HIS PHONE CHIMES a minute later , eyes squinting at his too bright screen . there’s a chuckle on his lips as he reads jessica’s reply , already up for this little hunt .
[ dominic → jessica ] : oh , you’re on bbg
dominic sets out after excusing himself from his companions , heading towards the bonfire — not really liking the growing crowd in the middle but for jessica.. well . he easily spots the female situated among friends . there’s a smirk on his lips when he approaches from behind . dominic reaches out two hands , covering the female’s eyes . ‘ guess who ? ’
“hm.. who could it be?” she mused softly as her hands came up to hold onto the other’s wrists. she was making no effort of pulling them away, because she knew for sure who it was. his voice and the texts prior obviously gave it away, but she’s still surprised at how fast he actually found her. “david? daniel? do... novan?” jessica teased, her grip finally falling. “i’m thinking more of my knight in shining armor.. i’m sick of all this conversation going on.” it was mostly people talking about how glad they were to have graduated and she sure as hell wanted to be that person. one more year to go and she’d be free. “please can we just walk around for ten?”

HE WAS RUNNING on a few hours of sleep and caffeine — so much so that he could literally feel his bones sag from exhaustion . but he still has training to tend to , requests from SC he has to oversee — and god , he just has too much on his plate . even he has to acknowledge that . dominic finds himself out by the university park , trying to get some fresh air before his next class . and during times like these , he pulls out his phone — lips pursed as he tries to decide who he needs right now . a bit later and he’s typing out a message .
[ dominic → jessica ] : hey bbg [ dominic → jessica ] : u busy ?
the text message from dominic had been completely unexpected – she figured he’d have something better to do than be hitting her up when he had graduated and was probably surrounded by better people than her. but she certainly wasn’t complaining. how could she complain when it was dominic hitting her up? he was always incredibly nice to her… and when she said incredibly… she meant it. his company was always appreciated, and she always made sure to repay that act whenever she could.
[ outgoing → dominic ]:: if you call trying to keep warm and drinking my weight in beer busy,, then yes,, i’m very busy. [ outgoing → dominic ]:: but nah, not rlly. i’m sat near the actual bonfire,, bonus points if you find me in five minutes !!!

almost to a fault, jane cared way too much about what people thought of her and any of her music. there were many opinions that she valued, jessica’s being one that felt most important. “i want your honesty,” she added with a shy smile, scooting a little closer so that the earphone cord reached the other. jane played with the pen in her hands while she waited for jess to finish listening. her gaze scanned over her features when jessica’s eyes were closed, wondering what she was thinking about when she heard the music. a slight blush appeared on jane’s cheeks as the music finished and jess praised her. “you like it?” a genuine smile took shape on her lips. “it still needs a lot of work but.. i wanted to create something, you know, like, calming,” her brows scrunched as she struggled to explain. for someone who majored in creative writing, it had always been difficult for jane to coherently explain her thoughts. “do you know the feeling of a clear night at the beach? when the moon is out and the waves kiss the shore goodnight.. when the sand’s still warm from the day’s heat and you feel at peace?” jane met jessica’s eyes as she recalled their shared memories together of meeting each other at the beach at night. “i wanted to capture that feeling.. that feeling of a warm summer night. i don’t know if it’s there yet but you know what i mean?” if it wasn’t obvious already, jane adored the summer. she adored the girl in front of her too, but that’s something only her journals know about.
jane’s words brought a smile on her face, dipping her eyes to look at her hands with a slight blush on her cheeks. she knew exactly the feeling that the other was talking about --- because she had absolutely felt that whenever the two had met up and spent time at the beach. it was some of her favourite moments that the two spent together because it was just the pair of them, no care in the world, enjoying each other’s company. “yeah.. i know what it feels like... i remember it pretty well -- if you thought i forgot or anything, i definitely didn’t.” she might not have even been talking about the pair, she could have been talking about someone who certainly wasn’t her, but she was putting that out there. she had to otherwise she knew she was going to regret it. she missed their times together so much, especially with summer right around the corner again. jessica immediately held the earbud out for the other to take back, her smile still occupying her face. she missed her.. she missed her so, so much. “that comes across... especially to me. i dunno about everyone else, you might need a second opinion there.” the theology major teased, holding out the earbud for the other to take back. “but i loved it, honestly. i don’t think you have much else to do with it.”

