Devotional Title: Living Worthy of the Gospel
āAnd whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.ā
āBut when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind.ā
āWe therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.ā
āOnly let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.ā
The Christian life is not measured merely by what we believe, but by how we live, how we receive others, and how we respond to rejection. In these verses, Jesus and the apostles outline a way of life that reflects the very heart of the gospel.
In Luke 9, Jesus prepares His disciples for the reality that not all will receive the message. When truth is rejected, the disciple is not called to bitterness or retreat, but to obedience and trust. Shaking the dust from oneās feet is not an act of angerāit is an act of surrender, leaving judgment in Godās hands and continuing the mission forward.
Yet the gospel is not only about moving on from rejection; it is also about moving toward those the world often overlooks. In Luke 14, Jesus turns social norms upside down. He calls us to open our lives to those who cannot repay usāthe poor, the broken, the marginalized. This kind of hospitality reflects Godās grace, which reached us when we had nothing to offer in return.
The apostle John expands this vision by reminding believers that when we receive those who labor for the truth, we become partners in the work of the gospel. Supporting, welcoming, and encouraging faithful servants is not secondary workāit is gospel work. The mission of Christ advances not only through preaching, but through unity, generosity, and shared purpose.
Paul ties it all together in Philippians 1:27. A life worthy of the gospel is one marked by steadfastness, unity, and active participation in the faith. Standing firm, striving together, and living with integrity are not optional for the believerāthey are the natural fruit of a heart transformed by Christ.
Am I faithfully sharing the truth without becoming discouraged by rejection?
Do my actions reflect Christās heart for those who cannot repay me?
Am I supporting and standing with others who labor for the gospel?
Does my daily conduct reflect the worth and beauty of the gospel I profess?
The gospel calls us to move forward in faith, open our lives in love, and stand together in unity.
Lord, shape my life so that it reflects the gospel of Christ. Help me to remain faithful when truth is rejected, generous when others cannot repay, and united with those who labor for Your name. Let my conduct bring honor to You in every place I go. Strengthen me to stand fast and strive together for the faith of the gospel. In Jesusā name, Amen.
