Welcome! My name's Melody, I'm 30 and use they/them pronouns. This blog is most comfortably 20+ and I don't follow if your age or a simple "18+" isn't listed somewhere on your blog. It's not going to come up here probably but for people's comfort, I'm anti fascist and everything therein, and pro socialism. My beliefs are leftist and I love and support all queer people.

Generally about me; I'm a retired classical musician and now professional author who spends too much time on fic and not enough on actually publishing anything. I'll be attending college for Computer Information Systems in the fall! I'm disabled with a cluster of autoimmune diseases and love projecting my suffering on my favorite blorbos. I'm most recently identifying as nonbinary trans, but for over a decade I identified as a trans man. I don't see my shift in identities as a "detransition" and will never use transmedicalist language. Obviously anti terf and extremely pro trans umbrella.

I'm extremely new to the Witcher fandom but, as usual, I've already begun writing so. Here we are lmao. I highly favor the books and games over the Netflix series but recognize that most people are familiar with the source material through the show and fic. My gripes with the show aside, my fics will always reflect the books and games characterizations and plots, as I simply enjoy them more. Despite this, I'll refer to Jaskier as Jaskier since that's what most people are familiar with (despite this breaking my heart). I may be self indulgent and use Dandelion in my actual fics however... To be seen.

Current projects: 1) Long fic with the working title "Companion in Misery" - Geraskier / Book/Game Canon compliant AU. Soulmates can feel each other's pain trope. Probably going to involve a polycule with Yennefer as a hostage in the future, potentially something with Eskel as well because I love him dearly. 2) No tag for it but I'm self indulgently picking at a Dragon Age/Witcher crossover wherein Garret Hawke is a cat Witcher and Anders is a vampire. Extremely niche, I know.

The term "liberal arts," at least according to my college professor, originates from the first schools, the first organized learning. School was only for liberated men; rich men and boys, who could afford the leisure time to sit around and learn.

Trained musicians and artists are included in this. For most of history, if you were trained as an artist, you were either 1. A well-off man yourself or 2. Sponsored by a wealthy patron.

We know in the Witcher books that Dandelion, Julian, is the first one. He was born to a wealthy family and holds a title. That is how and why he is a classically trained bard who writes books and teaches at Oxenfurt sometimes. His parents invested a LOT into his education; it was not a choice, for him, he was forced to take this path. I remember a mention of Dandelion having literacy beat into him as a boy?

So, yes. Julian's parents wanted him to be educated, including in music, sent him to Oxenfurt, all of it. They would not have looked down on music, because skilled music was solely the purview of the rich. It does not make sense to write his family as disdainful of music because we know they put a lot of resources into his musical education from an early age.

The thing that his family would not like is that Julian chose to spend his life largely OUT of courts, plays his music for and panders to "common" people, champions a witcher, and shirks his duties as Viscount. The fact that he's a musician is not the problem, it's what he's doing with those skills.

What I think the show, and a lot of people who haven't read the books, miss about Dandelion and Geralt's relationship is that they aren't parallels, they're foils. They have diametrically opposed goals in life and philosophies and while yes, Dandelion will default to Geralt's belief system insofar as monsters, and Geralt will concede to let Dandelion lead in courtly situations, neither of them ever fully agree with each other and that's what their friendship is about. Philosophy. They debate constantly. They call each other out on perceived bullshit constantly. Dandelion is never afraid to call Geralt stupid and tell him exactly why he thinks so, and Geralt lets Dandelion's opinions effect him, much more than the average person. They would die for each other, have killed for each other, have stolen for each other, but there are a lot of things they fundamentally disagree on. Dandelion is the narrative vehicle we see Geralt's faults through, the lens of a common man with common, hedonistic goals, who wants to share in joy with Geralt, despite Geralt's stubborn insistence that he never know what joy is.

Yeah I think Netflix lost this bit in adaption, book Geralt struck me as someone who doesn’t talk a lot with most people bc he doesn’t know/trust them (alternatively, he might not think his view are worth sharing). I think most people could tell Geralt is pretty perceptive but I think he turns these ideas over and over in his little head. He ruminates. Ponders. Jaskier’s just one of the few people who see this quality and gets to know what Geralt thinks *about*.

Aside from the narrative/character themes in the show vs the book, the biggest difference between book Geralt and show Geralt to me is exactly how much he talks. In the books, I would venture to call him a certified yapper at times. He doesn't necessarily love the sound of his own voice but he loves thinking out loud. He'll suffer polite conversation for about 3 minutes before launching into some philosophical observation that's only tangentially related to the event at hand. But he does also ruminate a lot -- there's a lot he doesn't say, which isn't contradictory, but rather a testament to how much he perceives, as you said. Geralt is both the main character and narrator of the series, in internal dialogue and external commentary. There's the constant running theme that the reader is missing out on something until Geralt verbally points it out in a "gotcha" moment to whoever he's talking to.

And yes! It was Dandelion who told Geralt he'd make a good priest, lack of faith notwithstanding. Because all of his "scruples and morals" lmao. I think that moment is another delightful foil/contrast moment between Dandelion and Geralt, on top of saying a lot about Geralt's character in and of itself. Priests are reticent, self denying, chaste with pleasure - Dandelion is the complete opposite.

I started watching the Netflix show out of morbid curiosity and I'm a little bit through season 2 now. My general review without getting into the nitty gritty comparisons of books vs show is that, to me, they often sacrifice character motivation for narrative intrigue, grimdark vibes, or viewer accessibility.

The books are incredibly character driven. The entire narrative serves the singular purpose of bearing Geralt's struggles plain and while the show occasionally highlights the parallels between monsters and Geralt, and nonhumans and Geralt, literally and politically, I often feel like a lot is left out by character choices. Frequently, lines or the general conversation flow will be changed drastically to serve another purpose and entirely change the meaning.

I don't inherently mind the retelling of these individual stories to have the narrative be more impactful/intriguing/understandable to a visual media audience, I'm not saying everything should have been left 100% intact without craft, but I do think a lot of the metaphors and meaning that the show seems to have, they've stumbled into by coincidence, not choice.
