"Good evening, Meitantei."
Shinichi stopped dead in his tracks and suppressed an eye roll in the next moment. He'd just entered his bedroom and could see the silhouette of a certain phantom thief in front of the window.
He let out his pent up sigh when he reached for the light switch and found it non-functional. He hoped the thief had only unscrewed the light bulb.
"What are you doing here?" Shinichi asked not too nicely.
Kid clicked his tongue. "Spicy."
"Well, a thief just broke into my house, forgive me for not offering you tea."
"You make me sound like some sort of criminal," Kid said, waving a hand.
Shinichi suppressed a smile and stayed silent.
After a moment, Kid cleared his throat. "Actually, I came to..." A rustling of clothes as if Kid was fidgeting. "To check up on you. You haven't been to my shows in a while."
Shinichi let out a snort and walked over to his desk, where he let the stack of files he'd been carrying fall with a loud thunk. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Kid flinch, then tilt his head curiously like an anxious housecat.
"Because you're boring." Okay, that was blunter than he'd intended but it's better to rip off the bandaid quickly. He heard Kid gasp in surprise.
"Boring? Excuse me? Every show I think of more elaborate and fantastical tricks! Just ask your friend Sonoko-san!"
Leaned against the desk, Shinichi faced Kid and crossed his arms. "And still they look bland."
"It's your suit. I can't look at it!" Shinichi started gesticulating wildly. "It's always the same! I'm sure it's not literally the same suit, but it always looks the exact same. And it's so boring! It looks like nothing. It looks like baby's first suit. It doesn't even fit you properly, do you not notice that!? It looks like from some failed magician from the 90s desperately clinging to fame!"
Kid make some helpless sound, something between a squeak and a choke, but Shinichi continued.
"Your tricks are good, sure, but I can't stand looking at your suit! So I can't even look at your tricks! Your always-the-same white suit and tophat ensemble bores me to tears and makes want to hurl! Have you ever seen a magic show? Even the classic magicians in classic suits have variety. Their suits are interesting. Have you ever heard of a suit vest? Why not try that for a change! Or try changing the suit up according to your tricks. Your trick involves fire? Why not a red suit, or at least something with flames.
"I stopped comibg to your heists because you're just not interesting anymore, Kid."
Shinichi breathed heavily. Okay, wow, okay, where had that come from? He didn't mean to be so cruel. He meant every word, but Ran always told him to be nicer about how he phrased things. Too bad Ran wasn't here.
There was an awkwardly long silence, then Shinichi heard sniffles.
"Allergies!" Kid yelled before leaping out the window. Shinichi ran after him but all he saw was the hang glider flying off.
He sighed and leaned his elbow on the window sill, chin on his hand.
"Guess I have to go to the next heist and apologize."
