feb. 3 ‘21 - well i’m halfway into the second week of the semester & my classes seem to be going ok. in the gender & women’s studies class i’m taking we’re currently reading feminism is for everybody by bell hooks, and i’m enjoying it. in other news, my fig tree grew a few new leaves 🌿
good morning (afternoon) tumblr!
it's been a loooong time since i checked studyblr. I've been busy at university, but i wanted to come back and use this blog as a form of holding myself accountable for my work, and getting motivation to be successful by seeing all the other hard-workers here!
i just did some journalling, now I'm about to catch up on psychology lectures! i definitely have more pressing work to do, but these lectures are an easy way for me to get back into the study mindset lol.
p.s. - I'd love to have studyblr mutuals, so if you're also looking for moots, feel free to msg me or reply to this post!
An Overview of Note-Taking Styles
Note-taking is one of the most essential skills a student should master. It allows you to record and review information to be used in the future. But what’s the best way to do so? Here’s an overview of note-taking styles that can help you maximize your learning!
seems like just yesterday when i said goodbye to may, and yet here i am again, welcoming in july. very grateful for the time/capability to properly reflect & remember the months that pass 🌼
‘eat the frog' method
Hi all, it’s werelivingarts. I just stumbled across this method called ‘eat the frog’, which means you get the most difficult or important task out of your way first. I actually have been using this method for a long time, hope this post gives you a new way of managing your time and productivity! 😜 ❤️
“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” – Mark Twain
8 Ways to Get Past Writers Block
Read. Read a lot. Read everything you can, but don’t read like a reader, read like a writer. If you’re doing it right, there’s nothing that gets the juices flowing quite as well. This is the way you develop your style; you see things you like and things you don’t like in books and you put these values into your writing.
Read a good book. Reading a good book is why you got into writing in the first place, right? There’s something new you can learn from every book. You can see what works well and what you ARE doing. It’s inspiring to read good writing and it makes you want to try harder where you might be lacking.
Read a bad book. Not only will reading a bad published book make the world feel more hopeful, but it will make you see what you can avoid doing in your novel and what you KNOW you can do better than them.
Find other writers. Connecting with other writers is so important, whether online or in person. Not only is it nice to able to share your writing, but knowing you have a group or person to depend on with your same goals in mind is motivating. Even just talking through ideas with someone tends to yield more powerful results, and they have their own tips and trick they’ve learned that may help you.
Break it up. Chapters are there for both readers and writers. If you can get through one chapter, you can get through them all. Even make a different word document for each chapter if you need to. It will stop you more from going back and getting caught up in your plot holes that occurred fifty pages earlier.
Read the last page you wrote. The darkest of my writers block days have been stopped with this technique. Tell yourself you’ll just read the last page, maybe edit some phrasing. Then write the next page. Stopping off in the middle of a sentence helps as well. All this settles you into your story gently and gets you involved and editing a more polished draft at the end.
Keep notes. Texts messages can be sent to your email. Finding a pen and paper is hard sometimes, so you can just text ideas to your email. Not only is this handy to get fresh ideas down, but every time you check your email you’ll see these awesome ideas. Or keep a notebook if that works for you. Or write in the margins of your school work. Just get the ideas out.
Immerse yourself. The reason you started your story is because you have such a huge passion for it. What you need to do is remind yourself of these reasons as much as possible. Surround yourself with writing and creativity. Think about how your characters would respond to situations you find yourself in. Describe people you see in the streets as you would if you were introducing them to a novel. Look for people that look like your characters. Tell your friends about your book, give them your ideas. If your life isn’t a little bit about your story, you’re not doing it right.

for as much as studyblr may have its faults, it’s a pretty sizable online space that tells young girls that the absolute coolest thing you can do is be smart and work hard and believe in yourself and i think that’s pretty great
hello!! as an online college student, i’ve been lucky enough to already have some experience with online schooling, so i’m here to offer all my advice for the students of quarantined schools! due to the covid-19 outbreak, it’s been very difficult for many who’ve had to switch to online school. however, there are many way to make it simpler and faster, and i’m here to give my best tips!!
firstly, make a list. whether you’re more comfortable with a physical to-do list or a virtual calendar to schedule things out (i’ve used google calendar almost my whole life but i just got the app elisi and it’s beautiful, minimalist, and easy to use! available on pretty much every device). planning out your work is the most efficient way to get it done.
don’t try to do everything at once. while it’s best to get things done soon, space out your work efficiently so you don’t feel overwhelmed!
create a simple, comfortable study space. it doesn’t have to be a perfectly organized desk or gorgeous setup at the kitchen table; i do all of my college work from my bed with a comfy throw blanket and fairy lights up. the most important thing is that you are in the right position to do work, you are comfortable, and that you are able to keep everything you need close to you.
work in chunks. to best knock out your work, take it an hour at a time with 10 to 15 minute breaks in between. make some tea, get a snack, stay energized.
drink lots of water. you are not immune to the coronavirus. it’s also easier to stay energized and focused when you’re hydrated.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR INSTRUCTORS. at first i was very timid to communicate back and forth with my professors when something was wrong but i have learned that it is the most important thing to have good communication. if you don’t understand a concept, have trouble with the online system, or just need general help in your academics, sending them an email is the best way to solve the problem.
reward yourself!! once you’ve finished an assignment, give yourself a little treat (maybe a half hour of minecraft or your favorite snack to munch on!!)–it’s the best way to encourage your mind to work harder.
don’t work too late. you’re off from school. unless it’s the night of the due date, don’t push yourself until it’s done. the morning is just a sleep away.
these are some good playlists for background music.
another important tip! communicate with your classmates in case you don’t understand something. everybody learns differently and some pick up info different than others.
make fancy notes!! get fancy with your stationery!! you have plenty of time now and can go bonkers with your beautiful notes.
continue to check your temperature and monitor symptoms. your school has closed for a reason. your safety and health are important.
retain a relatively normal sleep schedule, similar to the one you have when you normally go to school. slipping out of your regular sleep cycle can and will kick your ass when it’s time to go back.
lastly, eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner. take a nap when you’re tired. remember to go to the bathroom and keep your water filled. take care of yourself.
if i think of anything else to add, i will!! just wanted to bring forth my advice in hopes that it benefits anybody who is at home b/c of quarantine or school cancellation :)
We need to dismantle the systems in place that allow white people to get away with offering black people sub-par services based on the excuse that our bodies are more difficult to work with. Black hair is not more difficult than white hair, it simply requires a different skill set. Tattooing vibrant tattoos on black skin isn’t more difficult than tattooing white skin, it simply requires a different skill set. Photographing black people isn’t more difficult than photographing white people, it simply requires an understanding of photography. Doing makeup on black skin isn’t more difficult than doing makeup on white skin, it simply requires different products. Working with black people is not more difficult than working with white people you’ve all just been taught that it’s not valuable and therefore not worth learning how.
