it was hard for zara to imagine that her tiny studio apartment could be any more of a shithole than it already was, that is, until the heat isn’t working. the building manager insists that he’ll have someone out to work on it, but the girl knows that probably won’t be for another twenty four hours, if she’s lucky. to top it off, her phones dead. packing a bag, zara heads for the subway and is on her way to jaxon’s. he was the first thing to pop in her head when it came to thoughts of how to stay warm. the trip seemed to take ages, likely because it was cold and dark. eventually she made it though and knocks on the door as she’s hiking the strap of her bag up on her shoulder. when the door opens she sighs, “i would have called but my phones dead,” she holds up the phone as if to show proof. “the heats busted at my place.” if theres anything zara can’t stand its asking for help shes hoping that her eyes are doing that for her without having to actually say it.

jaxon isn’t expecting a guest, and he definitely isn’t prepared to host company when he opens the door to his penthouse apartment in north kingsboro and finds zara standing on the other side. her presence is not unwelcome, it just catches him off guard, but he steps aside to welcome her nevertheless. “oh. hey. of course. come in, stay as long as you need. you didn’t walk, did you?” he asks, a hand on the small of her back being used to direct her inside, bumping his lips to her cheekbone and closing the door behind them both. he’s not as put together as he usually is, disheveled curls and sweats replacing the much more styled appearance he usually displays. it’s obvious he hasn’t really left the couch much today, blankets and cushions in disarray and a tv remote and empty mug abandoned at the scene of the crime. “sorry, the place is a bit of a mess,” he apologizes, which goes for him as well. he hasn’t really been sleeping well lately, so he’s also been up at all hours of the night and his schedule is sort of fucked. “i’ll go find you a phone charger.”

Aaron’s friendship with Jaxon suddenly started replaying in his head. Aaron was bitter about Jaxon leaving Alison, sure, but he would be lying if he said that this wasn’t selfish too. Where had it all went wrong? Part of Aaron even thought that he’d done something to scare him off or something. Part of Aaron wanted to know why. Why did Jax do what he did? And part of Aaron did want Jax to rock his shit just so that the other male could give him another reason to hate him, and so that Aaron knew that this friendship was over for good. Hatred and anger was a lot easier than sadness and pain - two emotions that Aaron tended to avoid at all costs. “Do it then, Jaxon.” He nearly begged him. “But before you do…just tell me why. Why the hell did you think it was okay to leave when you did? To leave the woman you claimed to love with your children. You owe us that much. Man, Des still asks about you.” He tone was much more calm now, but still very firm. Like at any minute he could snap and give him a right hook to the cheekbone. 

jaxon’s fire is quickly extinguished by the mention of the little girl’s name. even though he’d never been one for kids, he’d slowly started to come around to the idea of des being a part of his life. unfortunately, it had been around the same time that alison had told him he was about to be father to two more, and the idea of three children all looking to him for some kind of guidance was too much too soon. he faces most conflict head on but in this instance he’d turned his back and taken the coward’s way out. “she does?” his stance changes, momentarily letting his guard down, backing off. he’ll just as quickly heat back up again but he looks defeated for the time being, like somebody who’s always at war but tired of fighting. “i didn’t claim to love anyone. i did love her and i don’t have to prove that to anyone, least of all you. i thought she was better off without me, i thought all of them were. by the sounds of it i was right, since you all are doing just fine without me.” it fucking kills him, but he also hopes it’s true. he hopes alison is happy and he hopes the babies are happy and he hopes not a day goes by when any of them shed a tear for him. jaxon ruins everything that’s good in his life, and that’s not an attack on alison or anyone else, that’s an attack on himself. he’s the one who ends up damaged most when he sabotages his own happiness, but he’ll be damned if he is going to sit here and try to explain that to someone who has long since stopped caring.

Daisy listened to the boy’s explanation and for some reason, it just wasn’t clicking. In fact, it seemed way too fabricated. “Are you sure you saw a red convertible here? This is East Kingsboro we’re talking about, I haven’t seen that fancy of a car in these fucking parts. I think you might be pulling my leg, dude,” she replied. 

