HAPPY 100 YR ANNIVERSARY TO THE (GREAT) GOAT

i still think that Daisy is one of, if not the most well written character in the great gatsby. at the very least the way she's written is the most interesting to me. just the way her voice is described alone and the way that description is filled out in all the different ways she develops throughout the story is so intriguing. the difference between the beginning of the book where she uses her voice and draws people towards her, the middle where she stays quiet and causes people to fight around her, and the end where she manipulates quietly from the sidelines, it's all just so well done.

ah.... gatsby and nick are like way different in the musical and the book and the movie...

in the book, nick puts out like a closeted gay man. he fits himself with jordans company just so he can say that he dated a woman, all the while carefully describing every conventionally attractive man he meets with the detail of a poet who is madly in love with his muse. and he really treats gatsby like his muse in the book. its almost comedic how gay nick is in the book.

in the 2013 movie, nick is more like a very open bisexual. hes not so gay as to check out every man that he comes across, but the way toby maguire portrays him characterizes him as a person who will literally never say no to any one relationship. hes literally always up for some fun, constantly. hes like in love with gatsby too, but in a "this guy is so endearing i have the innate urge to be there for him no matter what." and then he becomes so infatuated with gatsby and his happiness that when gatsby eventually doesnt become happy, and dies, nick spirals into depression, goes insane, admits himself into a mental hospital.... that is not heterosexual behavior is all im saying.

yeah and then in the musical hes just a fucking prude. they ruined my bewildered pathetic nick. hes a prude. AND straight. im so devasted. i love the music. its so good. but like this is the straightest that nick will ever be like hes genuinely in love with jordan. theres no possible shot that he could end up with gatsby bc hes like. straight. they made nick straight. this man desperately likes women and it discomforts me. im so uncomfortable with this version of nick.

yeah that is in fact the straightest version of this story i have ever seen LMAO

but it was a very cool production!! i love Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada and Samantha Pauly so i had a good time :D but yes there was a really weird amount of effort into making it very heterosexual..

Nick’s purpose as the “author” of The Great Gatsby is disguised as an altruistic eulogy to Gatsby, but it’s really an apology dedicated to himself. HIs entire goal (which he wouldn’t admit even to himself) is to justify his own part in everything that happens that summer and convince both his audience and himself that he’s a good person who didn’t do anything wrong. More than that, to argue that he is better than the others involved. And that hidden central idea– that Nick is a good person– is a lie.
