"So," James said, obviously trying to be casual as they returned to their flat, though the anticipation in his tone was painfully clear.

"So," Regulus repeated, raising an eyebrow and looking at his boyfriend expectantly. 

"Marlene's ring," James continued, biting his lip and blinking a bit too rapidly.

Dorcas had just proposed to Marlene a few days, so of course she'd spent most of brunch showing off her engagement ring to everyone. 

"Yes," Regulus nodded, holding back a smile as he let James squirm. "What was it Sirius said? It was...a 'fucking rock.'"

"Yeah..."

He almost felt bad about how amusing it was to watch his boyfriend flounder. Almost.

"Do you...erm...if you were to ever get engaged. Would you want a ring like that?" James asked, rubbing at the back of his head and wincing.

"Bold of you to think I'm interested in marriage," Regulus replied cooly, mirth bubbling in his chest as he watched the taller man grapple for any sort of reply that didn't let on to his disappointment.

"Oh! No, I...that's not..." James stammered, eyes wide.

But Regulus couldn't help but allow his grin to stretch across his face. "Potter," he said calmly, reaching for him and resting his hands on James's shoulders. 

"Yes?" James asked hopefully, sweat forming a little at his temples.

"Buy me a damn ring."

Together, Sirius and Regulus tapped on James’s contact in their phones, glancing at each other with narrowed eyes as their thumbs hovered over their screens.

Remus, who was lounging on the couch, sighed. “You know this type of stupid competition is only going to cause hurt feelings, right?” he asked the other two, rolling his eyes.

“Shove off, Moony,” Sirius snapped, frowning. “Ready, Reg?” he asked his brother.

Regulus just nodded.

At the end of Sirius’s count down from three, both of them called James, immediately hanging up after the calls connected. Then, they waited with bated breath until–

“HA!” Sirius shouted, waving his phone around. James’s picture was lighting up on his screen. “He loves me more!”

Furiously, Regulus grabbed the device and answered the call. “Potter, what the fuck? We’re married!” he snarled into the speaker, eyes narrowed.

James clearly needed a moment to figure out what was going on, because a few seconds of stuttering and spluttering could be heard. Then, he demanded, “What, that was a test?”

“Yes!” Sirius and Regulus answered together, one beaming as the other frowned.

Remus could only snort.

“Why did you call him back first? We share a bed, for fucks sake!” Regulus yelled, looking like he could spit fire.

“It’s alright, Jamie,” Sirius beamed, sticking his tongue out. “We all know you love me more. Go on, admit it.”

But James just gave an awkward laugh. “Erm…honestly? I figured Sirius was more like to be in jail, so…”

Immediately, the expressions on the two brothers’ faces switched. “Ha!” Regulus grinned. “Fuck you!”

And Remus couldn’t help but dissolve into laughter as he looked to his own husband’s pouting face and said, “Sorry, Sirius, but that’s a fair reason….”

“Hey,” James said affectionately as he walked up behind Regulus, wrapping his arms around the younger boy and pressing a kiss to his neck. “Sirius and I are going back to Diagon today to get that book I forgot. Did you want me to grab some money from your vault, too?”

Regulus, who was standing at the Potters’ kitchen counter, helping Effie bake some cookies for the neighbors, turned around and nodded. “Yes, thanks. Can’t believe I didn’t stop when we went last week. Let me go grab my key.”

But when he’d returned from the guest room he was staying in to drop the small silver key into James’s hand, he hesitated, remembering. “Oh, wait. You can’t–there’s additional security on Black family accounts. You either need me, my wand, or the access code.”

But James just tilted his head to the side, clearly unable to understand what the problem was. “What, you don’t trust me with the code? That’s alright, let me go get Sirius, you can tell him–”

“It’s not–it’s not that I don’t trust you,” Regulus interrupted, quick to correct his boyfriend, because he wanted to be clear.

So James stopped, giving him a look again, obviously confused. “Then…what is it?”

Regulus frowned, fidgeting a little. “I…had to change it recently. When I left home, you know.”

James nodded, eyebrows still furrowed. “Alright?”

“I…had to pick something quick. Something they wouldn’t guess,” Regulus continued to explain, feeling himself turn red.

James chuckled, clearly picking up on Regulus’s discomfort. “What, did you pick our anniversary or something? I’m not going to laugh, Reg, what is it?”

“No, nothing like that,” he shook his head, pursing his lips. But it didn’t escape him that something like disappointment sparked in James’s eyes. “It’s just…the code is…” He sighed. “It’s 0327.”

Immediately, James lit up brighter than the sun. “It’s…really?” he beamed, moving to pull Regulus close.

“Don’t get a big head about it. I was emotionally distraught at the time. Not thinking clearly,” Regulus mumbled, avoiding eye contact.

But James just laughed. “Sure, Reg. I love you.”

Of course he said it back.

If only because maybe his head was still a little fuzzy.

Regulus could tell what, exactly, James had to tell him just from the tone of his voice. He’d heard it too many times before–the drawn out vowels, the nervousness and hesitancy. 

Potter had gotten a detention on date night again.

He sighed. “What, James?” he snapped, looking up to see his boyfriend standing in front of him with a grimace on his face. As he fucking should.

“I…erm…we may need to reschedule tonight,” James muttered, wincing.