“yeah, pretty sure i’m not stupid or color blind,” jaxon responds. the first one could be debated, but he’s definitely not color blind. “for the record, i’m in east kingsboro and i drive a nice car, so that makes absolutely no sense,” he adds, gesturing to the sleek black sports car over his shoulder, also known as his baby. he would one hundred percent lose his shit if someone so much as scratched his paint, so overall she’s taking the dent very well, he thinks. “but sure, i made the whole thing up.”

the blonde gives a shrug of her shoulders, but she doesn’t deny it. she did like to think everyone is inherently good and just fall off track by their influences. “I don’t find it hard. the bad things people do are miniscule compared to the good they can bring. the little bad things. certain crimes are harder to come back from, though, I believe.” she nods her head along, releasing a chuckle when he mentions cats are assholes. “I can attest to that.. I’m pretty sure my mam’s cat hates me. stares at me like I’ve robbed it of catnip!” she shakes her head. “I feel bad just turning over when one of my dogs is laying down with me. travis will stare at me then knock back out, and hatchi straight up leaves.”

“everyone has good and bad in them, it’s definitely not a black and white thing. as much as people wanna pretend that it is. there’s no heroes and there’s no villains, there’s just people who do terrible shit and people who try to clean up after them. that’s how i see it,” he shrugs. his outlook on the world is a little less sunshine-and-rainbows than a lot of people, but he also thinks it’s a lot more realistic. not everybody has good intentions and the better you know that the less likely you are to get screwed. “ah, you seem very hard to hate. probably just angry it was born as a cat and not a tiger or something,” he rationalizes. “my dog usually just shoves me out of my own bed, but that’s because she’s spoiled. pretty sure she thinks she owns me which is... pretty accurate, actually.”

Dorian listened to Jax tell him that he dealt with nightmares as well and wondered what Jax may have been through to bring those on, but didn’t want to offend Jax by asking. He nodded, clearing his throat. A smile returned to his face as Jaxon fanboyed about being the first to hear the song. It was so cute to Dorian that the other was still such a huge fan of his, even though they’d become friends. “Yeah, man. You’re the first to hear it. You’re not a giant loser at all. It’s cute and flattering that you’re still such a fan.”

“what can i say, i have good taste in music. and people, for the most part,” jax says, shooting him a small smile. obviously there are some exceptions but he usually has learned to trust his intuition when it comes to these things. “i just think it’s cool that you’re able to channel negative feelings into something more positive, instead of bottling it up. it’s very healthy of you. can’t relate,” he jokes. his healthy habits are still a work in progress, but the unhealthy still definitely outweigh the former.

     she was so entranced by her work she didn’t realize that one of her dearest friends had just walked into the coffee shop and was sitting right there next to her. “oh my god, jax ! hi !” ellie said with a big smile. “i didn’t even notice you were there.” she admitted with a chuckle, tucking her hair behind her ears. “oh, fuck off, it’s not that bad.” he was absolutely right tho – she may be a grown woman now, but she was still just as messy as she was when he met her. “at least there’s no film rolls laying around.” she pointed out with a laugh. “but seriously, did you see my case ? if you help me find it i’ll buy you another coffee…”

“that is an improvement,” he commends, dragging his chair over to her table and lifting a couple of things up to peek underneath them in a short-lived search. “i don’t see anything. you can use mine, if you want. not because i need a coffee, just because i love you.” he pulls his case out of his jacket pocket, tipping the headphones out and into his palm before replacing them in his pocket and passing her the case. “what are you working on anyways? not to disturb the creative process or anything but you never call me and you didn’t even make fun of my instagram thirst trap so i just wanna know why you hate me.”

“you would think, but people still confuse me for one of those massage people and on a rare occasion, a stripper because of my good looks.” she admitted, she has never even considered becoming a stripping, knowing that her older sister probably wouldn’t approve. “aside from the obama thing? i have a shit ton honestly.” she admitted. “like one time, this three year old kid wouldn’t stop cursing because it was all his dad did whenever he was over at his place because his parents are divorced and i honestly couldn’t stop laughing, i was laughing so much that i had to leave in the middle of the kid’s checkup to try and contain myself.”

“a stripper? no offense, you’re hot and all but when i think sexy nurse i don’t imagine scrubs. i think those people are just finding an excuse to hit on you and doing a really bad job at it,” he admits, fully judging them. “oh, god. i don’t know whether to laugh or feel bad for the kid,” jax remarks, even if the idea of a three year old spewing curse words with no actual concept of what they mean is kind of adorable. “you think his parents would take that shit to another room or just wait until he’s not around. at least he’ll be a total legend at school when he drops the f-bomb first day of kindergarten.”

