers, taking a paper napkin from your wooden tissue box to wipe the biscuit crumbs from the corner of his mouth.
"You know me well. I just hope things will calm down for a while; I'm exhausted. I'd rather sleep like Snow White for a few days." You get up from the couch, hoping he'll understand that it's time to leave.
"Don't worry, I'll come and give you a kiss when the agency needs your services. Sleep well until then." He gives you a salute, and you smile as you return to your room.
"Lock the door behind you." You remind him before collapsing onto your bed, overcome by drowsiness.
Jean spent so much time at your place that you gave him a spare set of keys so he could come and go as he pleased. He might be a bit childish and self-centered, but he's been your friend for almost ten years and you care about him more than anyone else.

You were reading the Eldia Times, the daily newspaper, when your phone started ringing. Given the early hour, the only people likely to be calling you were Connie Springer, your informant, or Levi Ackerman.
"Hello?" You say, picking up the handset and pressing your ear against the receiver, hearing only static on the other end of the line.
"Y/N? Can you hear me?" You smile as you recognize Connie's voice on the phone, his words sometimes distorted by the lack of a clear signal due to the distance between you.
Even if your agency gave you the best phones of your generation, the technology isn't yet advanced enough to hear other people's voices with crystal clarity. Perhaps in the future, you won't need to untangle your cord to get a signal, but will simply be able to move around your house with a wireless device?
You let out a small laugh at the absurdity of your own words. A cordless phone is simply magical, and you are absolutely certain that there are no wizards in Paradis.
"I invite you to my illuminated morning walk in Fortress Park, would you like to join me?" Connie asks, hoping you can translate his coded message.
After years of perfecting your decoding skills, you can understand what he is really saying the moment the words leave his mouth.
Come to Fortress Park, near the fountain. I have some information that might interest you.
The fountain is the first place in the park to receive the sun's rays at this hour, the water having an iridescent and sparkling appearance under the light hitting it from all sides. By knowing this, you can decipher that he's asking you to meet him at the fountain.
"I'm coming." You put the receiver back in its cradle and go straight to your room to get dressed.
You're wearing your favorite dark blue velvet trousers and a blue and white striped shirt under your black trench coat to keep you warm. Fortress Park is just a few minutes from your apartment; it's where you most often meet with other agents to exchange information.ย
The entire island is riddled with microphones. The Marleyan spies have very advanced technology and can intercept and monitor your phone calls if they find them suspicious; therefore, it is best to speak in codes and have informal conversations.
You find Connie sitting on the stone ledge of the fountain, his right hand plunged into the cold water as he tries to grab a dime that is at the very bottom, hidden beneath dead leaves and pebbles.ย
"I think you have enough money, Con." You call out to him as you approach. The boy turns to you and finally takes the dime, shoving it in his pocket.
"I know, I was just throwing the coin in the air and it fell right into the water. You can buy ten lollipops with that, it's precious." You nod and sit next to him on the stone ledge, wrapping your scarf around you as the wind lifts the dead leaves and makes them twirl around you two.
The park is deserted at this hour, ideal for sharing information without any codes, just normal phrases without secret meaning.
"My dear Y/N, I have some delicious news that you will love to hear." He says, taking two lollipops out of his pocket and handing one to you.
"Go ahead, I'm all ears." You unwrap the candy and pop it into your mouth.
"Sasha started flirting with the agency's cook, Niccolo." Connie tells you, a wide smile on his face as if this information is about to turn your life upside down.
You flick him on the forehead, finally understanding why Ackerman yells at him so often. "I want real information, dimwit. Everyone knows about Sasha and Niccolo."
"Ouch, okay, okay! Be lenient next time." He raises his hands in surrender. "We went to every address listed on the papers in the briefcase you brought us. The warehouses were all empty when we arrived; there was nothing left and it looked as if they had left in a hurry, so they knew we were coming." He sighs, burying his face in the collar of his coat.
You feel anger rising inside you at the thought that these men are still on the run and free to continue their illegal activities.
"But we discovered that they weren't selling drugs, they were selling weapons. Do you remember those pistols and rifles that you brought back from your last mission in Utopia District?" Connie looks at you, whistling a merry tune as he waits for you to remember that mission.