there was something so addictive for moonie to feel like he had someone under his thumb. it was an unhealthy way to view anything, but he acted on his feelings just as he was taught growing up. being selfish was never frowned upon, and it was hard to say that moonie WASN’T selfish when it came to jess at the moment. seeing her struggle to get herself together before shifting away was the kind of boost that drew HIM in, and left him wanting more. “how can you make it up to me?” repeating the question, he gently reached over for his glass, placing a straw between his lips as he seemed to scan his head for an idea. “… spend the rest of the night with me,” he decided, “here, or at my apartment. or both, doesn’t matter.” of course, that was step one, and it was easy to tell the implications left in the air after he spoke. “not that you’re required, but i don’t really think you want to leave me either, do you?”
even she knew that moonie had a very clear idea of just how much of jess he had wrapped around his finger, and she couldn’t even resist it. maybe it was because she didn’t necessarily get a goodbye to their relationship. there was no farewell.. she was just dumped and had to pick up the pieces on her own. so the simple request from him had her narrowing her eyes, reaching forward for the glass that he was taking a sip from. that jerk knows i won’t say no. “fine.. i’ll spend the night with you here.” jessica was quick to emphasize, still holding his glass away from him with a smile. “but get me a drink first and i’ll think about that second location.” did she already know she was going to go home with him?? more than likely. when she asked what she could do to make it up to him, this wasn’t what she was expecting. “tick tock, moonie bae.. you’re missing out on jessica time if you don’t get me that drink -- humor me. i know you still know my favorite drink.”

the blonde could help the short chuckle that fell off her lips at the other words, “ sorry - sorry i don’t mean to laugh … “ she quickly waves her hand in front of her, she didn’t mean to offend the other even if she was the one who made the joke. jo had never been a real believer in all of that. her parents had dragged her to church when she was younger and eventually their appearance their got less and less as the restaurant got more and more popular. “ not well , not well at all , “ she laughs at the situation she’s stuck herself in. if she couldn’t joke about it then she’d it might all be too real, “ my parent’s think i’m going for engineering, actually a graphic arts major , “ she explained before shrugging her shoulders. her eyes drop to the sidewalk before landing back on jessica’s face, “ honestly ? it’s nice really , have you thought about changing it or talking to your parents ? “ she can’t help the curiosity that bubbles in her. it surprised jo just how easy, the conversation was going between them. she would have expected more awkwardness, but the two girls seemed to easily fall into past patterns, “ i know, it’s just not easy all the time, especially considering … everything , “ she frowns for a moment before shaking it off, “ it was nice seeing you too jess . “
“it’s fine. i would have felt more awkward if you didn’t actually laugh to be honest.” she gives the other a small shrug, a smile still planted on her face. “it’s not like i believe in all of the stuff in here. surely i should have already been struck by lightning or something if everything in this thing was real.” they met through church after all -- she could only assume that she believed absolutely nothing of what they had been taught.. and it wasn’t like most of it was retained anyway considering how jess got into a bad habit of sneaking away with people during sunday school; jo being the first to peak her interest. “ah, right. you think they’ll react badly if they find out?” she couldn’t really even think about talking to her parents about switching majors, she knew it was going to be pointless.. she was following the family trend after all. “d’you want me to be honest? i’m surprised i wasn’t sent off to become a nun or something after my mom caught us all those years ago.. she’s still as uptight as ever --- i mean, i love her.. she’s my mom, y’know? but i really don’t believe in any of this. it’s pointless. and it gives me a headache.” there’s a split silence between them before she exhales, looking between jo and her books. “--i was going to grab lunch before heading back to my dorm.. you wanna come?? for the food, i mean.”

