Just in case anyone was wondering: I am not dead. I am merely trying my first animatic starring James. Updates to come on canon things though!
Here’s a hint: James is no longer Romani-coded.
Some concepts I made for James’ parents! Rosalind Kirkland and Alan Kirkland.
They’ve had to give up a lot.
The fearless captain himself: James Nigel Kirkland!
Will they or won’t they? James’ most trusted companions: William Byrne and Emmanuel Cervantes!
The mysterious chef, the loyal father, and the only one who’s got his life together!: Ngai Huru Phan, Derik Uduak, and Beni da Lore!
Adoptive brothers, Arby’s Djino and Allen Ralph Williams!
Sisters from other Misters: Mareilli Lopez and Liszet Jettôn Rangle!
Actual siblings: Pasha Utkin and Jean “Rasstrelnikov” Utkin and their loveliest half-sister, Katherine Utkin!
I e-mailed the Romany and Traveller Family History Society the other day asking if they happened to know any resources/the validity of the ones I’d read so far and they replied!! It was super exciting!! I’m so excited I can’t wait until I can just DIVE RIGHT IN.
There’s something particularly exciting about being able cross-ref or just see connections between different books
Popular Pets in Sirachia
There’s the obvious ones: dogs, cats, rabbits, etc. A lot of Aerins enjoy fish, but you really only see them in the homes of those who are well off and can afford to keep aquatics. The Grounded don’t really tend to keep too many birds, unlike the Aerins, but they’re crazy about fish and amphibians.
Here’s a few other common ones that we (fortunately?? unfortunately??) do not have in our world:
They grow to be around a foot long, kind of like koi fish. They’re mostly used for decoration, many Grounded buying them expensive aquariums or building an extravagant pond for them. However, they are extremely territorial and do not bode well with other fish. They use their whiskers to feel around and find prey, and their fins are used mostly for display. Long snouts (?? what is the proper fish terminology here?) help them scruffle and snuffle through the sand in order to find any tasty bits hidden underneath.
Laurels (also: Loros, Lauriels) used to be a wild species of bird native to Luminosa. They were very aggressive, however, due to thousands of years of selective breeding, there are now plenty of Laurels in pet stores. Although not completely domesticated, these birds have become much more docile. Graceful as peacocks, but much less expensive and oftentimes more colorful, it’s not uncommon to see several wild Laurels roaming around affluent neighbourhoods. Although they cannot mimic human speech, their bird song is said to be highly pleasant to wake up to.
Pictured: Male Grounded Ramon (left), Female Aerin Ramon (right). Sexual dimorphism remains the same between the two types, with males growing swirled “horns” on the sides of their heads, and females not.
Originally from the Aerin Island of Fôrette, ramons were highly popular pets among the poorer, working class. They are exceptional at hunting pests such as rats and mice, and their brilliant colors were relaxing to look at after a long day’s work. Their ability to fly for short distances helped them silently pounce on their prey without damaging too many crops. Recently, there have been successful efforts in breeding a Grounded-type Ramon, thanks to a mutation that caused some ramons to lose their wings. These grounded ramon are hardier in build, with slightly longer, thicker legs, bigger bones, and shrunken air sacs. Due to the loss of their air sacs, the grounded ramon are no longer capable of producing sparks or embers, as the Aerin ramon are. Emmanuel has a ramon named Saulo.
The state animal of Old Biranit, the Popular Yvernne is perhaps more common than dogs there. However, their popularity is merely so-so in the rest of Elan Rid and Sirachia. It would be akin to someone in the US owning a ferret or a rat. So-so. They make good companions for those who aren’t the athletic type, as they prefer to laze about and bask in the sunlight. Cold-blooded, they prefer the temperate climates of places like Maceari, Fôrette, Luan, and some parts of Kafri and Yadish. It’s not impossible to find them in Veruvia or Olisi, but it’s not also very common either. Many children joyfully call them “Sky Noodles.” William used to have an Yvernne when he was younger, appropriately named “William Jr.”