"Of course I remember." You watch the leaves rustle in the wind and cling to their branches, struggling not to fall and join their comrades on the muddy ground.
"We analyzed those weapons and the documents you brought us. They all bear the Marleyan coat of arms." Connie looks up at the sky and closes his eyes, letting the wind caress his face.
This discovery sends a chill down your spine; your muscles go numb as if someone had just thrown a bucket of ice water on you. The Marleyans are in Paradisโthey're already two steps ahead.
"Are you trying to say there are Marleyans hiding among us?"
"No, we've identified the bodies of the men you and Jean killed; all Eldians."
"So why are they doing this? Do they have something against the monarchy? Do they want to overthrow the government?" Questions fly as you try to understand this situation and all its implications. If Eldians and Marleyans are forming secret alliances you and your agency weren't prepared for, then the island is in worse shape than you thought.
Paradis is a living being, even if we don't realize it. Its streets are its sprawling veins, its buildings its eyes, and its countless rivers are its arteries through which its blood flows across the island. When its inhabitants wage war, harm one another, and ravage their dear country, the island comes to life.
She spits out all the animosity she's accumulated over the years, too angry to hold onto it any longer. The island is its people, and the people are the island; one cannot live without the other, one cannot prosper without the other. And when one makes a mistake, usually the people, the other reminds it how it should behave.
The people of Paradis will suffer if they continue to tear each other apart. The island will no longer be a haven of peace, but an arena, a place where people will kill each other to survive. If we continue to feed on hatred and violence, the island will no longer protect us, but will turn against us.
"We think they're revolutionary groups.โ Connie says, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"I can't think of any other explanation. Okay, you've given me a headache, but thanks for the info, Con." You smile at him and nudge him with your elbow.
"Oh, and Y/N, are you still up for Reiner's basement party tonight?" Your friend asks, wondering if this sudden headache will stop you from going.
"I'm going, that's for sure. I've missed you all so much." You already made your choice last week; you wouldn't miss it for the world.
"See you tonight, Connie. You're my best informant." You wink at him and walk away, heading back to your apartment to get ready for the evening. You and your friends have been very busy these past two months and haven't had time to see each other, so you can't wait to see everyone again.
You climb the stairs to your apartment and run to your closet to find a nice outfit for tonight. But as you try on different dresses, skirts, and polo shirts, your thoughts keep returning to Connie's words at Fortress Park.
"We analyzed those weapons and the documents you brought us. They all bear the Marleyan coat of arms."
"What exactly is going on?" You ask yourself while your mind races, assailed by far-fetched theories and memories of the war.
"No, we've identified the bodies of the men you and Jean killed; all Eldians."
Are they trying to start a new war? Why would they do that? What do they stand to gain from it?
"I need a coffee." You sigh in frustration and decide to head downtown to your favorite coffee shop: Chez Trost. You push open the glass door and smile when you hear the bell above the door chiming to announce the arrival of a customer. You've tried everything on the menu of this cafe, and yet you'll never get tired of it.
You wait in line and read the menu written in different colored chalk on the slates fixed to the brick wall. Your gaze sweeps across the display case containing various pastries and cakes then settles on a familiar figure.
Jean Kirstein is dressed elegantly today: with his immaculate brown checkered trousers, white linen shirt and suspenders, he looks like the kind of man who would work for a newspaper.
He is standing in front of you, mumbling his order several times as if he is afraid of making a mistake. You don't feel like talking to anyone, so you just stay silent and continue to look at the menu.
He orders a medium cappuccino and a plate of waffles topped with syrup, then heads to a table in the far right corner, facing the window so that his back is to you.
You breathe a sigh of relief at the thought that he can't notice you from here and quickly take your order, eager to drink your coffee and forget the blood-curdling news you just heard.
You order a black coffee and a plate of pancakes then sit at a table near the window from where you see people passing by in the street going about their business.
You take a sip of your coffee and look up to observe the other customers. Your gaze suddenly meets Jean's, who gives you a broad smile and immediately gets up to join you.
Please tell me you're smiling at the person behind me. PLEASE!
The man sits across from you and continues to eat his breakfast while you keep your nose buried in your cup of coffee to avoid talking to him.
