It’s always a good idea to keep silent and not consent to searches.  It’s not going to “make you look more guilty.”  If they’re asking questions and trying to search you they already suspect you’re guilty of something.

Moreover…even if, like me, you think most cops are decent folks just trying to do their jobs and keep the public safe, police still human and they can still make mistakes - including mistaking you as being a criminal.  It’s extremely possible that they’ll take some innocent statement out of context and think that it fits in with some ongoing investigation of theirs.

Don’t talk without a lawyer and don’t consent to searches, no matter how innocent you are or how much you support the police.  If you really want to clear the air and help the police with their investigation, go through a lawyer.  That’s what they’re for.

The Fourth and Fifth Amendments exist for a reason.
