lyla:
âAortic Aneurysm.â Lyla murmurs quietly to herself as she comes in from the downpour, eyes unfocused as she efficiently pulls down her polka dot umbrella and stabs it into the carpet, giving it a few choice twirls with a twist of her wrist to rid it of precipitation as she pulls down the hood of her rain slicked coat.Â
âA balloon-like bulge in the aorta.â She mumbles lowly to herself as she goes through her routine, headphones still in her ears as she listens to her instrumental playlist and walks towards the mail box on autopilot. âThe primary cause of nine thousand⊠eight hundred and sixty three deaths in 2014 and a contributing cause in more than seventeen thousand two hundred and fifteen deaths in the United States in 2009.âÂ
âTreatment?â She asks herself as she stomps off her rain boots, eyes towards the ground as she focuses, â Medicines can lower blood pressure and reduce risk for an aortic aneurysm. Surgery can repair or replace the injured section of the aorta.â Her steps are slow as she goes through her thought process, almost zombie like as she concentrates.âBeta blockers and calcium channel blockers are the most commoââ Lylaâs sentence cuts off as her path is impeded by her forehead suddenly meeting something, warm, wet, and oddly cottony. She stumbles back immediately with a furrowed brow and a wrinkled brow, wiping the wetness off her forehead in confusion as she looks up to seeâ, âJamie? What are you doing?â
She can tell her voice is unnecessarily loud even through her headphones, immediately moving to yank them out of her ears as she squints at her brother in bewilderment. ââŠWhy are you just standing here? Did you lose your key?âÂ
jamie thought that he heard lylaâs voice in the background as he stared at the mailboxes in silence, but that hunch wasnât confirmed until she quite literally ran into him. the bump caused him to instinctively turn around and when the offending person wasnât at his eye level, he knew it must have been lyla. he opened his mouth to say something before noticing that she was taking her ear buds outs and probably wouldnât have heard him in the first place.Â
once he had her attention he began to answer her questions. âno, i was just...â he wasnât sure what exactly he was doing. â...thinking about my plans for tonight.â jamie unconvincingly lied, biting his lip after doing so. âbut i do have my keys.â he added, pulling them out and turning to retrieve his mail - like he planned to do in the first place.Â
he loved lyla, but he also knew that she knew him too well. it was hard to hide anything from her. âyou listening to the worldâs weirdest movie? something about death and aorta's bursting.â even though jamie may not have been paying attention when his sister walked in, he did pick up a few of her words. "that stuff is gross as fuck, i donât know how you find it so fascinating.â
jamie took note that he was soaked and freezing while lyla was prepared enough to bring an umbrella. that was the difference between the two siblings - he knew it was going to rain, yet couldnât be bothered to carry an umbrella. lyla always was the smarter one. he used his state to his advantage as he took a few steps forwards and placed his elbow on top of her head, as if she was a table.
maddox:
âitâs your lucky day!â dox spoke, barley batting an eyelash at the others silent, and likely empty, threat. slowly letting his body down from the position he was in, he stayed rested on the floor, chin tiling up to look at jamie. âare your including yourself in the innocent public, jamie? you should really rethink that sentence.â dox smirked slightly, positioning his body so he was only barley out of the way of the others path. âif you remember, youâve dated me, therefore you really shouldnât be actinâ all bitchy about it. when have i ever gave a shit about anything?â it was true, but only in context. he was annoying, sure, but dox gave a shit about a lot of things, and deep down, he cared that he and jamie would probably never return to their once solid relationship. but on the outside? he remained indifferent. âanyway, iâm trying to do yoga so⊠youâre gonna have to find another way to where youâre trying to get to.Â
âyes, i am including myself in the innocent public.â he replied, emphasizing his chosen words with even more certainty than before. he put his foot down before taking a step forward in the space dox oh-so-generously gave him and attempting to step on his fingers.Â
âeverybody makes mistakes...â he started before stopping himself for a moment as he realized why that phrase sounded so familiar. he was going to have to yell at juno later for forcing him to listen to hannah montana that morning. âiâm trying to bleach that part of my life out of my brain, so refrain from mentioning that ever again.â he added as an unconvincing transition.
jamie crossed his arms. âwe get it, youâre desperate for attention, can you let the rest of us move on with our lives?â the more dox spoke, the more irritated jamie was becoming. he was pretty sure maddox specifically chose that spot simply to make everyone look at his physique or to strike up conversation since he was going to die forever alone - or something like that.
hensley:
before leaving her apartment that morning, hensley had though maybe i should bring an umbrella and was cursing silently to herself as she got caught in the rainy weather after work. with red hair damp and clinging to her face, hensley sighed, making her way towards the mailboxes as she noticed a familiar male in her way. âyes, and youâre also dripping, which makes this entire situation even worse.â hensley commented, although she wasnât much to speak, as her hair sent water droplets cascading onto the floor. âdistracted, j?â she asked quickly after, her slim frame sliding past him to get to her mailbox. nimble fingers unlocked and retrieved her mail before turning her attention back to jamie.Â
his cheeks puffed up at the redhead, his features squinting at her bluntness. jamie didnât feel as bad when he realized that hensley was in a similar state to his own. âthatâs kind of what gravity does to water when itâs on you, princess.â he retorted, stubbornly not moving from his position as he watched her weave in between himself and the mailboxes. jamie reached up and tugged slightly on her damp hair, simply to see her reaction. âwhat would make you think that?â he bit his lip after the words left his mouth - casually pretending nothing was wrong was exactly how jamie did things.