"How come you didn't sit with me?" He asks, cutting his waffles with his fork and knife before taking a bite
"It was intentional." You put your cup back on the table and give him a tight smile, your lips pressed tightly together.
You don't hate Jean, not at all, but right now you don't want to talk to anyone. Instead of wasting your time on useless conversations, you would rather spend your time trying to find a solution to save your island from an impending war.
He frowns at your laconic reply. "And here I thought we were friends."
"We have a relationship difficult to define." You reply while pouring syrup on your pancakes and rolling up your sleeves to avoid staining them.
"Oh, don't even get me started. I never know if you're happy to see me or not." Jean manages a small smile, and a little dimple forms at the corner of his mouth, giving him the same boyish grin he used to give you when you two were younger.
"By the way, are you going to the party tonight?" He rests his elbows on the table.
"Of course I'm going, why does everyone think I wouldn't be there?" You cross your arms and pout as you wonder why all the people you've talked to this morning think you wouldn't go.
"Because you're very busy, and so we never know when you can actually come to a party." Jean replies without hesitation then steals your cup to take a sip of your coffee.
"Black coffee? Something's bothering you." You had completely forgotten that he could read you like an open book, knowing what you're feeling whenever he sees you, even when you yourself are sometimes lost.
"I bought a coat, but it was too short, so my arms stick out. It's a rather foreign feeling for me. Apparently, weapons and papers are one and the same, so we find similarities between the two, isn't that surprising?" You share this coded message, elongating certain words to help him understand its secret meaning. You watch the gears in his mind begin to turn as he deciphers each word, then you see the spark in his eyes when he understands everything and realizes what you mean.
"That's truly shocking. I suppose you'll be called back to work soon. Get some good rest and enjoy it until you go back, okay?" You nod and finish your breakfast, then go place your plate and cup on the counter designated for dirty dishes.
"Drink some chamomile tea, it helps relieve headaches." Jean says to you as you head toward the front door.
"I'll keep that in mind, thank you." You step out into the cold and return to your apartment to get to the bottom of this whole mystery as soon as possible.

The hours passed quickly as you got ready, doing your hair and makeup while listening to Frank Sinatra's songs. You had chosen a pale pink shirt with a Chelsea collar, light grey trousers and black slingback pumps.
You put on your long grey trench coat and walk to Reiner's house on Warrior Avenue. It's fifteen minutes from your place, so it's an easy walk.
You stop at the bakery to buy some croissants and a few other pastries for your friends, then continue your walk. When you arrive at Reiner's house, you open the red mailbox next to the front door and read the list of names on it: you are the last one to arrive, which means you can lock the door.
You enter, turn the lock on the wooden front door to the right then take off your shoes at the entrance, placing them next to the twelve other pairs of shoes stored in a rickety shoe rack near a closet.
You hear loud voices coming from the basement and you head toward the sound, eager to see your friends again after two months without any contact.
You walk down the stairs, your heart pounding against your ribs as you hear more familiar voices. You finally reach the last step and find everyone sitting in the small living room Reiner had set up in his basement, cans of beers and various snacks placed on the small coffee table in the center.
The first people you see are Reiner and Bertholdt sitting on the couch in front of the television, while Eren is sitting alone in a recliner that you and him found in a pile of trash two years ago and brought back here.
Armin and Annie are sitting on the love seat, their legs intertwined, the blonde girl resting her head against her boyfriend's chest while he gently runs his fingers through her hair.
You turn your gaze to the right and see Sasha and Mikasa sitting on a blue sofa, right next to the one where Reiner and Bertholdt are. Ymir and Historia, meanwhile, are sitting on soft cushions on the floor. Marco is also sitting on the floor, next to Historia, his head resting against the armrest of the sofa where Mikasa is sitting.
Jean and Connie are sitting to Sasha's right. You quickly realize that the only available seat is next to one of the boys.
"Hi everyone!" You step into the basement and wave your box of pastries in the air to show your friends what you brought. Their faces light up when they see youโeven Annie who is usually impassiveโand they greet you with warm smiles.
You hug everyone and give Sasha and Mikasa a kiss on the cheek before sitting down between Connie and Jean, who have made room for you on the sofa.