Pujintso (also Phụ̄cîngck, Originally: Phụ̄ch cîngck, literally “Plant-Lizard”) are a type of Amphibian native to Southern Yadish. They can range in size from a house cat to a medium-sized dog. Not much is known about this newly-popular pet, however, people adore it for its strange, plant-like gills. There is little to no color variation in this species, but they are known to come in Saffron (yellow), Gold (orange), and Ghost (white). Since they require large enclosures, these animals are HIGHLY uncommon in Aerin households. In fact, almost all the Aerins who own them are wealthy and have ponds built for them. Even for the Grounded, these animals are generally reserved for those with either the space or the money needed to house them. Unfortunately, many parents gift these animals to their children for birthdays and holidays as they start out no larger than a gecko, but once they begin to grow into their full adult size and parents realize they are no longer small and cute, they are thrown out or released into the wild. Most do not survive.
Now for the not-so-common “pets”:
Dracoshka are native to Luminosa, yet they are the national animal of Elan Rid. Dangerous, and temperamental, with the smallest growing to be the size of a large dog, it is no wonder that so many discourage the act of owning these “drakes” as pets. Although many believe them to share common ancestors with dragons, scholars believe that dracoshka simply evolved along with dragons, mimicking their appearance and certain mannerisms in order to avoid any unwanted predation. As reptiles, they require mild-humid temperatures, both of which are provided in Luminosa. The poaching and smuggling of Dracoshka is prolific in Sirachia, especially to the wealthy of Elan Rid, however, efforts are being taken to keep them out of other islands. Their favorite prey item is ramons. James has a dracoshka named Dierdre, after one of the Ridinian goddesses, and often shortens it to Dee.
Ok. These aren’t technically pets. You wouldn’t find them in pet stores, really. Maybe fantasy Ace Pet and Garden. They’re not really like, smuggled either. They’re like the chickens of Sirachia. Sure, you could like, go out and find some. Catch ‘em and keep ‘em. Raise ‘em. But they’re….they’re so dumb and silly. Thanks to their scrawny legs and round bodies, if they get knocked over it’s extremely difficult to get them back up. However, they’re really affectionate and playful if you manage to earn their trust and comfort. They don’t live very long, though. Probably five in the wild and seven to ten in captivity.
I wasn’t even going to include these on the pet post but I love them so much I want like fifty of them. More on twiddlers here.
Twiddler Masterpost
So my roommate couldn’t figure out how the twiddlers worked (a good point) so I drew a more “realistic” version to try and paint out my vision for them. Noodle legs are just much more fun to draw.
Twiddlers do have wings, but they are pressed tightly against their bodies (à la ostrich style). However, one subspecies of twiddler, the Great Burrowing Twiddler, has lost much of its wing mass and therefore cannot fly, but is an excellent jumper and may “hover” for 1-3 seconds. This, however, expends a great deal of energy, and they mostly tend to escape into their burrows to avoid predators.
Pretty much all the twiddlers pictured here are Great Burrowing Twiddlers with the exception of the roosting twiddlers.
They originated in Southern Yadish.
The Inathid
To call them "Dreamers" or "Walkers" is not...technically correct. It very well is useful, but it does not describe them accurately for those who are not Tadghan, or Ridinian for that matter. Their origins are not completely understood either. Old Selwa most definitely has the largest concentration of them by far, so many believe they came from there. Others believe that is where they tend to settle. Some who enjoy a good outlandish theory think that they were the originators of Maceari. Some even say they were nomads from Yadish. As for how long they have been in Maceari, as far as anyone can tell, they have been in this region for as long as the Old Macearans. There have been mixed studies about whether or not they were here during the time of Ancient Macedosa. I pray it stays this way.
To be clear, they are not only a group of people, but a group of people who are of some ambiguous race. Again, considering we do not know their origins, if they are, in fact, Sel or Macearan, it would mean a lot of trouble for many people. Hence the effort to distance them from any singular origin or from a race all together. Instead, they are grouped according to lifestyle:
Ask a Ridinian, or most Tadghans, what they are called, and it will depend to whom you are referring to. Have they assimilated? Then they are a Walker. Have they not? A Dreamer. These names are based off of an old Ridinian/Tadghan myth.