“Oh what the hell,” Daisy curses under her breath as she walked out from where she had her van. Wendy, parked. She had only been gone for maybe five minutes tops, getting some snacks for the night. She gone back to see a nice dent in her bumper. Somebody must have backed into her car. Just her luck, right. Turning to someone walking by, she spoke once more. “Hey, did you see anybody back into my car or not?” It was worth a shot to atleast ask. 

jaxon is just leaving the coffee shop with a couple of drinks in hand, the straw from an iced coffee tucked between his lips when he’s stopped by daisy. he is sort of caught off guard by the accusatory nature of her question, given he’s not really involved in the situation at all. his eyes move from her van and back to her, lowering his drink. “um, not?” he replies, scratching his chin with two fingers, tray of coffee balanced precariously in his opposite hand. “when i pulled up, i did see some kid going ‘fuck, oh fuck, my mom’s gonna kill me’ and jumping into a red convertible and speeding off, which at the time just seemed weird as hell but now i’m thinking it’s kind of suspicious. he went that way, if you wanna hightail it after him.”

“Hey, I may not be the best at advice, but I am a bartender. I can’t say I’m not used to being on the other side of venting.” Allister muttered to the person sitting on the other side of the bar top, his blue eyes set, and as understanding on his company as he could manage. He really wasn’t the type to get overly emotional, but he’d come around to being more understanding. It was hard to get away from the whole therapist vibe after being a bartender all these years. “Seriously, what’s botherin’ you? I promise to be as objective as possible.”

jaxon sighs deeply, pouring over his third gin and tonic and already dangerously close to a fourth. “it’s nothing,” he insists, although his tone suggests otherwise. he irritably drums his fingers on the counter for a second or two before deciding he really has to tell somebody. “okay, fine. if you really want to know... it’s my new tattoo. i can’t show you because... well, i’d have to take my pants off and they’ve already kicked me out of here once for doing that, but. it’s supposed to be a scorpion except they fucked the pincers all up,” he explains, and downs the remainder of his drink. “i should have stuck with my guy, but my friend told me she knew some dude who could do it for half the price. that should have been a red flag, but i was high on molly and couldn’t resist a bargain, so now i have a fucking lobster on my thigh. it’s a disaster.”

“i can absolutely  blame him for simping, he’s shot his shot and missed enough times by now that he should know the game is over,” zara explains with a massive roll of her eyes. “he comes into the club and requests my section at least twice a week.” as she’s speaking, shes motioning to the bartender to put in a drink order, she needs one. “do a few shots with me?” although shes asking she’s already ordered them leaving him with no choice. they always have a good time together and no matter how many times they part ways, it seems as though gravity is pulling them back yet again. “what a sweet talker. im alright. working a lot. you?” already her body is subconsciously leaning in closer to him. 

“okay, fair enough,” jaxon accepts. he can recognize the guy is a little bit sad, if not kind of a dick for taking advantage of the fact she can’t really tell him to straight fuck off while she’s on the clock. “does he tip well, at least? or is he creepy and broke?” he questions. somehow, in his mind, it would make it a little more acceptable if he had money; or at least if he was generous with it. the least he could do was compensate her for her time. “is that a good idea?” he asks, but it doesn’t stop him from picking up a shot once they are placed in front of them. something about bad ideas have always appealed to him. sue him, he likes trouble. “i’m okay. you know what they say about all work and no play. it’s very unhealthy.”

Aaron’s perfect image was something that he desperately tried to uphold. He couldn’t let people see all the things that he absolutely fucking hated about himself. That list was long. And Jax knew it. Not all of it, but part of it. There were some things about himself that he thought he would never open up about. Funny, considering that Jax was one of the few people in life that Aaron would have considered opening up about all of…that. Never mind that now. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever be able to trust him like a brother like he once did. Clearly, the other male didn’t seem to give a flying fuck about the fact that two high profile men where yelling at each other on the very busy streets of Manhattan. “You lost your rights to be in this family the day you left anyway.” He spat. He looked at him in absolute disgust, even though he knew he part of him was just projecting his disgust for himself on an easy target. “If I find out that you’re trying to weasel your way back into Alison and the twins’ life…I swear to God. I will run you out of this town faster than you left it.” He threatened. 

jaxon doesn’t doubt that aaron would keep his word, that he doesn’t know plenty of people in plenty of high places that could make his life a living hell if he really wanted to. the thing is, his life already is a living hell. there is nothing that aaron could say to him now that he hasn’t already said to himself. he’s well aware of the foul nature of his actions, he just never expected to hear aaron echoing the voices in the back of his head that constantly make him doubt himself. he trusted in aaron, which is not something he does too often these days. he can’t find it in himself to care about aaron’s threats, provoking him to act on them as he steps right into his face so that they’re practically chest to chest. “let’s get one thing straight,”  he says, voice lowering an octave, eerily calm, which is never a good thing with jax. “you don’t scare me. nothing you could ever do will make me leave if i don’t want to leave but i’d like to see you try, because i will rock your shit so hard you’ll wish you were never born.”