You place your box of pastries on the coffee table with the other snacks and open it, revealing the croissants, pains au chocolat, and doughnuts you bought.
"You deserve to have someone make love to you until you are fulfilled for the rest of your life." Connie tells you, looking at the doughnuts with stars in his eyes.
"Can someone please get rid of this Humpty Dumpty?" Ymir raises an eyebrow in disgust, staring at the boy with a threatening expression.
"You're just jealous I give the best compliments." Connie retorts, his mouth half full with food.
Jean, who is sitting to your right, takes a glazed sprinkle doughnut out of the box and hands it to you. You stare at him incredulously, then look at him. "You don't want it?"
"It's both our favourite, but you deserve it more than me." He assures you before licking his fingers to remove the icing, then takes a butter croissant instead.
"So, who wants to tell us about their mission first?" Reiner claps his hands, drawing everyone's attention. Eren and Mikasa exchange a glance, and she nods to give him permission to begin.
"Mikasa and I went to Shiganshina to kill a spy. He was a Marleyan in disguise, and had been here for six months. We discovered he was preparing bombs in his basement to destroy important infrastructure in the city." Eren crosses his arms behind his head and tells this story as if it were a trivial matterโfor him, it probably is.
Eren and Mikasa are the best assassins in the entire agency, perhaps even on the whole island. Even though Ackerman loves to reprimand Eren daily, it's undeniable that they make a formidable team.
They have known and loved each other since childhood, but none of them had the courage to confess. However, Eren finally gained the confidence to confess his love to Mikasa three years ago and they have been dating ever since then. A special energy unites them, as if, no matter what happens, their souls are so deeply connected that nothing can separate them.
"You were too reckless, you stabbed him twice in the neck and we had to clean up the scene because his blood was everywhere." Mikasa scolds her boyfriend with an icy glare and he straightens up, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"My fault?! He's the one with too much blood!" The boy defends himself as best he can, even though his explanations make no sense.
"Eren..." Mikasa warns him, and a silent conversation ensues between them. Eren crosses his arms in defeat and leans back in his chair, silenced by that single word uttered by Mikasa.
Everyone's eyes suddenly turn toward you, curiosity etched on your friends' faces as they wait for you to speak. You wipe your mouth with a handkerchief and look at them, confused.
"You're the only one who had an interesting mission, tell us about it!" Sasha squeals, hugging you and swaying excitedly from side to side.
"Two weeks in Stohess, I wouldn't wish that on any of you." You sigh, resting your head on her shoulder.
"I was staying in an inn and I had to follow and write down my targets' every move. Eventually, I stole their documents." Everyone applauds and congratulates you for this spectacular achievement, but you quickly raise your index finger to silence them, signaling that you haven't finished your story.
"But when the other agents went to the address listed in the papers I found, the warehouses were empty. And we have reason to believe that these criminals from Stohess are in league with Marley." You see shock and terror spread across your friends' faces as you tell them the news, all except Connie, who is the one who informed you about this situation in the first place.
Reiner's face goes pale when he looks at you, his pupils dilated, his fists clenched to stop himself from trembling. "Is there a risk of a second war?"
"I don't know, nothing is certain at the moment." You reply, ashamed that you cannot provide more information and details about this topic.
"We'll just keep moving forward, until we've killed our enemies. Each and every single one will be exterminated." Eren grits out, his gaze void of any emotion as if he is in a trance, his words coming from the depths of his soul.
"You're giving me the heebie-jeebies, stop talking like a war criminal." Jean exclaims, throwing a can of beer at the brown-haired guy. Eren catches it right before it can hit his face and takes a long gulp, wiping his mouth after crushing the can in his hand.
[Play Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley]
"Our island will survive, no one can beat us." Reiner distributes an empty glass of champagne to everyone and you all gather around the coffee table to make a toast to brighten the atmosphere.
"For the survival of our island!" You all chant at the same time, your glasses clinking against each other. Sasha gets up from the sofa to fetch the gramophone abandoned on a small kitchen table on the far right of the basement. She spins the record until the song starts, and the familiar melody of an Elvis Presley song spills out of the gramophone.