Originally all Inathid were called Dreamwalkers, but once they began to assimilate the separation began.
"Dreamers" remained in their dreams, unaware of the changing world around them, too preoccupied about carrying on their tales. “Walkers” have given that up and now walk among those who are awake. Walkers are much less dangerous to the Ridinian Regime. Still, they are Inithi, and as such "retain their dreams."
Those who are not Tadghan, or who do not ascribe to the legend of the Dreamwalkers, have a different explanation for as to why the Inathid are so hated and now persecuted:
Most likely, this all started because an Inithi discovered some inconsistencies in a royal line. Perhaps his family was usurped long ago, or perhaps the Inathid were the original inhabitants of this land. He then spread the news to his people, and thus a widespread persecution and legend arose as a cover up.
But what is Tadghanism if not one large plot to cover up the mess of politics?
Whether or not this explanation is true depends on how one views Elan Rid.
The Dreamwalkers
There was the Great Tadgh, who created the gods, who, in turn, created the Dreamwalkers. These Dreamwalkers were inhuman, and, true to their name, inhabited the realm of dreams and abstractions. They are somewhat akin to muses, but were much more. Not gods nor deities, but the very ideas themselves. They were dreams.
They were able to speak to the gods directly, and with humans and gods alike through dreams. This also granted them influence, as all are susceptible to a soft whisper as they rest. Aside from the Great Tadgh, they were the only ones who seemed to have omnipotence and omnipresence.
Naturally, that is a very threatening scenario.
At the same time, were you a Temptation, it is a very opportune scenario. Leucine, the Second, sought out godlike powers through felling Alain, however, no doubt that she too first attempted to usurp the gods along with her sisters by hunting the Dreamwalkers. Despite being the very embodiment of an idea, Dreamwalkers tended to have forms that resembled humans. It make traversing the realm of dreams easier, and comforted the humans more.
The Temptations, in all their vanity and power lust, attempted to capture the Dreamwalkers, for if they were able to control dreams, they could nestle ideas into the gods’ minds much more easily.
Be it as it may, the Dreamwalkers, having become aware of this plot, fled their real and entered the human realm. Once outside the safety of their realm, however, they would not survive for long, so the Dreamwalkers each seized a human, entered their minds, and transformed them into a vessel.
And thus, the Inathid were born, Inathid being the self-given name of their people.
It goes that the Inathid were retained the knowledge and powers of the Dreamwalkers, but as time went on and they become more and more human, those powers dwindled to nothing. But the knowledge? That knowledge remained alive in the form of word and song.
Tadghan Doctrine: Patron Gods and Goddesses
Note: despite there being gods and goddesses, I will be referring to them all as gods in this post for conveniences’ and expediency’s sake.
In Tadghanism, it’s not just worshipping your favorite god it’s worshipping your patron god
So let’s say a child is born. All the gods watch over them until that child starts showing SOME talent or proclivity towards something that directly aligns with one of the gods. So, accordingly, each god aligns itself with that person in return and bestows upon them gifts.
Ex: Someone who is diplomatic might find themselves under Loiche’s protection, as Loiche is the god of harmony and maintains everything in working order. Loiche gives them the gift of a soothing tongue, or the gift of maintaining neutrality. A queen, who guards her people with righteous fury finds herself under the protector Protair, and her passion may never die out, or he may give her resources used in order to protect (food in famine, people for armies, wisdom to rule).
It becomes very obvious very quickly who ones’ patron god is, and so they start to worship them more than the others.* Sometimes, there might be an individual who shows more than one talent. In this case, the respective gods will act accordingly, however, the individual may not recognize this. They may only worship one god in this case, the worshipped god’s talent becomes predominant, but the others will not abandon their child despite this. However, should the individual recognize this and worship all gods respectively, their talents will grow exponentially.
ex: Someone is a natural businessman. They have the patronage of Eileen and Peter. He only recognizes Peter. While he may not be as lucky as he was before, poor luck in business does not cause him to lose money. If he recognized Eileen, while his business may not be very successful or prosperous, his investments may be hit by strokes of good luck, thus keeping his income steady. Someone is an expert craftsman and musician. Their tapestries and songs recount events in great detail. They worship Tadgh, Ellina, Viviana, and Fionnlagh equally. They go down in history as the legendary bard or craftsman who could stop wars with just their songs and crafts.
