You know I used to be with the whole not giving up parts of you to help others…then I grew up. I realized that to help someone to really help someone you have to give up something - time, money, body parts, emotions, etc. But the rule should be do not give excessively of yourself, do not leave yourself in destitute of what you are giving away.

With the whole, that’s why you don’t go around fixing others…the bear still needed someone to give him a helping hand to get mended. This also ignores the fact that the bear could’ve lived well without the pieces he had given away but upon rejection he furthered damaged himself. The first part of the story reaction is kind of problematic because it also gives the impression that helping others should lead to some form of reciprocation. Helping others then becomes helping not for the sake of feeling for them and wanting to give but because you feel like you deserve something in return.