"Hey! You have good taste!" Connie leaps off the sofa and grabs Sasha's hand. They start doing random dance moves around the living room, a burst of laughter escaping their lips. Connie gestures for Marco to join them, and the freckled boy rushes over, a wide smile lighting up his scarred face as he dances with his two friends.
"Would you grant me this dance?" Eren gets up from his chair and kneels in front of Mikasa, bowing slightly and extending his hand to invite her to dance.
Her face turns red at his invitation and she takes his hand, leading him to the "dance floor". Eren holds her by the waist, spinning her around to the rhythm of the music, her black dress twirling with her.
Quickly, everyone joins the dance, even Annie, although she is only holding Armin's hand as he talks to her. Historia and Ymir dance together; the brunette throws the blonde into the air before catching her, then she sticks her tongue out at Reiner who is holding Bertholdt's hands and tries to convince him to dance with the others.
You and Jean are the only two left on the sofa, but the situation quickly resolves itself when he turns to you, his hand already intertwined with yours as he helps you up from the sofa and leads you to the center of the impromptu dance floor.
"You know how to dance, don't you?" He teases, placing his hands on either side of your waist, his long fingers splayed, while moving your hips to the rhythm of the music.
"Of course I do." You put your arms behind his neck and move your feet in sync with his, twirling on the dance floor while swaying back and forth.
You let go of his neck and place your hands against his like a mirror, advancing your right foot while he advances his, and you repeat this movement with your left foot, alternating foot with each new melody.
Jean suddenly grabs you by the hips and lifts you off the ground. You place your hands on his shoulders to keep your balance as he spins you around, a mischievous smile on his lips, one you can't help but reciprocate.
You spend at least half an hour dancing and singing to a variety of songs, some sensual, some upbeat and some melancholic, but all of them putting you in a good mood as you continue to dance with Jean.
Soon enough, the clock struck, signaling that it was past midnight and that it was time for you to go home, as a good night's sleep was necessary for the work that awaited you the next day.
"I'm going home, it was nice seeing you all." You raise your voice to be heard by everyone over the music coming from the gramophone.
"Already?" Reiner looks at you with sadness in his eyes, his blond eyebrows frowning in disappointment.
"Yes, I'll probably have a lot of work starting tomorrow, so I need to sleep as much as possible." You wave goodbye and head upstairs, putting on your shoes to go home.
"Are you taking your car?" Jean appears behind you, leaning against the wall, arms crossed over his chest, while he watches you flicking an imaginary speck of dust off your pants.
"No, I came on foot." You look at your shoes, checking that your heels are securely fastened before placing your hand on the door handle, ready to go home.
"For the love of God! Y/N, you have a car, take it. For now, I'll give you a ride." Jean doesn't give you time to answer before he's already put on his shoes, leaving you no choice but to accept his offer.
"I don't mind walking." You protest, opening the front door. He follows you outside, grabbing your wrist to stop you from leaving without him.
"It's late, a woman walking alone at this hour isn't safe. Stop being stubborn and let me walk you home at least." He glares at you and you roll your eyes, knowing he's right but not willing to admit it.
"Okay." You walk over to his green Chevrolet Fleetline and get into the passenger seat. He turns the key in the ignition and the engine starts, the car rolling slowly down the street.
"You know, it's funny that I keep saving you even though we've never done a team mission." He says after a few seconds of silence, glancing at you as you look at your hands resting on your lap.
"I don't think we'll ever have a team mission." You tell him, looking out the window at the blurry shapes of the city around you.
"Why not? We're SSOP's dream team, aren't we?" Jean laughs softly, looking back at the road.
"Exactly, we are the best secret agents, so it's best to assign us to separate missions. We'll be more effective." He shakes his head, clearly dissatisfied with your reasoning.
"Or they could send us both on an important mission." You nod at his proposition, turning your head to look at him; the shadows of the night emphasize the clenching of his jaw as he turns the steering wheel.
You watch street vendors standing at their food stalls selling their last items before closing for the night, crisp and sweet aromas wafting through the air and reaching your nose as they perfume the car with various scents.
You arrive at your apartment in less than five minutes, given how close your neighbourhood is to Reiner's. "Good night, Kirstein." You step out of the car and wave to Jean before heading back to your house.
