Could there really be a multi-verse out there?

well, there’s at least an alternate reality. spoiler alert: tony doesn’t die in this one.

The snap? It happened. Tony Stark was able to hold to life by the skin of his teeth, arm removed quickly so the rest of his body could be healed. And with his snap he not only brought back those that Thanos killed… but some others as well, though who knows who all that might include. And who knows what else it might have done.

Steve came back despite expressing to Bucky he still didn’t feel right in the century– but how long he spent out of time is uncertain. He’s currently out of commission and looking after Tony, leaving the shield for Sam to wield.

The heroes are still in the area, healing from their battle and watching others step up in their absence. Peter Parker and Harley Keener are two of the up and comings. Falcon, War Machine, and the others are taking charge over the team as a whole. The Guardians, Asgardians, and those like Captain Marvel come and go as they like, sticking around for the fights and the occasional game night. There’s even some new faces around Avengers Tower even if old ones seem to be scarce. 

Right now.. the most important thing for everyone is healing from losses and returns and the battle fought.

If someone was coming for it, he didn’t want them to come straight for Dick’s wing of the asylum. “I just… worry.. there are men here I wouldn’t trust not to take a chance to hurt something I love,” he said quietly, kissing the man’s hair.

Looking to the static-y image, Jason shook his head. “Just… just security footage…”

“I’ll be okay. The ones I’ve met around here have been pretty nice so far. I think they’re scared of you though." 

Dick leaned up to peck Jason on the cheek, looking the taller man over to ake sure there hadn’t been any injuries added since the last time he’d seen him. Touching Jason’s arm, he leaned over a little to get a look at the screen. 

"Footage of…? ”

“They ought to be. I’d kill them if they hurt you,” Jason said in a way so gentle it hardly sounded violent. A small smile as he watched the other looking him over. He was used to Dick tending to him, even when he didn’t tell him he was hurt.

“Ah...” the smile went away, “Of... of them... their pressing in further every night, Dick... they.. they’re gonna find us..” His voice was quiet, shoulders sagging. “Their coming to take you away... I know it.”

“I will wear it during fencing, my dear Lord Wayne,” Jason said with a flash of a smile. He couldn’t wait to show off the favor, to have people see that he was the one that earned the prince’s interest, that he would be the one that kept it because he would. At the end of the season, he would have the Prince’s hand. He was set on it… he had to complete the arrangement before he made the trip home. His father would certainly insist on the ceremony being held in the Sionis kingdom and perhaps he would disguise it in a way until all the Wayne’s retreated…

He didn’t expect the blush that swept his cheeks and he cleared his throat. “I… I do care for her very much. She was father’s first real gift to me when I was brought into the royal household. I don’t have any siblings and Father is rather strict about who I may socialize with so I suppose in a way it caused me to care very much for what I had. I’ve hardly gone a day without riding.”

Pausing to let Dick speak to the staff, Jason straightened, looking absolutely cocky to be with the prince on his arm. And oh, he was, leading him towards the stables.

“He chooses who you can socialize with?” Dick frowned a little at that, the attention back on Jason after leaving his message, letting the taller man take the lead to the stables.  If he were to choose Jason to be married to, he knew it would be Jason’s Kingdom he would be living in and from the way it sounded, he wouldn’t get along well with the king. Not that it mattered as long as he got along with his husband, really. He just hoped that Jason didn’t turn out too much like his father. 

He was optimistic that his own influence might help that happening. 

So he smiled, giving the arm he was practically hugging a little squeeze in reassurance. 

“I’m a fairly social person by nature. You can make up for lost time by spending it with me while you’re visiting.”

“There are a lot of criminals within the gates. It’s from concern, really– when I venture out, or when we have visitors, I have free range,” Jason told him easily though it wasn’t true. He just didn’t want the man worried, he didn’t want him to be scared away. He really did enjoy Dick, he wanted to have the companionship... but more over he was afraid to go back without a promise of marriage. “He means well. Only having one son makes him too protective, I fear.”

The little squeeze made him smile as he went. “I suppose I can’t argue that. I rather enjoy your company.”

“I would like to take every opportunity I might to impress you. Is that not how courting works, to show you I am the best man suited for your hand,” Jason teased as he led the man in a stroll down the corridor looking quite proud.

The comment had him surprised but he quickly tried to cover it, pretending his cheeks hadn’t gained a color of pink his father would call shameful. “No, I have not received any offers. Of course if I had, I’d politely decline. Yours is the only favor I might have the honor to carry.” A little grin at the mention of his horse. “If I wasn’t worried for her, I’d compete in jousting as well but last time I watched a tourney the horses were injured during it… I’ve raised her from a foal, and though it might be soft to be so attached, I’m not willing to make the risk. Of course I’d be happy to take you on a ride. She’s sturdy enough to hold the both of us.”

