My groups textual analysis
Chloe-1. Where is the play set? How does this affect how I play my character? The play is set on an English farm, named ‘Manor Farm’. This affects my character Mollie, as she feels connected to the humans as opposed to all of the other animals is the farm. She wants the fame to stay Manor Farm as opposed to changing to Animal Farm.4) How much time passes during the play?It is uncertain exactly how much time passes, however we know that there is definitely a few days and nights pass by, all of the events within this play happen over time and do not happen all in one day.How will that passage of time be played/represented?This can be represented using lighting, when it is night time, there could be dark, dull, dim lighting, and there could also be a few animals lying around sleeping, to represent that it is night time, and then when morning comes, there can be brighter lights and perhaps some morning sound effects such as birds singing. POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT7) Any reference to political events? There is reference to rebellion at the very start of the play, when the narrator is telling the audience that Mr Jones did not feed the animals and so the rebellion began. I believe that this links to World War 2, and how the countries fought against one and other and rebelled against each other. What was the political environment of the writer at the time?During the 1940’s was when World War 2 was happening, which of course would have influenced George Orwell and everyone who lived during this time. He makes lots of links to the war in Animal farm. The rebellion is one example. The pig’s manipulation is another, Napoleon the pig has been linked to Starling. How will the political context be played / represented? Visually or through dialogue/sound?The political context will be represented visually mainly. In our performance we have a podium where the pigs all stand higher than the other animals. This should clearly show the audience the levels of power each animal has, despite the fact that the line ‘’all animals are equal’’ is often mentioned within our performance.9) Are there any references to events prior to the play?Do any of the characters carry scars or memories from these events? There is no reference within the play to suggest that there are events prior to the play. 11. Which character is the antagonist? I believe that Mr Jones is the antagonist, due to the fact that his actions rile up the animals and lead to the revulsion of them all. Mr Jones has a negative attitude towards the animals due to the fact that he neglects them by not feeding them and alternatively turning to alcohol and socialising. Throughout the play however t alters and as Mr Jones is pushed away by the animals, one of the pig leaders, Squealer becomes another antagonist via his ways of leading the animals are seen as somewhat a form of dictatorship and causes issues. Squealer affects my character as his ways of leading turns Mollie even further away from the animals and leads her to the humans.11. Who’s the protagonist ? I believe that at during the start of the play, all of the animals are the protagonists, due to the fact that they’re not as empowered and high up as the humans. Alternatively once Mr. Jones has fled from the farm and after Major has passed, the remaining pigs, Napoleon, Snowball and Squealer, alter their behaviour to become new leaders and towards the end of the performance, the protagonists are simply just the pigs on the farm, as they appear to be wise leaders with authority and ability over the other animals on the farm. For example, when Squealer states ‘Us pigs, who are the brains of the farm’. 14. Do any of the characters have accents / dialects? After watching the play a few times I noticed that my character Mollie had well spoken English accent therefore I wanted to carry this through and portray this in my performance. Additionally I didn’t project too loudly as I believed that my character due to the fact that she does not entirely agree with the others, she is somewhat reserved in which to avoid disagreement and/or confrontation. 22) What is the significance of the title? At the start of the play, the farm is called Manor farm, but when the animals take over the farm and get rid of Mr Jones, they change the name to Animal farm. This represents that they have taken over all of the power. Is the title metaphoric or literal? The tile is Literal, because the Animals actually do change the farm name to Animals Farm within the play.28) How can the shape of the play be best described and represented? As a story? Narrative? As episodes? As a journey? As a diagram or map? This play is represented as a narrative. The majority of the play is narrated by The Boy, and the animals seem to act around him.31. What acting style will you use in the performance and why?For our performance, the acting style we will be using is Brecht. This form of theatre is abstract , non naturalistic and informative. The storyline of Animal Farm is a metaphor in which to portray societal issues and hierarchy of the classes, therefore Brechtian theatre is an accurate style in which to use to portray political and/or social messages. This way it is informative and empowering, yet still appearing as a form of entertaining and abstract theatre.

