Lore
First up is the lore of my very first clone ocs: Mustang and Saturn, alongside Vermillion (who is quite recent). These three are batchmates, but Vermillion wasn't actually an original batchmate of Mustang and Saturn.
Mustang's and Saturn's original batchmates were Phoenix, Apex, and Moon. They were all tight knit but — when they were 5 years old (biologically 11) — a training accident resulted in Phoenix's, Apex's, and Moon's death. Obviously, this loss greatly impacted Mustang and Saturn, and their shared trauma transformed their bond from powerful to unbreakable.
Turns out Vermillion had also lost his squad around the same time, and the other two transfers, Pyres and Harmony, had experienced the same thing. The new squad experienced some hiccups amongst each other (understandably), but they eventually formed deep bonds and went on to become the top of their classes.
(I am very fond of Pyres, btw ^)
Ironically, Pyres is actually the oldest of the batch and is older than Saturn by two weeks. Mustang is technically the middle-aged brother, though he’s considered twins with Saturn since they were de-canted at roughly the same time (Mustang is younger by four seconds). Vermillion is the second youngest and Emerald is the youngest. Yet funnily enough, Vermillion is the most chaotic; Harmony is soooo calm it’s almost unnerving.
Unfortunately, Saturn had his eyes replaced with mechanical ones due to vision loss (because of retinitis pigmentosa). Since he was promising, he wasn’t recycled for the deficiency.
So as you can imagine, Pyres and Saturn are the most responsible of the five. Though Pyres frequently takes the role of eldest brother, Saturn is the one who babysits when he isn't around, lol.
Mustang, Saturn, and Vermillion were assigned to the same legion, the 324th, when they graduated. Pyres was assigned to the 104th Battalion and Harmony to the 501st. The squad regularly maintains contact with each other despite their distance.
Now, here comes Jasper! He was born a CT and was begrudgingly accepted into commander training when he began to show signs of ingenuity and capability. Before he was transferred to a new squad, Jasper’s original batch included Starfire, and the two were very close. He always made sure to keep in touch with them.
Jasper’s commander batch turned out to be a neighboring batch of Cody’s (which included Fox, Wolffe, Bly, Colt, and Gree), and since his batch was younger, Cody’s practically adopted them. Jasper’s batch included Rex (I headcanon he took commander training, ok), Doom, Ponds, and Adenn.
When Jasper’s batch was deployed to Geonosis, his original squad were listed as KIA after the battle…except for Starfire. Jasper felt intense grief and a sense of responsibility over their deaths.
After the battle, Starfire and Jasper approached each other for comfort, but their conversation ended up into an argument and, blinded by grief and anger, Starfire blamed him for their deaths.
As a result, Jasper drew a rift between them. It’s a decision he deeply regrets to this day, though he’s too afraid to confront Starfire about it. Though Jasper could’ve transferred him to another legion (he was assigned to the legion Jasper commanded, the 324th), he still had an attachment to him, and thus kept him at arms length.
Starfire also regrets blaming Jasper. But, like him, he’s afraid of approaching and apologizing, so the two have a weird relationship where they sincerely love each other but they’re too scared to reconnect (in their defense you can’t expect all clones to have 100% healthy relationships when they literally grew up in THE most unhealthy environment to exist).
Last but not least, we have Akan. He wasn't batchmates with any of my mentioned ocs and he didn’t lose anyone during training (or got transferred). Him and Jasper are quite close… if you could say that? They became close after they experienced a traumatic event together where they were stuck in the trenches, both unable to move due to shrapnel injuries (caused by a nearby detonation). Surrounded by dead brothers and the sounds of a raging battle, they found comfort in each other as they waited for rescue and medical attention (btw, Paerula is the 324th Jedi General, so she was commanding everyone else while Jasper was injured).
Though they’re close, they aren’t really openly affectionate with each other. Their own way of caring and comforting between them is by reminding each other of their duties, and the situations around them. These two are both afraid of their own minds, so focusing on the external world keeps them from spiraling.
The two went on to form the Golden Platoon. You could say the unit became the 324th’s mascot (like how Torrent Company is famous within the 501st). This platoon was formed to act as an elite unit that consisted of veterans, and included Mustang, Saturn, Vermillion, Starfire, and of course, Jasper and Akan.
