sunsoaked | alex & ludus
@gridballgod
Being a newcomer to the islands, Ludus still didn’t have too much in the way of friends. Workaholic as he was, he hadn’t set that as his primary focus. He was never the one to force things anyway, preferring to let them flow naturally. Moving away from his tiny, close-knit island was already a giant leap out of his comfort zone.
At the beach however, he could easily blend in, seeing as locals naturally would approach him for tips on how to navigate the water. In fact, he’d made himself a surfing buddy this way, by the name of Alex Mullner.
Despite having heard of Alex’s notorious habit of getting around, Ludus could respect the fact he was a great athlete. He had been keen to find someone to break a sweat with, and the other man fit the bill perfectly. So of course, Alex was the first person he invited out as soon as he’d heard he was visiting from Leuda.
“Hey! Over here.” Ludus waved Alex over, finally spotting him after a patient wait. “Aloha awakea, brother. I think you’re here because you missed Arcadia’s beaches, yes?”
naomist:
take a break | ludus&naomi
A sweltering heat had taken over the whole region, the summer sun beating down on any reasonable Arcadian harder than ever - but of course, Naomi, the relentless ball of energy that she was, remained unaffected. As a matter of fact, she had been up and brewing a special occasion just for this very afternoon… one which the latest arrival to her farm, Ludus, had no idea was coming, and it was only a matter of time before her plans became unveiled.
As soon he had stepped foot onto her farm, Naomi had been meticulously finding ways to get to know the man with odd-coloured hair better, but he had always brushed her off with a formality which she wasn’t all too fond of. Sure, she knew that it was probably a good thing that her employee had a no-nonsense approach to his work, but his distance only made her want to get to know him even more! After all, it’d be a waste to let him live in his own bubble if they were going to be working together from here on.
No, here at the Moonlight Farm (name still pending), things worked differently. They were going to become the best of buddies, regardless of any differences that could get in between them.
Spotting him by the barn, Naomi wasted no time in grabbing the lumberjack’s attention with a wave of her hand. “Ludus, over here!” She called out, latching onto his arm as she began to pull him in the opposite direction. “Anything else can wait - there’s a very important meeting we need to have right now!”
Indifferent to any protests, she proceeded to lead him towards the field and to a patterned blanket splayed across an empty patch of grass. On top laid a delicate basket, its flap purposely left slightly open to lend small glimpses of the egg sandwiches, diced fruit, and crackers that were inside - and as if to complete the picture, a large pitcher of homemade lemonade sat right beside it.
“Surprise! It’s a picnic!” Holding her hands behind her back, Naomi basked in the view of her mouth-watering production before sparing Ludus a glance. “Thought you might like some refreshments after all that log-carrying, but I couldn’t decide on what you might like, sooo… I thought I’d bring on as much as I could.”
She hopped onto the blanket without another second thought, crossing her legs together as she patted the free space next to her. “Come, take a seat!”
The sun’s rays beating down at midday would have seemed harsh for most, but to the islander it was a welcome sensation. He remembered all too well the chilly, wet days on Arcadia and the cloudy grey skies. Though he wanted the summer to last longer, he’d have to enjoy what was left of it for now.
He had just left the barn, after repairing an unhinged window. The property was still in its early stages, as he’d learned from the (rather young) owner, so there was plenty of work to be done.
As he left the buildings, a sudden weight on his arm brought him slightly downwards, “Aī--” he said in futile protest. “--What is this all about?”
He couldn’t do much as he was soon being dragged to the field near the farmlands, by none other than Naomi herself, his employer and owner of Moonlight Farm. “Erm... mahalo,” he said after a couple of moments of silence and slow, confused blinks. He had seated himself automatically, out of respect for the brunette. Everything looked perfectly picturesque. Still, the awkwardness was palpable.. at least for him. “..So.. boss.. is there something you’re trying to bring up?”
forest fires | open
Working at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center had been a natural course of action for Ludus, who'd been raised on an island with a great number of exotic species. He'd been trained to spot the differences between various kinds of island birds, fish and butterflies alike. So when the opportunity came, he didn't hesitate to apply for a position, thinking there were few other perfect candidates for the job.
Despite his inherent knowledge of the specimens from Lulukoko, however, he found it unexpectedly challenging to profile the Arcadian wildlife. There were monsters he'd never seen before, behaviors he didn't recognize.
Apparently, in the aftermath of a recent forest fire, there had been multiple reported incidents of animal injury across the island. He'd been stationed near one of the forests to assist in the recovery efforts. At the moment, he was doing his best to remain calm despite the thought he was possibly working against the clock.