Landon knew the other guy was making sense. The bar was surely full of people looking for a good time without any strings attached and all he had to do was look for them. And yet it wasn’t so simple. He wasn’t the kind of person to just go up to someone and ask them if they wanted to hook up and he felt awkward doing that now. Unless…It was probably a terrible idea, and one that would result in Aaron getting mad at him. Not that Aaron had much room to complain after what he did to him. Landon called out to the bartender for another two shits and handed one to Jax before downing his in one go. “Since apparently you think I’m attractive…I was thinking you could help me out. What do you think?”

it wasn’t jaxon’s intent to get into landon’s pants when he had come up with the idea to get him laid. sure, objectively, he was attractive. up close, maybe more so than when they’d been exchanging dirty looks from across a room or throwing snarky comments at each other’s backs. and maybe the idea of potentially pissing aaron off made him even more tempting, but he never envisioned this coming to fruition. it’s the kind of stupid idea that normally he would think of, which is why it shocks him to hear it come from someone else. “seriously?” the tall brunet leans in, focusing on the other’s face as he tries to assess if he’s joking. if he is, he’s got the best poker face in the world. “i think... fuck it,” he declares, throwing back the gifted shot and letting it blur the lines between friends and enemies even more. “your place or mine?”

“ really? ” byeongsu says, a bit surprised at the male’s statement. “ see, i wouldn’t think that those on tinder would be looking for their soulmate. but, you’ve proven me wrong. ” he nudges his shoulder playfully. “ well, of course there’s nobody like you. that’s why you’re you. totally fucking unique. ” byeongsu responds, shoving his straw back into his mouth and continuing to mindlessly chew on the plastic. “ i would bet money that nuns feel the .. uh, need every once in awhile, too. i mean, they are human, right? they just can’t act on it. ”

“people are looking for their soulmate everywhere. i once touched a girl’s hand reaching for the same orange in whole foods and she told me she felt a connection. like, the only thing we had in common was that we were both buying oranges at five am on a saturday. she probably wasn’t even using hers to make bottomless mimosas,” he explains, and shakes his head lightly. “i dunno, you think nuns get horny?” he asks, now very interested in the topic, his curiosity getting the better of him. a normal person might stop there, but jax is far from normal. “are they just thinking about getting boned constantly because they never get to do anything about it? or would it be something that gets easier to ignore with practice?”

“I figured maybe he was just shy? It can be scary putting yourself out there and we did bond a little through text.” Lying has always been something she despised when others do. She’s not beyond it, but it’s not something she does on the regular either. “He only cared about himself, so I doubt he had that on his mind.” she sighs, then at the question she laughs. “Definitely not. That’s one of my deal breakers. If you can’t be nice, you get the boot. Especially to animals.. some people could be so cruel to them. If any date of mine hurt my dogs in anyway.. oh boy.”

“shy? he sounds like a prick. you’re one of those people who sees the best in everybody, aren’t you? that’s adorable, i don’t know how you do it,” he commends, envious of her optimism. he tries his best to always look on the bright side but he never really can get past his jaded outlook entirely. “why would anyone hurt a dog? dogs are just chillin’, at least cats to some degree i get are assholes. but yeah, people who hurt animals are pretty much the scum of the earth. the betrayal in a dog’s face when you accidentally step on their tail is heartbreaking enough.”

Dorian was really fond of Jaxon. They met at an industry event and hit it off immediately. Ever since then, he’d kind of taken the younger musician under his wing. Because of this, he had no problem bringing Jax into a session and getting his input on a new song he’d been working on. He chuckled softly when Jax pointed out the fact that he was often honest. That was true, sometimes to a fault. He laughed again at the assessment of the song, shrugging his shoulders. “Well, yeah. It’s about actual nightmares I’ve been having for years now. That shit sucks, obviously. But, other than that, I’m fine.”

jax knows what dorian has been through; the whole world does. he has immense respect for him for pulling through it, and he knows how healing music can be when nothing else seems to do the trick. “hey, i’ve been there. there was a point in time where i dreaded falling asleep. sometimes i still do. it really does sound dope, though,” he assures him. this whole experience is pretty cool for him, someone who was first and foremost a fan of his music before he was a friend. he’s met a lot of big faces in his time, but it’s not every day that you connect to what someone is making. “am i the first to hear this? not to sound like a giant loser or anything but this is kind of fucking awesome.”