“oh?” he blinked in surprise, before letting out a somewhat nervous laugh. “well, i have a roommate. i don’t think he’d appreciate that… or maybe he would.” tilting his head a bit, the ends of his ears seemed to become a dark shade of red before he finally moved on. “that? it’s nothing. just got some inspiration.” that inspiration being what an emotional mess his head felt. “you can read it, if you want.” he was happy to have the distraction, anyway; jess was a positive in his life, and he was happy to give her his full focus over whatever he couldn’t stop thinking about. “nothing?” he leaned over, gently placing the books on a table before starting to look through them. “i’ve been thinking about a, uh… trip, or something, but with the police and everything getting more fuckin’… intense, or whatever, i don’t think any of us can go very far without looking suspicious. still, just even… driving around, being together. that could be fun, right?” glancing over, his gaze was hopeful; he needed his old friends right now, the people he trusted above anyone else in the group. “plus, maybe things aren’t the greatest right now, but being around you always cheers me up.”
“he probably would, let’s be real.” she grinned, unable to help but poke fun at the boy. she got the appeal of zen, but he’d never be her type just because the pair grew up together. he was a real sweetie pie though and that in itself was beyond admirable. “well, are you finished it? i don’t want to read it if you’re not done.. i’d rather wait for the end product, y’know?” zen’s writing had always been something she loved reading, ever since they were children and would exchange stories or books. with him growing up, and studying, his stories had become just that much better. so because of all that, she was more than content to wait and read whatever was bothering him after. she did love that he was giving her the option to read now if she wanted to though. “a trip would be real nice.. i’m kinda sick of looking at campus and this damn town all together, really. but i mean, little day trips away wouldn’t hurt, right? drive out to a water park or theme park?” now that he had put the thought in her head, she knew it wasn’t something she’d be able to forget easily, and it was definitely going to be something she’d be bugging him about now. “being around you always cheers me up too.” she smiled, "you’ve not changed a bit, zen.. still the sweetest kid around.” she knew how lucky she was to have a friend like zen, especially considering how long they had known each other now. he had stuck by her side, and she was sure as hell sticking by his. “which is why you’re a genius about taking another trip.”
* / moonie bae
“you don’t? are you mad at me?” he frowned dramatically, as if her being upset was completely out of the realm of possibilities, and not a very reasonable feeling to have towards him. “if you need a break, i understand. i’ll happily lead the way back over to that guy and you can forget all about me…” he raised a brow, still looking amused by the smile that remained despite her clearly wanted to show just how ANGRY she was with him. it was cute, in a way — at least to someone as weird as moonie. “ah…” while her words were meant to be taken harshly, moonie couldn’t help but laugh. “you know what, that was perfectly valid. maybe he hasn’t done that. definitely looks like a… stick around and stalk you for the rest of your life, threatening to murder every guy that you come in contact with. is that what you prefer? in that case, i definitely handled our relationship the wrong way.” after a beat, he dropped his act, pulling her closer. “i’m here now, and i’m helping you… and i can’t help but notice you still chose me over him, so i’m clearly not the absolute worst guy you’ve been around. even if i’m only a little higher, i’m happy as long as i’m not at the bottom.” with that, he placed a finger underneath her chin, his eyes scanning over her face before humming softly. even with that, the kiss felt sudden. not that he didn’t want it, and he was clearly pleased when instinctively moonie was smirking against her lips. once his pride settled, he finally returned the kiss. he hadn’t anticipated was how his own body seemed to relax into the familiarity of her lips, hand pressed into the dip of her back and his hand relaxing to hold her jaw, his thumb gently caressing her cheek in an attempt to keep her feeling comforted. and, hey, maybe he had intentions in planting the idea to begin with, but he had no plans in pointing that out to her. instead, he enjoyed the kiss for what it was worth, knowing that another was rather unlikely. moonie was the first to pull back, discreetly moving his gaze over to notice the guy pissed off, but leaving. so, with a low, satisfied hum, moonie’s position never wavered. their lips remained a few inches apart as he looked back down. “he’s gone, but i’m happy to do that again. you know, for good measure.”
she hated how much she loved the kiss -- how much she just loved being in his arms.. which was slightly upsetting. he was the one who left her, and she swore she’d never give him another chance, but when he was kissing her? when he was making her feel like the only girl in the world? that was quickly changing. suddenly all she could think about was moonie, moonie, moonie. but if he asked, she was absolutely going to blame that on the fact that she was acting - she was pretending to be interested in him so that guy hitting on her would leave her the hell alone. he was right about one thing though -- jess did choose him over that creep.. and over everyone else around them. her eyes remained closed even at his words, fingers gently playing with his hair as she tried to rid herself of the want for more. she couldn’t do this.. she just couldn’t, she owed that much to herself. “i’m sure you would be happy to do it again.” though as soon as she opened her eyes and got a good look at him, she was quick to pull her arms away from him, gently wiggling out of his grasp with an exhale. “but i appreciate that, moonie.. honestly. uh, how can i make it up to you?” he pretty much saved her from the most uncomfortable situation of her life, so she was willing to do pretty much anything for the boy -- she still trusted him dearly after all.

" i said what i said … “ she mused a smug smirk before rolling her eyes. so, maybe she had seen her around a few times, she wasn’t exactly keeping tabs on her though. her eyebrows scrunched together at her words before a look of understanding fell over her face, “ english lit ? that’s interesting and sounds a little more interesting , “ she bit her bottom lip for a moment, she didn’t mean to sound condescending in her words, maybe she had her own prejudice not only from their encounter but her time at the church, “ hey , you could be lying to your parents and telling them you’re going for one thing and totally not . “ her shoulders shrug casually, her current situation with her parents wasn’t something she was entirely proud of. “ i guess it’s good i’m at least doing what i want now . “ the blonde can’t help but squirm a bit uncomfortably as the spiel came from jessica, she had gotten use to it by now people offering their condolences for her best friend. “ uh , yeah , thanks , ” she drops her eyes to the ground. she’ll always miss manon but, after everything that happened she can’t help the guilt the spreads through her. “ it’s fine really , no worries , it’s hard to see a reminder of her everywhere i go on campus …. “
“i’d much rather be studying novels from the past, than the ultimate book of the past.” her fingers flew up to do air quotations once she gave a big pat to the bible in her arms. not that she didn’t believe in everything she was taught as a kid, she still believed in some of it, but a lot of it was pretty ridiculous in her eyes too. as she got older? she just knew it wasn’t for her like it was for her family. “i’m assuming that’s what you’re doing then? how’s that working out?” as much as she had changed, she just couldn’t blatantly lie to her parents about this sort of thing. it just got to the point where she didn’t even want to question their authority or thoughts on it all. if she was told to study theology? she was definitely gonna make sure she studied it. “i bet you’re a lot happier doing what you want though.. i wish i could feel that.” despite the awkwardness from them bumping into each other and seeing how uncomfortable jo was about her bringing up manon, it was still beyond nice to see her.. well, talk to her really. “i can only imagine.. but yeah, forget i asked. and know that you do have me to talk to if you need it.” she could only assume that she was fine though -- that she was letting it out to her friends somehow. “it was really nice seeing you though.”
Gosh, I look good in everything.