The real reason why Jasper named it “Golden” is unknown… except by Starfire. Jasper told Akan it was catchy and he just went “lol ok idrc” and rolled with it, but in reality, Jasper wanted to name it that because 1. his original squad was dubbed “Golden Squad" and 2. he wanted to honor their deaths somehow. Starfire managed to piece two and two together (‘cause he’s smart like that) and figured out the real reasons. He never approached Jasper for confirmation, though. And yes, Starfire sobbed his eyes out when he heard the name.
Personalities
Jasper: reserved + melancholic
In-depth traits: On the outside, Jasper was always seen as capable, reliable, and had an air of he’s-got-his-shit-together. However, the deeper parts of him are things others rarely see. He’s always kept his melancholy and sentiment close to his chest — especially in an environment like Kamino where emotions were, more often than not, seen as a weakness. Only a handful of people did he share his deepest thoughts with: Starfire, Rex, Doom, Ponds, and Boa. He sometimes tells Akan things but not really. The two just enjoy/find comfort in each other’s presence more than anything.
As a cadet, Jasper was a perfectionist (he still is now, tbh). But as the war raged on, he became increasingly more weary. Also, because of his trauma with his original batch, he kind of pushes people away when he feels he’s being too vulnerable.
He has a love-hate relationship with shore leave. On one hand, it’s amazing that he’s away from death and other horrible conditions. On the other hand, the very safety shore leave offers also allows Jasper’s mind to retreat into itself. It’s why he kind of withdraws from everyone during leave; his mind is always too cluttered, and seeing the normal lives civvies experience just makes him… sorrowful, sometimes angry. And this terrifies him, because Jasper was raised with the mindset that sentiment = a liability.
Ironically, though, Jasper isn’t much of a stoic person. He puts up more of a calm front than anything, but if you make him angry, he will NOT hesitate to show you how angry you actually made him. He’s nice until you piss him off. Then he becomes an absolute bitch lmfao. (e.g., *cue death-glare,* *flat, snappy tone,* “go talk to someone else,” “of course, general,” “do you lack sensible reasoning?” etc.)
Mustang: fiery + passionate
In depth traits: The man is quite literally a walking wildfire of rage and fierce devotion, and he doesn't even try to hide it under charm. Mustang was always stubborn, intense, and passionately loyal. He was a handful for trainers themselves, but he wasn’t recycled since he was promising. Sure, he’ll follow orders for the most part, but he can and will rebel if he feels there's a better way. The only people he’ll actually listen to without any sour feelings is Jasper and his batchmates — mostly Saturn.
The bonds he forms never come easy, but when he actually connects with someone, he really connects with them. He will sacrifice himself for loved ones without a second thought.
However, Mustang is kind of possessive sometimes, ESPECIALLY over Saturn and Vermillion. He gets paranoid when he feels that the people he trusts prefers others over him. Yes, he knows this is a really bad, irrational trait, but he never bothered to fix it. For the most part, he pushes it down. But sometimes he can’t contain it and he ends up arguing with his s.o’s because of it (he always apologizes though, because he wants his s.o’s happiness to be first despite his feelings).
Once you get past his walls, Mustang turns from a hardened, battle-worn soldier to a giant touch-starved puppy. He’s super soft for his loved ones, and lets his humorous and brotherly side come out.
Due to past trauma I’m still figuring out, Mustang learned not every clone = brother. He refers to other clones as brothers because 1. everyone does that and 2. what else is he going to call them? But he’s not automatically open and loyal to each clone he meets. This is a stark contrast to the accepted clone culture of brotherhood, and so he usually comes across as cold, sometimes even arrogant. Those who are close with him, however, know better.
Also, Mustang is 100% prepared to square up with another clone. The amount of times he’s had (or almost had) a full blown brawl with a brother(s) cannot be counted with your fingers. HOWEVER, he rarely ever has an actual brawl with a brother he trusts. Mustang is the type where he tries his hardest to refrain his bitter emotions from s.o’s. Basically, under all that anger is a lot of love.
Saturn: gentle + selfless
In depth traits: ever since he was a cadet, Saturn was always empathetic and kind. Along with his dedication, these traits got him into medical training. Like Jasper, he was a perfectionist and would sometimes stay up late studying.
