there is a tendency with history, i think, because we're so far removed from it, to kind of forget that all of the people were people

a while back I saw a post about Polly Laurens and her gender identity, and it said something along the lines of “John would totally be so supportive of her and buy binders and stuff!! gay older brother looking out for trans sibling!”

and just,

guys. please stop. if you read the letter where they actually talk about Polly, you’d know that John was against the idea and practically shocked that a woman could be equal to a man. he thought it was ridiculous and wanted to “put her back in her place”. he didn’t support her at all.

I know that Laurens is a really popular person here, I like him a lot too, but let’s not remold him like that. he wasn’t an all-good person. yes, he was an abolitionist but he also treated some of the slaves horribly. and judging from that letter mentioned above, he was most likely transphobic and sexist too. 

just because he was gay doesn’t mean he was all-accepting of everyone. in fact, he struggled a lot with his internalized homophobia and nearly committed suicide. please don’t take someone like this and make him into a “gay icon”. please don’t assume he was an angel. and definitely don’t pretend he would have supported polly.

in all honesty, it seems to all tie back to “uwu innocent gay bean” because the core of it is forcing them back into the bounds of heterosexuality-portraying a man and a woman in men’s bodies. it’s making john seem like this perfect, innocent, stereotypical ‘girl’. he was not. and i’m so fucking sick of non-mlms doing this to mlm, it’s a really common trend.

it’s both homophobic in the (false) notion that there is always a man and a woman in a relationship, even a same gender one, and misogynistic in the assumption that a woman is always going to be innocent, supportive, a kind person and just overall perfect.

i don’t have a problem with aus where john supports polly as long as the author acknowledges what it is-an au. not reality. 

john was a period-typical misogynist and he had no education on trans people-he was not an ally to either.

The stays worn in the eighteenth century were a product of heavy labor. A male industry, staymaking was at a very high standard by the middle of the eighteenth century. Stays were made from baleen, which was harvested from the mouth of the Right Atlantic Whale and commonly referred to as whalebone. This material was firm but flexible and could be cut into very thin pieces without any loss of strength. Carefully measured strips of whalebone stitched between a lining and facing fabric created the stays of the eighteenth century. The rounded opening at the top of the stays was made through the innovation of inserting whalebone strips across the bustline as well as vertically. Stays could be fully boned or half-boned, but the latter was more common in the second half of the eighteenth century. (The MET)
