Magical Realism Movies
October is almost here and that means it’s time for my favorite kind of flicks: the not-so-tall tales, the witchy, the folksy, the fantastical, the magical kind that could happen to you or me at any time or place. These are my not-quite-Halloween magical movie favorites.
1. Practical Magic
Based on one of my favorite books by author Alice Hoffman and my favorite book-to-movie adaptation. Plant rosemary by your garden gate and listen to Stevie Nicks on repeat.
2. Fried Green Tomatoes
Need to get rid of a guy with no evidence? Feed him to the sheriff. Apply BBQ sauce liberally. Watch out for bee charmers and Kathy Bates. It’s gay. Like, really gay.
3. Big Fish
I am an absolute sucker for any movie with a circus tie-in. It’s not polite to discuss religion or politics at the dinner table, you never know who you’re gonna offend. (Also see Water for Elephants and The Greatest Showman for more circus faves).
4. Meet Joe Black
The devil in disguise. That party at the end? Inspired my wedding. Will never look at peanut butter the same way.
5. Secondhand Lions
Because sometimes you need fantastic fairy tales and eccentric uncles to get through an otherwise troubled life. Don’t buy seeds from a traveling salesman. Used lions are ok though.
6. The Butcher’s Wife
I only recently found this gem that features so many of my favorite tropes and also takes place in NYC. Is pure 90s gold.
7. Age of Adaline
The fashion alone!!! Exceptional outfits. I love Blake’s voice. Keep it in the family, kids.
8. Stardust
I mean, Robert De Niro as a fancy pirate and Michelle Pfeiffer as an evil witch? Claire Danes as a star and Charlie Cox in all his adorable ness? Sign me the fuck up.
9. Kate and Leopold
Need at least one modern-day time travel movie on this list. Every time I step into an Otis elevator, I think of this. Yes, it’s a pure romantic comedy. No, I don’t care. HUGH.
10. August Rush
Maybe the most serious on this list (featuring a primely unfunny Robin Williams as a villian), this movie is for music lovers and anyone who never gives up hope even when everyone tells you to.
Honorable Mentions:
Chocolat
Midnight in Paris
Field of Dreams
Just Like Heaven
Simply Irresistable
Ghost
Tuck Everlasting
The Rookie
Reblog with yours, I’m always looking for more to add to this collection. They’re simply perfect for a rainy fall day.
“You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn’t true. I know a lot about love. I’ve seen it, centuries and centuries of it, and it was the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All those wars. Pain, lies, hate… It made me want to turn away and never look down again. But when I see the way that mankind loves… You could search to the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So yes, I know that love is unconditional. But I also know that it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable and strangely easy to mistake for loathing, and… What I’m trying to say, Tristan is… I think I love you. Is this love, Tristan? I never imagined I’d know it for myself. My heart… It feels like my chest can barely contain it. Like it’s trying to escape because it doesn’t belong to me any more. It belongs to you. And if you wanted it, I’d wish for nothing in exchange - no gifts. No goods. No demonstrations of devotion. Nothing but knowing you loved me too. Just your heart, in exchange for mine.”
— Neil Gaiman, Stardust
“I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring (via amargedom)
"They say they miss the old me, maybe they are the ones who killed the old me."
Heoynn

“Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyway.”
- Maxon, The Selection (The One)
These books were so perfect!!
“She wasn’t doing a thing that I could see, except standing there leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together.”
J.D. Salinger, “A Girl I Knew”
“in every reality where there is a you and there is a me I swear, we will find each other because the record should matter and we are etched on each other’s souls across space, across times, across the stars in the end or in the beginning or simply in the quiet moments my heartbeat sounds like whatever name you like best”
