Laios fully believes that the party can use the power of friendship to get through to a mad dungeon lord Marcille. And yes, they got through to her.

On the other hand, Laios does not believe at all that the party could use the power of friendship to get through to him as a mad dungeon lord. To the point that he directly gives Izutsumi the order to put him down asap if that shit happens and to not let the rest of the party even try to power of friendship him. And he was correct, there was not a thing the party could do to bring Laios back to his senses and if they actually got his attention he probably would have eaten them. Hell, Chilchuck almost got eaten on accident cause he was standing to close to the fucker that Laios was actually trying to eat.

Which again, I think is a very good indication of how well Laios knows himself. He's aware of what kind of wish the Demon could drag out of him as his deepest darkest desire. Or at least the one the Demon thinks works best for what it's trying to do.

And on some level it probably also says something about how Laios feels about people and his relationship to his party. Cause... Laios doesn't like people. He doesn't hate them, not anymore like he did when he was younger, but he still doesn't really like them. And while his relationship with his party is a lot better by the end of the story (they actually care about him as a person and would come back to save him if something happened) it still has issues (like Chilchuck and Marcille beating his ass for not saying what he was feeling even tho he was down in the dumps at the end of the coronation feast).