juno:
when the powerful voice of lead singer bonnie tyler no longer THUMPED inside her ears eyebrows immediately drew together, a look of utter confusion taking over junoâs porcelain features, cerulean hues lighting up when falling upon the maleâs familiar frame. âhey ! who gave you permission to come unannounced, party killer ? iâm a busy person, you know ?â LIES. she was probably going to keep on dancing ( if one could even call it that.. ) and annoying her floor neighbors with her boisterous antics. frigid arms were now folded across her chest, the young female attempting to stop the grin that was painting itself onto her red stained lips. âi donât have ear damage because iâm not a granny like you, jamie⊠and now that youâre here letâs see you do something useful. i think i just heard some little mouse feet in the kitchen.. time to put your heroic skills to the test !â
âi gave myself permission.â jamie stated a matter-of-factly, a smug look upon his face. he didnât usually feel much confidence around other people, but juno was different. juno wasnât like most people. âoh, please, youâre never busy doing anything important. last time i texted you and you told me you were busy then i saw on your snapchat story you smuggled a bunch of reject breadsticks and just didnât want to share.â jamie rolled his eyes, childishly poking juno in the shoulder with his finger.
âiâve already told you, just pretend theyâre a bunch of little mickey mice and that theyâre your new roommates! problem solved.â a light groan escaped his lips as he proceeded to ignore her command and throw himself onto her couch. which was a feat in and of itself as clothes and more were strewn across it in a similar fashion to the rest of her apartment.Â
maddox:
if you needed three words to describe dox, they would all be synonyms of the word ANNOYING, but he never seemed to care that people rolled their eyes constantly when he spoke. therefore, using the apartments main entrance as a YOGA PAD was, annoying; but very dox-like, and no one should be surprised. he didnât feel like being in his apartment and he booked out his typical gym room for a zumba class ( that he almost attended ), so he decided to take over the main entrance instead; shirtless, sweaty, and in a strange yoga position. as he moved slightly, he head footsteps approach him, and a smile pulled over his lips, but his position remained. âif iâm in your way, youâre gonna have to enjoy the view for a another minute.â he spoke smoothly, his hair falling into his eyes slightly as he looked up at the person.Â
jamie was looking forward to spending the night in his apartment doing absolutely nothing. work was hectic as usual - the animal shelter finishing up an adoption fair - and jamie was fighting to keep his eyes awake. he both smelled and felt like an exhausted dog. his mind had wandered to a few classic shower thoughts ( without actually being in the shower ) as he opened the door to the front entrance. as his eyes adjusted to the figure blocking his path, he gave a deep sigh.Â
âwow i get front row seats to your one-man douche show.â jamie muttered, lifting a foot up as if he was going to kick the other man. âdo you just wake up every morning and make it a goal to annoy the living shit out of everyone? you do have your own apartment, go fuck around in there where the innocent public doesnât have to see you.â
juno:
snowy tresses bounced upon brittle shoulders, head aimlessly moving around and defying the musicâs rythm. there was nobody around who could judge her awkward dance moves; not if you didnât consider the pile of unwashed clothes in the corner as a living thing anyway â juno was pretty sure that by that point there was already a radioactive creature residing in there. with nothing but a pair of old granny panties and a tank top to shield her from the cold breeze in her small apartment, she made sure to put on one hell of a show for her dusty and torn stuffed animals. âi need a hero,â an off-key voice rang out, making the thin walls of the building SHAKE ! âiâm holding out for a hero âtil the end of the night⊠and heâs gotta be STRONG, and heâs gotta be FASTââ she continued, bruised knees banging against each other every time she took a step in another direction. track so loud that a BANG on the door went completely unnoticed. âI NEED A HERO !â and so did the sound of the same swinging wide open.Â
jamieâs head fell back as juno unsurprisingly didnât open the door. her music was vibrating through the walls and her screaming voice simply added to the excruciating ruckus. "did somebody order a hero?â jamie jokingly proclaimed, failing to keep the straight face he was trying so desperately to hold onto as he impatiently swung open the door. he was almost one hundred percent certain she didnât even notice him and his sad attempt at humor. âfuck, junie, i can hear you down the hall. iâm pretty sure my -Â â he couldnât even hear himself think as the music continued to blare, so he trudged over and turned the offending machine off. he looked over at her judgmentally. âhow do you not have hearing damage?â
the sound of squishing shoes could be heard as the doors of the lobby were gently pried open. a âwet floorâ sign occupied the entrance, indicating that jamie was not the first to get caught in the rainy connecticut weather. jamieâs fingernails were in between his teeth as he absentmindedly stared ahead of him, walking the familiar path to the mailboxes that was ingrained in his brain. he stood there for a few moments, lost in thought, before noticing a figure behind him âoh, uh, shit âam i in your way?â he fumbled, suddenly hyper-aware of how his shirt clung to his skin and just how much water was sliding off of him. he quickly pulled his hand out his mouth and shoved it into a pocket.