Regulus, who was almost a foot shorter than the Gryffindor, stood up to his fullest height and crossed his arms, looking to James and levelling him a glare. The taller boy seemed to shrink even more. “Why, Potter?” he demanded, already knowing the answer.

“I…got a detention.”

“Potter, I swear to fucking Merlin and Morgana–”

“Reggie, I swear, it was a good reason this time!” James jumped in, arms raised in surrender, looking close to tears. 

He was close to pulling out his wand. “A good reason? What could be a good enough reason–?”

But James pushed forward. “There was this–this bloke, right? Second year. He’s trans, and the new Defense Professor was giving him shit, making him wear the girls’ uniform–”

Regulus’s stomach immediately sank, terrible memories of his own childhood flashing through his mind. Eyes widening, mouth falling open a little, he realized what’d happened.

“-so I tried to tell her, the professor, I mean, about the rules here, but she was being a right tit about it. So I Transfigured my trousers into a skirt right there, told the second year, ‘See? It’s fine, all the coolest blokes wear skirts.’ ‘Course, the professor wasn’t please, so now–”

But he was cut off by Regulus, who’d reached up to kiss him. Sinking into James’s embrace, Regulus lost himself for several seconds before pulling back and giving his boyfriend a halfhearted glare. “Fuck you for having a good reason,” he murmured, unable to fight back a smile.

James grinned, too. “So I’m not in trouble?”

“No. But you should talk to McGonagall. She’d probably like to hear about what happened,” Regulus suggested. Then he paused, pursing his lips. “Also, did you keep the skirt? Just…curious to see how it looked on you.”

Now James was beaming. “I’ll go talk to her. Meet me after detention, yeah? I’ll bring the skirt.”

“Alright.”

“Mister Black, can I speak with you for a moment?” Professor McGonagall asked him with an odd expression, interrupting his low conversation with Barty, Evan, and Pandora.

Looking up nervously, Regulus nodded.

Pulling him to the side of the group of Hogwarts graduates, McGonagall began to whisper. “Mister Black, I just wanted to let you know that we had to move your family from the front row. They were…erm…causing a bit of a commotion, and some other people complained–”

“My family?” he gaped. Never in a million years would he have predicted that Walburga and Orion would show up to his graduation, not after their falling out at the end of last year. They were here? What awful things were they doing? He tried not to panic, clenching his fists.

Unaware of his terror, McGonagall continued. “Yes. Potter, Lupin, and Sirius were setting off fireworks already, I think they have a whole display planned for when you walk the stage. Even Euphemia and Fleamont–”

Shocked, Regulus couldn’t help but interrupt. “They–they’re all here?” he asked, amazed.

She paused. “Why–yes. Of course. Who did you think I meant?”

A small smile formed on his face. He’d thought James could come, maybe Sirius. But Remus? James’s parents? He couldn’t stop smiling. “No, I–sorry. Okay. Tell James if he doesn’t get his act together I’m staying at Remus’s for the summer.”

The Professor grinned. “I think that will be very convincing.” As she turned to leave, though, she looked back. “Congratulations, Mister Black. On the diploma and everything else.”

He beamed. “Thank you.”

“For the fifteenth time, ask James!”

“He can’t come home right now,” Sirius said lazily as he lounged on James and Regulus’s couch, rolling his eyes back dramatically. “He has work, Reg, it’s–”

“Yeah, and he can leave,” Regulus said stubbornly, crossing his arms. James had been at work for hours, and it was high time he came home. Plus, Regulus didn’t want to help Sirius pick out an outfit for his date with Remus for tonight, so James needed to come deal with his annoying best friend.

“Just be human for five minutes and give me your opinion, yeah? I took pictures. And then, of course, you need to help me pick out eyeliner,” Sirius mumbled, already swiping through pictures on his phone. “And a jacket. And shoes.”

And yeah, Regulus had had enough. Picking up his own phone, he called his boyfriend’s number.

“James?” he asked when the other man answered on the first ring.

“Reggie? You okay, love?”

“Hm, yeah, fine,” he replied, pretending to be preoccupied. “Just wondering…do we have a hammer in the flat somewhere?”

The line was deadly quiet. Then: “Reggie, baby, why do you need a hammer?” James’s tone was so sweet and terrified that Regulus almost rethought his decision. Almost.

“I want to hand those shelves we got,” he said casually, still seated firmly in his armchair, the shelves in question nowhere to be seen. “Figured you’ve been taking forever to do it, and–oh, shit–” With his foot, he nudged a pile of books on the nearby coffee table, sending them crashing to the ground. 

James clearly heard the noise they made, as he gasped on the phone. “Reg? Did you…what happened?”

“Nothing, Potter, I can hang shelves fine by myself! Just tell me where the hammer is!” he snapped, voice harried even as he grinned at Sirius, who had placed a hand on his face and was shaking his head.

“Love, maybe I should come help, it sounds like–” But Regulus cut him off.

“Nevermind, got it! Bye, love you!” He hung up, ignoring James’s frantic protests, and put his phone on silent, smiling evilly. 

Sirius stared at him, wide-eyed, though he definitely looked a bit impressed.

“James should be home to help you with your outfit in about ten minutes,” he said smugly.
