When I design a character, I always start by mapping out my first idea into the centre of the page, laying out the groundwork of a silhouette, basic hair and outfit shapes, and defining facial features. Once I am happy with this sketch, I then repeat that sketch, but experiment with hair shape, facial expressions and potential outfit choices, expanding out onto the rest of the page. As I go along, I write notes of any storyline ideas that come to mind so as mot to forget them, and so they can inspire me further down the line, and I also block out potential colour palettes. If an idea isn't working, I will then switch to a tool that cannot be erased (like pen) and draw a series of alternations for the idea in quick succession, so I can see every possible outcome laid out before me, to help me continue onward.
Once the beta sketch is completed, I then move onto creating a digital character portrait, to lay out a definite shape for the character, I use my pre established colour palette to begin with, and combine features from every experimental design, before choosing the strongest ideas, and merging them together for the lineart layer. After the sketch is completed, I then use editing layers to test out how the character may look with a softer tone, or a contrasting main colour, and lay out each option side by side, so I can review my options, before I add final details and render the final design, all of this is demonstrated above with my newest character, Lian Zhao.

As an artist, one of my biggest inspirations is music, and how different styles and genres can have an influence on how you work, in a controlled and an uncontrolled style. I have been a fan of musical theatre and the performing arts since I was 8 years old, and to this day I still focus most of my musical taste onto soundtracks, and how each song tells a story. I used to participate in theatre productions inside school and outside, but most of the time, I found myself more interested in the set design, the posters, the promotional photography, and even the posters. While I mainly found myself in minor or supporting roles, I still wanted to show my face at rehearsal every day, as I was always excited to show the director my newest ideas for the programme and poster they asked me to design and format. Especially for my upper school production of Annie, in 2019.
I also used music as an influence for my art more recently, for my Final Project at college in 2021. I had focused my project entirely on music, and explored how it can be used for impressionist and abstract work. I created a long series of abstract outcomes with materials ranging from acrylic to drawing ink, before finally combining every single medium onto one large canvas, where each material represented a different genre, which I listened to while I worked, blindfolded, resulting in the outcome below.

Process:
-Alter computer settings so desktop display is in greyscale
-Fill and shade art using colour wheel, relying purely on tone, with no suggestion of colour, to create an image with depth.
-Adjust display back to RGB, revealing the final shading outcome
-Use alternative colours to create a multiplied editing layer over true colours, to create a variation of hue.

A series of The Hunger Games inspired portraits, highlighting the exterior beauty, and underlying struggles of each District within Panem, presented as propoganda (pen and ink)
The above pieces were inspired by the promotional material released by Lionsgate, to market the cinematic release of The Hunger Games, where they released Capitol-inspired propaganda of life in a selection of the 12 districts, highlighting their main trade, as well as the visual 'aesthetic' of poverty that the capitol citizens make light of. I love this photographic series a lot, due to its ability to visually communicate the dire life of the Districters, while remaining appealing to the eye of the viewer, without seeming too detached from reality, to be seen as an effective satire of the heavily biased advertising we deal with in modern day.

I take heavy inspiration from The Hunger Games series for my art, especially the novels, as the representation of feminism, wealth inequality and influence of the media on society has always spoken to me on a personal level, and has only seemed to grow more relevant with age, as politics and the state of our world .becomes more and more affected by TV, the news, and the internet.
I chose recently to create a design for the titular character of Katniss Everdeen, inspired not by the movies, but by her description in the books; highlighting small features that didn't make it into the film adaptation, such as the baggy jacket gifted by her deceased father, or her indigenous nationality, or the fact that she ties her braid down her back to keep it out of the way, instead of over her shoulder to appear more feminine. All small features that, in my opinion can make or break a character.
