Marik and Bakura's first meeting in Coming Forth By Day by Melodic
Fucking incredible characterization and it made me laugh something stupid, thank you for this
Original text below:
why ryou’s dad isnt dead
english dub: “It’s not easy to lose someone. I know because I lost someone as well on that day.”
japanese: “I killed someone close to you, didn’t I?” (something along those lines. point is, his dad is never stated to have died)
and in the manga (which dsod is a continuation of):
mr. bakura owns the museum, which is why yb gains access to the secret room and uses it to host the shadow rpg.
The whole thing just has me confused to Hell. Did Bakura kill his dad at age four? Is his dad still alive? Which is the true narrative? What of mom and Amane? Did the spirit kill them instead of a car accident?
I dunno about the rest but I dont think we can say he’s not dead just because it was never stated verbally. I mean it wasnt said but it was shown through the flashback and he seemed pretty dead to me? I suppose he could have survived and been left in some kind of disabled state like Yami used to do to those bullies at the beginning. But there was also the parallel made between Agami who lost his father that day (as in Shadi *died*) and Ryo losing his dad so I’m leaning more towards him being dead.
he was still alive and speaking when ryou went to check on his body so it’s safe to assume he was only injured and unless a dead person can run a museum, mr bakura is alive
Well, yes, it’s possible as I said. But does it say he’s actually running the museum or simply owns it like the manga page above says? Because the museum can still be his even if he’s dead, right? But he cant actually be in charge of it if he’s not alive or mentally unstable.
… i don’t believe a dead person can own property. ownership would be passed to someone else. idk what to tell you. if they wanted to capitalize on the angst factor of ryous dad dying than they would have, but as shown there’s literally no indication that he is dead.
I can’t talk about Japanese property law, but to those who claim that the movie indicates that Bakura’s dad is dead… look, okay:
This is what it looks like when the Ring kills someone who doesn’t have the qualifications to wear it.
This is what Bakura’s dad looks like. There’s a slight (”slight”) difference.
Even if you accept that MAYBE the reason he only looks a little beat up as opposed to on fire and bleeding is because it’s a movie and not a manga and they didn’t want to bump up the rating… there’s something else missing. The Ring itself. It goes flying when Bakura’s dad hits the ground. I think there’s an argument to be made that he just wasn’t wearing it long enough to be killed.Bakura’s an unreliable narrator when it comes to his family in general (see: writing letters to Amane as though she were still alive), but I don’t think the English dub writers were thinking that hard about it.So, basically, it comes down to this: there’s literally nothing to indicate that Bakura’s dad is dead in the original version of the movie. As @dmbakura has pointed out, the manga gives every indication that he’s still alive but removed from Ryou’s life.As much fun as the dubbed version of the movie is (I’m a manga purist and I enjoyed the hell out of it), I don’t think it’s reasonable to think that Bakura’s father is canonically dead because of it. If you want him to be dead and for there to be a never-mentioned stepfather or something in the picture, then go for it, I’m not the headcanon police. You’re free to your own interpretations. But there’s a difference between “I think it’d be cool if [whatever] happened” and “[whatever] is explicitly stated to be canon.”
Saw this on my feed all over tik Tok, so I made one with mars mom and thief king Bakura, I'm doing another one with mar and her ex fiancee
Ryou's journey as The Fool
Have I told you how much I loved Taka’s symbolism? Like this one
Interestingly, Ryou is depicted as The Fool here for some reason, him over a more obvious choice like Jonouchi. Although Ryou indeed fits the symbolism of The Fool in his own way. In fact, this peculiar choice of major arcana implies that he had an adventure of his own throughout the series, one that was significant to his character, as protagonists are commonly associated with it.
The Fool represents new beginnings, having faith in the future, being inexperienced, not knowing what to expect, having beginner’s luck, improvisation and believing in the universe.
Beginnings, Spontaneity, Originality, Innocence, Leap of faith
After recovering from the events of Monster World, instead of throwing the Ring away, he desired to learn about the Millennium Items and perhaps also who Bakura was. Ryou saw the existence of the spirit of the Millennium Ring as his quest for knowledge instead of a nightmare that he must endure. He went all out in his little adventure by willingly letting the spirit take over as Bakura’s actions would lead him to new discoveries.
There was no external influence that lead him to this. Despite everyone’s concern, he kept believing in his actions and hoping for the best result. His beliefs were so unique that practically nobody in the series had the same train of thought as him and thus he could be seen as an eccentric.
Naivety, Poor judgement, Folly, Lack of direction, Stupidity, Chaos
Let’s be honest, no matter how much Ryou could have gained out of this quest, it was still extremely reckless to let someone as dangerous as Bakura out while his own consciousness was suppressed. Being the compassionate person he is, he gave Bakura a second chance of sorts, foolishly believing he wouldn’t hurt anyone else as long as he could keep him close. Ryou pretty much let Bakura guide him in a certain direction, showing his naivety as he underestimated his control over the Ring. As such, he let chaos rule over him.
Following the tarot will grant the positives while neglecting it brings the negatives. By following the tarot, Ryou should have grown out of his naive ideas regarding Bakura and the Ring and obtained the determination in what he decided what the best outcome should be for Bakura and himself.
By creating the diorama, instead of letting a greater force guide him, he tried to take fate in his own hands. Taking a part in Bakura’s scheme, as heinous as it was, would give him a better chance at sabotaging his evil plans if needed while still being able to gain insight into the Millennium Items and their purpose.
Despite failing in the end, he didn’t let it bring him down and still believed in a better future together with his friends. Had the story not neglect him, perhaps we would have seen a more meaningful conclusion to his character arc.