Though he shares the same sentiment as Mustang (every clone does not = brother), he doesn’t let that stop him from being kind, friendly, and supportive. He likes to give people a chance/the benefit of the doubt.
Because of his near infinite amount of patience, he rarely snaps at people, as he prefers to retreat and come back later. Still, there’ve been times where he’s thrown bedside manners out the window, but it’s few and far between. Even though he can fight and fend for himself, he prefers to rely on flight rather than fight.
He’s also a pretty private person. The only people he near-fully trusts are Mustang, Jasper, Akán, Starfire, Pyres, Vermillion, and Emerald.
Saturn is crazy perceptive. He just naturally notices people’s quirks and patterns without even trying. It’s honestly quite a useful trait and he uses it to better care for vode.
Sometimes, Saturn and Jasper write poetry together.
During downtown hours, Saturn is a major daydreamer. Don’t interrupt him or he’ll get grumpy, lol.
Vermillion: daredevil + charming
In depth traits: Vermillion’s chaotic. His ideas are either amazing or so insane it’s just flat out bad. He’s got a penchant for finding thrill in the danger (a trait that constantly has everyone stressing).
Unlike Mustang, Vermillion can charm the hell out of anyone and anything. His smile could almost make you think he wasn’t someone who could snap your neck without breaking a sweat. Though he seems like a confident person, he tends to have doubts about himself. So in a way, he looks up to Mustang because he is genuinely confident in his own abilities.
Saturn or Mustang are the first people Vermillion goes to for comfort or advice.
No matter how dire the situation is, Vermillion always seems to stay somewhat optimistic. Sometimes it pisses people off, and sometimes it’s comforting.
Akán: snarky + loyal
In depth traits: Akán is a master at pissing people off… at least, people he doesn’t like. If he dislikes you, he’ll make sure to get his point across via snarky comments and deprecating smirks. Stupid/rude people just piss him off so badly, and he gets that strong itch to shove their ego up their asses. He may not be direct about it, but you will feel the disgust in his gaze.
Despite this, Akán’s a competent captain. He may not be the most ingenious or unorthodox, but he gets the job done.
He finds great comfort in Jasper’s presence, though he doesn’t realize how much he comforts him. The two share a strong commitment to their duty, and they like to focus on the world around them then their own emotions.
Akán is arguably the least emotionally volatile of the group. He’s got coping mechanisms, but sometimes that isn’t enough to stop the cold sweat and the shaking and the sheer pain after nightmares. There have been many times where Jasper and Akán stay up talking to each other for comfort.
As a cadet, Akán was a bit arrogant. However that was shut down real quick when he actually experienced war. Sometimes, though, he does get a little too proud when someone speaks highly of him.
Even though Akán is seen as “laid-back,” he can be stern towards his men at times, and he's also protective. Really protective. If you even so much as look at his men the wrong way, Akán will make sure you never see the light of day ever again (ok, he won’t actually kill you but you get the point).
Starfire: tenacious + insecure
In depth traits: Starfire’s stubborn. Maybe not as stubborn as Mustang on the battlefield. But with relationships? Oh boy, he doesn’t give up easily. Yeah, Saturn is kind of the same way, but he’ll drop the ball far earlier than Starfire. This is also why Starfire tries coming around to Jasper every once and a while, even though it never leads anywhere.
Starfire’s a pilot, and he has a powerful connection with flying. He’s quite sentimental about it, so he likes to tell supernatural stories about it to shinies (even though everyone knows it’s osik).
Starfire’s closer with his pilot squadron than with my mentioned ocs. He still has a connection with them, though — mainly Saturn, Jasper (kind of), and Vermillion.
Starfire’s quite friendly even though he’s a little afraid to bond with people. This is very much because of his trauma with Jasper and his squad. His relationship with him and the death of his batchmates is a very touchy subject he rarely speaks on (like Jasper).
During downtimes, Starfire usually plays sabacc with other clones. Over time, he’s become a bit of a master at it and many like to have a kick at trying to beat him. So far, no one’s had any luck.
He was originally named Star but changed it to Starfire because 1. he's a pilot and he loves space and 2. he almost got blown up once.