He spotted someone emerging from the forest who seemed to be aware of the situation, and tapped their shoulder with a concerned frown,
"E kala mai iaʻu. Have you seen anything on your way back here?" The look of concern was evident in contrast to his usually stoic expression.

A Handy Man | Rachel&Ludus
peonyxplease:
@jckofallltrades
It wasn’t very often that Rachel found herself on Arcadia, but it was on those rare occasions that Rachel had a specific mission to fulfill. This time, she was in need of a decorative piece for her room. She needed a container of sorts for her to put her stuff in, and she figured that the best place to go for a sturdy and reliable option was the carpentry on Arcadia. She entered into the shop and looked around, spotting someone behind the counter.
“Ah- Excuse me-” As she got closer, she noticed his uniquely colored hair and various tattoos. She was a woman who could appreciate that sort of thing. “I don’t know if you guys make them, or if this is kind of a strictly-carpentry type deal, but I need a container about this big-” Rachel held up her hands in front of her to approximate the size. “-And I was wondering if you guys had those here. Or, if you don’t have one, if I can request one…”
Ludus had been clearing up the sawdust on one of the work spaces in the carpentry. Today was slower than usual, so he took it to himself to make sure that everything was maintained. Besides... it was a pain to be continually see all that dust accumulating throughout the day.
When he had heard the door open, he didn’t immediately acknowledge them, his attention focused on getting every bit of sawdust off. When he glanced up, he saw a fresh-faced blonde had entered and was quick to react.
“Aloha--” The swiftness with which he got up caused sawdust to fly into the air and make him cough several times, an embarrassing move to say the least. “... Uh yeah, we’ll need you to request to make one. What’s it for?”

The surprise colouring his expression was enough to give her a little bit of an ego boost. If there was one thing she hated, it was men who saw her strength as some sort of threat to their masculinity, as if it offended them in some way. Fortunately, from his reaction, Ludus didn’t appear to be one of those men. Although she was sure he was much physically stronger than her, she took pride in her ability to carry her own weight in these situations.
“Hmm…” Lily said aloud as they ventured through the winding tunnels. Did she take this opportunity to scare him or reassure him? Maybe a little bit of both. “There are monsters in these mines. It’s quite likely we’ll run into one, but they’re rarely anything I can’t handle alone.” She paused for effect. “Of course there is also the Grimoire Dragon… I’ve run into it before, and it does not go down without a fight.”
She allowed her mind to wander for a second to that fateful night, where she and a different blue-haired companion had almost lost the battle with that beast. He, too, hadn’t been carrying a weapon. She hoped the parallels would end there, and history would not repeat itself.
“But, like I said, I should be able to handle most of the monsters we might come across.”
Immediately from this woman he sensed some streak of independence. Which he was admittedly unused to, being the "reliable older brother" figure for most of the people he encountered. He wasn't used to feeling... relatively useless. He was the handyman, the older brother, even just the guy who could "reach for top shelf" ... now, he couldn't even say that. Although he seemed mature, Ludus still had something of a pride to defend. Somehow, he was determined not to be a dead weight. So yes, even if she could match him in physical strength and navigated these caverns alone... she didn't have to look out for him, either.
"... Grimoire dragons." He didn't let one hint of hesitation slip out, even though he'd never actually encountered those. Maybe she was exaggerating? "Lead the way. Can't be as bad as the force of the ocean on Lulukoko..." His hint at his own competence was not unintentional, and he was still expecting her to end up needing some kind of rescue... maybe even hoping for it.
Fortune Seeker || Ludus & Alicia
crystalball-predictions:
Alicia had only walked away for a moment, but when she returned there was already a customer waiting to see her. She had yet to say that she was officially open, but for tall, tan, and handsome, she wouldn’t mind.
“Hello~”
She walked over to the table, leaning against it with her arms crossed under her chest and a smile.
“What kind of fortune are you looking for? No matter the kind, they are always right!”
The woman that greeted him definitely possessed an aura of mystique. She had waist-length rose hair and an outfit equally revealing yet elegant. In other words, she was easily attracting his attention. But he didn’t arrive here out of that kind of selfishness, did he? He wanted to find out about his own family.
“Always right? ... How long have you been seeing these visions?” Nonetheless, despite growing up surrounded with beliefs in otherworldly forces, he couldn’t just buy into anything... at least when it concerned something so important.

Ludus wasn’t blood, but he was still family. He had been around the twins since the accident with their parents and ever since then, she saw him as a loving, yet, annoying older brother. He was a shoulder to cry on, a teddy bear to hug on cold, lonely nights, and someone to do all her errands when she was feeling anything but productive. ♡ There was so much she had to be thankful for with him - he was one of the people who influenced the person she was today. Without him, she didn’t know where she would have been right now.