Connor- 40. What do you want to communicate to your audience? What do you want your audience to take away with them at the end? Eg questions about an issue. An emotion or empathy towards a situation or character. An awareness of history or understanding of it.The play “Animal Farm” makes most audiences question authority. For our performance we wanted to portray to the audience the “class system” and how it is used in a positive and a negative way for example; if we did not have leaders in our community then nothing in the establishment. We also want the audience to take away from this experience of how politics and authority.36. Does the imagery relate to the setting? Mood? Ideas? Atmosphere? Character traits? We had a very minimalist set which included an arm chair, tiered blocks each higher than the other and black boards placed on the floor to be used as a barn door. This was a very Brecht concept as it doesn’t distract from the performance. We also had all black costumes with signs of our character names, to show how important the performance is and not to rely on costumes.13. How are speeches structured? If a character is more formal and educated, then their speech would be longer and have more substance to it- compared to a character with a lower status and less educated as they would speak quite simplified with a tendency to repeat themselves and question the other person they are talking to. Their ability to keep a conversation would be lacking in comparison to a character with a higher status.3. Any references to time of day: Unspecified time periodHow does this affects how I play my character? As it has no historical references the audience are not able to gather what time period it is set in, so the actor would have to portray where it is set using- an accent, wear clothes dated in that time period.
Peer Review 2 - Chloe Blake
Reviewer/observer: Amy Norton
*MY PEER REVIEW WAS ON CHLOES PERFORMANCE IN TAKE ME OR LEAVE ME*
Physical skills What do you find most interesting about their physical performance and uses of gestures?
I personally enjoyed Chloe’s use of facial expressions through the scene. For example when Jasmine first sings “take me baby, or leave me?”. Chloe used facial expressions to portray strong emotions, and showed that she was shocked by what Jasmine had said. I also liked how she worked with levels by bending down in front of Jasmine or putting her leg up on the table to show power.
How could they experiment more with their movement?
I think that she could experiment by loosening up more in scenes. This may be due to the character Joanne and how she is uptight however there could be more fluidity in her movements to emphasise the theatrical side of her. For example, when climbing up on the table and singing to Jasmine she could be more free and lean back or move her hips more.
Have they remembered their blocking and movement?
From watching Chloe closely she didn’t make any obvious faults or errors. All of the blocking and choreography went smoothly and she remembered her words and the timing well.
Do they/you use appropriate facial expressions? If so when where and how effective are they?
I noticed that Chloe reacted well to Jasmine and she made it clear the relationship they had together via expression. For example, at the start of the song when Jasmine is seducing her, Chloe followed along well and her face showed adoration. However as the song progressed and it became more of an argument, Chloe’s expressions helped tell the story and she got angrier and more irritated as the song progressed.
Characterisation Are they using appropriate acting techniques ? Is this an appropriate portrayal of the Character?
I think that Chloe’s portrayal was clear and she used acting techniques to do so, such as gestures, body language and eye contact. An example of this would be, when her character Joanne is shouting at Maureen at the start, she rolled her eyes at all of Maureen’s responses and arguments. This showed character because she repeated it as if we’re a personality trait. Do they use a range of emotions and actions used to meet their characters objective?
Chloe clearly showed a range of emotions from start to finish. For example at the start of the scene, Chloe was frustrated with Jasmines character Maureen, then she then used her facial expressions to appear more unimpressed and arrogant than irritated. However it then altered again towards the end as she got angrier as the song progressed. For example when Jasmine sings the lyric “ Who’s in your bed, who? Chloe made it clear that she was angry with her strong body language and gestures as she sung/fought back.
Do they react to other characters on stage?
Chloe reacted well to Jasmine onstage. Her timing was quick and she paused at appropriate moment moments for effect. For example at he end of the song when the two say “ Guess I’m leaving” there is a very short pause of just 1 beat, however in this short beat Chloe changed her expression to appear angrier towards Jasmine and the two made clear eye contact to each other across the stage, in which emphasising the ending.

Action plan
Targets for Chloe, to improve her performance. 1. To work on relaxing more into the character, particularly when on the table.
2. To add more comical elements to the performance maybe with gestures or expressions.
3. Broaden her use of space during the performance, instead of focusing all blocking and choreography in one area of the stage.
Group performance
What elements of the scene/ performance worked well?
I thought that Chloe and Jasmine worked together well. They had a great sense of chemistry and passion throughout. Both had clear diction and strong vocals. Additionally they both told a story with their expressions and gestures of which took the audience along in the argument with the couple. Furthermore I enjoyed the use of levels in the performance. For example when Jasmine is knelt at Chloe’s feet symbolising begging, midway through the fight.