"Good night, L/N." You begin climbing up the stairs, and he leaves as soon as he is sure that you are safe inside.

As you expected, Levi called you at dawn, dragging you from your sleep and forcing you into a formal tone despite your efforts to fight off a yawn.
"The weather is warm, ideal for walking to the office. You'll be working earlier from now on." He said on the phone, in his usual impassive voice.
You got dressed quickly without giving much thought to your outfit: a simple brown dress with white stripes and the same heels as yesterday. You hastily brushed your hair and rushed to the office. Luckily, you own the fastest car of the agency, so you arrived to headquarters in less than ten minutes.
You walk to Levi's office and raise your hand to knock, but the door opens before you can even touch it; the small man is standing on the other side with his usual phlegmatic expression.
"To begin with, this will be the most important mission of your career." He declares in a neutral tone, gesturing for you to sit in the chair in front of his desk.
"Well, this is not stressful. I don't feel any pressure at all." You let out a forced laugh, already wondering what this mission will entail.
"Shut up, brat." Levi snaps at you, already sick of your sarcasm.
"My apologies, sir." You bow your head, but he ignores you and begins his explanation.
"As we recently learned, Marley is involved in supplying weapons to revolutionary groups ready to sow chaos in Paradis."
"Your mission will be to find out who is behind all this and to put an end to this illegal weapons network that could ruin us all." Levi turns his back on you, his gaze lost in the city below as he looks out the window.
"If there is an uprising, a war could break out again, and Paradis has already suffered enough; we are not even ready for a small battle." He continues, finally turning to look at you.
"For this mission, you will infiltrate the Marleyan society. Work quickly and complete it as soon as possible. The sooner the better." He looks at you with a condescending air, as if he doubts your ability to carry out this task.
"We already have a false name and a false background for you. We'll give you the papers later." You nod, trying to ignore the weight of his gaze as his piercing steel blue eyes focus on you.
"However, this mission is crucial, so we cannot entrust it to a single agent. In case you are killed along the way, someone needs to keep us informed, am I wrong?" Levi asks rhetorically, but you answer him anyway to prove that you are on the same page.
"No, sir."
"Perfect, meet your partner." Your handler nods to his office door, and you turn around to see who will be working with you.
You're left speechless when Jean Kirstein enters the scene. His usual smug smile widens as he greets Levi, but it quickly turns into a lopsided smile when he notices your presence, his features twisting in confusion.
"What are you doing here?" He mouths, sitting down in the chair next to yours.
"I was just about to ask you the same question." You murmur back, hoping Levi won't scold you for talking when he is giving you important information.
Speaking of the devil, the man in question clears his throat and appears in front of you two. "Code names: Owl and Stallion."
"I suppose I'm the owl and he's the stallion?" You point at yourself and Jean then Levi nods to confirm your assumptions.
"The two of you will pass off as a married couple under the names of Y/N and Jean Kruger." You look at him in disbelief whereas Jean gives him a joyful smile.
"Sounds good to me." The boy leans back in his chair, crossing his legs as he winks at you. "Dear wife, nice to meet you."
"We already have the papers signed for the marriage, and we will give you the address of your new apartment in Marley tomorrow." adds Levi, sitting behind his desk while you and Jean continue to stare at each other.
"Come to my office at 8 o'clock sharp tomorrow, not sooner, not later. You will both be working for the Liberio Gazette, Marley's number one newspaper, an ideal cover for gathering information." The dark-haired man rolls up the sleeves of his pristine white shirt and rests his elbows on his desk.
"Your fake marriage cover will allow you to avoid raising suspicions if you're often seen together. Take a walk around town to soak up the atmosphere and watch how Marleyans speak. I'm counting on the owl's keen eyesight and the stallion's sharp decision-making to make this mission a success." You and Jean turn your heads to look at each other once again, an amused smile playing on your lips as you listen to Ackerman's words.
"The fate of Paradis rests in your hands." Levi concludes, banging his fist on his desk to emphasize the importance of this mission.
"I don't feel any pressure, and you, Y/N?" Jean asks you, looking at the ceiling.
