sam was in the cage because he sacrificed himself after accidentally breaking the last seal →

sam unknowingly broke the last seal after he was manipulated by ruby who used killing lilith/avenging dean as a motivator for him (and deans abuse & rejection of sam in s4 also made ruby's work so much easier for her bc she bc through that she could be comfort/refuge/support for sam) →

sam wanted to kill lilith, and all of this happened, because of DEAN'S deal