Rent Rehearsal Schedule
Notes of elements to work on: - ensure that costumes are ready and neatly set out for the first performance after last nights rehearsals.
-make sure personal props are set in specific places so that they are accessible during costume changes. For example when changing into Mrs.Cohen I kept my glasses and cardigan on a shelf at the back of the stage so that I could quick change during the performance, without needing to go to my dressing room.
-keep all personal items are tidied away into a safe place during performance time.
- lock the fire door after the evening show finishes otherwise this could result in break ins overnight and personal items stolen.
- sign in and out of rehearsal and performance sessions each day. - give my mic back at the end of every performance so that it is not lost. - do not hang around in the wings unless necessary as this clogs up space.
Schedule: Tuesday: Firstly, arrive at the theatre by 12:30 and sign in, making sure that everything is set out correctly in the dressing room in preparation for the first show. Do not wander out and leave the theatre unless told otherwise, incase we rehearse scenes.

Rent Rehearsal schedule
Notes of elements to work on this week:
- To make sure we aren’t spending too long in hair and makeup as this many take your focus off the performance elements.
- ensure we know where all of or costume is and that is it set up in a specific place that is accessible for costume changes etc.
- keeping calm backstage and not using up energy that we could be applying to our performance.
- allowing our words to be pronounced properly with clear diction due to the fact that the crucial elements of the plot line are told through song and can be misheard easily. For example pronouncing the letter ’T’ in Rent.
- remaining constantly in character onstage even when it isn’t our specific section.
Rehearsal schedule leading up to theatre rehearsals
Saturday: wash, iron and prepare costume so that they are ready to be taken to the theatre for Monday’s get in. Rehearse #voicemail 6, to ensure that I am in key and that I annunciate my lyrics. Also practice timing and rhythm so that I come in that the right time. Rehearse all chorus numbers in preparation for band call.
Sunday: BAND CALL, be at Chesterfield Studios for 10am. Warm up vocally after breakfast or on the way to the studios, preparing for the session ahead. Carry out band call.
Monday: Arrive at the theatre by 10:30 and sign in. We must sign in and out of rehearsals for health and safety reasons, incase there is a fire and we know who is in he building. I then need to carry out any jobs in order to help out where I am needed for the get in, for example assisting with props and putting them into categories for different scenes/acts. Once this is completed, place all costumes, makeup and accessories neatly in dressing room ready for the dress run.
Historical context evaluation
1 Evaluate your skills throughout the process starting with your professional conduct in the group I believe that throughout the rehearsal process I remained professional, this was shown through the following; - attending every session - being punctual and ate ending the lessons on time - wearing the correct footwear and appropriate clothing for rehearsing - bringing my script and notes to each session - working as both a team member and leader - listening to classmates and considering other ideas - inputting my own ideas and experimenting with new things - filming and talking notes in some sessions - being aware of risks in the rehearsal space I.e, broken lighting, large props or incorrect footwear and clothing. - making rehearsal schedules or plans Overall I believe that these wail ties allowed me to carry out my work to a high level. 2 Evaluate each skill Vocal, physical, singing, Dancing, Characterisation. Vocal – when singing as apart of the chorus I found that it was hard to pinpoint my own vocals to evaluate them. However in my solo sections towards the end I found that i portrayed my emotions well through raising my voice and singing louder as my character was to appear more emotional and/or upset. Additionally my vocals had power and didn’t break when hitting higher notes in the section. Physical – I believe that my physicality’s portrayed my character and emotions well. For example when entering the restaurant at the start of the scene I walked in sharply and fast to show that I had arrogance towards the waiter. This immediately gave an insight to the audience about my character. However I could have played with this more when dancing on the tables further in the song, as I could have been bolder with my movement to show that I was a strong character. Dancing – when evaluating my dancing I found that why I was in time with the music and my classmates, and that I had done the routine right. However this was only a short section of the song and I feel that I could have added more choreography with my character as she is a dancer/stripper therefore to dance more would portray my character and her profession to the audience. Characterisation – I played Mimi and I showed my character through body language, gestures and facial expressions. An example would be that when the character Benny walked round the table, I slouched forward onto the table to show that my character was uninterested and ignorant, showing her rude and rebellious side. I also showed this by rolling my eyes and making inappropriate hand gestures to Benny. I chose to do these techniques to show the audience the connection between Mimi and Benny and give a detailed insight into my character and her beliefs. 