Many parents will name their children either after their own patron god, or the god that they want their children receive patronage from.
For example, someone named “Finny” would be destined to be a GREAT storyteller.
HOWEVER
Seamus, the god of chaos, LOVES messing with things. He’ll give people false talents only to watch them crash and burn, or incite the other gods and turn them against each other to watch them crash and burn. He himself will not become anyone’s patron, however, he WILL steal another god’s beneficiary and use them to his own means.
For example, say someone WAS under Eileen and Fionnlagh, showing a great talent for dancing. Seamus may instill a talent for protection, causing them to join the navy instead of do their true calling. Say there is someone who Seamus has taken a liking to, who has the potential to create more chaos that Seamus can nurture and watch. Of course, this is at the human’s expense.
*Should the person never recognize their talent or patron god, they still retain their talent but it does not grow. It will stagnate and they may either be content with it or it may leave them unsatisfied. It is up to the god if they want to intervene. Should a person completely mistake their patron god (as in, if they falsely believe they have a talent which they do not have) and begin to worship them, it is at the gods’ discretions whether they wish to bestow upon a human a new talent or ignore their worship.
GODS AND GODDESSES, FOR REFERENCE: Tadgh, the Poet Eileen, the Lucky Loiche, the Harmonious Ellina, the Cosmic Viviana, the Breathing Dierdre, the Faithful Alain, the Caring Saeir, the Trickster Uilleam, the Keeper Fionnlagh, the Storyteller Dh'Aoimhe, the United Seamus, of Chaos Peter, the Fortunate Calum, the Thoughtful Arthel, the Carpenter Serite, the Knowing Leah, the Lover Protair, the Protector
Smirnova-Seslavinskaya and Tsetkov thus neatly show that Russian gaje scholars can compete with the worst of Western scholars in producing speculative unscientific rubbish on the flimsiest of evidence.

Maceari
James’ homeland is Elan Rid, a powerful country in continent of Maceari. Officially, there are three countries in Maceari: Elan Rid, Ganndel, and Taslcond. Their languages are Ridinian, Ganndenese, and Tasl, respectively.
However, many people consider Elan Rid as an unofficial empire. In about 500 AD (approximately thirteen centuries ago), Maceari was home to five countries: Elan Rid, Taslcond, Ganndel, Biranit and Selwa. The Ridinian king, King Erin VI, decided to conquer the two smaller nations of Biranit and Selwa. Although the Tasl ruler, Queen Mary XIV, wanted to help the Sels and the Biranish, the geography of Maceari proved to be a major obstacle. By the time the Tasl figured out how to get to the Ridinian army quickly, King Aran I of Ganndel had convinced Queen Mary XIV to let the Ridinians take the kingdoms. His argument was that they were minor kingdoms and that their economic state was so miserable they would benefit from being under Ridinian rule. In addition, their (Biranit and Selwa’s) impoverished states would bring down the Ridinian economy, acting as a sort of punishment for their land lust.
As it turns out, King Aran was correct. For the next three centuries, Elan Rid struggled to regain their economic status after conquering the two poverty-stricken nations. Before his death, King Leon III evoked the Edict of Duslhein: All Sels and Biranish subjects were to speak Ridinian. They could keep their culture, but in order to help regain their economic strength, a national language was needed.
Today, most people (with the exception of Ridinians) consider Elan Rid, Selwa, and Biranit as separate countries within the “Ridinian Empire” due to their vast cultural differences. However, on official documents they are all Elan Rid.

Lamalma, Elpa, Barko, Incio, Delphi, and Ñito.
Tadghism
Tadghism is the dominant and official religion of Elan Rid. It is a polytheistic religion, the most important god being the poet, The Great Tadgh, maker of the gods and godesses. Most Ridinians have a god or goddess that they prefer, and worship those favorites more fervently, but all Tadghans observe each god’s respective Holy Day and bring offerings to that god’s temple.