Dick smiled softly. Jason sure was set on courting him and the determination he had was cute. There were others who were determined but Dick never showed them the time of day and often turned them down until they gave up. Jason was the first to catch his attention and he was happy that the interest was returned.

“Then I would be honored if you carried my favor in any of the events you participate in this week. I’ll be cheering for you.” He had a scarf on him to give to Jason to wear to show that he’d been favored already. One of his favorite scarves in his favorite shade of blue but he would wait until after he saw the horse Jason was so proud of. 

“I don’t think it’s soft at all. I think it shows that one cares and has compassion. If you show that much care for your horse, I can only imagine how wonderful a father you’d be.” Dick flushed a little at the thought before flagging down one of the staff as they walked by. 

“If anyone comes looking for me, let them know I’m accompanying Lord Sionis out for a ride. I’ll be back before dinner."

It seemed strange that perfume could even be commissioned. Really, it did, when usually he watched his brother buy Barbara fancy bottles in retail stores. More over it seemed weird that Roman commissioned perfume when the guy smelled like leather and grease and nothing but leather and grease-- a smell that Jason hated becoming used to, though he was. 

“Of course... Ah, out of curiosity, what kinda perfume is a drug lord takin’ time to have made. I don’t think he’s got any girlfriends.” Strippers, prostitutes, call girls, yes. But not a girlfriend.

“You and I got different lives, Rosie, similar as they might be,” he murmured. He didn’t want to do this, really didn’t even want to have his own business. Jason would rather go to school, would rather do something productive, not destructive. “I’ve run off enough times t’know that I ain’t gettin’ out. But it’s fine. One day dad’ll be gone and the business will be mine.” And I’ll rip it to fucking shreds. 

He can feel the raised skin under his fingers at the back of his neck, mostly covered by a high collar. His second warning, the branded skull. Meant to spot, if he was somewhere he shouldn’t be. The first ‘warning’ was easily hidden. The next, he had been told, he wouldn’t be able to hide without wearing his mask. 

“I say we stay outta it,” he grumbled, fininshing loading his gun and putting it in the holster on his hip. “If they kill each other, so be it.”

Jason chuckled at that. “I have no doubts in your classes’ catchin’ ability, Mr. Grayson.” He rocked on his heels a moment, just smiling like a damn idiot before he got back in his head, walking towards the door. 

“Yeah? That’d be pretty great actually, think ya can manage it all?”

Jason nodded. “I mean... If I was well enough, I’d probably be out... ‘course runnin’ around with snow and ice is what landed me in Alfred’s capable hands for... however long he thinks I gotta be here, I guess.”

“I have people that nose around after me, whether it’s a bird or a baddie, I don’t really like anyone knowin’ my business whether I know ‘em or not,” he grumbled out, rolling his eyes at the comment. It was more a force of habit. Dealing around crime alley, he usually did just talk to kids. Teenagers, lost boys and girls, children without parents, runaways. At this point everyone was kid if he was talking friendly and it wasn’t Dick Grayson or one of the girls. Or Bruce, but that talk wasn’t usually friendly. “Thanks, it’ll be useful... and don’t worry on it, me and the bat have history and I ain’t up to tell stories.

In your honest unbiased opinion Jason who is cooler, Tony or Bruce?

“I mean, they’re kinda both rich assholes, aren’t they? Tony Stark’s got cool gear but so does B.... I feel like this is one of those questions that just has no answer.”

He thinks Bruce is cooler but will forever refuse to admit that.

He had been watching the video footage for months. The Bat was still trying too break his defense. And Jason knew why. His perfect first son was trapped by the Arkham Knight, the Robin gone wrong. 

He guessed the fact that Dick wanted to stay wouldn’t matter if got in…

That was… if he really wanted to stay.

Jason’s hand’s held his heavy head. He wasn’t in the space he had set up for Dick to live in (a piece of hall once reserved for high profile patients, bigger rooms and a private staff kitchen area that made the perfect home space and a music room for Dickie) so he was surprised when a hand settled on his shoulder. He looked up, teary eyed, and when he saw Dick he bit his lip. 

“You… you shouldn’t be out here, pretty bird… S’not safe…”

Jason was kind enough to give him far more room than he needed when he agreed to stay. He really only needed a room or two. One for himself and one for his music but Jason had given him nearly a little apartments worth there. But all that room for just him made him a little stir crazy.

So he wandered. Most of the men in Jason’s employment ignored him. Some were nice enough to talk a little but he figured they were mostly afraid of Jason threatening them.

He smiled when he finally found where Jason was but the younger man didn’t look very happy and it was concerning. The look on his face when he looked at Dick made the older mans chest hurt.