3 What could be improved? And why it needed improving using specific examples from the piece I think to overall improve the piece we could have worked together to focus on timing and rhythm. When watching back the recording there were sections where our singing fell or of time with the music, which sounded unprofessional and ineffective. Additionally when dancing around the tables I noticed that people lacked timing with the music, therefore the movements could sometimes appear awkward and unrehearsed. 4 If you had more time what would you do to improve these skills/ moment on stage? We could have improved both of these issues simply working harder and focusing more in rehearsals on timing and running specific sections repeatedly until we achieved better results. We also could have targeted specific members of the group that we’re going wrong repeatedly and suggested that they work on their mistakes at home also. 5. Try to find 3 examples of strengths and weaknesses. Strengths: 1. I kept in character throughout the song. I used strong fails expressions and body language to portray the character and make it believable for the audience members. 2. My vocals were strong and I was in tune. Additionally I sang the correct lyrics and had the right timing. 3. My dancing was in time with both the music and my fellow classmates. Meaning that it looked clean, tidy and effective to watch for the audience. Weaknesses: 1. My vocals almost broke in the higher sections of my solo therefore I need to work on my scales and ensure my voice is fully warmed up encore singing. 2. My energy tended to drop in some sections of performance, of which is not professional and doesn’t look good for an audience, therefore I need to ensure I am eating and drinking well and that I am getting enough sleep before performances. 3. Throughout the rehearsal process I found that I took leadership often, so I need to work on allowing others to more frequently have their say and input ideas into devising the performance. A) find funding bodies or companies that would invest in your work. Gay pride would be an example of a funding body that would invest in our work/performance as they relate to the themes and issues of homosexuality and the LGBT community. Audience members could be positively affected by watching our performances and being able to relate. B) explain who your target audience might be. Our target audience would likely range from the ages of 15 to 50. Any younger would be inappropriate as there are some explicit lyrics and contexts in the scene. However any older than 50 and audience members may not relate to the content. Our audience could also be member of the LGBT community or perhaps people that are suffering with AIDS, HIV or have known or lost loved ones due to this disease. C) Explain venues where you could present the piece . We could present our performance in secondary schools to students, in which to educate them on themes and issues such as sexuality, and AIDS. This could be helpful for students who are questioning their sexuality. Another venue could be Gay Pride events or for AIDS/HIV charity organisations. This would work as the themes and issues in the song could be relatable to these possible audience members. Here are some links to these events and their sites; http://www.gaypridecalendar.com https://www.worldaidsday.org http://www.bfi.org.uk D) Explain how your work links to the national curriculum in schools. Our performance could be beneficial to perform for students in schools as we would educate them on serious societal issues such as; - homosexuality - gay pride - LGBT - AIDS and HIV - America during the 1980’s and 1990’s Also it could be beneficial for students that are experiencing issues in being comfortable with themselves and their own sexualities.
Self review
*MY REVIEW WAS ON MY PERFORMANCE IN VOICEMAIL 1.
Physical skills What do you find most interesting about their physical performance and uses of gestures?
I found that during my performance I used gestures so show my character, for example depending on what my lines were explaining, I tried to show this through my body languages. For example when I was confused or uncomfortable I retracted in myself and folded my arms.
How could they experiment more with their movement?
I feel that I could experiment further with movement by moving my lower body. Although in this section I am stood in a single place, I think that moving slightly would add more naturalism to my character.
Have they remembered their blocking and movement?
I have very little blocking for my section as it is in one single space throughout. However I remembered to stay in that position and to get to that place at the appropriate time.
Do you use appropriate facial expressions?
Yes, I noticed that as the lines change my facial expression altered to tell the story. For example on the line “ we’re sorry to hear that Maureen dumped you” I changed my expression in which to look awkward and apologetic. I feel that this was effective as it emphasises the storytelling to the audience.
What could have been improved?
Overall I think that I could have improved my utilising my body more and allowing my body language to tell the story as much as my vocal and facial expressions. Therefore next time I will experiment with my movements and ask for feedback from my teachers and peers to see if it has made an improvement.
Characterisation
Did you appropriately portray the character through acting techniques?
Yes, I believe that I used techniques such as timing and fluidity to make my character believable and naturalistic yet at the same time appropriate for musical theatre genre/style of acting. I used timing to portray natural pauses in conversation. Alternatively I still used fluidity when speaking so that I appeared comfortable and natural as a person would when speaking to their real family.