Denominations:
There is a denomination of Tadghism, Holy Tadghism, which preaches that there is only one god, The Great Tadgh, and the other gods were merely created by ancient Ridinians to explain natural phenomena or represent concepts and ideas. This form of Tadghism is not very widespread in Elan Rid, but it is far more dominant in Paraïso.
Due to the fact that most Ridinians typically chose to worship one god/goddess over all the others, there aren’t may conflicts between the two denominations, and certainly fewer violent ones. What tends to happen is that a Tadghan would pray to the gods on behalf of the Holy Tadghan, insisting that the Holy Tadghan doesn’t know any better, but he still worships the maker, The Great Tadgh, and should therefore be absolved of all their sins.
Doctrine:
Tadghan doctrine teaches that there are many gods and goddesses, all of whom were made out of poems and words sung by Tadgh. However, while there are the gods, there are also the Temptations. The Temptations were created when Tadgh sang a discordant note, ruining the god he was creating and twisting it into something most foul. Temptations corrupt mankind and teach humans things that are displeasing to Tadgh, keeping them from joining him in the afterlife.
The afterlife is split into two zones: Halvi and I’frer.
Halvi is strictly for the righteous and virtuous. While it is believed that one must be Tadghan and righteous to enter Halvi, there is a general consensus that The Great Tadgh is the ultimate judge of such matters, and if he believed that one lived more righteously and virtuously than one of his own children, he may grant them entry into Halvi.
I’frer was for all non-Tadghans and the wicked. If one never repented, or converted, The Great Tadgh would not even allow them to set foot on Judgement, and send them straight to I’frer where the first Temptation, Briste, would judge and decide their fate, ultimately picking a suitable level to place them in. As stated before, if one was not Tadghan, but righteous, it is believed Tadgh would allow them into Judgement and they would have a chance to enter Halvi.
Gods and Goddesses:

*Alain was tempted by the Temptation, Lorrail, and therefore fell from godhood and lives his days wandering the In Between (Sirachia) as neither god nor temptation. He is now known as Alain, the Unfaithful Father.
**Saeir was the god of deception. He takes the form of a snake, however, one day he was deceived by a child and beheaded as a result. Contemporary Ridinians now see him as having been a god of weakness, having been outplayed by a mere child and killed.

Briste, the First
Leucine, the Second
Cassandra, the Third
Sari, the Fourth
Ariette, the Fifth
Grainne, the Sixth

*It is said that Protair defeated Bláth in recent years, quelling her blasphemous tongue and ceasing her quest of instilling dissent in the Ridinian populace.
On Queen Jezebel II and Jezebellan Propoganda
Queen Jezebel II, despite popular Rishin (someone not of Ridinian origin) actually WAS a good queen and a popular queen. She cared for her people and really wanted to see Elan Rid become a great nation.
She saw the sorry state that the navy was in and shook her head thinking, “That just won’t do,” and she started to reform the navy and its assets, like better ships and better training because, let’s be honest, back then they were more incompetent than today’s navy.
So, she suggests things such as “Oh why don’t we figure out how to distinguish navy men from the civilians? Like a tattoo or something, that way the number of deserters decreases, and if somebody does defect everyone knows they did and it makes it harder for them to find a job. That way it’ll discourage all the people who join just for the prestige and leave because of the work,” and thus branding came into play
She probably also commented on how disobedient everybody was. Although not an outright suggestion, she would say things like, “They should really listen to their leaders more they know what they’re doing.” So harsher punishments came into place which would later evolve into the conditioning and brainwashing
On the flip side, she was very good about urbanization and public welfare. She tried to make the cities feel less crowded by adding parks and hiring people to make some form of public transportation/sewage easier and cleaner. She was great with her subjects listened to their petitions and actually thought them over. So really, her popularity is well earned–at least up until 1750, when it shifted from mere respect and admiration into propaganda. Smack Jezzie’s face on anything and suddenly it’s holy and sacred.
