Ā Ā Ā Ā John drug his hand over his face before letting out an exasperated sigh. He lifted his mug to his lips and took another sip.
ā I just donāt know what Iāve done wrong. ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā He sighed.
ā I mean, I thought that Iād done everything right. And itās --Iām just so tired. What else am I supposed to do? ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā After a moment and another sip of his tea, he met the gaze of the one sitting next to him.
" I'm sorry I'm unloading all this right now. Um...what was your name again? "
" I really hate to ask, but what the hell is going on? "

šTaking a swim on an uninhabited plot of beach, noticing ripples in the water
šæAn old-fashioned plantation with secretive locals and a bitter history

šThe sad silence after a violent storm, debris and wreckage everywhere
šAn attic full of musty clothes and antiques belonging to someone long-dead
ā A snowstorm locking everyone in their homes, with electricity flickering

šInside of a re-occurring nightmare had time and time again
āTaking a long walk with an umbrella, struggling with a low, low mood
āAt a quiet cafe, but unfamiliar folk are whispering and staring
šµA winding road through the desert with only one dingy hotel, itsĀ āvacancyā light flickering red
š¤Dreaming of scraping nails gainst the window glass, and waking to still hear it

Johns eyes were still fuzzy from sleep as he heard Mina tell him to get his clothes on. At first he was confused. Where was he? How had he gotten here? What happened?
The questions did not become any clearer as his head did.
āWhere am I?ā he asked, trying to quell the panic that was building up inside him. āWhat happened?ā

Ā Ā Ā Gray clouds seemed to roll into the sky faster than usual on the day John realised what had been happening. He had always been observant, liked to think he was always aware of what was going on around him. And he had felt that something had been off, sure. Heād had suspicions. But now he was certain. Someone was following him.
Ā Ā Ā The sky opened and it began to drizzle as he walked to nowhere in particular, forcing himself to keep a normal pace. The man -was it a man? It could just as well be a woman, the figure was so shrouded- had been tailing him for several blocks now. He'd noticed the same figure following close behind several days prior, and had kept tabs on them during his daily walks ever since. And, undeniably, the same covered figure -was it the same figure? Or was it a different person each day, all working toward the same cause?- had been following him. They kept a close distance, but never too close. John could tell that they were professional.
Ā Ā Ā His first thought had been government. Mycroft had sent for him in similar overtly mysterious ways many times before. But since Sherlock's funeral, he hadn't heard word from Mycroft or any of his accomplices. Besides, whenever Mycroft had sent for him in the past, it had always been immediate, and never lasted over the course of several days.
Ā Ā Ā It was impossible to tell how long these people had been watching John. He'd only noticed them a few days ago, but how long had they been at it before then? He hadn't exactly been in the best state of mind lately. It would have been easy to be so lost in his own head that he neglected to watch the world around him. Regardless of how long it had been, he knew that it was something, well, not good. He had a feeling, and his feelings were usually right on matters such as these.
Ā Ā Ā As the rain began to pick up, John quickly made his way off the sidewalk and found shelter under a nearby tree. He thought through his options, flipping through the possibilities and which would be the best way to handle this. If it was just the one person, John may be able to take them. But he knew it wouldn't just be the one. Surely there would be others around, others that he could not see. Yet he was in public, around other people, possible witnesses, so the likelihood of an ambush was unlikely. That possibility, however, was never zero.
Ā Ā Ā Fishing his mobile out of his pocket, he did the only thing he thought feasible. Was it foolish, bringing someone else into what could possibly be so dangerous? Perhaps. But he did it anyway. He knew he could trust her, knew she could handle herself. And he knew she could help.
Ā Ā Ā The line rang twice before a voice came through on the other end. He did his best to sound casual, unassuming.
" Mina? "