Is your characters objective clear in each scene? If so what is it? (I want to…)
Yes my characters objective in the scene is to contact Mark ( her son) and catch up with what's happening in his and her lives. However he isn't responding to her calls therefore she leaves a voicemail. She is an interfering mother who worries easily and likes to be involved in Marks private life, this is shown in the lines; "Oh, I hope you like the hotplate, just don't leave it on dear, when you leave the house, oh and mark we're sorry to hear that Maureen dumped you" It's clear that she wants to know what's going on in his life but Mark pushes her away, however realising in her being more and more clingy.
Is the acting technique appropriate to the style of the performance
I wanted to use my characterisation and make it clear who my character was and what she wanted to get from this scene, with the use of more than just saying my lines. I did this through a use of gestures, such as folding my arms and standing upright to show a sense of control and power over Mark. Yet I still wanted to appear motherly, therefore I additionally played with my facial expressions showing worry, care and confusion when questioning Mark.
Do they use a range of emotions and actions used to meet their characters objective?
My characters objective is to get in contact with and question Mark, therefore I used my gestures and expressions to display a range of emotions such as; worry, interference, confusion, awkwardness. I played with raising and lowering my eyebrows to exaggerate emotion and expression, and looking around the stage or the audience to appear worried. p>Do they/you react to other characters on stage? On stage I don't react with other, as my character is technically not present with everyone else in that scene, my character is situated at home leaving a voicemail. Therefore if I was to react with other members it would be confusing to the audience as to where I was located.

Action plan
Targets to improve my performance. In which to improve my performance I could have experimented further with my use of space. Although my section is situated in one space in the corner of the stage I could have experimented but moving out of or around that small area of the stage. It may however not have worked and wouldn’t have reflected the original work, but it’s worth playing around with movement as if t could have been effective and more engaging for the audience to watch, than standing in one position under a spotlight. p>
What elements of the scene/ performance worked well?
My voicemail is situated in the opening tune up of the first act, which is then followed by the chorus number Rent. The opening tune up was strong and it immediately educated the audience of the characters and our situations. It was well acted and described by Jacob who played Mark. I also thought the spacing in that scene was very effective. The entire cast were dotted around the stage and I thought that this showed power together as an ensemble. Portraying themes of Rent, such as friendship, family and love from the first initial stage of the show. I believe this is effective as it immediately engages the audience with every cast member, not just principles, and allowing the audience to feel apart of the Rent family.
Marketing For Performing Arts- Evaluation
1-What was your item of publicity? My Item of Publicity was to produce a Radio interview and the questions asked. Here is the link to my recorded item; https://youtu.be/j77Z9neq11U 2 - Give your ticket sale information and discuss which performances were more popular than others and possible reasons why. The dates of our shows are as of the following; Tuesday 21st June- 7:30PM - Evening Wednesday 22nd June- 2:00PM - Matinée Wednesday 22nd June- 7:30PM - Evening The bestselling show is the Wednesday evening with over half of the seats sold and the worst being the Matinée show with currently less than 40 tickets sold. The matinee is the least popular because the show is among for young adults upwards, therefore most people are at work, college or school in the afternoon therefore less audience members are available. The Wednesday night is the most popular because some audience members often assume that this will be the best performance in regards to the quality of acting and the performance, perhaps thinking it will be the most rehearsed or that we will have more energy with it being the last performance. 3- Compare the data from both productions and give reasoning for the outcome. Could it be the differences in marketing strategy or is it the production target audience? Total ticket sales for all 3 shows. Rent: 279 tickets One Man Two Guvnors : 230 Rent have overall sold more tickets than One Man Two Guvnors, this might be because musicals are more enticing than plays or more popular to the public general. However due to there being different sized venues, the play cast have a large audience for their smaller theatre, and we have a smaller audience due to having a larger theatre. A reason behind ticket sales being high or low could be because of the use of marketing strategy. Rent and One Man Two Guvnors used pretty much the same marketing strategies in order to sell tickets, such a s using social media pages, flyers, posters word of mouth etc, however it is possible that these marketing strategies worked in favour of or been had more suitable for Rent. For example, the play cast carried out a flash mob in the town centre, however they had limited members and with it being short acted scenes I don’t attract as much attention. However if this had been carried out by the musical cast, the music playing loud, bright costumes and dancing could work more in our favour when attracting the public’s attention. 