"Not at all." You reply, glancing at Ackerman who is observing you both with an indifferent yet annoyed expression.
"You are dismissed." He orders, and you both leave his office immediately. As you walk down the corridor, Jean nudges you with his shoulder, drawing your attention to him.
"Looks like you're going to have to marry me. How lucky I am!" He leans closer to you and tucks a strand of hair behind your ear.
"Yes, I can't wait to live in the same house as you!" You flick Jean on the forehead, pushing him away and walking to the staircase without him, laughing at the boy as he groans in pain.
As you walk down the corridor, you feel warmth rising to your cheeks. You're going to marry your best friend, Jean Kirstein, even if it's just for a mission. This means you'll have to be closer than ever and act like a real couple. You'll probably have to kiss him in front of other people.
Oh God, I'm marrying Jean Kirstein.

Am I dead?
You flutter your eyes open to look at the sky, its dull grey colour looming ominously over you. The heavens appear shrouded in ashes, the sunlight hiding behind a thick veil and leaving the world in darkness.
You wonder if this dark hue comes from the clouds preparing to drown this battlefield in heavy rain to cleanse the earth of the traces of war, or if it is smoke rising from the bombs that have just rained down on you.
Your ears are ringing painfully and your head is throbbing, the sounds around you echoing a thousand times and pounding relentlessly against your eardrums, each beat threatening to tear them apart.
Where are the others?
You were loading your rifle when enemy troops appeared in great numbers, hundreds of soldiers charging toward you and your comrades with what seemed like grenades in their hands.
No one had time to react as they pulled the safety pins and threw the explosives in your direction, the projectiles landing right in the trenches you had spent weeks digging.
Then came the thunderous sound of explosions everywhere around you. The last thing you saw before you passed out was Mikasa grabbing Eren's arm and pulling him toward her right before a grenade hit the spot where he was hiding a second ago.
The world around you is filled with smoke and flames. Dirt is clinging to your clothes, your hair, your skin. Your lungs are on fire, expanding to their maximum capacity as you search desperately for the smallest trace of oxygen in this stifling atmosphere.
You groan and slowly sit up, your muscles aching with every movement. You let out a small cry as unbearable agony washes over you, the pain coursing through your entire body and sinking deep into your bones.
You take a shaky breath and look down, the fear of what you're about to see filling your mind with theories you hope are all wrong.
I'm still alive. I'm not hurt. I'm okay.
"M-My leg." You whisper, your eyes widening in horror.
Grenade shrapnel is embedded in your right leg, blood seeping from your open wounds as the fragments pierce your skin, revealing the area of mangled muscles and arteries hiding beneath it.
You bite your lip so hard you can feel the metallic taste of your blood coating your tongue, but it is crucial to make no noise in case the enemy is close and searching for survivors.
You turn your head left and right to search for a blanket, rag, or anything else you could use to stop the bleeding.
A cold sweat runs down your back as your eyes fall on the face of someone who's lying on their back next to you. How could you only notice them now when they were right beside you the whole time?
"M-Mina?" Your insides twist as you recognize your friend's facial features. Her legs are bent at odd angles; her left femur is poking through her skin, blood oozing from her wound and staining her white pants.
Her head is split open, half of her brain matter is scattered on the muddy ground while the other half is resting in what remains of her skull.
Her eyes who were once so full of life are gone. The left one is completely torn out, leaving its socket empty like a crater. Her right eye has become a ghastly mixture of flesh and blood, her dark iris who used to sparkle when she had an idea in mind no longer recognizable among the other mangled parts of her eye.
You force yourself to swallow the vomit that's just risen in your throat and turn your head away from your fallen comrade. This is warโyou knew this would happen.
You look back down at your right leg and panic when you see a pool of blood surrounding it, the liquid tinting the fabric of your white pants a dark red. You grab the hem of your shirt and rip it off in one swift motion, the sound of the fabric tearing interrupting the sinister silence.
You quickly wrap it around your leg and tie a firm knot to stop the bleeding. You can feel the grenade fragments stabbing your flesh as your makeshift bandage pushes them deeper into your leg, but you hold back your screams, determined to make it out alive.
