HE KNOWS
Patron Saints of One-Way Trips
I need to talk about something that the film Project Hail Mary does really well: Grace is so alone on Earth. The only people we see him having fun with are the kids who are no longer present past the first scene with them, and Carl, who once Grace becomes actively involved in the project, stops being shown. Stratt pushes him away gently, never really letting him in. He is always alone in a lab, alone at the bar.
the bar scene was insane to me in terms of framing. We see Grace, alone in the corner, looking at all the other people having fun together. He locks eyes with some of the astronauts, and all three of them look awkward. Stratt looks at him, but never moves towards him, never makes contact. He is always alone. He is lonely.
Rocky makes his world light up. He has energy, he uses his teacher voice, he bounces a ball off of the xenonite walls while chatting with Rocky. He climbs a tree, he surfs, he makes puppet shows “reluctantly”. Rocky means that Grace is loved. Grace feels loved. People have already pointed out that Rocky and Stratt both play the Trolley Problem with Grace, Stratt choosing the rational option, and Rocky choosing the emotional one. Here’s my imput:
Grace plays the Trolley Problem with himself. On earth he hasn’t got it in him to sacrifice himself for the entire planet, he has nothing to die for, no motivation. He chooses to sacrifice the earth, even if that choice was overturned.
Grace chooses to sacrifice himself for Rocky. He pulls the lever and puts his life on the line, for the one person he knows will do the same, the person who has already done the same. Rocky is the person he will die for, because with Rocky, he actually lived.
Rocky means Grace is not alone. Rocky means Grace isn’t lonely
fullbody of human rocky based off James Ortiz!
APPARENLT JAMES DOES DRAG!!!!
the most important thing to understand about grace is that the only thing hes really afraid of is starting. once he's in the middle of something he's all momentum. he doesn't stop his spacewalk once he's out there, because he needs to get it done. he doesn't stop researching astrophage, he actively asks to continue researching because he just doesnt do things by half measures. time go fishing, he doesn't abort the mission because he dropped the collector, he risks his life to grab it. sure he mopes around a bit after waking up, but he pulls himself together and gets it done.
while yes, he is a coward, most of that comes from his crippling self esteem issues. he doesn't believe he can do something when he's faced with a task, but once he's started, he sees it through. that's what stratt needed, and that's what stratt saw in him. and he delivered that perfectly.
He's just like me fr
all all all
Watching The Gray Man and why did they do Wagner like that 💀💀
I have grown so fond of Ryan Gosling, not even in an attracted kind of way, he just has the eyes of a confused deer that somehow found itself standing in my kitchen and I chose to keep it as emotional support
rocky switching between the dry sarcastic tone "i make chain. i make long chain." / you can do that? / *yes.* (like duh. in the book he says "obvious i can do that.")
AND
the slightly childlike "what's that?" tone when grace calls it fishing
AND
full on excited screaming when grace shows him what fishing is. "OOOHHHHH OHHHH!!!"
in the span of literally six seconds is what makes him the character of all time. he is a middle aged nerd mechanic pairbonded with a middle aged nerd scientist and they are scream besties and clock bros together
fuck i love this movie so much
Ryland Grace wasn't even hiding, that's what breaks my heart. He wasn't curled up in some bunker ignoring the issue and waiting for it to blow over. He was roped into the PHM and he stepped up - he upended his life basically overnight and moved to the facilities to help. He became essentially the second in command after Stratt, THE expert on Astrophage, training the candidates for the mission. He was going down with the sinking ship of Earth descending into hell
His fatal flaw is that he panicked. Like a human being would, especially one not trained to deal with extreme pressure in extreme conditions, like astronauts in space (which is why he thought he wasn't a good fit for the mission). "well, we're all gonna die (one day in some distant future)" is veery different from "OMFG you're dying Right Now, the clock is very much ticking" The walls closed in and he panicked about it.
Just consider: you have mere hours to say goodbye to your life and to Earth. In a few days you'd be sent into space (for the first time in your life), put in a coma, so you'd wake up years later, spend months working out a solution (which may or may not even work) and then you'd just... die. Your past, present, and future. Process all that in HOURS. Like you know that moment in the movie where he scrolls and scrolls and scrolls from Tau Ceti to Earth and just gets sad? Yeah, could you schedule your existential crisis over the shear scale of the universe into the allocated time? Please and thank you
To add insult to injury, they give him time to make his decision only to reveal that the decision is already made. If the backup plan already involves lying to the public that I went willingly, then just do that. Don't give me hope that there is an option of not going
This might be an unpopular opinion but I think if the launch wasn't so soon and they had more time, they could've fully persuaded Grace to go. Give him some mental health time to panic, maybe do some specific crash courses on astronaut things and he would go along with it (I'm not saying he would've been thrilled but if he knew from the get-go that it was non-negotiable, he would've adjusted). Just look what he did on Hail Mary in the movie - he moped around drinking vodka for a while and then he got his ass up to work

Big fan of Laika getting 2 dads in barely a few months. Also big fan of those two dad's being the complete opposite but still both caring for her no matter what. I LOVE THE PATRON SAINTS OF ONE WAY TRIPS
was this a mandate did i miss a memo
There's only one possible reason
"what a relief, to care for someone again" what if i lit this house on fire
i dont think ive ever gotten into a movie as much as im into iron lung.
i probably wouldnt say iron lung is my absolute favorite movie of all time, and ive just LOVED some movies, but never in my life have i been hyperfixated on a movie for a month and a half straight. im just not the type of person who watches a lot of movies, and when i do, i might go look up fanart or edits afterwards but thats it. i almost never watch movies; i binge tv shows or certain youtube content because they have more content, since my adhd brain struggles to keep focused on something that i cant constantly consume canon content from
but somehow, i have watched iron lung three times in the span of a few weeks, and now im waiting for the digital release so i can watch it several more times.
HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THIS IRON LUNG BTS PHOTO YALL