4- What elements of your strategy worked well. Explain fully and give reasoning as to why. In our group marketing strategy we had several different ways in which that we publicised our production. For example; Flyers Posters Word of Mouth Social Media Radio Newspapers/Magazine Bag packing Together we found that our most effective strategies were the use of social media, bag packing and word of mouth. For example, we found that posting video’s and/or photos on social media brought our ticket sale up. We were able to get creative with videos, for example, cast interviews where principle members were asked questions about the show and other related topics. We did this to create a connection between our audience members as the cart, so that people could feel closer to the show and feel excited for the performances. These interviews were posted on sites such as Facebook and Instagram. We chose these popular social media pages to encourage views, popularity and exposure. Additionally, we worked further with social media and had a Rent snapchat page, where we posted short film clips of rehearsals, sneak peaks and quick questions with cast members. Each day a principles cast member had their snapchat takeover day to film the process and encourage a relationship between the audience and cast. The pages were successful as we got a large following, with around 100 followers collectively on the sites. Bag packing at Morrison’s – We definitely encouraged sales through bag packing, as it allowed us the opportunity to talk to the general public fully, without them rejecting information and walking away. I found that with people being appreciative of you helping with their bags, it warmed them round to listening about what you had to say, therefore giving us an opening to discuss rent and encourage ticket sales. However even if they were less inclined to chat it still meant that I could place a leaflet in their shopping bags therefore planting the seed and still advertising the show in some form. 5- What went less well? Give full reasoning and description - Handing out leaflets in town the town centre. This strategy was not as successful as other methods as we found that approaching we people was hard to do and often an uncomfortable situation for both cast members and the public. Additionally it gave the public a choice whether they wanted leaflets or not, and some people would simply refuse a flyer or some would politely would take one from us and not even take note of what it actually was, even after we explained. However some people were interested and talkative however the strangely was too hit and miss, for it to be an effective form of marketing. 6-Give ways in which you would improve or change your strategy I feel we have sold few tickets through handing out leaflets in town, as people were either busy or uninterested. However we could have improved this strategy by choosing our words wisely when engaging with the public. For example when approaching them, not just handing them a leaflet, but instead making clear conversation about Rent, asking them about their interests in theatre, any musicals they enjoyed, if they had heard of Rent etc and made the conversation more engaging and personal. I feel that this would have boosted our sales up as it would allow the public to connect on a more person level. It's likely that people didn’t even take into consideration what our leaflet explained or what the show entailed and simply threw it away as if it was junk mail, however explaining rent further could have meant avoiding this issue. Finally we could have gotten together and discussed our marketing strategies every further during the process, and talked about what worked and what didn’t, eliminating the less effective forms of advertisement, and together found other ways to encourage tickets sales and general public interest.

Peer Review - Isabelle Allen
Reviewer/observer: Amy Norton *MY PEER REVIEW WAS ON ISABELLE’S PERFORMANCE IN LA VIE BOHEME. Physical skills What do you find most interesting about their physical performance and uses of gestures? I personally like Isabelle's use of facial expressions in the beginning of the scene as we enter the restaurant. I like how she used her body language and facial expressions to make herself seem intimidating when barging past the waiter as we enter. She remained fully in character and her gestures were exaggerated enough for the genre of musical theatre however still believable. How could they experiment more with their movement? I think that she could experiment by loosening up more in scenes. This may be due to the character she has created however, but I do think there needs to be more fluidity to her movements. For example, when climbing up on the table towards the end of the song, she can sometimes appear stiff therefore needs to let herself relax. Also it would be beneficial if Isabelle focused on her timing in some choreographic areas of the scene, such as when partner working with me on the table. Her timing is slightly off and she seems hesitant and unconfident for the first few beats. Have they remembered their blocking and movement? From watching the video back I didn't notice any areas where Isabelle had made an obvious error if so it wasn't noticeable to myself. Therefore she seemed prepared and well rehearsed. Do they/you use appropriate facial expressions? If so when where and how effective are they? I noticed that Isabelle often used clear facial expressions of which that changed to fit different emotions and moods in the