What is the scariest game you've ever played?
Feed your dashboard by answering my question, blogger.
I don’t tend to play many scary games, so I would most likely say something like FNAF or Paranormica on Roblox. However I should definitely play more scary games!

Apologies if you have answered this before, but where have you found R.L. Stevenson’s responses to Myer’s letters about Strange Case? I want to read them but I am unable to find them. I might just be bad at googling.
I found them mentioned in Arata's essay The Sedulous Ape. Here are some screenshots of note:
And sorry for not answering earlier @jayshypocrisy !!!! It's been a busy couple of months for me.
After some digging, I finally found the full exchange between Myers and RLS!
From Robert Louis Stevenson: The Critical Heritage, you can read here!
This is so funny btw Myers is like “it’s great but why’d you mix this one up” and Stevenson was like “thank you for the raving reviews. I was on a deadline and also on coke. not editing anything btw”
the sheer AUDACITY of this bitch to write multiple letters to the author about how he’s mad that his headcanons weren’t canon in the text is a level of fandombrain that I had thought to be nonexistent in the days before twitter. some of his gripes are understandable (ex. why did hyde keep half of the murder weapon, why was carew in that part of town, etc) but most of this is just…complaining about the characters having self-contradictory traits. in the People Have Self-Contradictory Traits book.
he’s mad that hyde doesn’t fit his ideas for the character? that hyde bought a painting, fixed a cup of tea, and has Jekyll’s handwriting? that he’s not canonically plural??
I would shrivel up and die of embarrassment at the thought of writing to an author who was still very much alive to demand that the work be changed to suit my headcanons. next time I’m shy about criticizing something perhaps I ought to channel the egoistic boldness of this random victorian man
FR I gotta admire Stevenson’s patience though. I feel like a lot of his self admitted mistakes can have Watsonian explanations, though. Hyde wasn’t thinking straight at the time of the murder. Carew, like all other characters, might have things to hide and do things that don’t fit the reader’s image of a well-liked MP. Humans are contradictory and strange and a little dumb; to me Strange Case is a celebration of how life isn’t as simple as we’d like it to be, and why life is truly celebrated by reveling in said complexity. But it would be weird if I walked up to Stevenson while he was alive and demanded he concede that’s the message when he might have had other things in mind. Such as, for instance, that he forgot to clarify a lot of stuff because he had to turn a massive incoherent manuscript into a sixty page mystery book in like four months, while feverish.
Dunno. There’s a difference between me saying Jekyll has some plural traits and Myers complaining to the guy who made him that he isn’t plural enough for his taste and it should be changed. That’s weird! And entitled! And way more ableist than what Stevenson put to paper!
EXACTLY. like i would love to ask Stevenson what he thought watsonian explanations could be for the plot snafus that he made for doylist reasons, just to get more info on how he was envisioning the characters and how he might change things if he could. I’d love to get the inside scoop on what he thought was going through Hyde’s head (ex. the bit where he explains he figured jekyllhyde was tidying the room as a way to keep occupied while freaking out). that’s so fun! but to go to the author himself and ask him to change things to suit your tastes is Just Plain Weird, Dude. sometimes headcanons are meant to stay in your head.
Oh yeah specifically his views re: Hyde and his tastes in art/decor feel very 1) personal and subjective and 2) disconnected from the book’s text… like… Why’d Hyde buy a painting if I can’t envision him doing so? Well, Jekyll would, right? You remember what the plot twist of the novella is, right, Fred?
(ALSO the point about JekyllHyde stress-cleaning is so real. I read him as a man obsessed with control and I can perfectly imagine him trying to make the lab look as normal as possible to not have to think about Imminent Death.)
ya!!! that was my reaction to a lot of it— just. did myers understand the twist??? what was his understanding (or misunderstanding) of the nature of hyde and of what Stevenson was trying to say??? especially his comment about “style too elevated for hyde” in the reveal scene to lanyon. I always read that section as a deliberate part of the reveal— hyde using more jekyll-like language as he reveals his true identity, along with saying “OUR profession” rather than just “YOUR profession” to lanyon. it’s like a split second foreshadowing. maybe it was a mistake on stevenson’s part, but saying that hyde is acting out of character because he’s talking like jekyll is just baffling to me
also totally w the cleaning, I view that as in tandem with the tea gripe (“neither j nor h would prepare in that minute way for comfort”) because to me it read like a clear attempt at preserving a false sense of normalcy. like, what’s the Normalest thing that jekyllhyde could do to calm himself down? probably make a cup of tea. self soothing with a hot beverage is literally not even an uncommon activity
also baffling that myers would continue to press the point about how hyde ought to be acting while distraught and sickly, to stevenson, who just told him he has extensive experience being Distraught And Sickly
Wow. This is a lot more than I expected. Thank you for the additional information and thoughts.
🫵 YOU. STOP WHERE YOU ARE

Hey thank you! It’s no issue! I probably should read a few more essays on the subject matter.

It’s interesting to note that
Henry Jekyll taking like 5 minutes staring at his hand to realise that he changed in his sleep
vs
The 14th Doctor realising he changed to the same body over 1000 years later (billions if you count the wall of diamond) by noticing he had the same teeth about 10 seconds after regeneration