The smoke dissipates after a few minutes and the sky clears, the grey clouds that were lingering overhead swirling away in the wind. You can finally see what's around you as the sun shines through the last remnants of smoke and bathes the world in its golden light.
A massacre.
Dozens of bodies are piled on top of each other. At first glance, this macabre scene seems to stretch for miles. It's unclear whether the enemy attacked a specific section of the trenches or the entirety of them, but you hope that you were unlucky enough to be among the only fraction who was attacked. It's impossible for so many soldiers to die at the same time, right?
It can't happen. It's impossible.
A small tear slides down your cheek as you turn your head back in Mina's direction. You sniffle then remove her vest from her shoulders as gently as you can before placing it over her mutilated body.
You check that you covered her face correctly then crawl away from her corpse, your tears blurring your vision as you cry in silence. You glance around to see if there are any enemy troops nearby. The battlefield is empty, devoid of any sign of life.
You place your hand flat on the elbow rest and stand up, but your right knee wobbles as soon as you put your weight on it. You fall down and mutter a curse as you furrow your eyebrows in frustration.
You gasp for air and wheeze repeatedly as you search for your rifle to use it as a crutch. You find it lying next to a small crate, and you're lucky it's only covered in dirt and not blown to bits like the rest of your comrades.
You dig your fingers into the ground as you crawl toward your rifle, beads of sweat rolling down your temple as you try to move without hurting your right leg. You freeze when you notice that something bloody is covering half of your weapon.
Intestines.
Someone's entrails are hanging from your rifle, their organs emitting a squelching sound as they slide slowly to the ground.
Faced with this gruesome sight, you can no longer contain your urge to throw up. You dig your palms deep into the muddy earth and lower your head as your stomach empties its contents.
Your esophagus burns as your gastric acid rises into your mouth. You cough violently and bits of food you ate the day before fly out of your mouth to land ungracefully on the floor with a thud, landing directly in the puddle of liquid that was sitting in your stomach.
You wipe your mouth and grimace slightly as the acrid, fetid smell of vomit reaches your nose, its foul stench burning your nostrils.
You lean on your rifle before continuing your advance in the trenches. The silence hangs heavy in the air, signalling to you that mostโif not allโof your friends are dead.
Your shoe hits something, and you look down to see a hand resting near your foot. The skin on the fingers has been torn off and you look around to search for it, but it is nowhere to be seen. You can see the tendons and bones of this person's hand; blood is no longer flowing from this serious injury, as it probably gushed forth as soon as this hand was ripped from its owner.
As you tread more cautiously through this graveyard of unburied bodies, you encounter more and more horrific scenes that you know will remain etched in your mind for the rest of your life.
Decapitated bodies, burned corpses, intestines, jaws wide open and broken, lacerated legs and arms, brain matter, crushed eyes, bones, tendons, muscles.
It is a total butchery.
You tear your eyes away from the slaughtered bodies of your comrades and continue on, searching for possible survivors. Given the number of casualties, at least a thousand soldiers must have attacked this area.
A thousand enemies attacked you.
A thousand of your comrades died.
Your knees tremble as the shrapnel in your leg digs into your torn muscles with every step. You fall to the ground with exhaustion, your rifle flying out of your hand and landing a few feet away from you.
You look up to see if you can reach it from your position and notice a bright red flag with a nine-pointed star drawn in its center. It's billowing softly in the wind, just in front of your weapon: the Marleyan military flag. A shiver of terror slides down your spine and makes your blood run cold as realization sets in.
Shiganshina has fallen.

The island is trying to recover after half a decade of war, but a new threat is looming in the horizon.
You are a spy who work for the Secret Service of Paradis (SSOP) and after years of work with the agency, you are tasked with the most important mission of your career: infiltrate the Marleyan society and dismantle an illegal weapons network that is selling its products to revolutionary groups in Paradis to reignite the war and seize your resources.
Unfortunately, you are paired with Jean Kirstein, your infuriating yet charming colleague who always finds a way to interfere with your tasks. As if things couldn't get any worse, you will also have to be in a fake marriage with him to maintain your cover.
Will you both be able to unmask the conspiracy brewing beneath your feet and save Paradis? But above all, will you be able to face your fears and finally break down the walls you have built around yourself for years?