A bouquet of blue lisianthuses and sunflowers was left for him.
Kaikunāne,
I don’t think these flowers say everything, but it’s the closest they had. You may be annoying and overbearing, but there are many things I wouldn’t have been able to get through without you. So, I guess that makes you pretty cool, too.
Aloha wau iā ʻoe! ♡
Your favorite sister.
Iluka
For all that Iluka seemed to catch him off guard, he had been unable to foresee this kind of affection from her. Or at least, such a blatant display of it, without being accompanied by some form of passive aggressiveness of some sort afterward...
-- Wait... she’d called him annoying and overbearing.
Well alright, guess he’d have to take that. He couldn’t expect more, but at the same time, he didn’t exactly mind keeping things the way they were. In a way, they ended up balancing each other out anyway.
Power Struggle || Ludus & Karen
drink-up-motherfuckers:
When Ludus wandered over, Karen kept her gaze on him, making sure that he wasn’t going to be…an asshole or anything. Whatever. Not that he could get a leg up on her, but…
“A hand?” She stiffened at the offer, then tossed the chain harness she’d just disconnected from it on the floor with a loud thud. “Why? Think I can’t handle it?”
She stood to her full height, and, as she often did, cursed whatever deity didn’t let her reach full Amazonian tallness. The dude was still over half a foot taller than her and was more muscular than her chiseled leanness, and, when it came right down to it, the only way she’d be able to take him in some kind of scuffle was if he was reluctant to fight her, she thought.
Still. She could probably handle him, if she was wily enough.
“Am I still proving myself to you as a strong employee?”
Karen was nothing like most women he knew. She immediately seemed to be sizing him up, and didn't seem to take his position as boss all too deeply. Despite her shorter stature she managed to be level with him, directly meeting him with a stare. This was already looking to be a challenge. Perhaps it was a test put on him, some kind of balancing force for being lucky enough to win this position in the first place. Even having been subject to the temper and demands of his own adoptive sibling didn’t quite prepare him for that kind of backlash.
“E kala mai i a'u, just making sure. You’re the only employee here, and it’s a lot to handle for one person, yeah?” Just keep his calm as he did with Iluka.
Lost & Found || Ludus & Frey
@dearestfrey
It was the early morning hours, and Ludus had taken to trekking through the woods. His goal had been to create a mental map of the area to see where the next site to make logging arrangements was the best, but he found himself taking his time to take in the scenery as well. It was peaceful here, when no one was disturbing his thoughts. The pace of life on Arcadia was faster than he was used to, so he rarely got to value slower moments like these.
His train of thought was broken when he heard rustling nearby, strikingly similar to footsteps. He tried peering through the thick undergrowth and trees, but couldn't make out anything very well. Anyone who had a shred of common sense would think walking alone in the woods was a bad idea. Perhaps they were lost? “Aloha--?” He began, but they seemed not to hear.

Lily nodded, the ghost of a smirk on her lips as he confessed he’d never actually been to Leuda. Never having even met a Leudan, though, surprised her. Knowing this almost made her determined to make a good first impression, although she wasn’t sure why his opinion of her island mattered so much to her, especially since she wasn’t actually native. Still, she felt attached to the little island she’d called home for 18 years.
She noted the size of the diamond he’d specified; it was definitely achievable. They’d have to go a decent way into the mines, but she was sure they’d find one by sunset.
She raised her eyebrows, amusement colouring her expression. He hadn’t finished his sentence, but she knew what he was inferring. Whenever she met someone who looked physically stronger than her, they were always dubious of her strength before they saw it for themselves. And she always got a little bit of a kick out of proving them wrong.
“Oh, I’m sure I can handle it,” Lily said, emphasising in a way that suggested he couldn’t. She deliberately lifted her hammer from by her side to rest on her shoulder with ease. “Stay close,” she instructed as they entered the tunnels. “We’ll have to go quite deep to find a stone as precious as a diamond, so it might be dangerous. Did you bring anything you can fight with, if it comes down to it? I’ll be able to protect you either way, but it would be useful to have help.” She always brought her dagger along for this very purpose.
At her next phrase, Ludus blinked in surprise. He didn’t quite have time to process her words before she had hoisted the hammer over her shoulders. As easily as if it were practically weightless. It took him a few moments to clear the look of surprise on his face.
“Uh... right.” At a temporary loss for words, that was the best he could manage. He followed Lily’s lead with a touch of awkwardness. It felt unusual, to feel almost helpless, as he was often the one lending assistance. At her mention of danger, he raised a brow. Where on her person would she be carrying a weapon? An alarming thought crossed his mind--under the slit of the dress... realizing his gaze had diverted, he quickly brought it back to her face, thankful for the darkness of the tunnels.