“How’s it not safe? You’re here.” He smiled faintly. “What’re you watching Jay?”

Jason smiled widely and leaned in a little, speaking low and sultry, absolutely turning on the charm now.

“If it would please you, I could certainly try to fight myself with swords… but perhaps, since I am this honored suitor, I can just escort you to dinner tonight if you might allow my bold nature.”

The prince smiled, covering his mouth as he chuckled. How bold. Most tried but tripped over their words or were too far too pushy.  Jason was like that story with the bears; just right.

“I would be honored if you escorted me.”

Jason looked ecstatic... and he was, surprising even himself a little. But this Prince was a prize, one he would covet and jealously protect. It was a way to win his father’s approval but more than that... this was his chance to have someone, really have someone that he could speak to. That he could enjoy and feel compassion from.

“I’ll meet you outside of your chambers tonight before the last call has been made... I do want to be seen with such a handsome man on my arm.”

The kid had been living on the streets for a while. Better than going into the system, he figured, but it certainly made living… difficult. But he did what he had to. The parents he had had inadvertently taught him how to survive.

Of course, Gotham had it’s dangers. Thugs walking the streets, drug dealers, people who literally made kids disappear to who knew where… Jason was pretty good at avoiding people, though, climbing up to the rooftops. Of course, the rooftops were full of other interesting people… namely a man dressed as a Bat. Who he also tried to avoid, really– after all, the guy worked with the police and the police would give him to social services. Sometimes, things couldn’t be avoided, though.

Really he should’ve been happy to see a vigilante after being grabbed by some robber who thought Jason had ‘seen too much’ to just go along. He could’ve run off while the Batman took down the criminal…. but watching the guy fight was pretty cool, so… 

“Shit,” he smiled once it was all said and done, his knapsack of meager belongings in his hand, “That was really cool… Did you used t’take karate or somethin’ Mr. Batman..?”

Batman rightened his glove after the thug was lying at his feet, unconscious for a little while.

Slowly, he turned his head to the boy he had saved, the child apparently eager to talk to him. Interesting. Most children had run from him so far.

Turning fully, he looked the boy up and down. “I’ve taken many lessons and teachers,” he replied in a calm voice while he pulled something out of his belt and placed it on the criminal’s jacket, a lazy blinking light marking his position.

“It’s a bit late for you to be outside.”

Jason was used to the dark, knew things scarier than monsters and the Batman wasn’t scary. He helped people, had just saved him. Saved people like him everyday.

“What sorta lessons?” Jason asked curiously, looking up at the cowled man with big eyes. He was talking to a hero, a real one. His mom used to say that Batman would make things okay when his dad was mean... and eventually, his dad got caught and got put away. So, that was something, right?

Biting his lip, the boy rocked on his heels, suddenly looking down to avoid eye contact. “Um... my.. my momma sent me to get her somethin’ at the store ‘cause she don’t feel good anymore.” A lie. But when his mom had still been alive it had been an often occurrence. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to bother you or nothin’.”

“My Lord Wayne,” Jason greeted with a wide wolfish smile as the prince came to him, offering his arm to the man.

A soft hum left him. “My father believes one should reserve his talents for the battlefield as not to show one’s weakness or give away one’s strength… however, I have eyes to impress and father is not here.” Word would reach, though. He knew it would. If Jason competed and won, he’d surely receive a lashing. If he lost…. But if he could win the hand of Prince Richard, he was sure all would be forgiven. 

“I may take part in the fencing. I’m rather good with swords… I do not believe your father is holding a horse race, which is a shame. I might take part in that as well, just to show off my mare.”

Dick smiled and happily took the taller mans arm. 

“Oh? So you’re going to use this as an opportunity to impress me?”  To be honest, Dick was sort of looking forward to seeing Jason show off. Bruce looked ready to pop a vein in his forehead when Jason had escorted him to dinner and Dick thought it was hilarious. Plus there were several others participating that were trying to court him. He wanted to see Jason show them up. 

“I was asking because a lot of the nobility, mostly the women, choose one of the participants to carry their favor. I was hoping that no one had offered you theirs yet.” Because Dick very much wanted to pick Jason as his. “I would also like to see this mare you’re so proud of.”

Jason followed along-- well, was dragged along-- rolling his eyes. “Roy what the fuck is... Oh shit,” he swore, looking up at the fucking billboard. Glaring eyes turned to Roy. “You got us a 1-800 number? What sorta sell out heroes are we s’posed t’be?”

“I mean, not smart enough to get off the streets... but ya do what ya can, right?” Jason asked with a half smile, perking up when he saw someone turning into the alley. “Think this is our guy.”