song. For example when sat at the table towards the beginning, she reacted and responded well to other cast members and this was shown clearly through her face. For example when Maureen stood on the table and made gestures to Benny, you could see that Isabelle was reacting facially and with gestures by laughing and encouraging Maureen's behaviour. I think that this is effective as it encourages others to have energy and keeps the performance up. Characterisation Are they using appropriate acting techniques ? Is this an appropriate portrayal of the Character? I thought that Isabelle's use of acting techniques were very clear and effective. You could see that she had thought about who her character was, the story behind and little areas such as mannerisms and body language. For example when Benny and Mimi have a conversation in La Vie Boheme, beforehand Isabelle climbs on the table whilst others are dancing, this shows that her character may be reckless and daring, or attention seeking therefore Isabelle had thought of this beforehand and applied it to her characterisation. She also had an attitude though it that was quite fierce and cheeky which you could tell it had been put thought in to and was portrayed well. Can you identify their given Circumstance? Yes, it's clear that Isabelle's character is a rebellious young adult that wants to make a change and stand out from the crowd, and she made that clear through her expressions and gestures. For example reacting to Benny and frowning or making rude gestures to his speech. Additionally this is shown when she dances on the table recklessly, showing that she is a free spirit. You can see that Isabelle had thought about this and believes in her own story. Is their characters objective clear in each scene? If so what is it? Yes, as stated before it is clear that Isabelle is a rebellious character wanting to stand out or make a change and that is what the song La Vie Boheme is about too, therefore her acting and behaviour is well suited to the scene. Is the acting technique appropriate to the style of the performance? I think that because RENT is an operatic musical, it's hard to follow the story therefore it's necessary that characterisation, gestures and diction etc are all made clear as these are needed to tell the sorry as opposed to lines. Isabelle was strong when acting, and her lyrics were delivered clearly. Do they use a range of emotions and actions used to meet their characters objective? I definitely noticed that Isabelle's mood and emotions varied throughout. For example at the start of the song she appeared frustrated, rushed and irritated whereas toward the end she was carefree and happy, meaning that her emotions and actions ranged with the themes of the song, helping to tell the story. Do they react to other characters on stage? I personally thought that she reacted well with others onstage. In particular I experience personal interaction with Isabelle in parts of the song. An example of this would be when we club on the table and dance together as part of the ensemble section. She remains fully in character and her expressions are big and powerful. LIST OF FURTHER SKILLS TO CONSIDER Loudness- 9, she projects well and clearly. Emotion tone- 8, her emotion is always clear whether it be physically or vocally. Pace- 8, there is a constant kept pace about her character Rhythm-6, her rhythm often dips and is lost but she picks it up again Pausing-8, Isabelle pauses at appropriate moments for effect. Accent/dialect/diction/8, it's hard to hear her accent individually, but her vocals do not stand it as being wrong. Pitch-6, I noticed that Isabelle's pitch and tuning can sometimes drop therefore she needs to work on keeping note consistency. Fluidity-6, she also needs to loosen up when dancing and become more comfortable. Comedy - 7, Isabelle is comical in her well timed reactions to Benny at the table. Openness/ confidence - 9, it is clear that she is confident with her character and plays it well. Use of space -9, she also uses the space around her for the best effect. Eye contact-9, Isabelle always makes eye contact with other characters, including myself. Energy-8, her energy famine high and strong thought, however dips when dancing. Spatial awareness-8, she has good awareness and is in the right place at all times. Audience interaction-7, when singing lines such as " let he among us without sin be the first to condemn", Isabelle focuses on her audience and makes eye contact, engaging the crowd to the lyrics of the song. Timing-6 her timing is sometimes off in dancing parts. Memory-9, Isabelle is always prepared and ready, and makes little mistakes in rehearsals. Action plan Targets for Isabelle, to improve her performance. 1. To work on rhythm and timing when dancing in the large ensemble sections, particularly when on the table. 2. To control energy so that it is too overpowering and non naturalistic. 3. Relax and enjoy the number, not focus too hard on the character and it appear forced, let it come naturally. Group performance What elements of the scene/ performance worked well? I believe that as a group our gestures and characterisation was believable. We had expressive faces and strong body language. We also interacted with one another for it to seem believable to an audience that we are truly good friends, although this is true anyway it's necessary that we ensure the audience believe it. Finally we do however need to work on our timing in the table choreography section, making sure we all start with the same arm and on the same beat. The energy also needs to stop dropping as the song progresses. @isabelleallen250698