"What’s the worst that could happen?" he said slowly. He hadn’t thought to bring a weapon, but his sense of pride was taking over and he didn’t want to admit it. At the very least, he was sure he could rely on the survival skills on Lulukoko if it came to that. “I’m sure there’s nothing to be afraid of, yeah?”

Not long after she arrived, Lily saw Ludus approaching before he saw her, his forehead creased slightly as he examined the map in his hands. The sight made her laugh slightly to herself. She couldn’t imagine needing a map to get around the island if you’d visited a couple of times before, so she guessed he didn’t come to Leuda all that often. She raised her hand in return, a smile spreading across her face.
She raised an eyebrow at his words. “You sound surprised,” she said, unsure whether to take offence at that. At his next statement, it made a bit more sense. “Ah, I see… Are you speaking from experience, or just stereotypes,” she mused. Leudans didn’t have a great reputation on Arcadia, as she’d discovered over the years. “Hopefully I can prove to you that we’re not all that bad,” she suggested as they entered the mines.
“You’re looking for a diamond, if I remember correctly?”
Ludus couldn't help but note something like amusement in her expression. He wondered what could have caused it - - did he dress too strange for a Leudan? - - but pushed the thought away. It wasn’t like him to think so much of the little details, especially with an important task at hand.
He hesitated before responding, "... No, I've never been here. Or met a Leudan, but... stories."
"Diamond, yeah. One about this size--" he made gesture with his hand, then paused in the middle of his explanation, "... You're sure you can handle this? You look..." An appropriate word was difficult to find, so he trailed off before he would say something he would regret. "-- hoʻopoina. Need my help, just say so, " he said, trying to appear casual about it.
21. — adventure / quest
A younger version of Ludus sat in the shade of a palm tree on one of the shores of Lulukoko. His deep red eyes were trained on the horizon silently. It was the slowest time of day, early in the afternoon, when all the residents of the island were off on midday break. The heat brought with it a haze that would be tempting conditions for a nap… but this time, he’d decided to simply watch the sea.
He was bored, out of his mind in fact, but there was nothing better to do. Although like any teenager, he’d taken to alternative modes to entertainment (like pulling some kind of pranks on the residents) even that would get at best a dose of scolding since most of them were much older. Perhaps a side effect of growing older, but his imagination was no longer enough to entertain him, either. There were only so many ways to play “tag” with the younger kids…
There was nothing here on Lulukoko he hadn’t already roamed a hundred times over. And the sea had caused him to wonder what lay out there beyond the tiny island… could it be adventure? His own inner voice of responsibility chastised him – he had responsibilities and ties here. Yet nonetheless, the thought lingered with him the rest of the day, the spark of something like the excitement that he’d been longing for.
Power Struggle || Ludus & Karen
@jckofallltrades
For a while, the carpentry had been…quiet. A calm place for her to work. Orders came in to her directly, as she was the only one working there, and she tended to them well. There was no social interaction required. She was her own boss. Just a quieter, more legal version of being a pirate, she decided.
And then there was some hotshot. A boss. Someone who swooped in and decided he owned the damn place. Had he owned it the whole time? Had he been controlling the orders from a distance? She’d only been there a couple of weeks before he showed up, and even still, she couldn’t quite believe that he thought he was in charge of her.
Though he…he did sign her paychecks, and he did have a quiet way about him, and he did work alongside her on projects, and…
It was confusing. Karen had spent the past five years being a boss of a crew. Seeing a man like Ludus who didn’t quite exude the strong presence that she’d cultivated for so long was bizarre.
Her thoughts about him came to a stop as she dragged the tree she’d felled into the carpentry, then began detaching her equipment from it. “This suit the project we’ve got?” Karen drawled, giving Ludus a direct, focused stare.
Having grown with two younger siblings that constantly needed one thing or another had taught Ludus a great deal about patience. Nonetheless, a particular case at work was starting to get to him. For as good as his intentions were, he couldn't seem to get Karen to warm up to him. She had a certain aloofness to her demeanor, yet all the same seemed to be silently daring him to challenge her. He suspected it was because she didn't like him being boss, but he'd never thought he'd be considered a threat. The carpentry had been a natural takeover for him -- after all, it was about time to take the steps to establish himself properly on Arcadia.
But right now, he couldn’t spend more time wondering about her motives. They would have to get on better terms soon if things were to run smoothly, considering she was the only employee at the moment. And it was worth a shot, now that they would have to work together.
“That looks about the right size,” he nodded, though it’d have to be moved near work station. He cleared his throat, finding the role of boss to be more difficult to assume with her. “... You lugged that all the way here, yeah? Why don’t I lend you a hand?”
