Hi! I’m Jannah. You can call me Jana, Teri, Trish, Banana, whatever.

I’m a Grade 12 STEM student from UPHSD-Molino.

Here are some of the recent pictures I took that looked pretty decent. Though I recently got my hair cut, because what is quarantine without having a little fun?

Okay so let’s talk about myself.

I might say I’m quite an extroverted person, though I can’t say that I’m a family person, though. I like to talk and interact with people most of the times. I like working in groups and collaborating with my peers. I like to share my thoughts, ideas, and opinions with my friends. Though there are instances that I like to have my personal space, I like to keep company.

I can’t say I’m an artistic kind of person, but I do have an eye for art. I have an interest in them and I want to hone my skills in different kinds of art like digital drawings, photography, and possibly graphic design. I’ve also been influenced by my environment since I have a ton of friends who like to draw and do different kinds of art, and I got inspired by artists I see on my social media platforms and thought, “wow, I wanna do something like this as well!”

I started having an interest in these things when I was in JHS. I took a ton of pictures of my friends and my surroundings and posted them on Instagram thinking the pictures I posted fit the aesthetic at the time. I tried practicing how to draw Chibis and cartoons when I was in 3rd grade, but I easily gave up on that because I had a short span of attention. (I’m sorry, younger me)

I’m a TV Series gal, I don’t really watch a ton of movies. But when my friends sends me some good recommendations, I really try to watch them. Some of them give me really good movies to watch and I enjoy watching them, especially when I watch it with my friends or family.

Oh, I also watch anime. I’m trying to expand my range in the film industry 😌 (jk). I’m into romance, comedy, some slice-of-life and magic anime.

In terms of school, I’m a pretty grade conscious student but I like to balance my school and social life like how I balance chemical equations. I am serious when it comes to requirements but I don’t forget to have a lil’ fun while studying. I love doing study sessions with my friends and classmates because I can bond with them. I love throwing occasional jokes with my teachers and just take a breather from all of the stresses we’ve been feeling.

Well this has been a long post.

A Reflection

MIL isn’t one of the subjects that give me a huge impact. Rather, it made me more aware of the knowledge I kind of forgot I have.

It made me more aware of how we should use media, information, and technology. We all know that there are different types of media such as our phones, computers, and televisions, but now I know that they belong to different classifications and I know which age they started in (in the evolution of media).

As times goes by, I try to fully implement the last law in MIL, which is that MIL is a dynamic process. We don’t just learn it in one day. We use media and technology, create and critic information, and the more we use it, the more we know its correct use. We make mistakes, but that’s fine, we learn from it anyway.

Not that I am very proactive in political conversations, but I feel like I can converse more properly now that I’ve been more aware to things. I strive to be literate, and I want to improve. I want to know more knowledge and apply it. I don’t want to spread misinformation, and I want to continue learning MIL.

I really liked the topic about codes, specifically the technical codes because I have an interest in photography and cinematography. I even made an analysis of a scene from a horror movie that was suggested to have amazing cinematography, and I will not disagree with that.

It may not seem that it has a huge impact now, but as these small improvements pile up, I may realize in the future how huge an impact it is to become aware of myself and the knowledge I possess.

Why are codes important?

Codes doesn’t necessarily mean those boring numbers and letters you use in programming.

These are the technical and symbolic codes we see in different literatures that helps the viewer/reader have a better grasp of what message the author is trying to send.

I have made an analysis of a certain scene from the movie The Silence of the Lambs

This movie has a phenomenal cinematography, though I haven’t really finished the film

As seen in the picture, it displays the eerie, serious mood in the scene through the pictures and the quiet sound (if you watched the movie, you will def hear this)

The height difference, eye contact, and distance between the two characters also shows their relationship with one another, with Hannibal Lester being the dominant one among the two.

The wall held up between the two characters also symbolizes their boundaries.

Films like these exhibits good use of these codes, whether technical or symbolic.

Through these codes, we are able to better appreciate the works and the messages made by the creators.

Media is everywhere

We live in a digital age, and because of it, we are exposed to different types of media, whether it be traditional or new.

It is quite evident in the picture that there are both traditional and new media existing, thus media convergence. 

Through these different types of media, we can easily access different types of information across different platforms. All of which are readily available in the comfort of our own homes.

DEEPFAKES

These kinds of videos have been trending, and it poses a huge risk for a ton of people.

But how dangerous are they?

Deepfakes are manipulated media to make someone look like a totally different person.

This is dangerous, since people can take advantage of this technology to:

Use another person’s identity and create content that can ruin their reputation

Falsify evidences

Threaten other people

Blackmail

Spread misinformation (This can happen if someone uses the face of a celebrity, politician, or a known person and use audio that can be considered controversial and/or fake news)

Deepfakes are the epitome of technology’s evolution. This may be a great thing, but we should be wary of what these particular types of technology can affect us.

The more manipulations, modifications, or alterations we create, the more harm we can cause to other people.

These software may give us freedom for the film industry, but we should also recognize its negative effects such as identity theft and cyberbullying.

Be aware, and be fair.

What you see may not be what you get.

Evolution

You might notice a quote at the top of the poster. The red queen hypothesis states that species must adapt and evolve, not just for reproductive advantage, but also to survive. This is the same case with media. 

Time moves rapidly, and information is being spread faster than ever. In the poster, you will see how media was used to share information with other people.

Media evolves along with us, the people. As we transition into a more digital-based age, media goes along with it.

Hey kids! Today we’ll read a book about Law.

Just kidding, kinda.

Let’s talk about the 5 laws of MIL

Why do we need to study this anyway? I mean I’m not taking Law school but this is required for everyone.

Basically these laws help us create a good environment for sharing thoughts, opinions, and information. It helps us improve our quality of life, be proactive, and develop cohesive social units.

Now, what are these laws?

The first law tackles about the different platforms in which we post and share our content. One thing to note is that we should never compare and judge these platforms with each other since each has their dedicated purpose.

We shouldn’t also underestimate the power of these platforms, because these platforms have an impact to different parts of our society.

Now for the second law, it says that anyone can create information. This also means that anyone have the right to know these information. This right is not limited to men or women, it is open to all. No one should be deprived of this right.

People are curious. They want to know more about one topic, and then another. Its what helps humans do and continue doing research.  

For the third law, we should be vary of the information we are reading across different platforms.

We must remember that each individual is different. 

And so, we must not assume that every individual has the same standpoints. There will be people who will agree with you, and there will be people who will disagree on your opinions towards a topic.

Another thing is that we can’t escape from biases. I’m not saying that every information we read is biased, but there are times where a set of information is in favor of one side rather than the other.

The fourth law is quite similar to the second law. I will say that it is better to know the truth than to not know it at all. As they say, the truth will set you free. The information we receive, whether we want it or not, helps us understand a certain thing. For example, I cannot understand why my friend isn’t talking to me. But if my friend shares her thoughts and feelings with me, I will understand the situation better. My reaction may not be as positive, but the awareness is there. This awareness may help us build a better foundation of our relationship in a positive perspective, or may break that bond in a negative way. Nevertheless, it is always better to know the truth rather than being blinded by lies.

And for the last law, being literate in media and information isn’t just a one-click on a button. It is a long dynamic process that one must go through. As we continue to be exposed by media and information, the more we get the grasp on how we use it correctly. We notice our wrongdoings and correct them. We learn how to socialize with other people better. We learn how to properly construct our message in a way that is cohesive and not offending. We learn how to criticize constructively and provide adequate feedback. 

We learn.
